His consciousness seemed to rise slowly from the depths of a dark, icy sea.
Hearing returned first. The steady, rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor, the familiar smell in the air, a mixture of disinfectant and some soothing medicinal herb, and the faint, peaceful bustle of Konoha outside the window-birdsong, children's laughter, and shouts from a distant training ground.
Then came touch. Beneath him was the soft fabric of a hospital bed. A dull ache came from his left ribs and right arm, properly bandaged, but deeper inside lay the emptiness and burning pain of chakra pathways pushed far beyond their limits. His eyes in particular felt as though they had been seared with a branding iron and then submerged in ice water, sending out waves of sharp stabbing pain and aching pressure. Every bone in his body felt as though it had come apart. Even moving a finger was extraordinarily difficult.
Finally, Ling slowly opened his eyes.
His vision was somewhat blurred and only cleared after a few seconds of adjustment. The familiar white ceiling of Konoha Hospital came into view. He was lying in the highest-security Isolation Ward, connected to several machines monitoring his vital signs. Thick bandages wrapped his left arm and left ribs, and his right arm was immobilized as well, though it did not seem broken. Its muscles and chakra pathways were simply severely strained.
He wanted to sit up, but a wave of dizziness and weakness made him abandon the attempt.
"You're awake?" A calm voice came from beside the bed.
Ling turned his head slightly and saw Fox sitting in a chair beside his bed, still wearing her fox mask, though she had exchanged her Anbu uniform for casual clothes. She seemed to have been keeping watch for quite some time. She held a scroll, but her gaze rested on him.
"Captain..." Ling's voice was terribly hoarse, his throat feeling as though it had been scraped with sandpaper.
"Don't talk. You're badly hurt." Fox set down the scroll, stood up, and poured a glass of warm water, bringing a straw to Ling's lips.
Ling took small sips. The cool water moistened his parched throat, bringing a little comfort.
"How is... Miss Xi?" he asked with difficulty.
"She only exhausted her chakra and mental energy, with some minor erosion. A few days of quiet rest will set her right. You, on the other hand..." Through the mask, Fox's voice seemed to carry a trace of complicated emotion. "Multiple lacerations all over your body, a wound in your left ribs deep enough to reach your internal organs, severe damage to your Chakra Network, and, most troublesome of all, your eyes... Lady Tsunade personally treated you for an entire night before your condition stabilized."
Ling's heart tightened. Lady Tsunade's personal intervention meant his injuries truly had reached an extremely dangerous point. He remembered the complete awakening of the Eye of Purification and Erosion before he lost consciousness, and the explosion that had swallowed everything at the end.
"The mission... did we succeed?"
"Yes." Fox nodded. "The core was destroyed, and the gray mist dispersed completely. We rescued four border ninja who still showed signs of life, but they're all in deep comas, their minds severely contaminated. Experts from the Yamanaka Clan are attempting treatment. The others..." She did not continue, but her meaning was clear.
Ling fell silent for a moment. Of a ten-person border squad, only four had been rescued, and their condition remained uncertain. This price...
"You did more than enough." Fox seemed to see through his thoughts. "If you hadn't risked your life to charge into the core and find its weakness, we might not have saved anyone. We might even have lost our entire squad. That thing... was very dangerous. Based on the subsequent site investigation and the information you provided before losing consciousness, we can essentially confirm that it was an artificially created 'pollution source,' combining some ancient, evil soul fragment with a vast quantity of life energy. Its methods were connected to the remnants of Root and that Gray-Clad Man Organization from before, but more mature and... vicious."
An artificially created pollution source... Ling recalled the "core" he had seen through the Eye of Purification and Erosion, and the familiar, ancient presence it contained.
"Its target... seemed to be me?" Ling recalled the intent and tentacles that had come straight for him. "'Key Holder'... that's what it called me."
"It's very likely connected to the fragment inside you." Fox's tone grew serious. "After analyzing it, Lady Tsunade and Lord Jiraiya believe the fragment in your possession may be a 'fragment' or 'beacon' of some higher-order power. That pollution source, meanwhile, may have been a failed creation or experimental subject produced by an organization attempting to control or imitate a similar power. They resonate with and attract one another. Because you possess the fragment, you've become their primary target."
This conjecture made Ling's heart sink. It meant that as long as he carried this fragment, similar dangers might keep coming to his door.
"The fragment... can it be removed?" Ling asked, though he knew the chances were slim.
"Lady Tsunade tried." Fox shook her head. "That fragment seems to have formed a deep energy connection with your body, particularly your eyes. Forcibly separating it would be extremely risky. It could blind you or even threaten your life. For now, it seems you can only learn to control it, rather than get rid of it."
Control it... easier said than done. This time, merely the collision and devouring between the fragment's energy and the pollution source had nearly cost him his life.
"My eyes... how are they?" Ling asked the question that concerned him most.
"The situation is very unusual." Fox chose her words carefully. "According to Lady Tsunade's examination, your eyes seem to have undergone some kind of... evolution at the last moment? Or rather, a deeper fusion. For now, Lady Tsunade has temporarily sealed most of that new form's ocular power with a powerful Sealing Jutsu Formula, to keep it from continuing to consume your life force and mental energy before your body recovers. Even so, your basic vision and perceptiveness seem stronger than before. Lady Tsunade will explain the details herself once you're feeling better."
Evolution... a seal... Ling could feel that newborn power deep within his eyes, vaster and harder to control, restrained beneath a warm, sturdy Yang Release seal like a sleeping volcano. It reassured him a little. At least he did not have to worry about the power going out of control in the immediate future.
"You need rest." Fox stood up. "I'll handle the mission report and follow-up analysis. Your first priority is recovery. Remember, until Lady Tsunade gives you permission, you absolutely must not attempt to use your ocular power or mold excessive amounts of chakra."
"I understand, Captain. Thank you."
Fox nodded, said nothing more, and turned to leave the ward.
Over the following days, Ling began a long and painful recovery.
Every day, Tsunade came personally to examine him, paying particular attention to his eyes. Her Yang Release Chakra worked like the most meticulous artisan, carefully repairing his damaged chakra pathways and reinforcing the seal, while she continued to observe and record the changes in the fusion between his eyes and the fragment's energy.
"Incredible..." After one examination, Tsunade looked at the complex spectral chart on the instrument and could not help murmuring, "The fusion of the two energies is accelerating, and they seem to have formed some unique, stable new structure... These eyes are evolving in an unknown direction. Kid, how do you feel now? Anything unusual about your vision?"
With his eyes closed, Ling carefully assessed what he felt. "My vision is very clear, even clearer than before I was injured. I can see finer details. Colors... seem more vivid too. But whenever I try to concentrate and 'see' deeper, I feel resistance from the seal and stabbing pain in my eyes."
"That's the seal protecting you." Tsunade withdrew her chakra and said gravely, "Right now, you're like a child holding a bundle of explosives. The power of these eyes far exceeds what your current body and mind can bear. The seal will gradually release as your strength increases. It's a mandatory protective mechanism, as well as a process of training your control. Until you've mastered it completely, don't try to force your way through it, or the consequences will be unimaginable."
"Yes, Lord Hokage," Ling replied respectfully.
Alongside his physical treatment, intelligence was being compiled and analyzed. Inoichi Yamanaka personally led the Intelligence Division in deep mental probes of the four rescued border ninja, attempting to uncover what they had seen and felt while under control, as well as further information about the pollution source. Jiraiya also used his extensive intelligence network to investigate the organization behind that gray-clad man, which supposedly sought to "revive ancient powers."
Three days later, when Ling could already get out of bed and walk slowly, a preliminary Joint Analysis Report landed on Tsunade's desk. As a key participant and intelligence provider, Ling was also permitted to attend this small, high-level briefing.
The atmosphere in the confidential meeting room beside the Hokage's office was grave. Tsunade sat at the head, with Jiraiya, Kakashi, Fox, and Intelligence Division head Inoichi Yamanaka present. Ling sat at the far end, his face still somewhat pale, though he was much more alert.
"Based on the analysis of the survivors' mental fragments and the residual energy at the scene," Inoichi Yamanaka said in a steady, clear voice, "we can essentially confirm that the B-7 Outpost incident was a premeditated, targeted attack and an act of 'seeding.'"
"Seeding?" Kakashi asked.
"Yes." Inoichi nodded. "The attackers' primary objective wasn't simply to eliminate the border outpost, but to use the outpost ninja's life force and chakra, combined with some kind of 'seed' they brought-the pollution source's core-to create a powerful 'contaminated zone' on the Land of Fire's border, capable of spreading and eroding. Their purpose may have been to test the pollution source's effectiveness, cause panic along the border, or... pursue some deeper scheme, such as attracting a specific target-someone who possesses a 'key' with similar energy."
His gaze swept over Ling, whether deliberately or not.
"What about the attackers' identities?" Tsunade asked gravely.
"Very unclear." Inoichi shook his head. "In the survivors' memory fragments, we saw only figures wearing black cloaks and strange masks. The ninjutsu they used was quite varied, but all displayed strong Yin Release and soul-interference characteristics. However, in an extremely well-hidden corner of the site, we found a partially destroyed fragment of a Communication Talisman. The residual chakra imprint on it... was seventy percent similar to what we detected on the gray-clad man captured in Tanzaku Town."
"That organization again!" Tsunade slammed a fist onto the table. "They just won't go away!"
"Their technology seems to be advancing rapidly." Jiraiya rubbed his chin, his expression grave. "From trading forbidden jutsu in Tanzaku Town to methods capable of directly creating contaminated zones at the border... the knowledge and power they possess may be even older and more dangerous than we imagined. And they're clearly very interested in Ling, or rather, the 'key' he carries."
"Any new discoveries about the nature of the 'key' and the pollution source?" Tsunade looked at Jiraiya.
"A few conjectures." Jiraiya straightened. "I consulted some extremely ancient fragments of documents dating to before Ninshu's origins. Before the Sage of Six Paths founded Ninshu and systematized chakra cultivation, there seem to have been more primitive, and more dangerous, ways of using power in this world. Some involved the crude plundering and distortion of natural energy, including Ryūmyaku, while others involved forbidden manipulation of souls and the essence of life. I suspect that both the fragment in Ling's possession and the pollution source that organization created may be connected to these lost systems of power."
He looked at Ling. "The mutation in your eyes may be an unknown change resulting from the collision and fusion of a relatively 'modern' Kekkei Genkai like the Uchiha Sharingan with a fragment of that ancient power. It's an opportunity, but it also carries enormous risks. Such ancient powers often come with a heavy 'price' and strong 'contaminating properties.'"
Silence filled the meeting room. Lost systems of power... it sounded like myth and legend, yet their recent experiences made it impossible not to believe.
"In other words, we may not be facing a simple terrorist organization," Kakashi summarized, "but a group of madmen who possess dangerous ancient knowledge?"
"You could put it that way." Jiraiya nodded. "And they seem to have some kind of... potential rivalry or connection with Akatsuki. The Ryūmyaku in the Land of Rain and the pollution source at the border both involve manipulating enormous amounts of natural energy or life force. It's hard not to think of Akatsuki's purpose in collecting the Tailed Beasts."
Tsunade's brows knitted tightly. Things were growing more and more complicated. Remnants remained unpurged within, Akatsuki waited hungrily outside, and now a clandestine organization possessing dangerous ancient knowledge had emerged. And all their objectives seemed vaguely to point toward Ling.
"Strengthen border defenses and expand reconnaissance, particularly for unidentified energy readings and unusual movements of personnel," Tsunade ordered. "Inoichi, keep digging into the survivors' memories and the clues at the scene. Make sure you find more traces of that organization. Jiraiya, have your intelligence network keep tracking them. Kakashi, Fox, your squads will operate around Konoha for the time being. Strengthen protection and surveillance of Crow, while continuing to investigate possible connections between Root's remnants and this organization."
"Yes!" everyone answered.
"Ling." Tsunade looked at him. "Your task is to recover as quickly as possible and adapt to the new changes in your eyes. Until you have my permission, you are not to leave Konoha. Understood?"
"Understood, Lord Hokage."
After the meeting, Ling returned to the hospital accompanied by Fox. He remained silent the whole way, everything he had just heard echoing through his mind.
Lost ancient powers... the fragment's key... a conspiracy targeting me... and a possible connection with Akatsuki...
He felt himself being pushed, step by step, toward the center of an even greater, more dangerous vortex. His constantly evolving Eye of Purification and Erosion and that mysterious fragment were both his hope of breaking the deadlock and, perhaps, the seeds of his destruction.
I have to grow stronger, faster! Strong enough to control this power, strong enough to see the truth beyond the fog, strong enough to protect myself and everything I cherish!
After returning to the ward, Ling did not rest. Instead, he sat cross-legged on the bed and began slowly molding and circulating chakra according to the gentler, more effective method Tsunade had taught him. At the same time, he carefully sensed the power beneath the seals on his eyes, trying to understand it rather than resist or fear it.
He knew he might not have much time left to grow in peace.
While Ling immersed himself in recovery and training, far away in the Land of Rain, deep within Akatsuki's base.
The Demonic Statue of the Outer Path stood in the dim space, its fingers already lit with glows representing the chakra of several Tailed Beasts. Deva Path Pain stood before the statue, his Rinnegan regarding everything indifferently.
Zetsu emerged from the ground like a plant. His white half spoke flippantly. "Well, well, things seem lively over in Konoha. An interesting 'toy' appeared at the border and gave that little Uchiha bug quite a rough time."
His black half continued in a low voice, "That power... a loathsome familiarity. Different from Ryūmyaku, more... filthy. But also more 'erosive.'"
Konan's figure appeared silently, her cool voice ringing out. "Should we intervene? That organization seems to be collecting 'seeds' too."
Deva Path Pain spoke slowly, his voice echoing through the empty underground space. "Ignore them. The struggles of defective products are meaningless. Our goal is the complete 'God Tree Fruit.' Continue collecting the Tailed Beasts. As for Konoha's Nine-Tails... the time is nearly here."
His gaze seemed to pierce through countless barriers, looking toward the Land of Fire.
"Let the clamor continue a little longer. Before the true power of the gods, all such unorthodox methods will crumble to dust."
Before you continue
