Background and History
Guardian of the Ryūmyaku
Xi inherited the guardian contract for a major branch of the Ryūmyaku beneath the Land of Rain. Her lineage guided its life energy to benefit the surrounding land and prevent uncontrolled eruptions or exploitation. The contract belonged to an Uzumaki tradition in which selected members became Seal Guardian Miko or Seal Guardian Mages 27.
After defeating Hanzō and taking control of Amegakure, Pain located the Ryūmyaku’s core node and began forcibly overwriting the ancient contract. He imprisoned Xi as a living “key” and “stabilizer,” using her contracted bloodline to channel the Ryūmyaku’s power into his Rain Tiger at Will Technique. His larger objective was to merge with the Ryūmyaku and become its new consciousness 25 27.
Escape from Pain
Ling discovered Xi chained within the Six Binding Pillars, which continuously drained her power and life essence. She warned that simply freeing or killing her could destabilize the Ryūmyaku, but identified damaged runes left on the southeastern pillar by her clan’s resisting elders. Ling destroyed that pillar, freeing her while triggering a violent eruption of the already unstable Ryūmyaku 25 26.
Deva Path Pain intercepted their escape with Banshō Ten’in. An uncontrolled Ryūmyaku surge disrupted his technique, throwing Ling and Xi toward a fissure. Ling dragged her through it to a riverbank, where she explained Pain’s plans and recalled the requirements for establishing a replacement contract: Contract Blood, a Ryūmyaku Guide, and the Mightiest Seal 26 27.
Unable to safely cross Pain’s surveillance network, Xi helped Ling use his Fragment to imitate the chakra fluctuations in the rain. They approached Amegakure rather than the heavily watched borders and encountered Araki, a former Amegakure elite jōnin opposing Pain 28 29.
Destruction of the Secondary Node
Araki helped them plan an attack on a secondary Ryūmyaku node during a five-minute weakness in its defenses. Xi used her remaining contract power to destabilize the tower while Ling held off its guards. When Konan attacked, Araki shoved Xi out of the path of her paper assault and suffered wounds that ultimately proved fatal 30 31 33.
Following Ling’s identification of a crucial rune, Xi fired her remaining Uzumaki chakra at the same point as his attack. Their powers resonated and destroyed the tower. This worsened the Ryūmyaku’s rampage but disrupted the Rain Tiger at Will Technique, helping make their withdrawal possible and delaying Pain’s attempt to control the energy source. Tsunade, Kakashi, and Jiraiya arrived before Konan could kill them 32 33.
Recovery and Anbu Service
In Konoha, Tsunade designated Xi and Ling as subjects of the highest level of protection. Xi received treatment under Shizune’s supervision, with Tsunade prescribing medicine to replenish her severely depleted vitality. Although her contract remained damaged, she could still feel the Ryūmyaku’s distress and intended to resume her duty once strong enough 33 34.
Fox subsequently assigned her to the squad as a temporary special adviser. Rehabilitation exercises taught her to apply her perception in practical ninja operations. On the S-rank investigation of B-7 Outpost, she identified the gray mist’s soul-contaminating properties and maintained a protective barrier around the team. When her strength neared exhaustion, Fox escorted her away while Ling attacked the mist’s core 36 37 38.
Shrine of Sealing Evil and Later Events
Xi continued studying ancient contracts and sealing records preserved in Konoha. During the Shrine of Sealing Evil mission, she helped disrupt a Hexagram Barrier and created a temporary passage through the Erosion Abyss for Ling. After the shrine’s seal failed, her Evil-Breaking Arrow injured the released shadow, but its retaliatory mental assault overwhelmed her. Ling intervened and destroyed the creature; medical reinforcements stabilized both of them 40 41 42 43.
During Ling’s subsequent struggle with conceptual contamination, Xi visited regularly, bringing homemade sweets and ordinary village news. Her companionship helped him retain a sense of personal identity and connection to everyday life 45 46 47.
The Eyes of the End later targeted that bond. Enchanted wind chimes outside a souvenir shop induced a vision of Ling bleeding and becoming a monster. Xi shook off the image, but it left her uneasy as the organization concentrated its attacks on Ling’s closest companions 50.
Appearance
Xi has long crimson or dark-red hair and dark-red eyes. Her imprisonment leaves her pale and physically frail, though her complexion improves during treatment in Konoha 25 34 36 40.
- Training attire: Practical casual clothing that permits easy movement, with her hair tied back 36.
- Forehead mark: A diamond-shaped, faint Yin Seal that glows during the Four-Direction Sealing Formation 42.
Personality
Xi is gentle, polite, and deeply conscious of the burdens others bear for her. After escaping captivity, she apologizes to the injured Ling for involving him. Her care later becomes practical and consistent: she visits him with homemade pastries and dango, notices his distress, and reassures him without demanding explanations 27 45 46.
Her fear of Pain and corruptive ancient powers does not erase her sense of duty. She continues maintaining their camouflage despite exhaustion, joins the node attack while depleted, and resolves to recover so that Araki’s sacrifice and those of the Land of Rain’s resistance will not be wasted. Participating in Anbu training restores her confidence by allowing her to contribute rather than remain solely under protection 29 31 34 36.
Abilities and Skills
Ryūmyaku Guardian Contract
Xi’s inherited contract connects her bloodline to the Land of Rain’s Ryūmyaku. Even after Pain twists it, part of that connection survives 27 34.
- Senses the Ryūmyaku’s condition, including its continuing distress after her escape 34.
- Uses residual contract authority to disrupt the energy flow through Pain’s secondary node 30 31.
- Qualifies as the Contract Blood needed for a replacement contract. The procedure also requires a resonant Ryūmyaku Guide and the Mightiest Seal at the core 27.
- Cannot restore the contract alone; during recovery, she acknowledges that she lacks the strength even to approach the core again 34.
Energy Perception and Sensory Interference
Xi combines keen energy sensitivity with an innate affinity for natural energy. Fox considers her sensory talent superior to that of many outstanding Hyūga ninja, while emphasizing her need for systematic combat training 28 37.
- Detects distant enemies gathering chakra and estimates the type and approximate trajectory of their ninjutsu 37.
- Locates energy nodes in barriers and traps 37.
- Disturbs opponents’ chakra perception through subtle vibrations in her own chakra 36 37.
- Helps Ling disguise their energy as background fluctuations within Pain’s rain; unstable control risks immediately exposing them 28.
- Perceives soul contamination and hostile mental impressions within the gray mist 37.
- Can perceive chakra flow and the “colors” of emotions 46.
Uzumaki Chakra and Vitality
Her chakra is pale red, rich in vitality, and strongly associated with sealing. She possesses enormous reserves and tenacious life force, but prolonged imprisonment leaves those reserves severely depleted 30 33 37.
- Forms an ellipsoidal shield with flowing vortex-shaped runes to protect herself, Ling, and Fox from the gray mist 37.
- Initially estimates a maximum duration of about twenty minutes at full effort; stronger corrosion and repeated attacks rapidly drain the shield 37 38.
- Her warm, stable chakra appears to quiet the background whispers troubling Ling when she visits him; this is an observed effect rather than a named technique 45.
Sealing Jutsu
Xi’s techniques provide defense, disrupt hostile energy systems, and harm entities resistant to conventional attacks 31 41 43.
- Mirror Reflection: Creates a pale-red barrier after she bites her fingertip and forms hand seals. It blocks a guard’s sword and rebounds enough force to numb his arm and stagger him 31.
- Purification and Erosion Ring: Condenses vital Uzumaki chakra into a spinning light sphere used to interfere with the Hexagram Barrier and resist the Erosion Abyss’s corrosion. Maintaining it occupies much of her attention 41 42.
- Four-Direction Sealing Formation: Places four crimson sigils in a square, linking them into a temporary barrier that pushes aside and partially purifies surrounding mist. It creates a passage barely wide enough for one person and strains her enough to draw blood 42.
- Evil-Breaking Arrow: Concentrates her remaining chakra into a pale-red beam. It penetrates the unsealed shadow’s outer darkness and exposes its deeper core, but leaves her unable to withstand its retaliatory soul attack 43.
Ancient Contract Scholarship
Xi studies obscure Uzumaki records preserved in Konoha, including ancient writing, sealing formulas, and accounts of practices predating Ninshū 40.
- Provides Konoha with intelligence about Pain’s contract manipulation and the requirements for stabilizing the Ryūmyaku 27 33.
- Recognizes the danger of traditions that manipulate souls, life energy, and natural energy through cruel or forbidden methods 40.
- Some surviving texts remain difficult even for her to interpret 40.
Equipment and Items
- Ancient leather scroll: A record of contracts and sealing jutsu from the Uzumaki materials preserved in Konoha 40.
- B-7 investigation equipment: Issued a highest-grade gas mask, chakra-filtering talismans, antidotes, and energy supplements for entering the gray mist 37.
Relationships
- Uchiha Ling / Crow — Rescuer, field partner, and trusted companion. Their sensory and combat abilities become complementary through training. She later helps anchor his identity during his exposure to conceptual forces; their bond becomes an enemy target 26 36 46 47 50.
- Fox — Squad leader and rehabilitation instructor. Recognizes Xi’s sensory potential, teaches practical teamwork, and prioritizes her safety during dangerous missions 36 37 38 40.
- Araki — Resistance ally who respects the Uzumaki guardians as benefactors of the Land of Rain. Saves her from Konan’s attack; his sacrifice strengthens her determination to recover and fulfill her duty 29 31 34.
- Tsunade — Protector and medical overseer. Orders the highest level of protection for Xi, supports her recovery, and helps activate her faint Yin Seal 33 34 42.
- Shizune — Personally supervises Xi’s hospital recovery 33 34.
- Pain — Captor who exploits her contracted bloodline to stabilize and seize control of the Ryūmyaku 25 27.
- Konan — Enemy who attempts to kill her during the secondary-node attack 31 32.
