The unusual discovery at the ruins of the Uchiha meeting hall was like a stone cast into a still pond, sending deeper ripples through a limited circle within Konoha High Command.
Kakashi's detailed report and the energy samples he had collected were swiftly sent to the Sealing Squad and the Yamanaka Clan for in-depth analysis. The results were disturbing: the energy composition of the "awakened" mark on the stone tablet was extraordinarily ancient and complex. It contained not only a component resembling the pollution frequency of the "Eyes of the End," but, deeper within, an entanglement of a Yin Release chakra variant unique to the Uchiha Clan's Sharingan and a kind of... even more obscure "rift echo" that seemed to come from the underlying rules of the world.
"This isn't simply pollution clinging to it." Ibiki pointed at the energy chart during the emergency meeting. "It's more like a 'key' using a particular frequency-the Eyes of the End's pollution waves-to open a 'lock' that already existed but had been concealed by time and seals. Sealed within that 'lock' is a 'record' or 'residual trace of a contract' left during some period of Uchiha history, involving some form of higher-order power."
"The Uchiha's power... is connected to the 'rules' the Eyes of the End are pursuing?" Adviser Utatane Koharu's brow furrowed.
"Not necessarily directly," Jiraiya said thoughtfully. "More likely, the Uchiha power system itself-Sharingan, Mangekyō, Rinnegan-is a manifestation or application of some aspect of the Shinobi World's rules. The Eyes of the End may be exploiting that connection, trying to 'resonate' with historical Uchiha marks to indirectly influence or locate other things related to those rules-such as Ling's eyes, or the scattered 'echoes of the stars.'"
"Does Sasuke know about this?" Tsunade asked.
"He's been informed," Kakashi answered. "He's on his way back to the village. He's currently the foremost authority on interpreting the Uchiha Clan's secrets."
A day later, a travel-worn Sasuke Uchiha returned to Konoha. He first went to inspect the Naka River ruins himself. Standing before the damaged stone tablet, Sasuke slowly turned his Rinnegan, his purple ocular power spreading like spilled mercury as it meticulously scanned every trace.
His expression gradually shifted from calm to grave, and finally his brows drew tightly together.
"How is it?" asked Kakashi, who had accompanied him.
"Troublesome." Sasuke was concise, but his tone carried a rare hint of uncertainty. "This mark... is extremely old. It may date back to before the Uchiha Clan migrated south, or even earlier. What's sealed inside isn't a specific memory, but a kind of... 'coordinate' and 'warning.'"
"A coordinate? A warning?"
"Yes." Sasuke pointed at several nearly illegible ancient variant Uchiha characters on the tablet. "Combined with the energy structure I can see through the Rinnegan, this mark points to a spacetime coordinate where an... 'observation rift' once opened nearby. The warning says, 'Stay away from the echo of the rift. Do not believe the lie of purification.'"
Kakashi's heart tightened. "An observation rift? The lie of purification?"
"I don't know precisely what they refer to." Sasuke shook his head. "But the energy characteristics of this 'echo of the rift' closely resemble the Eyes of the End's pollution frequency mentioned in your report, as well as that cold intent Ling described. And the 'lie of purification'... very likely refers to the whole doctrine of 'purity' and an 'eternal steady state' that the Eyes of the End preach."
He paused, then added, "More importantly, since being activated through 'resonance,' this mark has been slowly releasing an extremely low-frequency 'echo wave.' It has no effect on ordinary people, but for those with Sharingan, or people like Ling who are deeply entangled with power on the level of rules, it may produce a latent 'attraction' or 'interference' effect. Prolonged exposure to these 'echo waves' might cause their powers to run wild, intensify their visions, or even... guide them toward the unknown place those 'coordinates' indicate."
Kakashi immediately grasped the severity of the problem. Not only had the ruins themselves become a new source of pollution and a point of danger, but this further confirmed the Eyes of the End's knowledge and exploitation of Uchiha history and even older secrets.
"Can we block or eliminate the mark's 'echo waves'?"
"It would be difficult," Sasuke admitted. "The mark has already partially fused with the history accumulated in the stone tablet itself and the leyline energy. Forcibly eliminating it could destroy the ruins or even trigger an unpredictable energy backlash. Perhaps... Ling's power could be tried. His eyes seem to have a special ability to interfere with 'rules' and 'concepts.' But the risks are unknown."
Sasuke's findings were swiftly reported. Tsunade, Jiraiya, Ibiki, and the others held an emergency meeting with him. They decided that the Sealing Squad would place stronger isolation and suppression barriers around the ruins to reduce the spread of the "echo waves" as much as possible. Meanwhile, once Ling's physical and mental condition had stabilized further and a thorough assessment had been completed, they would consider having him attempt to "interfere" with the tablet's mark with Sasuke's assistance. The goal would be to sever its "resonance"-activated state and return it to "slumber," rather than eliminate it completely.
Ling learned of the news in his hospital room, along with the new task he might have to undertake. The pressure returned, but this time, alongside the heaviness in his heart, there was an indescribable... stirring.
When he heard the terms "observation rift" and "ancient Uchiha warning," the dim speck of starlight deep within his Eye of Purification and Erosion pulsed uncontrollably. Even more fragmented, more bizarre images forced their way into his mind: no longer a temple beneath the stars, but an endless, writhing dark void. Enormous, uncanny structures resembling both biological organs and mechanical constructs floated within it. Countless purple "eyes" opened and closed among them, coldly "watching" an ancient battlefield below, ablaze with war and split by cracks in the earth. On that battlefield, he vaguely saw figures. In some of their eyes, Sharingan and even Rinnegan patterns turned; around others flowed energy similar to purifying erosion power, but far more violent. They were fighting indescribable shadows pouring out of a "rift"...
"Gah!" Ling abruptly covered his eyes. Blood seeped between his fingers, and the searing headache nearly made him pass out.
"Ling!" The medical ninja beside him immediately stepped forward.
"I'm... all right." Ling panted, struggling to settle himself. "I just... saw some new visions. About the Uchiha... and an ancient war..."
Word immediately reached Tsunade. She and Jiraiya hurried over.
After hearing Ling's account, Jiraiya and Tsunade exchanged grave looks.
"It seems that the Uchiha Stone Tablet's 'resonance' not only activated the mark, but may also have stimulated even older 'memories' or 'information' sealed deep within Ling's eyes through some connection we don't yet understand," Jiraiya analyzed. "The battlefield he saw may involve a conflict in ancient times between the Shinobi World-or a broader world-and an 'observation rift,' or something similar. The Uchiha Clan may once have participated in or witnessed that conflict."
"And the Eyes of the End call themselves the 'Rite of Correction,' pursuing 'purity' and an 'eternal steady state'..." Tsunade continued. "Could they be connected to those shadows pouring out of the 'rift'? Or are they an extreme continuation of the ideology of another side in that war?"
The clues kept multiplying, yet the puzzle only grew larger and more complex.
"Ling isn't fit to approach the tablet immediately in his current condition," Tsunade ordered. "Prioritize stabilizing his mind and helping him process the information in these new visions. Sasuke, we may need you to assist Ling for a while. Use your Rinnegan and your knowledge of Uchiha history to help him understand and sort through these chaotic visions. We might find more clues about the enemy's nature and our own powers."
Sasuke nodded his agreement. He already had an interest in investigating Ling's strange eyes and the ancient secrets that might lie behind them.
And so another item was added to Ling's daily routine: "vision analysis" sessions with Sasuke accompanying him, usually with Inoichi Yamanaka or Ibiki monitoring nearby.
The process was far from easy. Ling had to actively recall and describe those fragmented, disturbing images, while Sasuke used the Rinnegan's insight, together with the knowledge of ancient legends, lost civilizations, and records of the Ōtsutsuki Clan he had gathered during his travels, to try to interpret them and draw connections.
"...Those enormous structures don't resemble any known architecture in the Shinobi World. They look somewhat like exaggerated, enlarged versions of the Ōtsutsuki Clan ruins I've seen in other dimensions, but more... 'organic' and 'chaotic.'" Sasuke pointed at the rough sketch Ling had drawn from his descriptions. "The purple 'eyes' might be a symbol, or a physical manifestation of some kind of observation device. The 'cold gaze' you sensed resembles the Eyes of the End's intent, but it's more... inhuman."
"The energy on the battlefield... was very chaotic. There was Yin Release chakra I recognized-the Uchiha's-and natural energy resembling senjutsu. There was also a kind of... gray power that seemed capable of swallowing all light. It was somewhat like my purifying erosion power, but more primitive and more violent." Ling struggled to recall. "Those shadows... had no fixed shape. They were like living darkness. They could pollute the land, twist life, and even... assimilate ninja. The eyes of those who were assimilated would turn that purple..."
Sasuke's gaze sharpened. "Assimilate them? Turn their eyes purple? That reminds me of fragments of some very old Uchiha secrets regarded as taboo. Legend says that along one dangerous branch of the Sharingan's evolution, there's a state in which erosion by an 'alien star thought' causes ocular power to mutate and the personality to be lost. It's called the 'Eye of Void Erosion' or the 'Star-Mad Eye.' One of its traits is purple-tinged eyes, with the person losing their self and becoming a puppet of some higher will. Clan records sternly warned later generations to stay away from any 'call of the stars' or 'whispers of the rift' that might trigger this mutation."
"The Eye of Void Erosion... the Star-Mad Eye..." Ling repeated under his breath, feeling that these terms seemed to have some relationship with the Eye of Purification and Erosion that was both opposing and connected.
"The tablet's warning, 'Do not believe the lie of purification,'" Sasuke continued, "may refer to the ideas of 'purification,' 'ascension,' and 'eternity' preached by this 'alien star thought' or these 'whispers of the rift.' They use freedom from suffering and the attainment of eternity as bait, but in reality, they devour individual wills and turn them into 'components' for their expansion. Because Uchiha power directly touches the soul and mind, it may be especially sensitive to this temptation and erosion."
A chill passed through Ling. If the "purity" the Eyes of the End believed in was essentially this will-devouring "assimilation," then their goal was probably not merely to "correct the world," but to completely "format" it and incorporate it into that cold "observation network." As for his own Eye of Purification and Erosion, they regarded it as a "key" or something to be "recovered," yet its powers-purification and harmonization-also seemed to stand in some opposition to that power of "assimilation."
"I need to understand my eyes better." Ling looked at Sasuke. "Mr. Sasuke, can your Rinnegan 'see' deeper into my eyes? Apart from the purifying erosion power and the fragment's energy, what exactly is that speck of 'starlight'?"
Sasuke was silent for a moment before answering, "We can try, but we must be extremely careful. The Rinnegan can observe the fundamental forms of chakra and energy. But your eyes may involve something deeper. I'll need your full cooperation, and we must do it under Senior Inoichi's supervision. At the first sign of anything unusual, we stop."
With rigorous preparations and protective measures in place, a deep "joint observation" of Ling's eyes was conducted in an isolation room. Ling relaxed his mind and released a limited amount of the Eye of Purification and Erosion's perception. Sasuke activated his Rinnegan, concentrating his ocular power into an extraordinarily fine "probe" that carefully "touched" the outer edge of the energy field around Ling's eyes, avoiding direct stimulation of the core.
Inoichi Yamanaka enveloped them both in a powerful mental field, ready to intervene and stabilize their minds at any moment.
Through the Rinnegan, Ling's eyes displayed an astonishingly complex structure. The surface layer held rotating Sharingan pinwheels and flowing purifying erosion power. The middle layer consisted of deep-purple channels of ancient Yin Release fragment energy. And at the very core... Sasuke "saw" that dim speck of starlight.
It was not simply a point of energy. It was more like an extremely miniaturized "rule singularity" constantly coming into being and fading away, containing incomprehensibly complex streams of information and a... faint but tenacious frequency of "calling," as though from somewhere far, far away. This "call" was utterly different from the cold "attraction" within the tablet's "echo waves." It was warmer, more ancient, carrying a will to protect and resist.
What surprised Sasuke even more was that when his Rinnegan's ocular power approached that speck of starlight, the power deep within his own Rinnegan-the gift from the Sage of Six Paths representing the rules of "creation" and "life and death"-actually produced an extraordinarily faint resonance! It was as though the two shared some ancient connection of common origin on the level of rules.
"Your eyes... that speck of 'starlight' at their deepest point," Sasuke said, withdrawing his ocular power, his expression utterly serious. "It may not be a 'fragment' or 'pollution.' It's more like... a 'rule seed' or 'beacon' left behind by some extremely ancient and powerful being before it fell or dissipated. Its essence is 'harmony' and 'preservation.' It bears similarities to the source of some of the Sage of Six Paths' power, but focuses more on 'purifying anomalies' and 'stabilizing reality.' That may be the true origin of the name 'Purifying Erosion.'"
"And what the Eyes of the End want may not simply be your eyes as a 'key.' They may want to capture or annihilate this 'seed,' because its very existence is an obstacle and a threat to the 'absolute purity' and 'formatting' they pursue."
Ling froze. Something like that lay dormant in the deepest part of his eyes? A "rule seed" from an ancient being? It explained a great deal: why purifying erosion power could cleanse pollution and interfere with rules; why it reacted so strongly to erosion by the Eyes of the End; why he saw those visions of ancient war.
"Then... what should I do?" Ling asked.
"Nourish it. Understand it. But don't let it assimilate you completely," Sasuke said. "It's power, but also a responsibility, and an enormous target. You need to find your own way to coexist with this 'seed' and guide it. The Heartfire Plan provides you with belief energy. That may be a safe way to 'nourish' it. Your personal will and emotions are the key to preventing the vast will contained within this ancient 'seed' from devouring you."
Although this deep observation did not completely unravel the mystery, it gave Ling a direction for understanding his own power and revealed a possibly even more ancient origin behind the conflict.
While Ling was digesting this information, the "environmental scans" in other parts of Konoha also brought troubling news.
Following the historical archives and the Uchiha ruins, faint traces of clinging "conceptual haze" and extremely low-frequency anomalous fluctuations resembling the tablet's "echo waves" were detected one after another at several other sites in Konoha with historical symbolism or strong resonance with collective memory-near the statues commemorating the Battle of the Valley of the End between First Hokage Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha, at the remains of certain ancient sealing jutsu formulas established by Second Hokage Tobirama Senju, and even in some memorial groves honoring large numbers of those who had died in the wars.
Although there were no further cases of individuals being as visibly affected as Nohara Shin, the pollution's reach and depth of penetration were quietly expanding. The Eyes of the End's "Environmental Resonance Induction" was advancing steadily, like an invisible net slowly tightening.
Konoha's countermeasures were also escalating. More patrol teams began their rounds wearing improved "mental stabilization charms." The scientific ninja tool team worked overtime to produce small-area "Concept Purification Devices," giving priority to staff responsible for key areas. The Yamanaka and Hyuga Clans joined forces to scan high-risk areas regularly.
But everyone knew these measures treated only the symptoms, not the root cause. The real key lay in stopping the pollution sources from continuing to operate and helping Ling grow as quickly as possible until he could perform large-scale "Concept Purification" or even "Rule Harmonization."
The intensity of Ling's training increased again. In addition to his daily taijutsu rehabilitation, Sharingan control, anti-induction training, and runestone connections, he now had regular "ancient information sorting" and "Starlight Resonance Guidance" exercises with Sasuke. Using the Six Paths power contained in his Rinnegan, Sasuke attempted to "touch" and "stimulate" the speck of starlight in Ling's eyes with extreme gentleness, helping Ling perceive its nature and call more clearly and learn how to draw more effectively on the power of the rules of "purification and preservation" within it.
The process was fraught with danger. Every resonance guidance session could cause violent fluctuations among the several powers within Ling, bringing pain and fresh assaults of visions. But Ling gritted his teeth and persevered. He could feel his control over the Eye of Purification and Erosion, and his understanding of the ancient power in that speck of starlight, deepening slowly but steadily. He even began trying to let a trace of starlight's power suffuse his eyes while maintaining his surface vision, granting him a clearer, more fundamental perspective of "insight." Through this vision, although the world remained filled with torrents of information, the chaotic underlying threads of rules and the conceptual haze became easier to distinguish and identify.
He gave this state a name: "Star-Seer Eye."
Although it was still rudimentary, could be maintained only briefly, and consumed enormous amounts of energy, it was undoubtedly a crucial step in the right direction.
While all of Konoha was tensely responding to the worsening conceptual pollution and Ling struggled to grow, the information stream within the dark-purple orb before the "High Priest" in the shadows refreshed once more.
"Target 'Eyes of True Vision' awakening accelerating... faint but definite signs of 'origin starlight' activity detected... strong rejection response to preset 'guidance protocol'..."
"Environmental Resonance Induction effects meet projections. Disturbance levels in target region's 'historical cognition field' continue to rise. Signs of loosening detected in 'collective unconscious defense threshold'..."
"Warning: intervention by high-energy-level 'reincarnation rules' fluctuations detected, producing synergistic resonance with 'origin starlight.' Threat level raised."
The High Priest silently watched the data stream, tapping his fingers in the air to adjust the parameters.
"The tempering of the 'key'... is faster than expected. The intervention of 'reincarnation'... is a variable, but also an opportunity," he murmured. "Increase the frequency of 'environmental resonance.' Deploy the second batch of 'conceptual dust motes.' Focus contamination on the key emotional nodes in the target's 'belief network'-the places frequented by those with the deepest bonds to him."
"At the same time, initiate phase two of 'Rift Echo': activate the 'attraction coordinates' in all marked historical nodes and attempt to construct a temporary, low-intensity 'rule resonance field.' Objective: disrupt the synergy between 'reincarnation rules' and 'origin starlight,' and further stimulate the host of the 'Eyes of True Vision,' forcing him to use his power and expose its essential nature more frequently, allowing us to analyze and capture its 'harmonization' pattern."
"Yes, High Priest," came the response from the darkness.
Finally, the High Priest turned his gaze to a specially marked, complex data model within the orb, closely linked to the Naka River ruins.
"The ancient Uchiha mark... the 'void erosion' information it contains may be useful. During the next round of 'guidance,' attempt to inject disguised fragments of information on advancement to the 'Eye of Void Erosion,' inducing anxiety in the target over his power and fear of 'losing control'... Seeds of conflict often sprout fastest from within."
The orders were issued, and the machinery in the shadows accelerated once again.
Konoha, evening.
After finishing his day's training, Ling slowly walked back to the hospital along relatively quiet streets, accompanied by Xi and "Fox." This was a new rule: whenever Ling was outside an enclosed training area, trusted companions had to accompany him. The doctors had recommended this moderate exercise to aid his physical and mental recovery.
The setting sun bathed the village in warm gold and red. There were few pedestrians on the streets, and occasionally children ran past, laughing. Everything seemed peaceful and ordinary.
Yet through the "Star-Seer Eye" Ling had quietly activated, this peaceful scene was veiled in an extremely faint, almost omnipresent gray "haze." In particular, when they passed Ichiraku Ramen-a place Ling had often visited with Kakashi and Naruto-the "haze" around the shop's sign and entrance curtains was distinctly denser than in the surrounding area. Mixed into it was an extremely subtle erosion frequency targeting the concepts of "memories of bonds" and "warm everyday life."
Ling's steps faltered slightly.
"What's wrong, Mr. Ling?" Xi asked with concern.
"Nothing." Ling shook his head, suppressing the chill in his heart. The enemy would not spare even these small anchors of emotion.
He raised his head and looked toward Hokage Rock. Through the "Star-Seer Eye," the grafted conceptual threads of "isolation" and "rejection" along the edges of Hokage Rock's outline seemed a little clearer. Though still faint, they were indeed slowly growing.
The pollution spread silently, eroding the village's memories and emotional bonds.
And under pressure and resistance, the starlight in his eyes was growing brighter, little by little.
Back in his hospital room, Ling stood at the window and gazed at the village as it gradually sank into night.
Starlight flickered quietly deep within his eyes, producing a faint, opposing resonance with the extremely weak yet heart-rattling fluctuations of "attraction coordinates" coming from the distant memorial grove.
Echoes of the past were calling, and the seed of starlight was sprouting.
A hidden war spanning time and space, involving the very origins of rules, had quietly unfolded in every corner of Konoha.
