Properties and Uses
Currency
Spirit Sources pay for both ordinary necessities and a cultivator’s advancement 39.
- Living expenses: Food and rent are recurring costs 28 108 330.
- Cultivation: Pills, cultivation methods, spell arts, and instruction can require payment 105 154 274 293.
- Equipment: Spirit Swords must be purchased and repaired; their durability makes combat an ongoing expense 99 173.
- Medical care: Injuries can become financially crippling for cultivators without savings 39 481.
- Information and services: Spirit Sources purchase intelligence, recommendations, sparring sessions, and answers to questions 117 125 137 456.
Relationship to Spirit Stones
- Spirit Stones can be refined into Spirit Sources 376.
- Spirit Stones occupy substantially more storage space. A delivery of five hundred thousand exceeds Jiang Man’s Storage Law Treasure capacity, forcing him to arrange exchanges with his companions 376.
- Some Ancient Cultivators possess Spirit Stones rather than Spirit Sources 457.

Cultivation and Financial Pressure
Spirit Sources determine which cultivation paths a person can afford. Sword Cultivators need suitable weapons and repairs, while Body Cultivators consume large quantities of Beast Meat and Beast Blood. Spell Cultivators generally spend less overall, although their spell arts can be more expensive 99.
Growing stronger does not eliminate financial pressure. Even lineage-backed students have limited allowances and spend most of their available funds on cultivation. Later, Jiang Man’s costly Return to the Void pills and limited Spirit Sources slow his progress despite his talent 162 416.
Financial dependence can also restrict personal freedom. Lineages use resource contracts to bind promising cultivators, while marriage alliances offer support in exchange for marriage and some autonomy. Chen Yu’s contractual compensation obligations leave him unable to afford the Dream-Sleep Technique when he needs it to recover 73 154 217.
Loans and Repayment
- Interest-bearing loans: Jiang Man proposes repaying 20,000 for an 18,000 loan from Chang Qiwen the following year 96.
- Accumulated debt: Song Qing’s lending eventually reaches 42,000, with annual interest totaling 6,000 250.
- Non-cash settlement: Jiang Man uses Secret Realm qualifications to settle debts involving Luo Xuan and Song Qing 294 361.
- Personal loyalty: Song Qing continues to value Jiang Man’s help even when others claim his loans will never be repaid 224.
Notable Transactions
| Event | Amount | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Sale of Jiang Man’s identity as Number 210 | 80,000 | Fang Yong sells the exclusive information and passes 55,000 to Jiang Man 137 |
| Funds gathered for Fang Yong | 148,000 | Jiang Man takes the money after confronting him, then buys pills and formation materials 258 |
| Release of the ancient altar | 800,000 | Ren Qian offers 200,000 per Mind and Spirit Chain; Jiang Man breaks all four and exchanges the proceeds for pills 347 |
| Village Chief’s payment | 3,400,000 | Delivered while Jiang Man recovers in the Secret Realm village 481 |
| Long-term investigation of Jiang Man | 3,000,000 offered | Fang Yong accepts the intelligence assignment and discusses the accompanying infiltration threat with Jiang Man 573 |
Use as Leverage
- Buying cooperation: Payments succeed where prolonged pressure fails when the Woman in the Black Immortal Skirt seeks a meeting with Jiang Man 249.
- Controlling information: Exclusive intelligence can be sold under Sect-issued contracts that permit recovery of the payment if confidentiality is broken 137.
- Extracting testimony: Ren Qian turns the captive Sanhe Immortal Spirit’s desire to meet Jiang Man into an incentive to provide information and earn Spirit Sources 347.
- Disrupting operations: Restrictions on delivering Spirit Sources stall negotiations with the Spirit Blossom Envoy, even when the paying factions have sufficient funds 263 332.
- Settling grievances: Jiang Man collects payments from Spirit Spring Mountain personnel to erase their insults from his notebook 451.
