Background and History

More than three hundred years before the current story, the Immortal Gate fought the Immortal Court. The conflict devastated the land, depleted spiritual qi, and left repercussions that continued into the new era. Accounts of the catastrophe describe two hundred years of crop failure, widespread starvation, and the disappearance of spirit medicines and spirit trees 2 516 528.

The Four Great Immortal Gates rebuilt order from the ruins. Around a hundred years before the current story, exceptionally talented cultivators rewrote cultivation methods and introduced a system that ordinary people could practice regardless of talent. The gates established cultivation venues and sent instructors into villages. Cultivators used spiritual qi to irrigate barren soil, making limited grain production possible and gradually restoring the land 2 297.

This reconstruction developed into Immortal Gate Great Governance. Its expansion serves two connected purposes: reclaiming damaged territory and suppressing the unrest inherited from the previous era. The system improves upon Immortal Court methods and technology rather than discarding that foundation entirely 297 330 543.

Organization

Leadership and Departments

Office / Institution Known Function
Four headmasters Lead the Four Great Immortal Gates; the Imperial Masters rank among the strongest figures beneath them 516.
Eight Imperial Masters Oversee the gates’ affairs. Each gate has two; all eight can challenge figures on the List, although they are also restricted from freely entering the outside world 516.
Four great elders heading special departments True Person Taihua belongs to this group and commands both the Mountain-Suppressing Office and Dinghai Hall 218.
Immortal Dao Pavilion Holds accounts of Evil Gods, immortal cultivation methods, and Heaven-Turning Spell Arts, including the Evil God Record 205.
Inner Sect Admits cultivators through competitive examinations with stricter thresholds than those of ordinary sects 300.

Notable Personnel

  • Dongfang Chengji — An Imperial Master of the Dao One Immortal Gate. He oversees major affairs, suppresses external threats, and attacks through the Sun-Moon Divine Bow 510 516.
  • True Person Taihua — A great elder with substantial authority across the organization. His cultivation is sealed and he is exiled, but a later decree permits him to reclaim his power against powerful enemies 218 383 497.
  • Qi Li — Leads the Immortal Gate force that enters the Extreme Sea after its lockdown is broken 516.
  • Shangguan Zheng — An Immortal Gate instructor who assesses students by their present ability and comprehension rather than talent alone 454 457.
  • Shen Yao — An Immortal Gate cultivator who participates in the Grand Competition and later accompanies an overseas patrol 266 373.

Extreme Sea Mission Administration

The Extreme Sea mission has a local administrative structure under two overall supervisors, one surnamed Ye and the other Bai. Both possess authority to command the operation, creating competing spheres of influence 509.

Immortal Gate Great Governance

Land Reclamation and Public Survival

  • Universal cultivation: The new system enables people without exceptional talent to cultivate, supplying spiritual qi needed to sustain agriculture and restore depleted land 2 297.
  • Territorial restoration: Reclamation teams gradually repair withered mountain ranges. The spread of governance also drives away some lingering mist and strengthens the Immortal Gate’s active forces 315 352.
  • Long-term service: The Ji Family sends half its direct descendants to assist reclamation for a hundred years, earning substantial merit 417.
  • Medical development: Treatment capabilities continue to improve, although access depends on entering the governance area and progressing through its educational institutions 439.
  • Prioritized production: Spirit swords and dharma robes receive priority in research and forging because they are necessities; other law treasures remain comparatively scarce 373.

Territorial Expansion

The Immortal Gate expands recruitment by incorporating independent sects and supporting them with resources. Cultivators who were previously excluded from established sects gain another route forward: reaching Golden Core in an incorporated institution, then taking an examination for admission to a larger sect’s Inner Sect 334.

  • Sects inside an expanding governance area must accept incorporation or relocate outside it 334.
  • Incorporated sects must obey Immortal Gate decrees, surrendering part of their former independence 334.
  • Some sects welcome incorporation because it grants legitimate access to cultivation methods they previously had to smuggle 334.
  • Recruitment officials can call overwhelming reinforcements, particularly when an incorporation dispute exposes collusion with an Evil God 345.

Law and Enforcement

  • Cultivation identity: Official methods are uniformly distributed and revised, carrying distinctive auras that establish a cultivator’s identity 2.
  • Unauthorized methods: Practicing an ancient or otherwise unusual method can expose a cultivator upon entering governed territory. Authorities may classify the practitioner as a Heretical Demonic Outer Dao, with capture or death as possible consequences 2.
  • Evil God investigations: An outbreak of Evil God aura draws an appropriate response, while collusion—especially with an unidentified Evil God—is treated as a grave offense 149 345.
  • Disciplinary authority: The Immortal Gate can seal cultivation, impose exile, and issue warrants, as demonstrated by Taihua’s punishment and the warrant for Drunken Floating Life 383.
  • Protection of advancement rights: Officials cannot lawfully trap an Immortal in a sect by refusing transfer. Such obstruction leads to an Enforcement Hall investigation 530.

Cultivation System

Standardized Methods and Education

The Simple Method is central to the new system’s accessibility. Immortal Gate Great Governance also broadens access to spell arts and technical knowledge that ordinary cultivators could rarely obtain in the previous era 297 330.

  • The educational aim is to give cultivators somewhere to consult knowledge when they wish to learn, rather than require everyone to master every subject 332.
  • Its training emphasizes spiritual qi control, physical development, and visualization. Raising cultivation while neglecting these foundations can leave a cultivator ineffective in combat 247.
  • Immortal Gate disciples generally receive better spiritual qi, resources, and instruction than sect disciples, but those advantages do not guarantee victory 266.
  • Sect personnel may travel to the Immortal Gate for further study. Access to specialized Pavilion books can require years of advance queuing 205.
  • Most Ascension Stage Student Cultivators pursue further study there because ordinary sects have little left to teach them 530.

Examinations and Advancement Qualifications

Mechanism Function / Limitation
Inner Sect examinations Admission remains competitive even within the Immortal Gate. Unsuccessful candidates may attempt an ordinary sect’s Inner Sect examination instead 300.
Realm advancement qualifications Foundation Establishment, Golden Core, and Primordial Spirit advancement generally require competition for places. Exceptions at the Grand Competition are extraordinarily rare 266.
Opportunity restrictions Some secret realms require Inner Sect membership and at least Golden Core cultivation; Outer Sect disciples are barred from entering merely to risk their lives 196.
Heavenly Immortal qualifications Qualification is still required, but a surplus exists because the young system has produced relatively few Heavenly Immortals 574.
Transfer after immortality An Immortal wishing to move from a sect to the Immortal Gate needs only to apply; the application cannot legitimately be refused 530.

The Immortal Gate’s Dao Path

Aspect Immortal Gate Method Immortal Court Method
Foundation Uses comprehension of heaven and earth to nourish a Dao seed within oneself 545. Pursues existing traces of the Great Dao, merging with and ultimately replacing them 545.
Principal advantage Has an unknown upper limit and permits strength independent of heaven and earth’s decline 545. Offers a more visible route toward enduring existence alongside heaven, earth, and the Great Dao 545.
Principal limitation Extremely difficult; advancing beyond the end of the Immortal Dao requires one’s own power 545. Great Dao fruition seats are limited, making the end of the path particularly definite 545.

The List and Power Restrictions

The List regulates exceptionally powerful beings whose unrestricted presence could destabilize the outside world. Some are confined to Immortal Gate territory and forbidden from acting freely on a large scale 189.

  • Environmental protection: Even without serious combat, released powerhouses can thin spiritual qi and make reclamation harder 520.
  • Reinforced territory: Jiang Man concludes that Immortal Gate territory likely contains sufficient force of the earth to accommodate powerful combat, unlike the fragile land outside 509.
  • Adjustable limits: The permitted cultivation threshold for listed figures going outside is raised from Primordial Spirit to Ascension Stage 426.
  • Emergency release: During the Extreme Sea crisis, restrictions on Qing Dai and the Bai Family Ancestor are lifted to meet the danger 516.
  • Enforced inclusion: Meng Qiewei orders the Ancestral Dragon onto the List and attacks when he refuses. Tantai Xiaotian likewise recalls refusing an earlier invitation and subsequently being suppressed 547.
  • Protection and prestige: According to the Water God, listed status also protects its holders from interference, and some cultivators of comparable realm resent being excluded 535.

The Ten Great Evil Gods are described as counterparts to the List, not as ordinary Immortal Gate personnel. Records of their identities are restricted to the organization’s core 560.

Military Strength and Limitations

Suppression and Response

  • Fallen Evil Gods: Great Governance can suppress an Evil God’s power, body, and consciousness, preventing recovery or escape. Spatial turmoil can weaken this control 274.
  • Sanctum tracing: During the Extreme Sea inspection, Qi Li destroys a defiant Evil God’s manifestation and uses its blood to trace its sanctum for confinement 516.
  • Large-scale containment: Responding forces seal sea regions and suppress escaping power fluctuations to protect living beings outside the battlefield 516.
  • Escalating reinforcements: Opponents regard an Immortal Gate call for help as particularly dangerous because the strength of the arriving reinforcements is unpredictable 560.
  • Protective qualifications: Certain advancement qualifications can function as life-saving safeguards and alert the Immortal Gate when triggered 399.

Strategic Constraints

Despite its strength, the Immortal Gate remains short-handed. Its forces maintain stability, confront ancient powerhouses, and fight prolonged battles in the nothingness. The four gates cannot freely concentrate their strongest personnel on every incident 436 516.

  • The Imperial Masters themselves cannot freely enter the outside world, limiting direct intervention 516.
  • External patrols are partly outsourced because internal law-enforcement personnel are insufficient 509.
  • Its defense is not absolute: enemy forces eventually seize Nanyue despite intervention by both stationed personnel and hidden experts 402.
  • Zhulong’s emergence disrupts the balance of heaven and earth, exposing hidden forces and destabilizing older seals 528 529.

Relationships

  • Immortal Court — The previous ruling order and the Immortal Gate’s wartime opponent. Its methods and technology remain an important foundation for the new system 528 543.
  • Wuyun Sect — Participates in Great Governance through cultivation, recruitment expansion, missions, and specialist cooperation with Immortal Gate officials 218 334 485.
  • Jiang Man — A Wuyun Sect cultivator whom the Immortal Gate values highly. It intervenes to protect his ascension, while his Drunken Floating Life identity is separately subjected to a warrant and later granted a reward 383 457 497 534.
  • Ji Family — Supplies direct descendants for reclamation work and maintains ties to influential figures operating within the system 417.
  • Sun-Moon Immortal Journey — An opposing Evil God faction demanding the removal of cultivation restrictions and public release of spell arts. Its agents attempt unrest and maintain infiltrators within governed institutions 240 333.
  • Path Pursuers — Ancient-cultivation adherents who summon sages without regard for the consequences. The Immortal Gate covertly intervenes against their Nine Luminaries Sect operation 532.
  • Water God — Promotes disasters and targeted killings to destabilize governance; his Extreme Sea operation escalates into the Zhulong crisis 402 516.
  • Meng Qiewei — Subject to restrictions on powerful beings, yet also enforces the List against the Ancestral Dragon 189 201 547.

Opposition and Criticism

  • Moonlit Sect doctrine: Calls universal cultivation a deception, claiming that beginning at sixteen deprives talented children of their best cultivation years and keeps them serving the strong. This is presented as the sect’s accusation, not an established account of Immortal Gate policy 229.
  • Sun-Moon Immortal Journey propaganda: Demands equality in cultivation, unrestricted spell arts, and the sharing of Immortal Gate achievements 240.
  • Ancient opponents’ accusation: Some hostile cultivators blame the Immortal Gate for devastating the world before presenting its reconstruction as salvation 352.
  • Recognized benefits: Even Evil God figures acknowledge that Great Governance saves ordinary lives. The Water God admits that sustaining the population after a forced change of eras places an extraordinary burden on the gates 149 535.
