Background / History

Childhood companion and the marriage scheme

According to Jiang Man’s account to investigators, the village assigned Old Yellow Ox to him when he was ten. Before Jiang Man’s mental affliction cleared, the ox was his only playmate, friend, and family. At sixteen, Jiang Man took him to Falling Cloud City and entered the Azure Cloud Pavilion of the Cloudfront Office 1 217.

When Jiang Man was eighteen, Old Yellow Ox unexpectedly spoke in human language and asked whether he wanted a wife. He directed Jiang Man to follow a temporary stream to an immortal lake and take a woman’s fallen immortal robes. Jiang Man followed these instructions and brought back the woman who became his wife, Meng Qiewei 1.

Old Yellow Ox said arranging this single marriage had exhausted his available power. He was surprised when Jiang Man’s mental affliction disappeared afterward and puzzled by the emergence of the Peerless Heaven’s Chosen Destiny 2.

Meng Qiewei’s pursuit

Meng Qiewei traced the methods Old Yellow Ox had used against her and exerted destructive influence on his body. Jiang Man drew this power out, receiving a threatening message from his wife in the process. Old Yellow Ox subsequently asked Jiang Man to take him along if he joined a sect, and Jiang Man agreed 18.

The ox initially doubted Jiang Man could satisfy the Destiny’s requirements. His skepticism weakened after Jiang Man completed the Visualization Method’s thirteenth layer without resources, crossing its final bottleneck in fewer than four days. Later, Old Yellow Ox acknowledged that Jiang Man was the first person he would associate with a Peerless Heavenly Prodigy 15 35 62.

When Meng Qiewei finally appeared in Jiang Man’s room, Old Yellow Ox refused to indulge his attempts to flee and told him to face his wife 94.

Confrontation and arrest

Meng Qiewei eventually confronted Old Yellow Ox directly. Her attack covered his body in cracks, but he declined to retaliate because using his own power would expose him to the Immortal Gate and force both him and Jiang Man to flee. Their confrontation ended after she made clear that she accepted her marriage and would not harm Jiang Man 200 201.

Immediately afterward, a paper figure released a mist cluster beside him. An Evil God aura was detected at his residence, and he was restrained and taken into custody. Although the aura disappeared during the investigation, officials could not determine whether it had been concealed 201.

While imprisoned, Old Yellow Ox relied on Jiang Man to arrange matters outside. A great demon offered to awaken his intelligence and help him escape, apparently mistaking him for an ordinary ox. Old Yellow Ox was unimpressed by the offer: the prison provided unusually good fodder, and Ren Qian’s silence prevented him from learning much about the investigation 207.

Restricted release and the Demon Lord’s informant

Old Yellow Ox was eventually returned to Jiang Man, visibly sturdier and with a glossy coat. His release carried continuing restrictions 221:

  • He could not leave Cloud Glow Peak without permission.
  • Any unusual behavior had to be reported.
  • Both he and Jiang Man were subject to aura checks every two or three years.

Zhao Tiankuo, the Demon Lord, subsequently treated Old Yellow Ox as an informant he had personally enlightened. Old Yellow Ox disclosed this contact to Jiang Man and later sent Zhao Tiankuo reports of Jiang Man’s cultivation progress. The reports were so extraordinary that Zhao initially suspected the ox had lost his mind 224 250 256.

Later dangers

As Jiang Man advanced, Old Yellow Ox continued advising him about cultivation and the consequences of his growing fame. He warned that displaying talent in the Great Dao would attract people who wanted either to kill him or exploit him, and urged him to investigate the events of more than three hundred years earlier 529 555.

Jiang Man’s increasingly dangerous acquisitions also alarmed him. He recognized Zhulong’s presence in a Dragon Egg, warned that harm to the dragon could destroy Jiang Man through their connection, and recoiled when shown the sealed Seven Extremes Plague 522 523 554 555.

Before the planned confrontation with eight Heavenly Immortals, Old Yellow Ox was assigned to plow fields, prompting suspicion that something major was happening at the sect. Afterward, he conceded a bet to Yu Wanyi and privately acknowledged that remaining at Yao Guang Peak could have left him unable to escape 577 584.

Appearance

  • Ox form: A yellow ox with a tail he idly flicks while grazing 221 389.
  • Physique: Returns from imprisonment with a glossy coat and robust body; later described as brawny 221 284.
  • Expressive mannerisms: Frequently raises his brows, gives pointed looks, or lowers his head to graze instead of answering 35 227.
  • Injuries: Meng Qiewei’s attack leaves cracks across his body and brings it close to shattering 201.

Personality

Old Yellow Ox is outwardly docile, restrained, and dryly humorous. He often answers Jiang Man’s boasting with silence or continued grazing, but can deliver sharp replies when pressed. After Jiang Man claimed to have a substantial chance against a True Immortal, the ox clarified that the opponent could defeat him seven times within three breaths 2 72 529.

His attachment to Jiang Man is practical rather than demonstrative. He leaves concealed safeguards on him, assesses threats, and advises caution without promising to solve every danger. His confidence in Jiang Man grows from early disbelief into genuine recognition of his talent and fortune 15 62 200 555.

He is also intensely conscious of the Immortal Gate’s power. Even when badly injured, he avoids retaliation that would expose him. His restraint does not imply complete knowledge: he admits when he lacks information and repeatedly directs questions about exceptional figures or ancient events to better-informed sources 145 201 486 568.

Abilities & Skills

Cultivation instruction

Old Yellow Ox explains cultivation methods, advancement requirements, and the balance between cultivation, physical strength, and spiritual development 105 176 286.

  • Teaches Jiang Man the Heavenly Heart Seal and the simplified Origin Condensation Method 94 105.
  • Gives explanations Jiang Man finds faster and easier to understand than Yan Yiqiu’s 105.
  • Provides the cultivation plan used to achieve Power Integration at the peak of the Foundation Establishment Body 176.
  • Explains Primordial Spirit solidification, Innate Spiritual Qi, divine abilities, and the Ascension realm 286 407.
  • Cannot substitute instruction for actual combat experience; tells Jiang Man that practical fighting skill requires fighting other people 39.
  • Does not know every low-level technique: he had never encountered the Nine Clouds Town-Dragon Seal because he considered its level too low 61.

Perception and identification

He can recognize concealed techniques, unusual auras, and powerful supernatural entities 193 362 523.

  • Detects a Demon Race technique disguised as a Human Race method on Jiang Man 193.
  • Recognizes Junior Sister Huo’s connection to an Evil God 150.
  • Identifies the Water God behind the Sun-Moon Immortal Journey’s representative and explains his former authority over the Heavenly River, Weak Water, and Four Seas 362.

  • Identifies the Seven Extremes Plague when Jiang Man shows it to him 554 555.

Concealment and protective measures

Old Yellow Ox secretly places contingencies on Jiang Man that are difficult to detect and would not readily be identified as Evil God methods 200.

  • Offers to leave protective power on Jiang Man for a journey where its use would not attract the sect’s attention 145.
  • Evades a probe by an extremely powerful investigator 224.
  • Avoids openly using his strength within the sect because exposure could force him and Jiang Man to flee 201.
  • Warns that, although he can escape danger himself, he cannot necessarily take anyone with him 71.

Survival and recovery

Old Yellow Ox claims that many beings can defeat him, but very few can kill him. Meng Qiewei nevertheless demonstrates that she can severely damage his present body 201.

  • His body begins to stabilize after her attack, but full recovery requires considerable time 201.
  • Meng Qiewei suggests that repeatedly crushing him could force century-long periods of dormancy 201.
  • His survival is not absolute: he privately recognizes that intervention by an Immortal Gate expert could kill him 201.
  • His special abilities are not fully recovered during Jiang Man’s early cultivation 39.

Marriage-arranging methods

Old Yellow Ox uses supernatural methods to arrange Jiang Man’s encounter and marriage with Meng Qiewei 1 2.

  • Knows when and where the temporary stream, immortal lake, and fallen robes will appear 1.
  • Says his available power was only sufficient to arrange one marriage 2.
  • His methods leave traces that Meng Qiewei can follow back to him 18.
  • Repeatedly offers to find Jiang Man another wife once he recovers; Jiang Man declines 28 39 45.

  • Giant Sword Technique — Given to him for study so that he could potentially perform Sword Flight and become a giant sword capable of carrying people; the passage does not confirm mastery 144.

Relationships

  • Jiang Man — Lifelong companion who regards him as his only childhood family. Their relationship combines concealed protection, cultivation guidance, and constant teasing 200 217 555.
  • Meng Qiewei / Ji Meng — The wife he finds for Jiang Man. She punishes him for his interference and probes his intentions toward her husband; afterward, he remains wary of her 201 227.
  • Qing Dai — Attempts to recruit him into exchanging information about Jiang Man and her young lady. He accepts her tea leaves and agrees to trade their private comments 228.
  • Zhao Tiankuo — Demon Lord who mistakenly believes he enlightened the ox and recruited him as an informant. Old Yellow Ox keeps Jiang Man informed of the arrangement 224 250.
  • Heavenly Dog — Household companion who calls him “Brother Ox.” Old Yellow Ox occasionally answers his questions and introduces him to spirit herbs as food 299.
  • Ren Qian — Supplies his fodder during imprisonment, withholds investigative information, and later explains the conditions of his restricted release 207 221.
  • Ting Fengyin — A figure whose power he deeply respects. Old Yellow Ox says he knows of him but has never met him, and avoids speaking his name directly 193.
  • Yu Wanyi — Wins a bet against him concerning the danger surrounding the later battle; he concedes that staying at Yao Guang Peak could have been disastrous 584.

Notable Quotes

“Before Jiang Man was born, the Peerless Heaven’s Chosen Destiny was the Peerless Heaven’s Chosen Destiny. After he was born, the Peerless Heaven’s Chosen Destiny had to prove that it was the Peerless Heaven’s Chosen Destiny.” 201

“You weren’t like this before you came of age, either.” 555

Trivia

  • Jiang Man’s changing forms of address—from “Senior” to “Brother Ox” to “Old Huang”—prompt Old Yellow Ox to reflect on human fickleness. Jiang Man readily returns to “Senior” when seeking protection 35 73.
  • His actual age, original identity, and allegiance during the events more than three hundred years earlier remain undisclosed. He avoids Jiang Man’s questions about whether he belongs to the Ancestral Dragon’s era 425 555.
