For this trip, Patrick brought the entire Dawn's Edge Burning Legion and some Warlocks along. Drills alone were not enough to understand a unit's actual combat capability; that depended more on real combat.
The other Bloodsworn Guards stayed in Silvermoon City to continue studying the Naaru's Holy Light and work with the Archmage troops on ways to cleanse the contaminated land. The plague within the Dead Scar was extremely persistent, and removing it through gentle methods was quite difficult.
There were simple methods, of course. Patrick could scour the ground with a fire version of Arcane Mass Point, just as he had purified all of Deatholme, letting lava flow over the contaminated areas. But Silvermoon City was not Deatholme. After Patrick's fire version of Arcane Mass Point swept through, the plague would be gone, but Silvermoon City would also be utterly destroyed.
The proper approach was to find a method that neither harmed the land nor affected the civilians' survival. Archmage Rommath had already devised one: use Arcane energy to activate Metamagic, then slowly strip the plague from the soil with Disintegration Energy. Patrick had rejected it, however. Silvermoon City was short on energy now. Where would they find so much spare Arcane energy for Rommath to strip away the plague?
Because the energy from the Discs of Norgannon was incompatible with Silvermoon City's facilities, far too little of the energy they released could be used. Patrick's Discs of Norgannon alone were nowhere near enough to restore Quel'Thalas to its heyday. Kael'thas had gone to Outland precisely to solve this problem.
