Definition
- A true floating city supports an urban population, rather than merely carrying troops or providing combat platforms. Patrick distinguishes Sunlight City and the Violet Citadel from the Scourge’s much smaller airborne strongholds on this basis 540.
- Floating buildings and mage towers already exist in Quel'Thalas, but levitating an entire city requires exceptionally valuable technology and highly stable magic circles 93 844.
- The distinction is consequential: failure of a tower’s levitation system threatens one structure, while failure beneath a floating city could destroy an entire urban population 844.
Technology
Levitation Principles
Ellen identifies three broad approaches to levitating towers and cities 7.
| Method | Principle | Advantages and Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Spatial deconstruction and reconstruction | Alters the space supporting the structure. | Demands exceptional skill and spatial stability; nearby spells and spatial disturbances can compromise it 7 118. |
| Gravitational modification | Changes the gravitational constant affecting the structure. | Considered the most viable approach, with relatively simple levitation conditions; safety generally depends on the core propulsion system remaining intact 7. |
| Force against gravity | Applies upward force to counter the structure’s weight. | Requires enormous amounts of energy and is highly uneconomical 7. |
Levitation Magic Circles
- The levitation system studied by Patrick modifies Azeroth’s gravitational influence and combines it with spatial stabilization, energy barriers, arcane diversion, and mana channeling 119.
- Activation requires thirty-nine independent magic circles to trigger simultaneously and combine their effects. Inscription and coordination are the principal technical difficulties 119.
- Core construction materials include arcanite, mithril, and thorium. Supporting supplies include arcane crystals, amberstone, sapphires, cat’s-eye stones, arcane dust, planar essence, and glimmering shards 119.
- Patrick tells Anasterian that Sunlight City uses enlarged versions of the Mages’ Association’s recorded levitation circles with auxiliary magic rings. He conceals the crucial arcane-sequence combination within the Discs of Norgannon 129.
Foundation and Energy Systems
- Sunlight City’s spell network connects through a conduction device to the Energy Power Center on Sunfury Spire’s third underground level, then spreads through the foundation on the fourth underground level 123.
- Spatial Restraint, Turn Mud to Stone, Energy Restraint, and Steel Surface reinforce the airborne landmass. The levitation effect applies only to the foundation, so inhabitants and loose objects retain ordinary weight 123.
- Sunlight City’s buildings and other creations draw on its internal arcane-energy system, unlike Silvermoon City’s much older, separately established Arcane Network 204.
- Ulduar’s later design uses eight triangular pyramid-shaped arcane sequences to form a cubic Spatial Arcane Sequence, with a Disc of Norgannon embedded as its energy supply 679.
Defenses and Habitability
- Sunlight City’s Arcane Shield restricts unauthorized aerial entry and protects residents from high-altitude winds and cold. A Constant Temperature Field maintains comfortable conditions throughout the city 124 135.
- Its central Sunfury Spire, perimeter mage towers, and connecting walls form a coordinated defensive network. The towers serve as research facilities and spell-amplifying artillery positions 229 353.
- Teleportation circles provide civilian access, emergency evacuation, troop withdrawal, and supply delivery. Flying mounts can use a managed arrival area on a subsidiary entrance island 135 142 147.
- Altitude greatly reduces exposure to ground armies, but does not eliminate aerial and magical threats. During the Horde invasion, Patrick remains particularly concerned about warlocks, red dragons, and priests of the gods 142 148.
Documented Floating Cities
| City | Origin and Control | Distinguishing Features |
|---|---|---|
| Sunlight City | Created by Patrick Cabrolon from the Sun Temple and surrounding land; governed by Patrick and his decision-making council 124 174. | Quel'Thalas’s first floating city; designed for permanent habitation and large-scale refuge, approximately half Silvermoon City’s size 125 197. |
| Violet Citadel | Dalaran’s floating city, developed after the Kirin Tor acquired magical knowledge from Karazhan 647. | Uses ley-line energy as its power source; rises under Ansirem Runeweaver in year 24 after the Dark Portal 310 566. |
| Ulduar | Patrick’s second floating city, built from the Titan complex in the Storm Peaks 650 680. | Incorporates the Constructs Creator Engine and houses Titan Guardians; developed as an Arcane Pact military base 650 680 729. |
| Teo'korin | Karazhan raised by Medivh with Med’an’s assistance 844. | Its levitation system includes safeguards allowing Med’an to control the city 844. |
Related Airborne Structures
| Structure | Relationship to Floating Cities |
|---|---|
| Scourge Skybreakers | Commonly called floating cities, but classified by Patrick as airborne warships because they lack sufficient scale and civilian facilities. Even Naxxramas falls short of a true city 540. |
| Malykriss | The Scourge’s airborne-warship manufacturing center. Alonsus Faol later completes an unfinished Skybreaker there and converts the entire factory into the Evil Citadel, retaining the name Malykriss 595 810. |
| Throne of the Four Winds | The air elementals’ royal city in Skywall; its white-stone structures are supported by permanent Anti-Gravity Magic 739. |
| Floating mage towers | Smaller airborne structures demonstrate related principles, but do not meet the scale of a floating city 118 524 844. |
- Scourge warships use levitation cores, necromantic magic circles, and soul-controlling runes personally manufactured by the Lich King. Death Knights construct their interiors and exteriors 595.
- Patrick suspects that Naxxramas draws on living beings’ soul energy, but explicitly treats this as an unconfirmed explanation rather than established knowledge 310.
History
Sunlight City’s Creation
Patrick planned an airborne settlement encompassing the Sun Temple, nearby farms, and part of Sunscar Peak. Its projected area matched Silvermoon City’s eastern district, providing room for the surrounding population rather than merely lifting a tower or fortress 123.
To launch it, Patrick used Arcane Energy Ascension to sever the land’s underground connections and activated the Levitation Magic Circles. The enormous energy demand pushed him to his limits before the completed Arcane Ring Combination raised the city intact. The achievement also accompanied his breakthrough to the ninth tier 124 126.
His purpose was to preserve elven lives, supplies, and military strength through the coming wars. Initial construction therefore prioritized energy, propulsion, defenses, teleportation circles, and access islands while leaving much of the interior undeveloped 141 158 168.
Settlement and the Horde Invasion
During the Orc and Troll offensive, Sunlight City became a refuge for nearby elves. Municipal staff operated teleportation circles at full capacity while Yanida inspected its energy supply and barrier, and Candiris distributed military, medical, and spellcasting supplies 142.
When Horde-controlled red dragons appeared, Patrick withdrew his troops through teleportation circles rather than risk fighting in the open. The city’s perceived safety subsequently attracted migrants from across the Ghostlands 147 168.
Over several years, construction added homes, schools, Holy Light churches, and barracks. The former Sun Temple site below became farmland and sentry posts, while civilian commerce remained centered in the airborne settlement 181.
The Fall of Quel'Thalas
As the plague spread, Patrick recalled elven travelers and ordered residents beneath the city to shelter inside. His forces later escaped encirclement by Arthas through teleportation linked to the Discs of Norgannon 188 194.
Patrick moved Sunlight City toward Silvermoon ahead of schedule and opened its teleportation circles to surviving defenders and civilians on Quel'Danas. The influx multiplied its population, vindicating decades of stockpiling and construction. Patrick also offered its energy supply as a possible means of easing the survivors’ magical dependence 195 197.
Afterward, the city stationed itself above the Dead Scar outside Silvermoon. New migrants had to accept that it might depart Eversong Woods and surrender their Silvermoon property to the Council 209.
Expeditionary Use
Sunlight City developed into a mobile strategic base, transporting forces and supporting operations in the Ghostlands and at Quel'Danas. During the Northern Expedition, it followed the fleet north and supplied materials for new ports 211 494 524 526.
Patrick subsequently raised Ulduar and joined it to the Constructs Creator Engine. Iron Giants and Iron Dwarves undertook the connecting construction, while Patrick waited for the new city’s energy circulation to stabilize 680.
Ulduar’s planned additions included mage towers, dragon platforms, and defenses prepared by the Magisters’ Legion. It later accompanied the fleet to Pandaria, carrying Quel'Thalas’s main force and appearing over the continent as an enormous airborne fortress 729 794 796 799.
Sunlight City’s Administration and Urban Life
Government
- Patrick Cabrolon serves as the city’s lord, supported by a decision-making council rather than administering it solely through his family 184 186.
- Alleria Windrunner acts in Patrick’s place during research and diplomatic absences, despite nominally holding no council position 174.
- Quelrintis oversees municipal affairs and City Hall; Patterson handles family business, some city administration, and personnel assignments 142 221 524.
- Administrative policy emphasizes division of labor, cooperation, shared management, accountability, and a ban on political donations 174.
- Officials undergo selection examinations. Middle-ranking and senior officials also face performance reviews followed by an election; Patrick explicitly rejects bloodline and noble title as grounds for appointment 174 519.
Property and Planning
- Patrick initially finances infrastructure himself and retains property rights under the city’s council, keeping core assets under local control 184.
- His reform proposal separates publicly administered land-use rights from permanent building ownership, with renewal of land-use rights subject to review 186 187.
- Districts are organized by function—residential, military, and commercial—rather than separating mages from rangers 166.
- Markets, exchanges, and theaters operate alongside continuing construction. Even much later, most residents remain concentrated near Sunfury Spire and the western and southern roads, leaving substantial northern and eastern terrain undeveloped 169 486.
