Patrick's Quel'Thalas version of the imperial examination system would probably displease some of the elves from the old Council faction. But there was nothing they could do about their displeasure. Patrick held the reins of power in Quel'Thalas, was himself a mage at the pinnacle of the Immortal rank, and had countless elves under his command. Even if they wanted to oppose him, they would have to weigh their own strength first.
Patrick had his own ideas about domestic affairs. A leadership group that truly worked for the people and the kingdom could not be brought down, so he was not afraid of those high-ranking nobles stepping forward to oppose him.
In fact, quite a few among the leadership opposed Patrick's compulsory education policy. They were nobles or high-ranking nobles themselves. The more the common people learned, the more their position would be threatened. How could they possibly want to see that happen? They simply did not dare oppose Patrick's decision.
But Patrick knew perfectly well that without compulsory education, Quel'Thalas's education system would return to its previous state, with four pay-to-win paths to choose from (see Chapter 560 for details).
How could commoners compete with nobles, or ordinary elves with capitalists? How many ordinary elves could afford advanced private tutors? How many could outdo nobles in the arts? In public speaking, careers, or bearing, how could ordinary elves compare with the children of the leadership?
Through these reforms to official appointments and the education system, Patrick was changing the paths of upward mobility throughout Quel'Thalas society.
