Twenty-finger incarnation 73 74 Kenjaku’s new Culling Game rules extract his fingers from Itadori and gather the remaining fingers, resurrecting him independently with four arms and two faces.
One-handed Malevolent Shrine 82 Makes a binding vow restricting his domain to ninety-nine seconds, allowing one-handed activation without reducing its attack power.

Appearance

  • While possessing Itadori: Appears as a young man with short pink hair. While suppressed, he can manifest a mouth on Itadori’s cheek or the back of his hand 60 63.
  • Independent incarnation: Has a heavily muscled body, four arms, four eyes, two faces sharing one head, and a large mouth on his abdomen 73.
  • Presence: His released aura is described as an utterly evil, pitch-black sun that terrifies the sorcerers inside Shibuya Station 58.

Personality

Sukuna lives entirely by his own desires: eating when hungry, killing whatever displeases him, and pursuing whatever interests him. He dismisses the need for others to understand him and regards a world not ruled by strength as boring 63 82.

His arrogance does not prevent careful observation. He identifies the obvious targeting behind Lu You’s first Shinsō attack, recognizes Higuruma’s exceptional talent, and becomes visibly interested when Lu You’s simplified Bankai moves too quickly for him to follow 62 81.

Itadori’s persistence provokes an unusually personal hatred in him. As their final battle progresses, Sukuna wants not merely to kill his former vessel but to deny everything he represents. Even after defeat, he refuses Itadori’s offer of coexistence and calmly chooses death 82 83.

Abilities & Skills

Malevolent Shrine — Innate Cursed Technique

The novel identifies Malevolent Shrine as Sukuna’s innate technique, with specialized applications including Lataib, Cleave, Furnace, and Domain Expansion 6.

  • Lataib: Produces invisible slashes that can form a dense net, pulverizing structures and overwhelming Itadori’s weaker version of the same attack 73 74.
  • Cleave: Sukuna prepares to use it against Itadori at close range before Choso intervenes 74.
  • Defensive slashes: Layers numerous slashes between himself and Itadori’s fist, although they fail to stop the incoming Black Flash 74.
  • Speed and reach: A soundless slash cuts Lu You across the chest while also splitting buildings on either side of him 62.

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

Sukuna deploys an open domain centered on an eerie shrine, spreading destructive, sure-hit slashes across hundreds of meters 80 82.

  • External barrier attacks: Its open structure allows it to strike a closed domain’s vulnerable exterior, breaking Gojo’s first Unlimited Void 80.
  • Independent shrine: The shrine remains stationary while Sukuna moves and attacks, giving Gojo an opportunity to retreat from its center 80.
  • Adjustable range: Sukuna shrinks his domain to increase its power during a clash with Gojo’s compressed Unlimited Void 81.
  • Binding-vow activation: Exchanges a fixed ninety-nine-second duration for one-handed deployment at undiminished attack power 82.
  • Limits: Gojo destroys the shrine with sufficiently powerful attacks. An altered Unlimited Void shell also forces Sukuna to break the barrier himself rather than rely on his usual exterior assault 81 82.

Reverse Cursed Technique

  • Regenerates severed arms, damaged teeth, fractured limbs, and other major injuries 62 75 80.
  • Uses Reverse Cursed Technique to restore his burned-out cursed technique, recovering quickly enough to astonish Choso 80 81.
  • Must prioritize between physical healing and technique restoration during closely timed domain exchanges 81 82.
  • His healing becomes less efficient after Itadori’s repeated Black Flashes affect his soul 83.

Domain Amplification

  • Coats his hands in a thin domain layer that neutralizes an opposing cursed technique on contact, allowing him to strike Gojo through Limitless 75.
  • Cannot use his slashing technique while maintaining Domain Amplification, restricting his options against Gojo 80 81.

Hollow Wicker Basket

  • Neutralizes Unlimited Void’s sure-hit effect while Sukuna maintains its hand seal 82.
  • His four arms let him sustain the seal with two hands while fighting with the other pair 82.
  • Releasing it before establishing his own domain would expose his brain to Unlimited Void’s information overload 82.

Physical Prowess and Resistance

  • Four-armed combat: Can attack, defend, and form hand seals simultaneously. His extra arms give him a slight close-combat advantage over Gojo, although Gojo’s Six Eyes and Limitless compensate for it 80 82.
  • Speed: Evades Jogo’s attacks with his hands in his pockets and later reaches Choso before the opposing group can react 60 74.
  • Durability: Choso’s Piercing Blood inflicts only a superficial wound during the battle with Gojo 81.
  • Poison resistance: Withstands the poisonous cursed-spirit components in Choso’s blood 74.
  • Black Flash: Is stated to be capable of using it, but cannot deliberately guarantee its occurrence 81.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shibuya Incident

Sukuna manifests after Gojo is sealed, spreading his presence throughout Shibuya. He dominates Jogo in their ensuing battle, evading his flames and repeatedly battering him through the district as Jogo escalates to Maximum Technique: Meteor 58 60.

Once freed, Gojo confronts Sukuna. Lu You intervenes to prevent a domain clash from devastating the remaining civilians. Sukuna dodges Shinsō and wounds Lu You, but Lu You’s simplified Kamishini no Yari severs both of Sukuna’s arms before he can complete another domain activation 62.

Gojo exploits the opening with a 0.2-second Unlimited Void, stunning Sukuna and allowing Itadori to regain control. Sukuna remains inside his vessel afterward and threatens revenge against Lu You 63.

Forced Resurrection in the Culling Game

Kenjaku adds rules requiring disembodied consciousnesses to become players and bodiless players to incarnate. The resulting chains forcibly extract fifteen fingers from Itadori, seize Gojo’s hidden finger, and take the fingers carried by Uraume. Sukuna emerges independently in Tokyo No. 1 Colony with twenty fingers 73.

Itadori and Higuruma pursue him, and Choso joins their fight. Their coordination allows Itadori to land three Black Flashes, but Sukuna overwhelms them and severely injures Choso. Gojo arrives before Sukuna can finish attacking Itadori and Higuruma 74 75.

Battle Against Gojo and Itadori

Sukuna fights Gojo in his four-armed form, using Domain Amplification to bypass Limitless. Unlike his counterpart in the original storyline, this incarnation has neither the Ten Shadows Technique nor Kamutoke 75.

Their repeated domain clashes turn on barrier construction, range, and technique-recovery speed. Malevolent Shrine initially breaks Unlimited Void, but Gojo adapts by compressing his barrier. Higuruma, Choso, and Itadori intervene between clashes, disrupting Sukuna’s recovery and creating openings 80 81.

Trapped inside another Unlimited Void, Sukuna maintains Hollow Wicker Basket and makes a binding vow to open Malevolent Shrine one-handed. He breaks Gojo’s reinforced domain at substantial cost, emerging with a hole through his chest before Gojo and Itadori resume their joint assault 82.

Death

Itadori’s sustained Black Flashes force Sukuna to vomit up fingers, while Gojo’s Hollow Purple severs three arms and devastates his body. Sukuna initially swallows the expelled fingers again, trying to preserve his remaining chance of survival 83.

Itadori offers to take him back into his body and live alongside him without cursing others. Sukuna refuses. As the assault continues, his body breaks apart, his expelled fingers burn away, and his soul disappears. He rejects coexistence and walks toward death without hesitation 83.

Relationships

  • Yuji Itadori — Former vessel and eventual killer. Itadori suppresses his consciousness, inherits his cursed technique, and ultimately offers him coexistence despite their enmity 63 73 83.
  • Satoru Gojo — Rival for the title of strongest. Gojo stops his Shibuya rampage and later fights his complete incarnation alongside Itadori 62 63 75 83.
  • Lu You — Enemy who helps free Gojo and interrupts Sukuna’s Shibuya domain activation by severing both arms. Sukuna responds with interest in his abilities and a later death threat 62 63.
  • Kenjaku — Orchestrates the Culling Game rules responsible for Sukuna’s independent resurrection 73.
  • Uraume — Associate who brings three of Sukuna’s fingers into the Culling Game; the rules seize them for his incarnation 73.
  • Jogo — Badly outmatched opponent during Shibuya. Sukuna abandons their confrontation when Gojo arrives, allowing Jogo to flee 60 62.
  • Hiromi Higuruma — Opponent whose domain finds Sukuna guilty and grants the Executioner’s Sword. Sukuna incapacitates him before he can use it 81.
  • Choso — Opponent who protects Itadori with poisoned blood and movement-restricting attacks. Sukuna severely injures him with a kick 74 75.

Notable Quotes

“A world where strength doesn't reign supreme is utterly boring.” 63

“Even I'm impressed that you've come this far. But are you looking down on me, Yuji Itadori? I am... a curse!” 83

Trivia

  • The future Itadori used as Lu You’s template develops Sukuna’s technique over hundreds of years. The narration states that Sukuna himself might not surpass that Itadori’s mastery, while Itadori exceeds him in cursed-energy reserves, strength, and soul domain 6.
