Background / History

Meeting Lu You and Reforming Kusagakure

Abu was a native Grass ninja who deeply resented Kusagakure’s corruption and decline. Unable to change the village alone, he buried his frustration in repeated training. Years of missions and fighting also left him with hidden injuries that would become debilitating later in life 208 260.

He met three-year-old Lu You on a snowy night while practicing with his sword. Believing the thin, ragged child to be a war orphan, Abu adopted him, only to discover that Lu You could teach him swordsmanship and taijutsu. Under Lu You’s guidance, Abu grew stronger, gathered like-minded companions, and launched a revolution in Kusagakure 208.

Abu subsequently served as both Grass Shadow and daimyō, making him the formal head of the village and country. Privately, however, he called Lu You “Boss,” regarding him as the source of his direction and courage 208.

Confrontation with Amegakure

While Lu You lived in Konoha, Abu reported on Kusagakure’s training, production, and agriculture. His warning that Hanzō was gathering troops along the border prompted Lu You’s preparations to return 206.

Facing an enemy force much larger than Kusagakure’s roughly four hundred ninja, Abu feared another destruction of the village. He volunteered to confront Hanzō himself, but Lu You initially instructed him to protect Kusagakure against opportunistic attacks, particularly from Iwagakure 208.

To establish Lu You’s authority before the jōnin, Abu arranged a public spar. Lu You defeated his fire ninjutsu and swordsmanship, dispelling doubts about entrusting troops to a ten-year-old. Abu then rallied the village’s fighters and announced that Lu You would command three hundred combat personnel in a rapid strike against Hanzō 209 210 211.

Building the Land of Grass

Abu initially questioned Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan’s request for relief grain, pointing out Amegakure’s earlier attempt to destroy Kusagakure. He referred their appeal to Lu You and later helped settle the refugees and Akatsuki members who relocated to the Land of Grass 222 226.

As Lu You developed the thirteen-division organization, he chose Abu as his First Division deputy rather than a captain, explaining that the new military needed younger, more energetic leaders. Abu remained an active fighter, accompanying Lu You during the response to Iwagakure’s incursion and charging at the front during its rout 223 233 235.

Following the annexation of the Land of Rain, Abu moved the administration into the former daimyō residence and oversaw governmental reorganization. Lu You directed him to establish a Council of Elders and a Cabinet that included division captains. Yahiko assisted with the mounting workload 236 241.

Diplomacy and Institutional Development

Abu handled negotiations over tactical cooperation with Konoha, including the division of spoils and command authority. He rejected the assumption that an equal split was necessarily fair, arguing that Konoha could not obtain its proposed share without Grass intervention 250.

After the war, he negotiated reparations and border provisions with the great nations while maintaining Kusagakure’s refusal to return captured jinchūriki. Lu You trusted his experience enough to leave these details entirely to him 259.

His domestic responsibilities included reporting on academy enrollment, agricultural expansion, and military staffing. He also taught administration to Itachi and proposed renaming the growing Kusagakure the City of Divine Descent, honoring Lu You’s arrival as the turning point in the country’s fortunes 246 259 261.

When the Five Great Nations later demanded the return of defectors and jinchūriki, Abu refused to yield. He offered Naruto the right to decide whether to stay or leave upon reaching adulthood, while leaving the other cases to the Grass God 284.

Declining Health and Death

At fifty-one, Abu explained that accumulated injuries from a lifetime of ninja service were weakening his vitality. He declined Lu You’s offer to extend his life, expressing confidence that Kusagakure’s peaceful future would endure 260.

His condition eventually became grave, and Yahiko took over domestic affairs. During a hospital visit, Abu thanked Lu You for the life they had shared and wished him success, admitting that he sometimes felt Lu You did not belong to their world 290 321.

Abu died peacefully as the sky darkened during Lu You’s battle with Kaguya. His final recollection was of the ragged child approaching him on a snowy night thirty years earlier 323.

Lu You chose not to resurrect him, knowing that Abu would reject the dead interfering with the living. A simple funeral followed his wishes, the country observed three days off, and Yahiko succeeded him as daimyō a month later 325 326.

Appearance

  • Build and face: Rugged, burly, and weathered, with an imposing bearing 208 248.
  • Scar: An old diagonal scar runs from his forehead to his chin 208.
  • Hands: Thick calluses reflect years of swordsmanship and taijutsu practice 208.
  • Clothing: Wears Kusagakure’s dark-green robe during the prewar gathering; later appears in the division leadership’s black-and-white, gold-trimmed haori 210 248.
  • Later years: His hair begins turning silver while he continues working in his administrative office 283.

Personality

Abu’s strongest attachment is to his homeland and its people. His frustration with the old Kusagakure drove him toward reform, while the possibility of renewed destruction caused sleeplessness and nightmares. Despite that fear, he was willing to face Hanzō personally and publicly insisted that the village would never surrender 208 211.

Age made him cautious and practical. He was content with a prosperous Land of Grass and initially struggled to imagine Lu You’s ambition of worldwide unification. Nevertheless, he accepted the need to build institutions that could survive without their founder 219 223 284.

His reverence for Lu You coexisted with considerable familiarity. He complained about his “hands-off” leadership, teased him about his mischievous behavior, and remained the only person still willing to address him by name later in the story. He could also be openly playful, proudly celebrating his choice of the city’s new name 241 246 261 284.
