History
Recruitment of Lu Ren
Lu Ren chose the Sun Moon Empire for its cultivation resources and its academy’s desire to defeat Shrek. Knowing the empire lacked powerful Soul Masters, he deliberately demonstrated his strength at the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy’s gates to attract its leadership’s attention 1 6 7.
He offered Jing Hongchen a tournament championship in exchange for a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Bone. Jing Hongchen viewed defeating Shrek as valuable not only to the academy, but also to the empire’s ambition of dominating the continent 7 9.
Escalation with Shrek
Xuan Zi’s confrontation with Lu Ren devastated part of Mingdu. Arriving imperial Soul Engineers demanded an explanation and punishment, treating the destruction in their capital as an affront to national sovereignty. Some soldiers openly called for war against Shrek 88.
At the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament, Lu Ren led the Sun Moon academy to victory. He conceded the two-two-three matches, forced a deciding team battle, and killed all seven remaining Shrek competitors alone. The championship ended the academy’s runner-up position and shattered Shrek’s reputation for invincibility 115 124 132.
Xu Tianran’s Reign
After the old emperor died naturally, Xu Tianran ascended the throne with the support of senior officials and the Imperial Family’s Offering Hall. He consolidated military and political authority and began bringing Mingdu’s independent factions into line 143.
Xu Tianran relied on the Holy Spirit Cult for high-level combat power while remaining wary of its influence. Lu Ren’s Soul Spirit System offered a separate means of strengthening the empire, leading Xu Tianran to fund the Spirit Pagoda and authorize its establishment 88 163 164.
The partnership soon became a source of imperial anxiety. Xu Tianran feared that the Spirit Pagoda had grown beyond his control. After Lu Ren killed Zhongli Wu and Feng Ling, Kong Deming advised the emperor to avoid confrontation and accumulate strength; he could not guarantee victory against Lu Ren 185 194.
Submission to Lu Ren
Following Shrek Academy’s destruction, Lu Ren confronted the imperial court. Kong Deming acknowledged the empire’s wrongdoing in tolerating Holy Spirit Cult incursions and attempting to use others against Lu Ren. He offered compensation and, ultimately, the empire’s submission to the Spirit Pagoda 223 230 231.
Lu Ren killed Xu Tianran but refused the throne himself. Instead, he selected Xu Mochén, a direct-line imperial descendant whom the court understood would be easy to control. Kong Deming and the assembled officials accepted the appointment 231 232.
Lu Ren allowed the unification war to continue, appointed Ju Zi marshal, and required the empire to minimize civilian suffering and improve conditions in occupied territories. He also ordered the promotion of his deeds and legends and assigned Kong Deming to supervise the new emperor 232.
Continental Conquest
Under Ju Zi, the empire captured the Heaven Dou capital and subsequently conquered Dou Ling. Coordinated Soul Cannon formations overwhelmed traditional Soul Master armies, while Soul Spirits supplied by the Spirit Pagoda strengthened imperial forces 242.
The empire then slowed its advance against Star Luo to consolidate its acquisitions. Administrative integration, reconstruction, surrendered troops, resource development, and expanding Spirit Pagoda branches took priority over an immediate final offensive 243.
Huo Yuhao repeatedly disrupted imperial operations, defeated high-ranking officers, and rendered detection Soul Tools ineffective against him. Nevertheless, sustained offensives and Kong Deming’s rise to Level 99 eventually reduced Star Luo to its capital 245 247 250.
Lu Ren killed Huo Yuhao before the final surrender. Ju Zi demanded Dai Hao’s handover and executed him; Xu Jiawei then died by suicide. Star Luo’s fall completed the Sun Moon Empire’s unification of the Douluo Continent 250.
Planned Transition to the Douluo Federation
After the war, Lu Ren ordered the gradual abolition of the imperial system, describing it as an obstacle to development in a unified continent. Ju Zi was placed in charge of a transition intended to take place within a hundred years, with Nana assisting and the nation ultimately to be renamed the Douluo Federation 252.
Ju Zi ordered an initial implementation plan within three days and warned that obstruction would be punished under military law. The provided account establishes the reform directive, not its completion 252.

Imperial Family and Nobility
- Inherited Martial Souls: The imperial family’s two major hereditary Martial Souls are the Sun and the Purple Brilliant Heaven Destroying Dragon 231.
- Noble distinction: Dark skin is identified as a sign of nobility within the empire 6 162.
- Concentration of resources: Lu Ren criticizes the empire’s aristocratic structure for placing national resources in noble hands and sheltering Evil Soul Masters through elite connections 240.
Military and Technology
Soul Engineer Legions
- Massed firepower: Imperial legions use overlapping Soul Tool volleys rather than relying solely on individual Soul Master duels 164 242.
- Linked Soul Tools: Linking devices combine the Soul Power of hundreds of personnel, allowing collective attacks capable of threatening Titled Douluos 197.
- Combined emplacements: Groups of low-ranking Soul Engineers can cooperate to confront multiple higher-ranking Soul Masters 242.
- Elite formation: The Imperial Dragon Soul Engineer Corps belongs to the Hand of National Protection. Its commander, Prince Xu Tianyuan, is a Level 93 Soul Master and Level 9 Soul Engineer 232.
Soul Spirit Integration
- Independent operation: Contracted Soul Spirits can activate Soul Tools without occupying their Soul Master’s hands or attention 159 164.
- Coordinated roles: A Soul Spirit can provide defense and counterattacks while its partner maintains ranged fire 164.
- Technology exchange: Under Lu Ren’s settlement, the empire supplies Soul Tool technology while the Spirit Pagoda helps train Soul Masters 232.
Research and Civilian Technology
- Illustrious Virtue Hall: Maintains the continent’s most advanced Soul Tool technology alongside extensive industrial and management resources 165.
- Spiritual-system research: The empire investigates combining Spiritual System Soul Masters with Soul Tools 31.
- Urban infrastructure: Mingdu uses Soul Tool streetlights and advanced construction methods, with buildings dozens of meters tall 42.
- Civilian heating: Soul Tool heaters become part of the empire’s effort to improve living standards and reduce hostility in conquered territories 239.
Limitations
- Early shortage of supreme experts: Despite national and technological superiority, the empire initially has fewer top-tier Soul Masters than the original three nations 6 88.
- Close-range vulnerability: Soul Engineers can be forced onto the defensive when an enemy closes the distance; the Soul Spirit partnership is presented as a way to address this weakness 28 164.
- Detection can be bypassed: Lu Ren’s Limitless defeats Dragon City’s physical surveillance, while Huo Yuhao’s Spiritual Power neutralizes imperial detection Soul Tools 239 245.
- Insufficient deterrence against Lu Ren: Kong Deming admits uncertainty about defeating him after witnessing the destruction of the Holy Spirit Cult’s leaders 194.
Territories and Occupation Policy
| Location | Imperial Control |
|---|---|
| Mingdu / Sun Moon City | Capital and technological center; a prosperous city without walls 42. |
| Dragon City | Occupied and covered by High-Altitude Soul Tool Detectors. Local testimony describes disciplined garrisons, paid purchases, night patrols, and notices prohibiting arbitrary killing or plunder 239. |
| Spirit City, formerly Shrek City | Nominally under imperial administration but autonomously controlled by the Spirit Pagoda. The empire supplies reconstruction materials, skilled workers, and one hundred thousand military personnel 242. |
| Former Heaven Dou and Dou Ling territories | Annexed and subjected to administrative integration, reconstruction, and resource development 242 243. |
| Former Star Luo territory | Fully conquered after Star Luo City’s surrender, completing continental unification 247 250. |
Ju Zi’s occupation policy combines strict discipline with material improvements. She prohibits massacres, civilian harassment, and mistreatment of surrendering populations. A Soul Engineer who attempts to abduct a civilian woman is publicly executed on her orders 243.
