Background & History

Brilliant Cave and Sableye Mother

Before meeting Ye Yinchuan, Sableye lived in Brilliant Cave under the protection of its mother. Its mother searched for the best gems for it while consuming inferior ore herself, taught it how to find food and use illusions, and repeatedly shielded it from danger. 501

When Team Shadow imprisoned Sableye Mother in a Laser Cage, Sableye began trapping intruders in illusions to stop them from leaving the cave. It initially mistook Ye Yinchuan's group for allies of its mother's captors, but was primarily trying to secure help for her rescue. 288 289

Ye Yinchuan pacified Sableye by offering raw gems, demonstrating hostility toward Team Shadow, and promising to help its mother. Sableye then guided the group through its illusionary maze to the Laser Cage. 288 289

Joining Ye Yinchuan

After Sableye Mother was freed, the two Sableye showed gratitude by offering Ye Yinchuan a large pink disc diamond. The younger Sableye voluntarily entered Ye's Poké Ball, becoming part of his team, while its mother remained in Brilliant Cave. 290 291

Sableye adapted quickly to life with Ye Yinchuan, though it worried about being sent away and hoped that its mother could eventually live with them. Ye later returned to Brilliant Cave and reunited the mother and child. 326 439

Jewel Kingdom Mission

Exploring deeper into Brilliant Cave, Sableye and its mother discovered a sealed Mega Sableye revered as an ancestor. The ancient Mega Sableye revealed that the Sableye clan had long maintained the seal around the corrupted Jewel Kingdom and awaited the birth of a new Diancie. 445 446

Sableye accepted the responsibility of helping save the Jewel Kingdom. Doing so would free its clan from having to sustain the seal and allow it to remain with its mother without either being forced to replace the ancient guardian. 446 448 468

Appearance

In its ordinary form, Sableye is a small, hunched Dark/Ghost-type Pokémon with gem-like eyes, a dim red gem in its chest, sharp teeth, and long antenna-like ears. Its body markings differ according to the types and quantities of gems it has consumed. 288 289

  • Its gemstone eyes are structurally similar to real gems and are central to its gaze-based techniques. 288 291
  • Its chest gem becomes the foundation of its Mega-Evolved armor and shield. 501
  • It can retract its long ears into its head before merging with shadows through Shadow Sneak. 294
  • Its Bond-Evolved Mega form is taller and more proportioned, clad in crystalline armor and carrying a red gem shield plus a gem weapon described as a sword, spear, or lance. 501 503 530

Personality

Sableye is greedy for gems and initially enjoys frightening others, but its behavior is fundamentally childlike rather than malicious. It obeys its mother's teachings, fears hostile humans, and was willing to use its illusions against strangers solely because it wanted to rescue her. 288 501

It is affectionate toward Ye Yinchuan and becomes eager to please after joining his team. Its attachment to both Ye and Sableye Mother drives much of its growth, particularly its determination to protect them and fulfill the Sableye clan's duty. 326 468 503

Sableye is fiercely protective. It reacts aggressively toward threats to its mother, Ye Yinchuan, or valuable resources entrusted to him, even when it must be corrected about the true identity of an enemy. 440

Abilities & Skills

Keen Eye

Sableye's original Ability is Keen Eye, which improves its dynamic vision and observation while reducing environmental interference with its sight. 291

  • Strengthens eye-based moves such as Leer, Mean Look, Confuse Ray, and Psybeam. 291
  • Allows it to retain effective vision in darkness, smoke, and similar obstructive environments. 291
  • Supports both scouting and combat awareness. 291

Illusions and Fear Manipulation

Sableye can weaponize its gemstone eyes to trap targets in illusions built from their deepest fears. It used Mean Look and Confuse Ray to overwhelm A Kai with a traumatic memory during their first encounter. 288

  • Its strongest illusion effects appear to combine Mean Look, Confuse Ray, and Psybeam. 291
  • Can hide areas or alter a group's perception of its surroundings with large-scale illusionary traps. 288
  • Can emerge from shadows behind targets before forcing eye contact and triggering fear-based hallucinations. 312
  • Can dispel its own illusions after incapacitating opponents. 342
  • Cannot initially choose the exact illusion shown; it draws upon what the target fears most. Those without major psychological scars may resist it more easily. 342

Shadow Sneak

Sableye uses Shadow Sneak for stealth, ambushes, and short-range movement through darkness. 294

  • Temporarily turns ghostly and merges into its own shadow before reappearing from another shadow. 294
  • Used this mobility to ambush enemies from behind and force them to meet its gaze. 312
  • Can conceal itself in darkness, though its shadow-travel is more limited than Gengar's and must be activated through Shadow Sneak. 294

Diancie's Blessing and Diamond Gaze

Diancie bestows a blessing upon Sableye in recognition of the Sableye clan's sacrifices for the Jewel Kingdom. The blessing increases its total strength, expands its Fairy-type potential, and lets it learn additional Fairy-type moves. 451

  • Diamond Gaze — Fires energy through Sableye's eyes and compresses carbon in the air into diamonds that restrain or imprison targets. 451
  • The resulting diamonds can bind a target's limbs and prevent movement. 454
  • Sableye can refract Diamond Gaze through Diancie's diamonds, creating difficult-to-predict attack paths and spreading its control effect across the battlefield. 454

Diamond Storm Combination Move

Sableye's Diamond Gaze can merge with Diancie's Diamond Storm into a coordinated Combination Move. 454

  • Diamond Storm creates a large field of diamonds that function as warped mirrors for Sableye's gaze attack. 454
  • The combination increases damage, expands battlefield control, and makes the attack's trajectories harder to defend against. 454
  • Diancie provides the primary energy, while Sableye's power harmonizes with it due to their species connection and Diancie's blessing. 454

Bond Transformation

Following its Bond Evolution, Sableye gains Bond Transformation, an Ability rooted in its connection with Ye Yinchuan. 502

  • Enables it to break through normal life limits and complete its unusual evolution. 502
  • Temporarily improves all attributes when it and Ye Yinchuan defeat an opponent together. 502
  • Retains part of those battle-earned improvements permanently after combat. 502
  • Functions specifically through its Mega-Evolved state and its bond with Ye. 502

Gem Knight

Gem Knight is Sableye's exclusive Mega-Evolution Ability, born from its desire to protect what it values. It combines defensive reflection, illusionary control, beam attacks, and protective support. 503

  • Its gem shield reflects certain damage and negative effects in a manner comparable to Magic Mirror. 503
  • Its gem weapon can emit a magical light that traps enemies in illusions of what they cherish most, causing distraction or complete loss of fighting ability. 503
  • Can fire beam moves through both its eyes and weapon at once, either combining identical attacks or using separate techniques simultaneously. 503
  • Extends protective power to Sableye, Ye Yinchuan, and chosen allies; enemy energy attacks within its light can be restricted. 503

Relationships

  • Ye Yinchuan — Trainer and trusted protector. Ye gained Sableye's trust by feeding it gems, rescuing its mother, and surviving its Mega Evolution trial inside its mental world. 288 290 501
  • Sableye Mother — Mother and Sableye's earliest guardian. Their separation and reunion are central to Sableye's motivations, and Sableye wants the Jewel Kingdom restored so they can remain together freely. 289 439 468
  • Diancie — Benefactor and royal ally of the Sableye clan. Diancie blesses Sableye and later trains alongside it through their Diamond StormDiamond Gaze Combination Move. 451 454
  • Ancient Mega Sableye — A sealed clan ancestor revered by Sableye and its mother. Its condition reveals the clan's long-standing duty to contain the corrupted Jewel Kingdom. 445 446
  • Team Shadow — Hostile organization responsible for imprisoning Sableye Mother in Brilliant Cave. 289

Trivia

  • Urban legends call Sableye a “Dementor” or “Soul Snatcher,” but Ye Yinchuan states that its supposed habit of eating human souls is misinformation; gems are its preferred food. 287 288
  • Gems are its favorite diet, but ordinary mineral ores can substitute when gemstones are unavailable. 289 291
  • Carbink is a natural prey species for Sableye because the gems on Carbink's body are a desirable food source. 289
  • Sableye's body markings can change according to the amount and type of gems it has consumed. 289
