Background / History

Childhood and service

Ding Dan grew up without any family he could remember. His childhood was divided between school, construction sites, and shelters, and he joined the Prison Wardens initially to make a living. He later became a Sacrificial One and underwent extensive, systematic combat training 337 396 646.

Lu Xiao’s blood caused his demonic transformation. Doctor classified Ding Dan’s mutation as the “pure” kind, contrasting it with Adam’s contaminated mutation 147 384.

Early Dark Prison expeditions

Lu Xiao accompanied Ding Dan into the Dark Prison to escort him and pursue food along the way. Ding Dan evolved by eating its creatures, eventually developing wings, and sought unusual Contained Anomalies that might assist Doctor’s plan 95 117.

During these travels, Ding Dan experimented with the Bone Spur and the daggers Positivity and Confusion. After Lu Xiao pushed Positivity into his heart, the resulting strength increase led the two to exchange punches for more than an hour. He later accompanied Lu Xiao, Chainsaw Man, and Prison Doctor to the island where Niclade summoned Cthulhu 96 127 173.

Crown and near-fatal sacrifice

Finding Lu Xiao and the others unconscious amid hostile anomalies, Ding Dan used P306-Cage despite knowing its fatal side effect. The drug briefly raised his Mental Power and protected him against contamination 312.

The Green Mailbox then delivered a letter from Feis, who appeared and knelt before him. Feis subsequently brought the Crown that initiated Ding Dan’s Deification Ritual. After the immediate crisis ended, Ding Dan collapsed from the drug’s effects; Nini saved him through her Life Trait 312 313 324 425.

Kunlun and his ancestry

At Kunlun Taoist Temple, Ding Dan noticed signs of habitation and helped reason out that its inhabitants retained human habits. Despite recognizing the danger, he was badly injured by the Little Daoist Boy, who destroyed his spine and began turning him into a puppet with Clockwork 342 343 344 345 346.

Dan Qingrong later identified herself as his grandmother and said that her son was Ding Dan’s father. Ding Dan accepted that he was her descendant but questioned whether Zhang Chu was truly his grandfather, pointing out gaps in her account and the unexplained modification of her body 348 349.

Rise in Hell

Public hostility toward his demonic appearance drove Ding Dan into an emotional breakdown. During the ensuing crisis, Hell Creatures gathered under his command and the crowd was slaughtered. Ding Dan subsequently ordered his forces to retreat rather than attack the soldiers confronting them 354 355 357.

He entered Hell through the Green Mailbox’s Gate but arrived in a wasteland rather than the expected Post Office. Despite being a deity, he struggled with the heat and dehydration. He learned local survival methods before reaching Morati’s settlement, where his single horn and Crown caused its inhabitants to recognize him as their prophesied Savior 379 383 384.

Morati admitted that Ding Dan’s imperial lineage was false and that the “prophecy” was a transaction. Nevertheless, Ding Dan established a cross-world teleportation connection and prepared Morati City as a rear base. Morati renamed it the Holy City, abolished slavery there, and provided water rations, building Ding Dan’s reputation as a liberator 384 396.

King and Tyrant

Ding Dan’s growing mastery of King’s Authority drew his thoughts toward its former owner. Aware that he might go mad or become that being, he deliberately pursued the path of a Tyrant to understand the Chess Players 546 680.

His campaigns swept through northern Hell, and the Royal City surrendered without resistance. His reign also involved mass killing, including cooperation in a trap intended to surround and kill one hundred million lives 737 1088.

Ding Dan later made a deal with Daimon, offering his Authority and assistance toward Daimon’s advancement to an Old One. After Kaitlin occupied the Holy City and defeated him, Ding Dan retreated, recovered, and accepted Lu Xiao’s help. He subsequently explained that losing political power had not freed him while the Crown remained 841 845 865.

Correction and later operations

After consuming the Old One flesh and blood, Ding Dan ascended as a god wielding Correction. He used it first to remove the Tyrant’s influence from his remaining followers. They still chose to follow him, even after he declared that he was no longer Hell’s King or the prophesied Savior 1015.

He later returned to the Dark Prison to investigate two identical Fourth Group Armies. Rather than erase both, he arranged for them to establish their identities while he tested their claims with Correction. His subsequent confrontation with Angel ended in a stalemate between their Authorities 1068 1070 1088.

Under Bai Suoyi’s arrangements, Ding Dan infiltrated the outsiders’ gladiatorial circle with Yao Ling, supported by a false identity established through Gambler’s Lies. He also helped devise a plan against Cthulhu: eliminate assimilated hosts in the Dark Prison, identify those in the Present World, and isolate the remaining Anchor Points before attempting a decisive kill 1137 1158.

Confronting Correction’s original owner

Preparing to advance to an Old One, Ding Dan secretly arranged for Gambler to merge consciousness with him. During the assimilation struggle, he confronted Correction’s original owner with his suspicion that beings from another universe were connected to the madness accompanying advancement 1310 1311.

The confrontation drew higher beings into his consciousness space, and Ding Dan lost consciousness when it was cut open. In the later discussion, Fantasy told him that Death had removed the parasites and eggs infesting him 1312 1315.

Fantasy also described Ding Dan’s earlier role as both Hell’s initial Savior and a catalyst for the final war. According to this explanation, his campaigns cleared out forces aligned with Outsiders and preserved Demon Clan survivors needed for Daimon’s plans. Correction itself was revealed to be an important “key,” which Ding Dan was instructed to keep hidden 1314 1315.

Appearance

Ding Dan has a heavily muscled demonic body with dark red scales, a bald head, and enormous wings. His revealed deity form stands five meters tall 90 334 568.

  • Single forehead horn: Thick, inscribed with cryptic incantations, and originally one of three horns. He sawed off the other two following the Omniscient Mirror’s advice; the chainsaw’s Trait prevented them from regrowing 384 568.
  • Black leathery wings: Developed after consuming a tentacle and provide flight 117 568.
  • Tail: Strong enough to smash a large crater into the ground 367.
  • Crown: A conspicuous symbol of his former royal Authority, later described as a Flesh Crown 384 858.
  • Positivity-enhanced body: Muscles swell dramatically, skin brightens toward blood-red, and even his wings and horn enlarge 632 646.

Personality

Ding Dan is observant, analytical, and cautious about unfamiliar rules. His experience as a Sacrificial One makes him sensitive to his surroundings, and he often notices behavioral inconsistencies before committing to action. At Kunlun, he reasoned from swept floors, incense, and the Little Daoist Boy’s behavior rather than accepting appearances at face value 342 343 344 345.

He shares Lu Xiao’s taste for teasing and dangerous experimentation, but initially has stronger reservations about self-injury. He hesitates to stab his own heart and finds the Bone Spur painful enough to stop testing it. Later, he casually uses Positivity to strengthen his arm before delivering a card-game punishment 96 127 865.

His attachment to humanity survives both rejection and his own demonic transformation. Watching humans defend Moscow District moves him to tears, and he refuses to resolve the duplicated-army incident by erasing both forces because they are humanity’s soldiers 447 1070.

The Tyrant Authority magnifies his ruthlessness and alters his thinking, but Ding Dan remains aware of that process. By his later struggle with Correction’s owner, he has abandoned the wish to become human again and insists that he is taking the Authority by force rather than inheriting it 546 680 1310.

Abilities & Skills

Correction

An Authority acquired through Old One flesh and blood. It changes phenomena toward the condition its wielder believes they ought to have, rather than enforcing an objective definition of normality 1015.

  • Removed the Tyrant’s influence from his followers 1015.
  • Tested statements and apparent falsehoods during the duplicated-army investigation 1070.
  • Can potentially erase targets by altering his own perception, though he rejects that solution when human troops are involved 1070.
  • Greater discrepancies require more Divinity. Internally invalid reasoning causes backlash that “corrects” the user instead 1015.
  • Failed to extinguish Angel’s Holy Light or sever her Faith Power 1088.
  • Carries the danger of assimilation by its original owner. Fantasy later identifies it as a concealed key with a future purpose 1015 1315.

King’s Authority / Tyrant

His former royal Authority compelled submission and exerted particularly strong suppression over Hell Creatures 366 367 568.

  • Forced seven Deities and Ruiqi to kneel 568.
  • Interrupted Lu Xiao’s attack, though its practical effect against him was limited to brief pauses 645 648.
  • With Lu Xiao’s enhancements, briefly forced the Green-Skinned Gods to one knee during Daimon’s battle 866.
  • Could not command all of Hell simultaneously because there were too many lives to control 568.
  • Progressively imposed the former owner’s mentality on Ding Dan 546 1015.
  • Was relinquished as part of his dealings with Daimon 865 871.

Demonic Physiology

His mutated body combines considerable durability with flight and, after attaining deity rank, deliberate anatomical modification 96 383 568.

  • Ordinary bullets cannot penetrate his skin; an ordinary sniper rifle could wound but not kill him. Divine Blood Warheads remain a serious threat 96 354.
  • Can create internal structures, including a waterskin-like organ near his heart for conserving moisture 383.
  • Can survive without a heart at deity rank 647.
  • Flies much faster than an airplane by his later appearances 1068.
  • Acquired fluency in Hell’s language upon attaining Godhood 384.

Combat Training

Ding Dan’s technique comes from extensive Sacrificial One training rather than improvised fighting 646.

  • Uses precise punches, evasive movement, aerial charges, and dagger attacks 632 645.
  • Held off dozens of Deities while combining Positivity’s enhancement with Confusion’s mental disruption 632.
  • Demonstrated better technique than Lu Xiao in their duel, although his enhanced physical attributes ultimately remained inferior in their unrestricted confrontation 645 648.

Faith Power

Ding Dan retains believers independently of the Tyrant’s compulsion. His statue in the Holy City stores Faith Power generated through their prayers 1015 1087.

  • Stored faith can temporarily amplify his Divinity 1087.
  • The accumulated power is consumed when used rather than providing a permanent increase 1087.

Summoning and Cross-World Travel

Ding Dan uses Hell’s postal system and teleportation circles to move between worlds and mobilize Hell Creatures 366 390 396.

  • Ordered Feis to gather creatures at the Post Office for future summons 366.
  • His blood has an irresistible allure to powerful Hell Creatures and can serve as bargaining material 366.
  • His cross-world teleportation circle requires regular applications of his blood 396.
  • Morati taught him how to inscribe circles but later admitted he did not know how to activate them himself; Ding Dan was the one who made the circle work 1015.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Positivity — Short dagger that enhances the wounded area; piercing the heart produces a full-body strength increase. It also cancels the negative dagger’s effects. By his later god-level appearances, it has become almost useless to him 127 334 646 1142.
  • Confusion / Negativity — Mental-disruption dagger. The longer dagger is called Negativity in one explanation; elsewhere, Confusion magnifies worries and negative emotions or briefly incapacitates enemies 128 334 632.
  • Crown / Flesh Crown — Former symbol and instrument of his royal Authority, acknowledged by Hell’s will 313 366 858.
  • P124-Green Mailbox — Delivers letters from Hell and provides access to its Gate and postal network 312 366 390.
  • P306-Cage — Artificial drug used in his rescue attempt. Unlocks bodily potential for ten minutes, greatly increases Mental Power, and grants temporary contamination immunity at the stated cost of the user’s life 312.
  • Old One flesh and blood — Consumed gradually with Chef’s help to acquire Correction; contained residual consciousness capable of reviving through him 874 1015.
  • Throne — Ceremonial transport carried by eight Deities or Great Demons during his rule 737 825.

Relationships

  • Lu Xiao — Close friend, traveling companion, sparring partner, and source of the blood responsible for his mutation. Their relationship combines mutual aid, teasing, and increasingly dangerous fights 117 337 384 645 646 919.
  • Doctor — Assessed his early strength. Ding Dan considers him attentive despite his stern manner and reveals that lower-ranking Sacrificial Ones call him the “stone-faced nanny” 95 117.
  • Nini — Saved him from the fatal consequences of P306-Cage through her Life Trait 324 425.
  • Feis — Self-proclaimed loyal lackey who brought his Crown, organized Hell Creatures for summoning, and commanded his ground forces 313 366 447.
  • Morati — Royal-clan deity, political organizer, and longtime attendant. Remains beside Ding Dan after he relinquishes kingship, identifying himself as a Chosen One of Death 384 396 1015.
  • Yi Hao — Strategist and political collaborator. They maintain a private communication channel through divided bodies of the parasitic deity Mitchell 546 589 635.
  • Dan Qingrong — Grandmother, according to her account. Ding Dan accepts their descent relationship but distrusts omissions in her explanation 348 349.
  • Zhang Chu — Possible grandfather. Ding Dan explicitly questions whether being Dan Qingrong’s descendant also makes him Zhang Chu’s descendant 349.
  • Daimon — Political partner who received his royal Authority in a deal aimed at helping Daimon become an Old One. Ding Dan regards him as a genuine sovereign of Hell 865 871.
  • Gambler — Card-playing companion and covert collaborator. Supports his infiltration with Lies and secretly shares his consciousness during the Old One Ascension attempt 863 1137 1311.
  • Angel / Nono — Opponent whose occupation of a demon city and earlier clash with Lu Xiao provoke Ding Dan’s hostility. He eventually recognizes her as the Pope’s granddaughter 1086 1088.
  • Fantasy — Explains Ding Dan’s concealed role in Hell’s larger conflict and instructs him to hide Correction’s significance 1315.
