Background / History
Shadow belonged to the original Prison Warden Squad alongside Bai Suoyi and Zhang Chu. Lu Xiao remembers him as his former teacher, but Shadow initially remembers only five squad members rather than the six Lu Xiao describes. The Omniscient Mirror explains that all traces of Lu Xiao’s existence had been erased from everyone’s memories 211 314.
According to the Creator, Shadow was not originally outstanding within the squad. A remark from Bai Xuedong drove him to keep forcing himself to grow, while his Human Heart Trait helped him resist complete madness 440.
He Shang became his student in the previous world, having been born near the end of the Calamity Era. Shadow later brought He Shang and others into the new world. He also brought Liu Ni, Dante, and Dan Guofeng from Mount Kunlun before the Spark Plan, and personally cared for the child later adopted as Nini 224 692.
Shadow created successive Doctors using a prototype designed by Doctor Li. Each received a Thought Imprint of devotion to humanity, intended to prevent their exceptional intelligence and capabilities from becoming a threat to humanity 297.
Appearance
- Human appearance: Appears as the middle-aged member of the pair when he and the younger Lu Xiao infiltrate the Highest Office 214.
- Clothing: Wears a coat that he uses as a bribe during his encounter with Shuns; later wears leather clothing that bursts as his body swells under contamination 236 439.
- Heart-Nurturing Ground form: Appears as a mass of rotting flesh capable of producing his recognizable head. This reflects his altered consciousness rather than an ordinary human body 306 307.
- Restored presentation: Can reshape his terrifying form into a normal human appearance within the Heart-Nurturing Ground 308.
Personality
Shadow is a patient, results-oriented strategist. His years undercover among the Saints strengthened his mental resilience, and he is willing to use unconventional or morally compromising methods when he believes the outcome benefits humanity. Human nature is central to his planning: he anticipates fear, temptation, loyalty, and self-interest rather than treating them as incidental variables 248 282 697.
His composure conceals severe exhaustion. Repeated ability use consumes his humanity, yet he continues working because of Prison’s fall and the disasters threatening the Present World. He envies the simpler divisions of the Calamity Era, when those around him were either comrades or enemies rather than people whose competing schemes he had to navigate 280 414.
Despite treating people as pieces in larger plans, Shadow retains personal tenderness. He accepts the amnesiac, decomposing Lu Xiao as a friend without hesitation, helps him reconnect with others, and supports Nini’s attempt to revive Little Black because he still wants to preserve beauty 262 308 323.
Abilities & Skills
Instigation
Instigation makes an intended action or outcome become “reasonable” once Shadow establishes the necessary influence over its target 218 226.
- Activation methods: Bribery, coercion, temptation, and psychological suggestion. Bribery is the fastest method, but its required price varies with the intended result 226 257.
- Acceptance condition: A target must accept his influence. If bribery is refused and his other methods fail, the ability cannot compel them 257.
- Contact-based bribery: Shuns touching Shadow’s thrown coat is enough to establish the Instigation Rule 236.
- Psychological preparation: He Shang describes Shadow’s approach as threatening a target to weaken their defenses, then offering benefits to shake their convictions 248.
| Application | Demonstrated effect |
|---|---|
| Making an abnormal procedure reasonable | Allows Lu Xiao’s method of replacing his heart to function under Instigation 218. |
| Crisis intervention | After Lu Xiao accepts a severed finger, his otherwise ineffective piloting stabilizes a falling aircraft, including an inexplicable burst of power from a failed engine 226. |
| Calming madness | Restores a measure of clarity to Shuns and later removes Bai Suoyi’s fear before putting him to sleep 236 237 280. |
| Tracking | Gives Chainsaw Man the ability to sense Lu Xiao’s exact location 250. |
| Extracting information | Uses Instigation to make Shuns tell the truth 298. |
| Influencing testimony | Makes Adams admit his membership in the Warden Supreme Office 360. |
Self-Instigation
Shadow can bribe and hypnotize himself, allowing him to produce effects without first influencing another person 233 257.
- Opens a passage between the Present World and the Dark Prison by bribing and instigating himself 233.
- Uses his own heart as an exceptionally valuable bribe when preparing to unlock all his abilities against Zhang Chu’s threat 268.
- Remains bound by the rules of Instigation even when targeting himself 257.
Divine Body and Support
- Enhanced sight: As a False God, possesses eyesight more than one hundred times better than a human’s 226.
- Regeneration: Regrows severed limbs and organs, although his recovery is slower than Lu Xiao’s 270 323 403.
- Body-part offerings: Uses severed fingers, an arm, an eyeball, and his heart as bribes or sources of support. These enable tracking, temporary divine empowerment, and underwater travel without attracting marine creatures 250 280 323 382.
- Concealment: Makes himself and Lu Xiao difficult to perceive during their infiltration, though this effect fails under ability suppression 214 217.
- Mental communication: Speaks directly into Lu Xiao’s mind in the Heart-Nurturing Ground 306.
Strategy and Investigation
- Infiltration: Maintains identities among the Pioneers, Prison Wardens, Saints, military, and researchers 282 365.
- Counterintelligence: Recognizes a false Warden partly because the impostor calls Lu Xiao “292,” a researcher’s form of address rather than the combat personnel’s “S292” 407 409.
- Indirect deduction: Reconstructs Yi Hao’s attempted extraction and deliberate capture from the guards’ deaths and Yi Hao’s behavior 413 414.
- Public exposure: Arranges a worldwide live broadcast of his confrontation with Adams and the Highest Office 360.
Limits and Costs
- Humanity depletion: Excessive ability use consumes fragments of his humanity; exhausting them leads to madness 280.
- Ability nullification: The Eye of Truth suppresses Instigation. Shadow can force his abilities to operate at deity-level strength, but doing so would violate his wager with Gambler 215 218.
- Fatal wager: Bai Suoyi warns that disregarding the wager to unleash divine power would kill him 250.
- Temporary treatment: Sedatives suppress his madness only briefly, with resistance making continued treatment unsustainable 297.
- Heart-Nurturing Ground: Venting destructive impulses in simulated scenes provides only short periods of clarity. His consciousness is less vulnerable outside his body, but the underlying madness remains 307.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Omniscient Mirror — Consulted about Lu Xiao’s condition, lost history, and the causes of madness; Shadow also temporarily controls Lu Xiao’s access to it 225 246 281.
- System’s true body — A pitch-black, washbasin-sized object containing Doctor Li’s complete brain. Shadow retrieves it from the Highest Office and later installs it in C04’s servers 225 437.
- Protagonist and the Eye of Truth — Chen Fei’s heart and Doctor Li’s eye, which Shadow personally removed and later urged Lu Xiao to use. He subsequently learns that both organs originally came from Lu Xiao 217 309.
- Cage drug — Takes Liuguang’s issued syringe and injects Nini with it during her attempt to revive Little Black 323.
- Cigarettes — Used for smoking, establishing rapport, bribery, and passing concealed information; a message on a cigarette pack becomes part of his arrangement involving Ding Dan 365 413 414 432.
- Officer’s identification — Bears military identification number 0130906 409.
Relationships

- He Shang — Student from the previous world. Shadow seeks help for his madness, distinguishes his original student from the altered life-form called Present, and retains He Shang’s unconditional support 211 224 248 432.
- Bai Suoyi — Longstanding comrade, addressed as “Old Bai.” They pursue Lu Xiao together and later manage their own madness in the Heart-Nurturing Ground 250 280 307.
- Bai Xuedong / Chief Bai — A formative influence whose remark pushed Shadow to grow. Shadow later tells Zhang Chu that Chief Bai died while humanity completed the Spark Plan 352 440.
- Doctor Li — Designer of the Doctors’ prototype and an important figure in Shadow’s account of humanity’s survival 297 309.
- Doctor — Shadow’s creation. Helps suppress his madness, devises the Heart-Nurturing Ground method, and advises him about Creation Authority 297 307 473.
- Shuns — Researcher whose sanity Shadow helps restore. Shuns later warns him not to fuse with Creation Authority 236 237 473.
- Warden — Close associate who knows his plans, supports the Spark Plan preparations, and works with him against the false Warden 365 414 437.
- Gambler — Fellow Pioneer whose assistance lets Shadow bypass his ritual, but whose wager restricts his power. The Creator’s revelation of Gambler’s identity leaves Shadow convinced he has been manipulated 233 440 463.
- Zhang Chu — Former teammate whose fragmented memories make him both a source of crucial information and a difficult investigative partner 272 314.
- Lucilla — Saint whom Shadow manipulates while arranging the completion of the Sin Trait. She becomes deeply distrustful after suffering the consequences of his earlier advice 228 329 330.
- Nini / Liu Ni — Child he brought from Mount Kunlun and personally cared for. He later grants her temporary divine power to help revive Little Black 323 692.
- Liuguang, Nini’s protector — A separate individual whom Shadow considers a useful pawn. Doctor and Warden later suspect Shadow’s arrangements shaped events involving him and Liu Ni 326 697.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Highest Office Infiltration
Shadow approaches Lu Xiao because He Shang has gone mad after injecting Lu Xiao’s blood. Their meeting exposes the discrepancy between Lu Xiao’s memories of the Prison Warden Squad and everyone else’s recollections 211.
He takes Lu Xiao into the Highest Office, recovers Protagonist and the Eye of Truth, and reveals their connection to Chen Fei and Doctor Li. After Lu Xi finishes backing up her data, Shadow retrieves the system’s true body and leaves with it 217 221 225.
Lu Xiao’s Madness and the Dark Prison
After a dreamscape leaves Lu Xiao maddened, Shadow consults the Omniscient Mirror and learns that what the others experienced as a dream was actual history for Lu Xiao. He and Bai Suoyi attempt to retrieve him, but Dart intervenes before they can complete the capture 246 250 251.
Shadow subsequently accompanies the amnesiac Lu Xiao into the Depths. He later admits that he wanted answers himself, that the Mirror had told him not to interfere with Lu Xiao, and that he had accepted the possibility of never returning 262 298.
The journey exposes the Creator’s manipulation and worsens Shadow’s own condition. Doctor’s treatment and the Heart-Nurturing Ground preserve temporary lucidity, while Shadow and Bai Suoyi help Lu Xiao rebuild his understanding of his friends and past 282 297 307 308.
Military Command and the Mist Impostor
As Ninth Group Army commander, Shadow prepares coastal defenses and investigates the mist with Lu Xiao and the Warden. On returning, he faces accusations of betrayal and identity tests from the Deputy Commander 365 382 407.
Rather than immediately attacking the counterfeit Warden, Shadow forces everyone into the same requirement to prove their identities. He recognizes the impostor’s researcher background, coordinates with the real Warden, and ultimately identifies the infiltrator as Artisan 409 410 414 416 417.
Faction War Scheme
Shadow’s stated Deification Ritual requires him to instigate a grand war. His expanded plan involves completing the Sin Trait, establishing another faction through its holder, and provoking conflict among several major powers 231 432.
- Paradise Lost — Ding Dan’s faction.
- Great Brahma — He Shang’s faction.
- Eden — Antie’s faction.
- The Saints — Represented in the scheme by Sin.
- An unidentified Dark Prison faction 432.
Gambler’s refusal to surrender Lust delays the Sin Traits’ fusion. Shadow initially interprets this as obstruction of his war plan; the Creator’s later revelations make him reconsider Gambler’s motives more broadly 432 440.
Spark Plan and the Creator
Shadow prepares the Spark Plan’s next implementation, relocates the system’s main body to C04, and approaches the Polluted Creator. He intends to consume the deity and use Creation Authority to secure another path for humanity, but refuses the Warden’s suggestion that he personally lead the evacuation because he cannot bear to repeat that pain 437 440.
During a supernatural ascent, flowers, vines, and living flesh struggle over his body. He continues despite exhaustion, recalling that he has never retreated. The stairway eventually becomes a sunlit road lined with figures from his life, including Bai Xuedong, Doctor Li, and Chen Fei 449.
In a later account of his preparations, Shadow explains that he wants to use Creation Authority to bring about a powerful god capable of breaking the deadlock. Doctor warns that the Authority would not make him a god outside the world he creates and advises leaving it in the new world if it is used for the Spark Plan 472 473.
Death, Reappearance, and Later Legacy
The Warden later states that Shadow died for Lu Xiao’s Deification Ritual. Much later, after the Director briefly impersonates Shadow, he reveals Liu Guang standing in the doorway holding a locksmith’s business card. Lu Xiao initially believes the sight is a hallucination 692 1210.
Shadow’s earlier interventions continue to surface in later revelations. Gambler recounts that Shadow moved the Ghost-Faced Moth Empress’s egg from Magic City to a distant town 962.
An intelligence organization named Shadow subsequently appears in the Woll Galaxy. Its intelligence helps the Chaos Faction capture a Sea Demon Race World God. Lu Xiao’s response indicates an expected connection, but the supplied account does not establish the character’s precise position within the organization 1446.
