Geography and Climate

  • Size and settlement: The North is vast, but the need to survive long winters has restricted its population growth 45 75.
  • Climate: Northerners are accustomed to cold, dry conditions. Households must accumulate substantial food and supplies before winter 75 154.
  • Southern contact: People south of the Neck traditionally know little about northern affairs, lacking both reliable information channels and interest 45.

Notable Locations

Location Significance
Winterfell Ancestral seat of House Stark; its construction is attributed to Bran the Builder 34.
Wolfswood Part of Winterfell’s directly administered lands. Almost as large as the Kingswood and Rainwood combined, it helps make the Starks’ direct holdings the largest of any ducal house 159.
White Harbor Coastal city in the southeast, built by House Manderly at the mouth of the White Knife 33.
White Knife River whose defense prompted the Starks to grant House Manderly lands and accept its service 33.
The Neck Strategically important territory inhabited by Crannogmen, including House Reed of Greywater Watch 52 231.
Karhold Seat of House Karstark northeast of Winterfell. Its extensive domain includes resource-rich forests beside the Last River and lands south of Seal Bay on the Shivering Sea 154.
Last Hearth Seat of House Umber; the only northern house whose domain lies farther north than Karhold 154.
The Wall A structure roughly one hundred leagues long separating the lands beyond it; traditionally credited to Bran the Builder 34.

Government and Noble Houses

House Stark rules through northern bannermen, including powerful territorial houses and mountain and swamp communities sworn to Winterfell. Eddard leaves Benjen Stark as acting lord of Winterfell when he marches south during the uprising 52 108.

House Seat or Territory Position in the North
Stark Winterfell Former Kings in the North and the region’s ruling dynasty 33 43.
Bolton Dreadfort Former Red Kings and ancient rivals of the Starks; subsequently one of Winterfell’s strongest vassal houses 154 231.
Karstark Karhold A cadet branch of House Stark, descended from Karlon Stark; ranks alongside the Boltons among Winterfell’s foremost vassals, excluding the later-arriving Manderlys 154.
Manderly White Harbor Exiles from the Reach whose control of the North’s only city made them its wealthiest house 33.
Dustin Barrowton and the Barrowlands Northern bannermen associated with a comparatively strong culture of knighthood 52 61 231.
Reed Greywater Watch, the Neck Crannogman house led by Howland Reed 52 231.
Umber Last Hearth Holds the northernmost domain identified in comparison with Karhold 154.

People and Culture

Heritage and Communities

  • First Men ancestry: The region is populated mainly by descendants of the First Men 45.
  • Mountain and swamp peoples: Numerous tribal communities owe allegiance to Winterfell 52.
  • Crannogmen: Inhabitants of the Neck are called “Frog-eaters” and “Mudmen” by outsiders; Crannogmen are also described as “Wildlings within the Wall” 52.
  • Northern roses: Despite the region’s bitter cold, roses grow in the North 43.

Religion and Knighthood

  • Limited Faith of the Seven: Few northerners outside White Harbor worship the Seven, so relatively few soldiers are formally anointed knights 159.
  • Regional exceptions: Barrowton has a stronger knightly culture. Brandon Stark became a knight after spending time there as a ward of House Dustin 61.
  • Manderly tradition: House Manderly swore allegiance to the King in the North beneath the Wolf’s Den heart tree in the name of both the Old and New Gods 33.

Economy

  • White Harbor’s wealth: The city developed from a settlement financed with the Manderlys’ surviving wealth into one of the richest places in the North 33 191.
  • Uneven noble fortunes: Most northern nobles are poor compared with the Manderlys; the rewards from Titus Peake’s southern campaign represent a substantial windfall for them 187.
  • Forest resources: House Karstark controls extensive, resource-rich woodland around the Last River 154.
  • Winter provisioning: Maintaining sufficient food reserves is essential to northern survival and limits population growth 75.

History

The Winter Kings and Red Kings

Northern tradition identifies Bran the Builder as the progenitor of House Stark and credits him with building Winterfell and the Wall. Some legends make him a son or descendant of Garth Greenhand, although Titus doubts that all the Builder’s attributed works could belong to one person 34.

The ancient North was divided among competing powers while ironborn raiders preyed on its coasts. The Stark Winter Kings and Bolton Red Kings became the principal rivals in the struggle to unify it. Bolton kings defeated and flayed several Stark kings, displaying their skins at the Dreadfort 231.

Their competition extended beyond warfare against each other. The Red Kings defended the White Knife against pirates, while the Starks incorporated the Neck through marriage to the Swamp King’s daughter. One Stark also won Bear Island in a wrestling match 231.

King Harlon Stark eventually besieged the Dreadfort for two years. Starved into surrender, Rogar Bolton, “the Hunter,” lowered the Red King’s banner and pledged to abandon the flaying of enemies. The Boltons became the last northern house to submit to Winterfell. Karlon Stark’s service in the conflict earned him the lands on which he founded Karlon’s Keep, later Karhold 231.

The Three Sisters and White Harbor

Around two thousand years before the tavern account in King’s Landing, the independent Three Sisters exploited Stark weakness to seize the Greystarks’ Wolf’s Den as a foothold in the North. House Stark later retaliated by devastating the islands in the campaign remembered as the “Rape of the Three Sisters” 242.

About nine hundred years before Titus recounts their history, the exiled ancestors of House Manderly received a southeastern fief from House Stark. The novel identifies these exiles as having previously borne the name Dustin before their expulsion from the Reach by House Peake. They established White Harbor to defend the White Knife and gradually became the North’s wealthiest house 33.

Submission to Aegon and the Dance of the Dragons

Torrhen Stark, the last King in the North, submitted to Aegon the Conqueror beside the Trident, earning the name “the King Who Knelt.” Some northern warriors refused submission, crossed the Narrow Sea, and founded the Rose Company in exile 43.

During the Dance of the Dragons, the Winter Wolves under Rodrik Dustin earned a formidable reputation. Their surviving members were rumored to have later founded the Wolf Pack Company in Essos. After the civil war, Cregan Stark briefly asserted his authority in King’s Landing during the “Wolf Hour” before returning north for winter 6 43.

Rickard Stark’s Southern Policy

Rickard Stark pursued closer relations with the great southern houses. He fostered Eddard at the Eyrie, betrothed Brandon to Catelyn Tully, and arranged Lyanna’s engagement to Robert Baratheon. He also proposed building another Wall one hundred leagues north of the existing structure to incorporate the intervening territory into the realm 45.

Brandon led the northern delegation to the Harrenhal tournament, where the four Stark siblings appeared together alongside northern bannermen 48 51 52.

Robert’s Uprising

The deaths of Rickard and Brandon Stark at Aerys II’s hands made Eddard the new Lord of Winterfell. When Aerys demanded Eddard’s and Robert’s heads, Jon Arryn refused to surrender them, and the North joined the emerging rebellion 78 80.

Eddard traveled north through White Harbor to summon his bannermen, then returned south with more than ten thousand soldiers, leaving Benjen in charge of Winterfell. His marriage to Catelyn Tully, alongside Jon Arryn’s marriage to Lysa Tully, consolidated the alliance linking the North, Vale, Riverlands, and Stormlands 80 108 109.

Jon Arryn later nominated Eddard to command the march on King’s Landing. The allied army entered a city already taken, and Eddard assumed responsibility for the city while Titus Peake retained control of the Red Keep 123 140.

Southern Expedition and Aftermath

When Eddard left to search for Lyanna, he transferred command of the northern army to Titus. Roose Bolton and Rickard Karstark served as field commanders during the expedition against the Reach 154 159.

Northern troops helped rout the Hightower contingent outside Storm’s End. After the campaign, the northern lords collected substantial rewards and remained there to await Eddard’s return 172 187.

Eddard’s search ended with Lyanna’s death. Only Howland Reed and William Dustin survived among his six noble companions at the Tower of Joy. Titus later attempted to console him with news of the northern army’s discipline and money reserved for Winterfell 184 191.

Organization and Fighting Qualities

  • Heavy cavalry: Northern mounted troops perform essentially the same battlefield role as southern knights, despite usually lacking religious knighthood 159.
  • Resilience: Northern soldiers are renowned for endurance, resolve, and tolerance of pain. The narrative attributes these qualities to harsh living conditions rather than special First Men blood 159.
  • Command arrangements: Bolton and Karstark guard the expedition’s left flank; other northern troops join Titus’s central army 154.
  • Health concerns: Roose requests additional medicine because the south’s heat and humidity expose northerners to acclimatization problems and disease 154.
  • Storm’s End campaign: Dreadfort and Karhold troops attack the Hightower forces, while a substantial northern contingent remains in the central reserve 172.
  • Naval weakness: The North’s naval strength is described as being near the bottom of the Seven Kingdoms, comparable to the weak Stormlands fleet 197.

Relations with Titus Peake

  • Eddard Stark — Titus’s sworn brother and principal connection to Winterfell; entrusts him with command of the northern army 43 154.
  • Howland Reed — Befriends Titus at Harrenhal, creating a connection with Greywater Watch 52 231.
  • Roose Bolton — Serves as Titus’s deputy during the southern campaign and later asks him to educate his heir, Domeric. Titus accepts the future squireship 154 231.
  • House Karstark — Cooperates closely with Titus during the expedition and remains on good terms with him afterward 154 231.
  • House Manderly — Retains its ancestral hostility toward House Peake. Wylis Manderly remains cold toward Titus despite their service in the same army 33 52 191.
