History

Service to House Gardener

Alester Tyrell entered the service of Garwin Gardener V and became the king’s personal guard and sworn shield. His competence earned royal favor, and House Gardener made the stewardship of Highgarden hereditary in his family 28.

During the struggle between Houses Peake and Manderly for the Reach’s throne, Ser Osmon Tyrell united forty houses against the rebels. He recovered Highgarden and crowned Mern Gardener VI. Thereafter, the Tyrell stewardship became the High Stewardship, and the family gained permission to marry into House Gardener, supporting its subsequent claims of descent from Garth Greenhand 28.

Acquisition of Highgarden

After Mern IX and his sons died at the Field of Fire, High Steward Harlan Tyrell surrendered Highgarden to Aegon the Conqueror. Aegon rewarded him with the castle and authority over the Reach, placing former stewards above numerous houses with more illustrious ancestry 6 28.

Harlan later marched against Hellholt during the First Dornish War. His army suffered from heat, thirst, and poisoned fish before occupying an abandoned castle. It subsequently disappeared in the desert; accounts attributed its destruction to House Uller 232.

The Marriage Alliance

The marriage of Ross Tyrell and Olenna Redwyne strengthened Highgarden’s position. Their son Mace subsequently married the third daughter of House Hightower, binding the Tyrells to the Reach’s other two foremost houses 28.

This alliance restrained nobles who disputed the Tyrells’ ancestry and right to rule. Nevertheless, Titus Peake regarded their authority as vulnerable to a major defeat, particularly because powerful houses such as Rowan possessed substantial independent resources 28 30.

Holdings and Resources

Highgarden

  • Fortifications: Three walls and three gates protect the castle. The hedge maze between the outer and second walls also serves as a defensive obstacle, with dead ends and concealed traps 29.
  • Harbor: Connects Highgarden to river traffic on the Mander; the harbor district becomes an Ironborn target during the war 158.
  • Religious patronage: The Tyrells honor both the Old and New Gods. Highgarden’s sept includes depictions of the Seven and Garth Greenhand, reinforcing the family’s claimed connection to the Gardeners 29.
  • River transport: House Tyrell provides flower boats for the Reach delegation traveling toward Harrenhal 32.

Wealth and Regional Authority

  • Treasury: Highgarden raises the full one million gold dragons demanded by Titus within his deadline, drawing on accumulated wealth 187.
  • Summoning authority: The family invokes the titles “Warden of the South” and “High Steward of the Reach” when ordering Reach lords to assemble 28.
  • Limits of control: Noble houses retain enough independence to delay mobilization, disregard summons, or abandon Mace on the battlefield 84 173.
  • Postwar decline: Territorial losses reduce the house’s strength; by this point, Titus’s directly controlled lands exceed the Tyrells’ in area 188 226.

Relationships

  • House Gardener — Former royal patrons. Service, hereditary office, and later intermarriage formed the basis of the Tyrells’ rise 28.
  • House Targaryen — Granted the family Highgarden and regional supremacy. House Tyrell supports the royalist cause during Robert’s uprising 28 84.
  • House Redwyne — Principal marriage ally through Olenna and Mina. Paxter secures assurances that Mace will survive, but later pursues the Arbor’s interests independently 33 178 226.
  • House Hightower — Principal marriage ally through Mace’s wife. Baelor Hightower fights alongside Mace and is captured during the southern army’s defeat 28 173.
  • House Peake / Titus Peake — Former subordinate turned rival. Titus defeats Mace, extracts reparations, and becomes a rallying figure for nobles dissatisfied with Highgarden 173 176 229.
  • House Florent — Rival claimant to precedence in the Reach. Alester accepts Titus’s offer to undermine Mace in exchange for favorable treatment and greater political standing 171.
  • House Rowan — A powerful potential rival. Its troops withdraw rather than rescue Mace’s forces, although Mathis Rowan later attends Olenna’s gathering 30 173 247.
  • Houses Fossoway — Both branches are described as longstanding Tyrell loyalists guarding important river mouths for Highgarden 247.
  • House Baratheon — Wartime enemy and eventual ruling dynasty. The Tyrell siege of Storm’s End becomes a central grievance in the settlement imposed after the war 143 171.

Major Story Arcs

Harrenhal Delegation

Highgarden summons the Reach nobility before the Harrenhal tournament. Mace introduces Willas at the gathering, while the journey itself is led by Paxter Redwyne with Highgarden’s master-at-arms, Ser Timo Crane, as deputy 28 30 33.

War and the Siege of Storm’s End

House Tyrell mobilizes against Robert’s uprising, but the Reach’s response is uneven. Mace later approves Alyn Cuy’s deceptive request to attack Starpike, failing to recognize Titus’s maneuver 84 96.

After Robert gains the throne, Mace remains outside Storm’s End. Titus approaches with more than thirty thousand men, while an Ironborn fleet threatens Highgarden from the Mander, placing the family under pressure on two fronts 158 159.

Defeat and Reparations

Titus exploits divisions within the Reach command. Alester Florent withholds the rear, Rowan withdraws, and Mace’s vanguard is encircled. Mace and several allied lords are captured 171 173 174.

Titus demands one million gold dragons for Mace’s ransom and Highgarden’s reparations, payable within one month. Mace agrees after threats against Highgarden; Olenna authorizes payment, and Titus releases him once the money arrives 176 187.

Paxter persuades Titus that destroying House Tyrell could destabilize the Reach through its extensive marriage connections. Titus retains the family as a useful political counterweight while consolidating his own acquisitions 178.

Attempts to Recover Influence

Olenna proposes Janna as Titus’s bride and Willas as his squire. Titus rejects both overtures, unwilling to compromise his standing as Highgarden’s principal opponent 229.

The family then hosts a gathering intended to rebuild support among powerful Reach nobles. The absence of Houses Meadows, Hightower, Cuy, Florent, and Redwyne exposes its weakening alliances 246 247.

Olenna increasingly invests in Mace’s children as the house’s future. Alongside distinct plans for the three sons, she commissions investigations into Lyanna Stark’s upbringing so that Margaery can be trained in a similar image—a clever, spirited rider and fighter capable of captivating the king 249.
