Kohoro knew how terrifying the giant was. Everything he did was to let Drogo retreat safely.
So although he counterattacked the giant, he rode in circles as he attacked, focusing on harassment, and ordered Drogo's soldiers nearby to join in holding the giant back.
Kohoro did not need to kill the giant. He only needed to keep him occupied long enough for Drogo to retreat. Even if he had to spend his soldiers' lives, he had to hold the giant back.
Under Kohoro's command, the surrounding soldiers began using their flesh and lives to block the giant.
Because the giant form Modun transformed into caused so much damage, he generally pushed deep into enemy lines alone, keeping a considerable distance from friendly troops.
Thus, Drogo's soldiers managed to block Modun with their bodies for a time. Some clever soldiers came up with a plan, throwing ropes and chains to try to subdue the giant. Even when he used the Jaw Titan's nimble leaps, the surrounding soldiers soon pursued him on horseback, heedless of their lives.
Although his sharp claws countered the ropes and chains, tearing them apart, they still slowed his advance.
But Modun always kept Eren's orders firmly in mind. To him, Eren's commands were supreme, and whatever difficulties arose, he had to complete the task Eren had given him.
So even as his advance was blocked again, he continued moving resolutely toward Drogo. He had to carry out his king's command.
But as the soldiers obstructed him, Drogo drew farther and farther away, and he could only let out a furious roar.
When Eren's army saw the Jaw Titan being held back by the enemy, they began moving to support Modun. Seeing this, the surrounding enemy troops hurried to block their advance.
Both sides became embroiled in a fierce melee. Eren's soldiers furiously assaulted the defensive line of Drogo's soldiers, while Drogo's soldiers tried to hold off their attack.
Unfortunately, Eren's soldiers were too numerous, and Drogo's men also had to split their forces to protect their Khal and block the giant's attacks. This left their defensive line weak, and Eren's army broke through it.
The scattered pockets of resistance were soon swallowed beneath the hooves of Eren's army.
Under their squad leader's command, one squad successfully pushed through to the area around the Jaw Titan.
They immediately attacked the enemy troops surrounding the Jaw Titan. Seeing men attacking them, the enemy had no choice but to divert some of their forces to stop them, leaving fewer men to obstruct Modun.
Feeling the pressure ease at once, he tore straight through the defensive line, leaving severed limbs in his wake. Kohoro, too, died in Modun's jaws.
Modun pursued Drogo. Seeing that all was lost, some of Drogo's soldiers at the rear could only flee in the same direction as Drogo.
The soldiers still resisting also lost much of their will to fight. Seeing this, the soldiers of Eren's army all shouted together:
"Lay down your weapons! Those who surrender will be spared!"
"Lay down your weapons! Those who surrender will be spared!"
"Lay down your weapons! Those who surrender will be spared!"
The calls to surrender echoed across the grasslands. As fellow Dothraki, they faced no language barrier.
Hearing the calls to surrender, some of the soldiers still resisting involuntarily lowered their weapons. After all, they only had one life, and among the Dothraki, battles between Khalasars were frequent, as were conquests. It was common for warriors from a conquered Khalasar to switch allegiance.
These surrendering soldiers quickly raised both hands, laid down their weapons, knelt on both knees, and bowed their heads in submission.
But there were also some diehard loyalists of Drogo. These men had grown up in Drogo's Khalasar, living through the rule of both Drogo's father, Belbo, and Drogo himself. They were utterly loyal to Drogo's Khalasar.
Eren's soldiers showed no mercy to those who stubbornly resisted, raising their blades and chopping off their heads. To them, these men were walking military merit.
After all, Eren had said they would be assigned partners.
The more heads they took, the better the partners they would be assigned. Meanwhile, Modun saw that Drogo was riding away quite fast, and that even at his speed, he could not catch up anytime soon. An idea struck him, and he grabbed some of Drogo's slower-fleeing soldiers.
With a powerful throw, he hurled men and horses straight toward Drogo. Drogo was fleeing toward the camp under Haggo and Qotho's protection, occasionally turning his head to check behind him.
When Haggo looked back, he saw the giant casually grab a slow-fleeing soldier and hurl him, horse and all, toward them. He was instantly startled.
With so little time, he could only leap forcefully from his horse, wrap his arms around Drogo, and dive off to one side, taking him to the ground.
Qotho, beside them, had yet to understand why Haggo had pulled Drogo off his horse to dodge aside.
Then the hurtling horse and rider struck him directly. At the instant of impact, a trace of bewilderment still lingered in his eyes.
Then he was crushed into pulp along with the horse and rider hurled at him, splattering Drogo and Haggo beside him with blood. Quite a few pieces of bodily tissue also flew onto the two of them.
Haggo felt something hanging from his hair. He wiped a hand through it and found a length of intestine in his hand. As a Bloodrider, Haggo had fought in countless battles, large and small.
But being covered in entrails that might have belonged to his friend or someone else still sent a chill through him. He began to doubt whether they could escape the giant's grasp this time.
Beside him, Drogo rose from the ground. With things having reached this point, he knew escape was no longer possible. He could only fight to the death for a sliver of hope.
He had never lost from childhood to adulthood and had never known what defeat was. This time, however, he experienced just how cruel defeat could be.
But his pride would not allow him to bow to the enemy. Even if he died, he would die fighting rather than flee like a coward.
Drogo picked up his weapon from the ground and roared at the giant.
"Aah!!!"
After throwing a horse, Modun saw Drogo dodge and then roar at him. Contempt showed in his eyes. Then he picked up another corpse from the ground and hurled it at Drogo.
Seeing the giant's thrown attack coming, Drogo rolled aside to dodge. Haggo, however, remained where he was, questioning his life, and the hurtling corpse struck him directly, leaving him with the same fate as Qotho.
After throwing the corpse, Modun sprinted straight toward Drogo. Seeing the giant bearing down on him, Drogo launched his final attack with the curved blade in his hand.
Unfortunately, Modun simply caught him in his hand. Looking at Drogo, Modun said:
"Submit or die."
Drogo struggled hard to break free of the giant's hand, but to no avail. When his struggles proved fruitless, he roared at Modun:
"I am Khal Drogo, son of Khal Belbo! I would die before surrendering!"
Listening to Drogo's roar, Modun said flatly:
"Then die."
With that, he tightened his hand. In an instant, Drogo burst like a squeezed balloon, blood spraying everywhere.
