History
Service under Eren
Modun served among Eren’s commanders before receiving Titan power, reporting his unit’s casualties alongside Flock, Link, and Colin. At Vaes Dothrak, the four escorted the Dosh Khaleen outside to witness Eren’s display of Giant power 10 13.
Eren chose Modun as the first subordinate to receive one of his Titan powers because of his direct loyalty, tournament performance, stamina, and age. Modun initially feared being turned into a mindless Pure Titan, but eagerly accepted after learning that he would retain the ability to transform at will. He considered the fifteen-year lifespan acceptable: at twenty-five, it would allow him to live to forty, already a substantial lifespan among the constantly warring Dothraki 14.
After training him, Eren publicized Modun’s transformation as evidence that divine favor could grant warriors the Power of the Giants. Modun consequently became both a battlefield asset and a demonstration of the rewards available through service to Eren 16.
Subjugating a khalasar
When a visiting khal mocked Eren and refused to submit, Modun transformed at close range, crushed the khal and nearby guards, and pursued the survivors. He then charged the opposing warriors through their arrows 17.
Modun offered to spare those who surrendered and stopped killing once they complied. Remaining in Titan form, he kept them kneeling until Eren’s soldiers took custody. He reported seventy thousand captives, including fifty thousand Dothraki, of whom forty thousand were fit to fight. Eren subsequently expanded the commands of Modun, Flock, Colin, and Link 18.
Slaver’s Bay campaign
At Meereen, Eren assigned Modun thirty thousand Guard Corps soldiers and ordered him to seize the harbor. Modun transformed after entering the city, cleared rubble with his claws, and joined Eren and the cavalry in killing the defending soldiers. His forces then held the harbor, killing slave masters and capturing slaves and commoners under Eren’s orders 19 20.
Afterward, Modun organized more than ten thousand captive women for Eren’s consort selection. He prepared the examination tent, managed the queue, and enforced orders preventing others from touching the captives 21 22.
During the assault on Yunkai, Modun broke the reinforced gate by repeatedly ramming it with his Titan’s mask. He then became trapped in the narrow passage and was blinded by the Unsullied’s thrown spears. Flock’s suggestion to climb the wall broke the stalemate: Modun scaled it, attacked the defenders from above, and cleared the way for the cavalry. Eren nevertheless reprimanded him for his handling of the battle 23 24.
At Astapor, Modun and Flock coordinated their attack. Modun used Flock’s body as a springboard to reach the wall while Flock smashed through the gate. After the city fell, they proposed preserving the captured Unsullied instructors to train imperial infantry. Eren approved the proposal and ordered the instructors properly fed and cared for 30 31.
Training Flock
When Flock lost his reason during his first transformation, Eren sent Modun to fight him. Modun used his superior agility to evade attacks and inflict wounds, but could not fight freely without endangering his fellow commander. After Pure Titans restrained Flock, Modun severed his Titan form’s genitals in an ill-judged attempt to shock him awake. The pain instead activated Flock’s control over Pure Titans, forcing Eren to intervene 26.
Modun later explained the Screaming Giant’s abilities to Flock but omitted that particular injury from his account, fearing it would damage their relationship. During another training session, pain and shouting failed to wake Flock; Modun finally succeeded by threatening that Flock would lose his women and any future opportunity to receive more. The two then sparred so Flock could practice controlling his body and using Hardening 27.
Defeat of Khal Drogo
After scouts located another khalasar, Eren dispatched an eighty-thousand-man force in pursuit. Modun led fifty thousand men into battle against Drogo’s warriors while Link’s thirty thousand remained in reserve. An enemy speared Modun through the chest during the initial clash, only for him to transform amid the opposing riders 39 40.
Eren used the Coordinate to direct Modun toward a long-braided warrior he suspected was the khal. Kohoro delayed the pursuit by shooting the Jaw Titan’s right eye and drawing Modun away while Drogo retreated. Other warriors obstructed Modun with their bodies, ropes, and chains 41 42.
Modun eventually hurled riders, horses, and corpses toward the fleeing group, killing Qotho and Haggo. He caught Drogo and offered him surrender or death. When Drogo refused, Modun crushed him in his hand 42.
After the victory, Modun guarded the surrendered warriors and reported 5,123 dead and 295 severely wounded among Eren’s troops. He selected guides to Drogo’s camp and remained responsible for escorting the prisoners back 43.
Royal Guard command
During the subsequent reorganization, Eren renamed Modun’s force the Royal Guard and promoted him to corps commander. Modun also received responsibility for distributing head-count records and arranging partners for eligible warriors, including handling the inherited rewards of dead or severely wounded soldiers. Eren additionally ordered the selection of female warriors to guard his song and dance troupe 46.
Before the march toward Pentos, Modun reported that his units’ losses had been replenished with captured warriors 50.
Appearance
Modun’s Jaw Titan is a masked, clawed form customized by Eren to increase its destructive reach while preserving its speed and agility 15 17.
- Height: Described as twelve meters during its initial transformation and later sparring, but approximately ten meters during the Yunkai assault 15 24 26.
- Head: A mask, sharp fangs, and enormous upper and lower jaws; the mask is sturdy enough to ram a reinforced gate 15 17 23.
- Limbs: Sharp claws used for cutting, climbing, and gripping terrain 23 24 26.
- Movement: Frequently runs on all fours and uses powerful leaps in combat 17 30.
Personality
Modun is intensely loyal to Eren, treating his commands as obligations to be fulfilled despite resistance or danger. He reacts angrily when others mock his king and accepts the shortened lifespan of a Titan holder as a worthwhile price for serving Eren and the empire 14 17 42.
His preferred approach is to meet force with force. At Yunkai, he initially fails to consider options beyond the gate because he is still thinking like an ordinary human rather than exploiting his Titan body. He can nevertheless develop practical solutions: he later uses thrown horses and bodies to disrupt Drogo’s retreat and helps propose retaining Unsullied instructors for future infantry training 23 31 42.
Titan power also brings out his cruelty. During his first battle in that form, he compares a fleeing man to the ants he crushed as a child and deliberately kills him with one finger. Yet he honors his promise to stop killing warriors who surrender, using intimidation instead to keep them compliant 17 18.
Abilities & Skills
Jaw Titan Transformation
- Transforms through injury and deliberate intent, commonly cutting or biting his palm; the change produces yellow lightning and light 15 17 19.
- Can also transform after sustaining an enemy-inflicted wound, as demonstrated when a spear pierces his chest 40.
- Retains his reason after training, although his first transformation causes a berserk state, exhaustion, and a three-hour sleep 15 16.
- His power carries a fifteen-year lifespan limit imposed by Eren 14.
Strength, Claws, and Bite
- Crushes people in his hands, tears through riders and horses, and throws mounted warriors as projectiles 17 41 42.
- Uses his claws to sever limbs, destroy restraints, and clear rubble 19 26 42.
- Eren describes his bite as capable of overcoming masonry and potentially biting through Valyrian steel; the latter is presented as a possibility, not a demonstrated feat 15.
- Modun states that his Jaw Titan can penetrate the hardened defenses of Flock’s Screaming Giant 27.
Agility and Climbing
- Uses rapid leaps to evade a larger Titan and attack from different directions 26.
- Scales Yunkai’s nearly thirty-meter wall by combining jumps with claw holds 24.
- Coordinates with Flock to vault onto Astapor’s walls 30.
Regeneration and Vulnerabilities
- Eren states that Modun’s human body regenerates provided his head is neither pierced through nor severed 14.
- His Titan body rapidly heals wounds and feels no pain during his charge through arrows 17.
- Eye injuries can temporarily blind him, as shown at Yunkai and against Kohoro 23 41.
- The nape remains a critical weak point; Modun shields it when under fire 23 30.
- Regeneration does not prevent exhaustion, obstruction by confined terrain, or delays caused by massed enemies and restraints 15 23 42.
Combat and Command
- Defeats ten consecutive opponents in Eren’s tournament before gaining Titan power 14.
- Commands large cavalry formations, including fifty thousand men against Drogo 40.
- Oversees surrender, prisoner security, casualty reporting, and replacement recruitment 18 43 50.
- Recognizes the captured Unsullied instructors’ value for building an imperial infantry force 31.
Equipment
- Small knife — Used to cut his palm and trigger Titan transformation 15 17.
- Horse — His mount while accompanying Eren and leading cavalry before transforming 16 19 40.
- Long blade — Used during Flock’s training to inflict a controlled, nonfatal wound near the nape and attempt to restore his awareness 27.
Relationships
- Eren — King, superior, and source of his Titan power. Personally selects and trains Modun, reprimands his mistakes, and eventually promotes him to command the Royal Guard 14 16 24 46.
- Flock — Fellow commander, Titan sparring partner, and battlefield collaborator. Flock helps him overcome the Yunkai stalemate; Modun subsequently assists Flock’s training and values their relationship enough to conceal his most reckless intervention 23 26 27 30 31.
- Khal Drogo — Enemy commander whom Modun pursues, captures, and kills after he refuses to surrender 41 42.
- Kohoro — Opponent who wounds Modun’s right eye and temporarily diverts him from pursuing Drogo 41.
