Chapters 51–71 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 51Setting out

Eren ordered his army west and led it on a month-long march toward Qohor, where he planned to trade for supplies without revealing the full strength of his forces. The army camped in Qohor Forest while Eren prepared to enter the city with a smaller force.

  • Eren ordered the messengers to have every unit prepare to depart within two hours.
  • The army marched west with 150 Colossal Titans and ten thousand Dothraki cavalry, forcing the prisoners to keep pace as they traveled.
  • Eren rode at the front in a bunker formed from a Pure Titan with Hardening and noted that its crystal walls became too bright in sunlight.
  • After a month, Eren brought his army near Qohor and decided to trade there rather than conquer the city, to avoid alarming Pentos and the Targaryen descendants.
  • Eren told Flock and Link to conceal the main camp in Qohor Forest while he took part of the army into Qohor to buy supplies and seek tribute.

Ch. 52Qohor

At a feast in Qohor, Yuri learned that a new Dothraki khalasar had arrived outside the city, and he ended the gathering to assess the threat. The nobles prepared to meet at the walls and discuss how to respond.

  • Yuri and Rick toasted each other as nobles celebrated at Yuri’s mansion.
  • Lyon reported that about ten thousand Dothraki had appeared outside Qohor, and Yuri asked whether they belonged to Khal Jheko.
  • Lyon confirmed that the khalasar was led by a different Khal and warned that more Dothraki might be camped nearby.
  • Yuri ended the feast and asked the heads of the families to accompany him and the priest to the walls.
  • Rick urged Yuri to notify the absent nobles and gather everyone at the walls to discuss a response.

Ch. 53Negotiations

Eren brought his army to Qohor and demanded a share of the tribute the city paid to Jheko. Yuri Macsuos came out to negotiate, and Eren stated his strength and purpose.

  • Yuri dismissed the dancers and ordered the hall prepared in case Qohor reached an agreement with the approaching Khalasar.
  • Eren rode to Qohor with ten thousand troops, Modun, and John, then refused to negotiate with Lyon and demanded that a Qohor noble meet him.
  • Lyon reported Eren's demand to Yuri, who ordered him to gather the Unsullied and accompanied him outside the city.
  • Yuri introduced himself to Eren as a Qohor noble and offered to negotiate.
  • Eren identified himself as Khal of a seventy-thousand-strong Khalasar with thirty thousand Dothraki Screamers, and demanded a share of the tribute Qohor paid Jheko.

Ch. 54Negotiations

Yuri negotiated a payment of four hundred jin of gold to Khal Eren to avert war, then pressured Qohor’s nobles to help fund it. He set his own family’s contribution at fifty jin and threatened to destroy any family that refused to pay.

  • Yuri bargained with Eren, who agreed to accept four hundred jin of gold instead of going to war.
  • Yuri returned to Rick and the nobles and told them Eren’s demand; the nobles protested the cost.
  • Yuri urged the nobles to divide the payment among their families and the church, then silenced their objections by threatening to leave them to fight alone.
  • The nobles argued over their shares, while Yuri privately recalled that he had arranged the robbery one family cited as hardship.
  • Yuri pledged fifty jin of gold from his own family and threatened to wipe out any noble family that resisted contributing.

Ch. 55Trade

Eren accepted the four hundred jin of gold from Qohor’s representatives, then asked Yuri to arrange access to Qohor’s Valyrian-steel reworkers, food, and brocade weavers in exchange for gold. Yuri agreed to fetch the smiths but was left thinking Eren was shameless for using the gold he had just paid to buy Qohor’s goods.

  • Yuri, Rick, and the noble families gathered four hundred jin of gold and loaded it onto wagons for Eren.
  • Modun inspected the gold and confirmed to Eren that it was genuine.
  • Eren told Yuri he wanted to recruit Qohor’s smiths who could reforge Valyrian steel, and Yuri said he could take one if a smith agreed to go.
  • Eren asked Yuri to let him meet the smiths and recruit them himself, and Yuri prepared to fetch them.
  • Eren also asked to buy two million jin of food, mostly dry provisions, and hire some of Qohor’s brocade weavers; Yuri silently resented that Eren would use the gold he had paid to buy Qohor’s goods.

Ch. 56The smith

Yuri brought Qohor’s smiths and weavers to meet Eren after the city’s families agreed to sell him grain. Eren tried to recruit three master smiths by showing them a remarkably hard, colorful crystal, and their reaction left their decision unresolved.

  • Yuri told Qohor’s families about Eren’s demands, and they agreed to supply grain together rather than risk a war.
  • Yuri sent two brocade weavers and brought Qohor’s three master smiths—Master Hurt, Master Evans, and Master Torvin—to meet Eren.
  • Eren offered the smiths positions forging weapons and promised them a chance to make a lasting name for themselves.
  • Eren revealed a colorful crystal his khalasar had discovered and had John strike it with a Valyrian steel sword.
  • The crystal remained unscathed, and the three smiths stared at it in amazement.

Ch. 57Following

Eren showed three Qohor smiths a crystal created with his Hardening ability and offered to take one of them to the Dothraki Sea to study its use in forging weapons. Torvin chose to leave with Eren and bring along any apprentices who wished to go, while Evans had to remain in Qohor.

  • The three smiths tested the crystal with Lament and agreed that it might yield a weapon greater than Valyrian steel.
  • Eren invited the smiths to travel with him to the Dothraki Sea and study the crystal where he had found it.
  • Evans offered to go, but Hurt urged him to stay in Qohor so he could continue teaching apprentices.
  • Torvin volunteered to leave with Eren and bring his apprentices and their families if they agreed.
  • Eren accepted Torvin but explained that Yuri had allowed him to take only one smith, leaving Evans disappointed.

Ch. 58Settling in

Torvin recruited seven apprentices to join Eren and left Qohor with them as Yuri delivered the grain and Torvin arrived at Eren’s camp. Eren paid Yuri for the grain and brocade weavers, promised to leave Qohor once the grain was received, and sent Torvin with Modun to get settled.

  • Torvin invited his apprentices to follow him to serve a Khal, and seven chose to go while he promised the remaining three a share from the smithy’s sale.
  • Torvin sold his smithy and prepared to leave Qohor with the apprentices who had joined him.
  • Yuri arrived at Eren’s camp with the grain and five brocade weavers, while Mickey inspected the grain.
  • Eren paid Yuri the agreed amount for the grain and one jin of gold for the weavers, and promised to leave Qohor after receiving all the grain.
  • Eren sent Torvin with Modun to settle in with his people and tools.

Ch. 59Delivery

Modun settled Torvin and his people near his tent and told him that Eren’s Dothraki Empire was preparing to found a nation, while Torvin hoped to earn a noble title through service. Eren paid Yuri for Qohor’s grain and fodder, and Yuri rode back to Qohor with the gold as Eren privately planned to claim the city’s wealth someday.

  • Modun assigned tents near his own to Torvin, his apprentices, and their families, and promised to take Torvin to see the crystal after reporting to Eren.
  • Torvin questioned whether the Dothraki had enough strength to found a nation, and Modun said they were only the vanguard of a powerful empire.
  • Torvin imagined the empire’s cavalry and saw a chance to become a noble by earning Eren’s favor.
  • Eren praised Qohor’s grain reserves while privately deciding to plunder the city and seize its wealth someday.
  • Eren sent Yuri to John to receive gold for the grain and fodder, and Yuri counted the payment before riding back to Qohor.

Ch. 60Homecoming

Eren brought Torvin and the people from Qohor to the Empire’s base camp, where they saw the Dothraki’s vast forces and learned that Eren had destroyed Slaver’s Bay but intended to protect Qohor. Torvin then discovered that Eren’s divine crystal might be combined with Valyrian steel, though he knew the task would be difficult.

  • Eren returned to the base camp with grain and people from Qohor, and Torvin and his apprentices were astonished by its size.
  • Modun told Torvin that the Dothraki had conquered Slaver’s Bay, and Eren promised that Qohor would become his protected territory rather than be destroyed.
  • Torvin and the others saw three Titans, and Modun confirmed that Eren’s power had destroyed the cities of Slaver’s Bay.
  • Eren had Modun settle Torvin’s group near the Church of the Giants while he took two brocade weavers to his tent for measurements.
  • Modun explained that Eren created the crystal statue from divine power and wanted blacksmiths to test whether the crystal could be combined with Valyrian steel.
  • Torvin understood Eren’s plan but recognized that he would need to learn how Valyrian steel was made and what the crystal contained.

Ch. 61Setting out

Eren prepared his forces to leave Qohor and marched west toward Pentos, ordering his troops to control prisoners and anyone who might reveal their movements. In Qohor, Yuri’s scouts found evidence of an enormous army and giant footprints, leaving him worried despite his doubts about their report.

  • Eren assigned John to distribute provisions to the soldiers, authorized Flock to suppress prisoner revolts, left Torvin in Modun’s care, and ordered Link to guard the rear.
  • Eren led the Empire west toward Pentos, avoiding Norvos and sending scouts to seize nearby caravans and villages and take their people prisoner.
  • Yuri’s scouts found two huge camps northeast of Qohor and reported signs that at least a million people and enormous giants had been there.
  • Yuri doubted the reports of giants but concluded Eren’s force could include around forty thousand Dothraki cavalry and paid the scout for the information.

Ch. 62Arrival in Pentos

In Pentos, Viserys told Daenerys he planned to marry her to Khal Drogo in exchange for Dothraki support, and she submitted out of fear. Unbeknownst to them, Drogo was already dead, while Eren's army camped near Pentos and prepared to attack at dawn.

  • Viserys visited Daenerys and told her Illyrio had arranged a marriage alliance with Khal Drogo to secure his cavalry.
  • Daenerys resisted marrying a Dothraki stranger, but Viserys threatened her until she fell silent and accepted his plan.
  • Viserys told Daenerys that Illyrio had sent messengers to the Dothraki Sea and that Drogo might not respond until the next year.
  • Drogo had already died on the Dothraki Sea, though Viserys, Daenerys, and Illyrio did not know it.
  • Eren led his army to a hill outside Pentos, ordered scouts to investigate, and prepared to attack the city the next morning.

Ch. 63War begins

Eren led his Dothraki army to surround Pentos, sealing its harbor with Colossal Titans as Daenerys and Viserys tried to flee. He ordered his soldiers to find people with silver hair and purple eyes and allowed them to plunder and slaughter the rest.

  • Eren ordered Modun and the Royal Guard to stay behind and guard the camp and prisoners while the other three legions marched toward Pentos with the Colossal Titans.
  • Daenerys learned that roughly a hundred thousand Dothraki, accompanied by giants, were approaching Pentos.
  • Viserys took Daenerys to the harbor to escape by ship, but they saw the Colossal Titans block the harbor and build a hardened wall across the water.
  • Eren surrounded Pentos and ordered his Dothraki to bring him anyone with silver hair and purple eyes, while permitting them to plunder and slaughter others.

Ch. 64Entering the city

The Dothraki stormed Pentos after the Gundam Giant smashed through its gate, slaughtering residents and taking captives as they advanced toward the harbor. Viserys and Daenerys were cornered there by soldiers from John's army, leaving Viserys facing them with his sword drawn.

  • Eren led the Dothraki charge and used the Gundam Giant to destroy Pentos's gate and part of its wall.
  • The Dothraki entered Pentos, killed resisting residents, captured silver-haired people, and took others as slaves.
  • Mercenaries ambushed the Dothraki in the streets, but most were killed or forced to surrender.
  • The Dothraki pushed toward the harbor, where Viserys and Daenerys realized the blocked exit left them trapped.
  • A squad from John's army spotted the silver-haired siblings, surrounded them, and prompted Viserys to draw his sword.

Ch. 65Captured

Viserys and Daenerys were captured by the Dothraki and taken to Eren’s forces, where their Targaryen identities were recorded for special attention. As Eren’s army overran Pentos, Rolo told Illyrio that Drogo was dead and the city’s inhabitants must die or become slaves.

  • A Dothraki squad leader whipped Viserys, bound him and Daenerys, and took them to the gathering place for captured silver-haired people.
  • An interpreter helped the man in charge question Viserys, who revealed that he and Daenerys were Targaryens; their names were recorded for special attention.
  • Eren watched from atop a Gundam Giant as his army swept through Pentos and attacked the Governor’s Mansion.
  • Rolo confronted Illyrio and told him that Drogo was dead and that Pentos would become the Dothraki’s new territory.
  • Rolo told Illyrio that the original inhabitants could either die or become slaves who built a new realm for the Empire.

Ch. 66The curtain fell

After the Dothraki defeated Pentos, Rolo rejected Illyrio’s surrender and the Magister died amid the fighting. Eren watched the city burn and planned to rebuild it as the Empire’s new capital before conquering the Free Cities and eventually facing the Night’s King.

  • The Colossal Titan sealed off Pentos as the Dothraki attacked Illyrio’s stunned guards.
  • Rolo told Illyrio that surrendered Dothraki enemies became slaves, then revealed he had only offered surrender to torment him.
  • The Dothraki routed Illyrio’s guards; when they surrendered, Illyrio attacked them in desperation and they killed him.
  • Rolo ordered the Dothraki to search Illyrio’s estate and carry every treasure back to camp.
  • The Dothraki looted the Magisters’ estates, drove Pentos’s survivors out, and set the city ablaze.
  • Eren planned to rebuild Pentos as the Empire’s capital, conquer the Free Cities, and later confront the Night’s King.

Ch. 67The List

Eren planned to rebuild Pentos into the center of a new nation and organized prisoners and interpreters for the work. After receiving a list of people with Valyrian features, he found Viserys Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen and ordered them brought to him.

  • Eren told Lydia and the four commanders that he would dismantle Pentos, preserve its materials and supplies, and build a new city east of the harbor.
  • Eren assigned prisoners to clear and reclaim land, ordered their occupations recorded, and told John to make Dothraki language instruction a long-term task.
  • Flock presented a list of roughly one or two hundred people with silver hair and purple eyes whom the armies had identified in Pentos.
  • Eren found Viserys Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen on the list and ordered Flock to bring them before him.
  • Eren ordered the women with Valyrian features sent to his harem and the men kept well supplied, while considering how their bloodlines might serve his plans.

Ch. 68An audience

Eren received Viserys and Daenerys, intimidated Viserys, and offered to help him fight Robert in exchange for submission. Viserys refused at first, relying on Khal Drogo, but Eren revealed that Drogo was dead and his Khalasar had surrendered.

  • Eren welcomed Viserys and Daenerys and had Lydia announce his titles after Viserys demanded to be released.
  • Eren intimidated Viserys, then reminded the siblings of their years fleeing Robert and offered to help Viserys attack him if Viserys submitted as king.
  • Viserys rejected Eren's offer and said he planned to use Khal Drogo's gifts to reclaim Westeros.
  • Eren revealed that he had killed Drogo and taken command of his Khalasar, leaving Viserys stunned and Daenerys relieved.

Ch. 69In His Hands

After defeating Drogo, Eren forced Viserys to accept Daenerys’s marriage to him in exchange for Dragonstone and the deaths of his enemies. Daenerys was left with Eren’s people, frightened and separated from her brother.

  • Viserys struggled to accept Drogo’s death and Eren’s offer to grant him wealth and privilege instead of the Iron Throne.
  • Eren proposed marrying Daenerys and promised to conquer Dragonstone for Viserys, but Viserys demanded Eren’s army and titans as well.
  • Eren ordered Modun to break Viserys’s arm, then warned him to accept the marriage proposal or face worse consequences.
  • Viserys agreed to marry Daenerys to Eren, and Eren promised to offer the heads of Eddard Stark, Jon Arryn, and Robert Baratheon as the bride price.
  • Viserys told Daenerys to stay with Eren, and Eren had Lydia comfort her and take her to settle in.

Ch. 70Dragon eggs

Eren ordered Viserys taken to his quarters and examined dragon eggs looted from Pentos, identifying the three from Illyrio’s mansion that had hatched Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal. He promoted Rolo and told him to recruit from the Dothraki children finishing their training in two months, while he considered what else he needed to hatch the dragons.

  • Eren sent Modun to settle Viserys and arrange Dothraki women to attend him, intending for Viserys to father children.
  • Eren asked Flock about unusual spoils from Pentos and learned that more than twenty dragon eggs had been collected from magisters’ mansions.
  • Eren had Rolo identify the three eggs taken from Illyrio’s mansion, and Rolo found the deep black, dark green, and pale cream eggs.
  • Eren examined the eggs and concluded that he still needed Blood Magic and the Red Comet to recreate the conditions that had hatched Daenerys’s dragons.
  • Eren promoted Rolo to division commander and told him to recruit from the new blood after their training finished in two months.

Ch. 71Taking stock

Eren sorted the prisoners from Slaver's Bay and Pentos into labor groups to rebuild the ruins of Pentos and produce weapons. He then tested whether Daenerys could handle fire by asking her to retrieve the Dragon Eggs, but when she hesitated, he called for boiling water to demonstrate her ability.

  • Dothraki Warriors drove the prisoners from their beds, and Eren divided them by trade and assigned the boys aged twelve to fifteen to Unsullied instructors.
  • After half a month, Eren sorted roughly seven hundred thousand adult men, placing smiths under Torvin, farmers on agricultural work, and other laborers on clearing the ruins of Pentos.
  • Prisoners cleared bodies and rubble from Pentos under guard, while smiths at Torvin's camp forged weapons for the Dothraki.
  • Eren kept three Dragon Eggs in a brazier for half a month and brought Daenerys over with Lydia to see whether she was connected to them.
  • Daenerys refused to take the Dragon Eggs from the flames, so Eren asked Lydia to bring a basin of boiling water.
