Background

Douglas was born a commoner and worked as a robber, pirate, and mercenary before purchasing his knighthood. By the campaign against Lys, he had twenty years of experience fighting at sea, including encounters with pirates, storms, and sea monsters 178 398 588.

He pledged himself to Redd at Maidenpool, immediately kneeling and expressing his loyalty. Service under Redd brought him unprecedented authority, but Douglas understood that retaining it depended on completing his assignments and remaining useful to his patron 178 183.

Appearance

Douglas is initially described as lean from hardship, with thick, powerful arms and an impression of shrewd competence 178.

  • Lys injuries: Palace explosions left his left arm powerless, his right leg bleeding, and his throat so badly damaged by smoke that he could barely speak 423 424.
  • Burns: When he later approached Redd with surviving soldiers, his hair and eyebrows had been burned away, his face was blackened, and the left side of his body was still bleeding 443.
  • Later condition: Supply voyages left him thinner and darker-skinned, with salt-weathered marks across his face and cracked lips. Months of administrative work subsequently gave him sunken eyes and prominent cheekbones 559 593 599.

Personality

Douglas is ambitious, pragmatic, and acutely conscious of the insecurity of his position. Commanding a fleet was a long-held dream, and he carefully shapes his reports to appear capable without seeming boastful or overshadowing Redd. His deference can become theatrical: after believing he had failed against the Lysene fleet, he prostrated himself and nearly tried to cling to Redd’s leg 183 212 392 393 395.

His fear does not prevent him from fighting. He openly admits being frightened of dragons, yet later stands steadily before Demon Dragons and continues serving Redd after suffering severe injuries at Lys. He is also attached to his sailors, knowing their names, families, and favorite drinks, and is deeply distressed by their deaths in Lys’s channels 204 407 443 589.

That concern coexists with extreme ruthlessness. He forbids looting and attacks on civilians during the Lys landing, but later orders the massacre of nearly twenty thousand defiant slaves to intimidate a much larger slave army. He regards religious organizations as little different from mercenaries or bandits and professes belief in neither gods nor religious doctrine, valuing power and money instead 410 588 594.

Abilities & Skills

Douglas is an experienced seafarer capable of directing fleets under attack 393 398.

  • Preserves his men by fighting while withdrawing from the Lysene fleet, earning Redd’s praise 393.
  • Studies channels, island fortifications, and possible attack routes before approaching Lys; correctly identifies the main channel as a trap 404.
  • Reorganizes ships around the flagship and coordinates shields, rowers, and formations under ballista fire 407 408.
  • Revises the supply route between Volantis and the Valyrian camp, replacing detours with more direct passages 560.

Battlefield Leadership

Douglas commands both shipboard troops and land formations, using forceful orders to restore discipline 398 410.

  • Organizes shield bearers and spearmen back-to-back during a Fishman boarding attack 398.
  • Divides the Lys landing force into three columns while explicitly prohibiting looting, arson, and harm to civilians 410.
  • Leads a controlled withdrawal against Half-orcs and Trolls without breaking the soldiers’ ranks 545.
  • Uses religious rhetoric to raise morale, proclaiming Redd the “Dragon God” during the Pentos purge 230.

Administration and Logistics

Douglas handles labor, manufacturing, transport, provisioning, and reconstruction 183 522 554 561.

  • Supervises enslaved laborers, miners, and smiths according to Redd’s standards 183.
  • Reports supply totals, consumption, reserves, and the operational consequences of delayed shipments 522 554.
  • Inspects defensive walls, sentry posts, and trenches rather than relying solely on reports 531.
  • Coordinates reconstruction, harbor repairs, and the search for craftsmen able to reforge Valyrian steel 561 576 585.
  • Establishes direct reporting from city-state garrison commanders, bypassing potentially unreliable intermediaries 594.

Investigation and Intelligence

Douglas gathers information through scouts, searches, interrogation, and analysis 220 276 393 394.

  • Deduces that a Faceless Man has disguised himself as a slave and hidden in the mines after a slave’s body is discovered 220.
  • Reports suspected coordination between Qohor and the Kingdom of the Three Daughters, then monitors the latter’s military buildup 276 285.
  • Uncovers Daemon’s departure for Lys with the Stepstones garrison, available ships, and several mysterious black-robed figures 394 395.
  • Recognizes the danger posed by the apparently unarmed Black-Robed Leader, refusing to relax his guard despite the surrounding soldiers 418.

Swordsmanship

Douglas remains dangerous in close combat despite having no documented supernatural powers 588 590.

  • Kills at least twenty attackers while attempting to escape the ambush in Pentos’s Council Chamber 590.
  • Survives through advance preparation as well as combat ability: troops outside the city had orders to attack at the first sign of trouble, and an escape route had already been arranged 591.

Delegated Demon Dragon Command

King Ghidorah’s golden scale allows Douglas to command Demon Dragons without possessing an independent bond comparable to Redd’s 588 601.

  • Initially receives authorization to take fifty Demon Dragons from the Underground Dragonpit 588.
  • Selects three large dragons as the formation’s main force and groups the others by size and age for sustained flight 589.
  • Eventually deploys all one hundred Demon Dragons stationed in Volantis during the campaign against the Red God Church 603.
  • His authority is revocable: the dragons’ ultimate loyalty belongs to King Ghidorah and Redd, who can override Douglas even without recovering the scale 601.

Equipment / Items

  • King Ghidorah’s golden scale — A face-sized, heavy scale bearing fine golden patterns. Redd gives it to Douglas as the means to command Demon Dragons; Douglas keeps it inside his breastplate 588 589 601.
  • Sword — Used during the Pentos ambush, where Douglas kills at least twenty attackers 590.
  • Armor and helmet — Worn during his military operations; his breastplate also provides a protected place for orders and the golden scale 554 588 591.
  • Maps, inventories, and dispatches — Regular working tools for navigation, supply accounting, requisitions, and military administration 404 554 560.

Relationships

  • Redd — Patron and sovereign. Douglas owes his rise to Redd and repeatedly declares his loyalty, while fearing how easily Redd could remove his authority or kill him. Redd later considers him the most loyal of Douglas, Theora, and Marcus 183 454 600 603.
  • Jasent — Early colleague in securing and administering Stone Island. Douglas’s deduction about the hidden Faceless Man leads Jasent to order an identification sweep among the slaves 183 220.
  • Theora — Administrative counterpart. Her warnings inform Douglas of growing shortages; he later suspects that she deliberately allowed military power to accumulate in his hands to expose him to Redd’s suspicion 561 602 603.
  • Marcus — Financial counterpart and source of reports about unrest. Douglas comes to suspect that Marcus and Theora cooperated in making him the conspicuous holder of military authority, though this remains his interpretation 561 602 603.
  • Daemon — Enemy during the Lys campaign. Douglas investigates his movements, pursues his forces, and later binds him after Redd orders that he be kept alive and prevented from escaping 394 410 443 444.
  • Red God Church — Initially tolerated as a tax-paying religious organization. Douglas becomes its persecutor on Redd’s orders and is ambushed by its believers in cooperation with Pentos’s Magistrate 588 590.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Service and the Rise to Fleet Command

Douglas’s early responsibilities include organizing labor, overseeing production, and supporting security on Stone Island. His duties also extend to the Dragonpit: Redd orders him to arrange chains strong enough to restrain Grey Ghost and to supply livestock for the dragons to hunt without Dragonkeepers 183 204.

Redd offers him responsibility for assembling a fleet if he successfully completes a confidential assignment. Douglas subsequently helps expose the Faceless Man’s hiding method and participates in Redd’s internal purge in Pentos, where his proclamation of Redd as the “Dragon God” rallies the soldiers 212 220 230.

His expanding responsibilities bring him into naval discipline, public health, and strategic intelligence. He reports resistance among the Sealord’s crews, warns Redd against approaching greyscale sufferers, and urges the removal of a vast gold hoard before rival powers can intervene. Redd stops him from touching the gold after discovering its cursed nature 237 247 261.

The Lys Campaign

After a clash with the Lysene fleet, Douglas fears punishment for failure. Redd instead praises him for preserving his men during a fighting withdrawal. Douglas then searches the Stepstones and uncovers Daemon’s connection to the black-robed figures accompanying him to Lys 392 393 394 395.

At Lys, Douglas urges an attack from the less-defended north rather than through the narrow main channel. Redd rejects the advice, and Douglas carries out the frontal approach despite his misgivings. The fleet suffers devastating ballista fire before reaching the docks, where Douglas leads the landing and directs the advance into the city 404 406 407 408 410 411.

Douglas survives the palace explosions with severe burns, smoke damage, and limb injuries. Daemon and Tormund destroy Redd’s fleet, but Douglas later reaches Redd with several surviving soldiers and takes custody of the captured Daemon. After the victory, Redd assigns him to count survivors, repair usable ships, and salvage the rest before their departure 423 424 426 443 444 452.

The Valyrian Expedition and Reconstruction

Douglas coordinates the expedition’s supplies through Volantis, warning when grain deliveries fall short and when the Demon Dragon Legion’s meat reserves approach exhaustion. In the field, he oversees defenses, watches the encroaching black fog, maintains formations during withdrawals, and gathers personnel and supply tallies after battle 522 531 533 545 548 554.

For Valyria’s reconstruction, he estimates five years to complete the main structures; Redd tells him to aim for three. Douglas also filters alarming correspondence about grain shortages, protests, ration disputes, and fleeing laborers, reporting logistical difficulties without conveying the full severity of the unrest 561.

When Redd demands higher taxes, Douglas promises to seek another solution. He obtains permission to use more than a dozen Demon Dragons against the Dothraki, while the rebuilding effort also requires requisitioned Valyrian steel and craftsmen capable of reforging it 578 585.

Purge of the Red God Church

Questioned about the Church, Douglas admits that its representatives approached him but denies accepting their religion. He explains that he had tolerated its activities because it paid taxes. Satisfied that Douglas is truthful, Redd grants him the golden scale and fifty Demon Dragons, ordering the eradication of the Church and its believers throughout the Free Cities 588.

Douglas begins with Pentos, intending to seize the Magistrate and use him to locate hidden followers. Instead, the Magistrate and Church ambush him and a hundred guards. He escapes through his advance preparations, but nearly all the guards who entered the city are killed or wounded. By the following dawn, fire has destroyed nearly a third of Pentos’s buildings 590 591.

He subsequently directs the wider purge from Volantis, working more than twenty hours a day. To impose obedience on the slave army, he orders nearly twenty thousand defiant slaves killed and buried while Demon Dragons stand guard. He then installs trusted officers, disperses soldiers of questionable loyalty, and centralizes military reporting 593 594.

Redd’s Warning and the Limits of Authority

Douglas’s accumulated command eventually includes over a hundred thousand troops, several hundred warships, half the Demon Dragon Legion, and seventy percent of the Nine Free Cities’ troops. Redd confronts him with a quiet question: whether he would betray him. Douglas kneels and declares his loyalty, then realizes that the danger lies not in proven treachery but in his capacity to rebel 600 602.

Afterward, Douglas recognizes that the golden scale is only borrowed authority and that Redd can revoke the dragons’ obedience at will. He also suspects Theora and Marcus deliberately let him concentrate military power so that he would become the target of Redd’s scrutiny 601 602.

By the next account of the Free Cities, Douglas manages armies and military operations, Theora handles administration, and Marcus oversees finances and taxation. Their coordination restores trade and stabilizes Redd’s rule after the Church purge 603.
