Power Progression
These records document individual transformations and later improvements observed across Redd’s dragons.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult Demon Dragon — Ehm | 10 | At 191 years old, Ehm measures 130 meters long, with a 370-meter wingspan. The panel identifies the black dragon as female and records a cursed status. |
| Aged Demon Dragon — Aegon | 22 | At 211 years old, Aegon measures 150 meters long, with a 430-meter wingspan. The system reports fewer than nine years remaining before his normal maximum lifespan. |
| Titan Demon Dragon — Aegon | 109 | His panel records 160 meters in length, a 510-meter wingspan, and an age range of 213–∞. He is unconscious, while his radiated heat melts the surrounding snow and ice. |
| Titan Demon Dragon — Ehm | 185 | Completes an automatic, painful transformation. At 195 years old, Ehm measures 166 meters long, with a 500-meter wingspan and an age range of 195–∞. Defensive strength increases enough to make Scorpions largely ineffective. |
| Enhanced growth in the Fourteen Flames | 596 | Both subadults and adults grow larger and stronger. Geothermal absorption improves scales, wings, bones, carrying capacity, and dragonfire; hatchling-to-adult development takes less than half the time required on Dragonstone. |
Biology and Appearance
- Scaled bodies: Colors include black, crimson, brown, green, and gray. Ehm has a broad head, sharp bone spurs, leathery wings, and prominent back spines 9 10 21 197 539.
- Extreme size: Large specimens exceed 100 meters in length, with wingspans of several hundred meters 10 22.
- Internal heat: Their blood is hot enough to scorch Sandworms when spilled. Titan Aegon radiates sufficient heat to melt extensive surrounding ice and snow 109 539.
- Environment-dependent development: Dragons raised near Valyria’s lava rivers develop harder scales and greater size than those nesting farther from the hot zones 596.
Life Cycle
Ancient texts describe the following general growth pattern. Exceptional dragons can exceed these measurements and longevity expectations 68.
| Life stage | Typical size | Development |
|---|---|---|
| Infancy | Under 10 meters long | Earliest growth stage 68. |
| Subadult | Within 30 meters long | Growth remains rapid 68. |
| Adult | Can reach 50 meters long | Growth slows significantly 68. |
| Prime | Can exceed 100 meters long | Peak size and strength; this stage lasts approximately 120–150 years 68. |
| Old age | Around 120 meters long | Size generally stabilizes; this stage lasts approximately 30–60 years 68. |
| Twilight years | No separate measurement given | Declining final stage, usually leaving 20–30 years of life 68. |
Habitat and Diet
- Volcanic energy: Demon Dragons absorb geothermal energy through their scales and convert it into reserves. The Fourteen Flames combine heat, magical fields, mineral veins, and active lava channels into a particularly favorable habitat 596.
- Growth rate: On Dragonstone, reaching adulthood takes more than ten years. On the Valyrian Peninsula, the same process takes less than half that time and produces larger, stronger adults 596.
- Food consumption: Dragons swallow meat and bone together and require substantial supplies. Legion feeding demands place pressure on Redd’s stores 555.
- Human prey: Redd does not remove humans from his dragons’ diet. During raids, they eat both horses and people 581.
Intelligence and Behavior
Newly hatched dragons develop particular trust and attachment toward the person who hatches them. Redd compares their early intelligence to that of puppies. Intelligence increases with age, while the first rider strongly influences a dragon’s disposition and its later preferences when accepting another rider. Consequently, an adult is much harder to tame than a hatchling 227.
Titan transformation noticeably increases Aegon’s and Ehm’s intelligence. Both can interpret simple orders and complete missions without a rider continuously directing them 222.
Behavior depends heavily on hierarchy and familiarity. Redd’s dragons lower their heads, lie flat, and approach him for attention, yet may regard unfamiliar workers as potential food without clear signals from Redd or King Ghidorah. Under organized command, they can feed alongside one another without fighting and perform coordinated labor 555 581 600.
Abilities and Skills
Dragonfire
Their principal ranged weapon burns troops, ships, buildings, and terrain 224 424 536.
- Aegon and Ehm unleash crimson and black dragonfire during their attack on Braavos 224.
- Legion attacks create persistent burning zones that disrupt enemy movement and prevent reinforcements from assembling 536 542.
- Dragonfire melts rock into glass and cuts smooth surfaces through stone 581.
- Ehm’s concentrated dark red beam carbonizes orcs and breaks large rocks with explosive force 542 581.
- Dragons raised in the Fourteen Flames produce hotter, broader, more destructive fire. Some develop flames containing faint gold or dark red streaks associated with thunderstorms and geothermal heat 596.
Flight and Physical Strength
Their mobility allows rapid attacks across multiple ground positions, while their size supports heavy transport and demolition 537 581.
- Flying dragons easily overtake Dothraki horses 578.
- Claws and tails move massive rocks, clear rubble, and transport cut stone through widened underground passages 581 583.
- Smaller dragons have lower speed and endurance; the legion assigns weaker individuals to rear formations and covering duties 538.
Scaled Defenses
Protection varies substantially with age, transformation, and the weapon used.
- Dothraki bows cannot penetrate the attacking dragons’ scales 578.
- Adult Titan Dragons Aegon and Ehm withstand Braavos’s dense bolt volleys, with impacts producing sparks against their scales 224.
- Aegon survives a prepared heavy-ballista ambush without penetration. The strikes still cause dents, pain, and a brief loss of aerial stability 282.
Coordinated Operations
Redd’s legion can function without a separate rider for each dragon.
- King Ghidorah’s Group Control coordinates positions and readiness without visible commands 530.
- Ehm’s authority allows it to direct subadult dragons in daily hauling and demolition work 586.
- Adult instructors teach newly arrived young dragons to fly, hunt, and navigate Valyria’s environment 596.
- Command gestures allow Douglas to assemble and direct authorized dragons after they recognize his golden scale 589.
Weaknesses and Limits
| Threat or limitation | Documented effect |
|---|---|
| Improved giant ballistae | Rhaenys reports that an improved weapon wounded Meleys and could drive a bolt through a Demon Dragon’s head at long range 249. |
| Heavy bolts against vulnerable areas | Half-orc ballistae pierce wings, necks, and chests. Some dragons fall with broken wings; others lose the ability to move before reaching the ground 565. |
| Sandworm ambushes | Sandworm teeth penetrate subadult scales. Their greater weight prevents seized dragons from escaping as they are dragged underground 539. |
| Other powerful dragons | Ehm suffers scorched scales and a torn wing membrane while fighting a crimson fire dragon of comparable size 565. |
| Fatigue and landing exposure | Smaller returning dragons are slower to climb away from an underground attack after descending toward camp 538 539. |
| Maintenance and control | Riderless dragons consume large quantities of food and risk becoming uncontrollable without a reliable command system 583. |
History and Deployment
Valyrian and Targaryen Power
Dragons are the foundation of House Targaryen’s military authority. Jaehaerys fears that allowing outsiders to tame or hatch them would undermine the dynasty’s monopoly, and orders Daemon to prevent Redd from approaching the family’s dragons 66 216.
Redd establishes a different model: a growing force of dragons directed through himself, King Ghidorah, and subordinate commanders rather than a strict one-rider-per-dragon arrangement 530 588.
Conquest of Essos
Aegon and Ehm devastate Braavos, destroying the Sealord’s Palace and the House of Black and White. They later kill people attempting to flee as Redd enters the surrendered city 224 234.
Aegon subsequently supports Marcus’s northern campaign. Redd also assigns dragons to territorial defense, ordering Sheepstealer and Ehm to protect Volantis against Myr and Lys, and later stationing Aegon and Ehm there as safeguards against invasion and rebellion 278 286 299.
Valyrian Expedition
Most of the dragons leave Dragonmont under King Ghidorah’s leadership, while selected individuals remain to guard children and eggs. On the Valyrian Peninsula, the legion burns away monsters and black-mist-covered terrain around Redd’s camp 516 530 537.
The expedition exposes the legion to serious losses. Sandworms drag several subadults underground despite King Ghidorah’s intervention, and a later assault leaves dragons fallen beneath heavy ballista fire 539 565.
Reconstruction and Expansion
Demon Dragons help rebuild Valyria by hauling stone, excavating the Underground Dragonpit, and uncovering ore deposits. Their participation cuts a project originally expected to take three years by at least half 581.
Redd later expands breeding around the Fourteen Flames, bringing additional eggs and young dragons from Dragonstone. Adults adapted to Valyria train the newcomers, while Ehm oversees patrols and training 596.
Notable Individuals and Commanders
- Ehm — Redd’s black dragon companion; becomes a Titan Demon Dragon and later directs construction, patrols, and training 10 185 586 596.
- Aegon — Crimson dragon initially nearing his natural lifespan limit; becomes a Titan Demon Dragon and later guards dragon eggs, young dragons, Jaehaerys, and Visenya on Dragonstone 22 109 577.
- Sheepstealer — Brown dragon called the “Mud Dragon,” subdued by King Ghidorah and later assigned defensive and egg-guarding duties 197 286 516.
- Cannibal — Aggressive dragon notorious for eating dragon remains, young dragons, and eggs; later stays with Redd’s children alongside Aegon 69 516.
- King Ghidorah — Three-headed leader of the Demon Dragon Legion. Its Group Control and loyalty to Redd underpin the legion’s command hierarchy 530 601.
- Redd — Breeder and ultimate authority over the legion; can override delegated commands through King Ghidorah 596 601.
- Douglas — Receives permission to command fifty dragons through a golden scale. Uses them in religious purges and to enforce obedience among slave troops, but his authority remains revocable 588 589 594 601.
