|---|---|---|
| Considerable cultivation increase; realm unspecified | 34 | Completely refines the Phoenix Fire Spirit Pill forced upon him by Lin Qingyang. His injuries heal, and his cultivation increases considerably 27 34. |
Appearance
Mo Yan is tall and muscular, with rugged features, a somewhat dark complexion, and a stern expression that makes him appear particularly fierce 2.
- Usual clothing: Black-and-red robes 2 143.
- Travel disguise: Uses a bamboo hat and black face covering when visiting the Hidden Market 143.
- Demon Emperor City disguise: Temporarily wears a necklace that gives him a black panther’s head, along with laborers’ clothing; this is a disguise rather than his natural form 181 182.
Personality
Mo Yan is quick-tempered, blunt, and deeply concerned with sect discipline and dignity. He criticizes Lin Qingyang’s idleness, appearance, and public behavior, and instructs younger disciples not to disgrace the Nine Skies Sect. His own austere hall contains ordinary furniture without decorative calligraphy, paintings, or ornaments 2 11 26 93 94.
His early hostility toward demons leads him to treat suspicion as proof. He tortures Qi Mo over Shi Ruobai’s poisoning, reasoning that Qi Mo’s identity as a demon and access to the sect leader’s room establish his guilt. Lin Qingyang’s challenge to this reasoning leaves him visibly hesitant, though it does not immediately remove his prejudice 2 3 4.
Despite his rigidity, Mo Yan repeatedly puts himself at risk for people he cares about. He protects Hong Ling, tries to help Jin Buhuan escape persecution, and pleads for Lin Qingyang’s life after learning of his involvement in the poisoning. His loyalties eventually extend beyond the human–demon divide, allowing him to support peace negotiations and fight beside demon allies 72 117 127 195 317.
He is much less comfortable expressing affection than anger. Hong Ling’s gratitude and flirtation leave him flustered, while Lin Qingyang’s impending death drives him to weep privately rather than break down at his bedside 108 232 281.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Manipulation
Mo Yan channels lightning through his hands and the Thunderclap Mace for direct attacks, wide-area strikes, and protection 3 24 45 275.
- Fires successive lightning bolts at individual opponents 24.
- Sends electricity spreading across the ground to strike surrounding enemies 45.
- Condenses a massive lightning ball capable of flattening half a courtyard 183.
- Forms an overhead lightning net that pulverizes falling boulders 275.
- Uses repeated lightning strikes to cover an escape from Jiuchen 311.
- Limit: Xue Lanyuan’s extreme cold freezes his lightning and turns it into ice spikes that strike him in return 314.
Lightning Movement and Flight
Mo Yan can transform into a bolt or streak of lightning to travel rapidly, evade attacks, and reposition in battle 4 14 183.
- Appears behind Ba Shan after vanishing from his original position 183.
- Retreats into an active teleportation array immediately after providing covering fire 311.
- Can hover and fight in midair 30.
Fire Cultivation
Mo Yan practices fire magic. The Phoenix Fire Spirit Pill is especially compatible with his cultivation, providing both healing and a substantial increase in spiritual power after refinement 27 34.
Spiritual Power Control
Beyond combat, Mo Yan uses spiritual power for restraints, treatment, and practical sect duties 53 127 130.
- Transfers spiritual power into the critically injured Hong Ling 53.
- Seals the Heavenly Strategy Hall’s doors with spiritual power 127.
- Removes shackles restricting Lin Qingyang’s spiritual power 130.
- Limit: Dense demonic qi causes him severe distress and vomiting of blood, requiring treatment from Jin Buhuan 80 82.
Arrays and Infiltration
Mo Yan can operate teleportation arrays and recognize their construction, while also using mundane disguises and stealth when direct confrontation is impractical 43 71 182 253.
- Activates the Ten-Thousand-Li Tianyan Array and changes a teleportation array’s destination during departure 43 71.
- Recognizes the ferryboat’s Water-Riding Array 253.
- Infiltrates the Demon King’s palace using a memorized map, stolen guard equipment, and silent takedowns 182.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Thunderclap Mace — A long bronze mace surrounded by electricity. His principal weapon, used for close combat, lightning barrages, and defensive techniques 24 45 183 275.
- Qiankun Bag — Storage equipment in which Hong Ling secretly hides while following him to Liuxian Island. Mo Yan later carries a fragment recovered from Cang Yu’s remains in it; the fragment is drawn out when the Nine Heavens Sword reassembles 94 275.
- Phoenix Fire Spirit Pill — A rare medicine refined by Yanlie Zhenren. Mo Yan had previously offered a fortune for Lin Qingyang’s pill, but only receives it when Lin forces him to swallow it as leverage for Qi Mo’s protection 27.
- Transformation necklace — Temporarily gives him a panther-headed appearance while moving through Demon Emperor City 181 182.
- Message talisman — Gives one to Lin Qingyang before leaving Demon Emperor City 175.
History
Original Novel’s Intended Events
According to Lin Yao’s account of the original novel, Qi Mo was supposed to stop breathing under Mo Yan’s brutal interrogation and be discarded at the Mass Burial Mound. His demon king bloodline would revive him, after which he would unite the Demon Clan and destroy the Nine Skies Sect in revenge. Lin Qingyang’s intervention prevents the interrogation from following that course 3 6.
The accusation that Mo Yan poisoned Shi Ruobai is not an established fact. Lin Qingyang initially uses it to demonstrate the danger of baseless accusations, then encourages Xue Lanyuan to watch Mo Yan to divert suspicion from himself. The original poisoning plot instead involved the previous owner of Lin Qingyang’s body 3 5 6 15.
Qi Mo’s Interrogation and the Antidote
Mo Yan first appears among the Nine Skies Sect elders overseeing the investigation into Shi Ruobai’s poisoning. He insists that Qi Mo is responsible and attempts to force a confession until Lin Qingyang intervenes. After the interrogation is halted, he orders Lei Guang and Lei Chen to imprison Qi Mo in the Forbidden Abyss 2 3 4.
Later, Mo Yan secretly observes Lin Qingyang and Qi Mo leaving through the Back Mountain teleportation array. At Greenstone Mountain, Chimei accuses Lin Qingyang of obtaining poison to kill Shi Ruobai. Mo Yan attacks Lin Qingyang and Qi Mo, but is bitten and poisoned when Lin throws the snake demon at him 22 24.
Learning that Lin Qingyang brought back the antidote convinces Mo Yan that he misunderstood the situation. Their quarrel nevertheless continues over Qi Mo’s treatment. Lin Qingyang forces him to swallow the Phoenix Fire Spirit Pill and threatens to expose him for accepting a bribe if he refuses to show leniency; refining the pill later heals Mo Yan and strengthens his cultivation 26 27 34.
Wasteland Town and Hong Ling
Mo Yan accompanies Lin Qingyang and Qi Mo to Wasteland Town for work involving the Xuanhuang Sect. Their confrontation with Cen Yue escalates into a battle with sect disciples, and Mo Yan subsequently becomes involved in saving the injured fox demon Hong Ling 42 44 45 53.
The Xuanhuang Sect imprisons Mo Yan and Lin Qingyang with collars that restrict their freedom. During the ensuing escape and pursuit, Hong Ling impersonates Lin Qingyang to draw searchers away from Mo Yan. Mo Yan later protects the injured fox from Kong Qin by warning that killing him would create an irreconcilable feud 59 71 72.
After being displayed in a prison cart as bait for Lin Qingyang, Mo Yan escapes during the fighting in Wasteland Town. He and Hong Ling briefly shelter alongside Hua Jin and Kong Qin, agreeing to lower their improvised weapons. Wu Ze later captures both Mo Yan and Qi Mo and demands that Lin Qingyang choose which one should live; Xue Lanyuan and Jin Buhuan interrupt the execution and rescue them 76 77 78 82.
Growing Attachments and Sect Loyalty
Hong Ling follows Mo Yan back to the Nine Skies Sect and secretly accompanies him to Liuxian Island inside his Qiankun Bag. Mo Yan reluctantly lets him stay after hearing about his nightmares of Jin Yao Workshop, but requires him to remain an ordinary fox in public 88 94.
Their closeness begins to affect Mo Yan’s cultivation. After he kills a pheasant for Hong Ling, the fox kisses his cheek in gratitude. That night, thoughts of Hong Ling distract him during meditation and send his spiritual power into disorder 108.
Mo Yan also defends Jin Buhuan when other Immortal Sect disciples identify him as a demon creature. He tries to lead him away, then holds the Thunderclap Mace ready when their path is blocked. Although unwilling to abandon Jin Buhuan, he hesitates to begin a battle that could kill disciples and turn the sects into permanent enemies 117.
Shi Ruobai’s Transformation and the Sect’s Collapse
After Shi Ruobai returns to activity, Mo Yan strengthens the sect’s defenses following the attack on Qi Mo. He later confronts Lin Qingyang about the poisoning and initially doubts his warning that Shi Ruobai carries demonic qi. Even so, he privately asks Shi Ruobai to spare Lin Qingyang, citing his efforts to make amends and his importance to the sect 123 125 126 127.
When Shi Ruobai transforms into an Otherworldly Demon, Mo Yan finally witnesses the truth. He frees Lin Qingyang from his spiritual-power-restricting shackles and joins the fight with lightning attacks 129 130.
Following Shi Ruobai’s death, Mo Yan angrily challenges Lei Chen and other disciples who intend to leave for the Myriad Spirits Sect. Lin Qingyang allows them to depart despite his objections. Mo Yan later finds Lin Qingyang gravely wounded near Tianshui City, recognizes that a Heaven-Stealing Talisman is temporarily keeping him alive, and arranges urgent treatment 132 142.
The Hidden Market and Peace Negotiations
Five years later, Mo Yan visits Lin Qingyang at the Hidden Market and questions his efforts to prevent war through trade with the Demon Clan. During their investigation of the Red Refining Sect massacre, both oppose the proposed slaughter of enslaved fire salamanders despite accusations against them 143 144 146 148.
Still distrustful of Cang Mo, Mo Yan attempts to extract Lin Qingyang from Demon Emperor City. His palace infiltration succeeds initially, but Hong Ling—whom he has not seen for five years—orders the guards to seize him. Mo Yan defeats numerous soldiers and knocks Ba Shan through a rockery before Cang Mo overwhelms and captures him 175 182 183.
By this period, Mo Yan is an elder of the Myriad Spirits Sect. Lin Qingyang secures his release as part of a peace initiative and sends him to the Immortal Alliance with Cang Mo’s proposal. Mo Yan delivers both the offer of negotiations and Lin Qingyang’s declaration that he is staying with Cang Mo voluntarily, removing his supposed captivity as a justification for war 192 195.
The Hidden Market Crisis
During the negotiations, Mo Yan tries to prevent a clash between the human delegates and Langya’s demons. He investigates the poisoned arrow that strikes Ba Shan and narrowly avoids a poisoned dagger wielded by “Elder Chen,” who is exposed as a wooden puppet in Bi Yue’s scheme 211 213.
Mo Yan fights Otherworldly Demons during the ensuing battle. After Lin Qingyang defeats Bi Yue, he learns that the Ku Rong Tree Seed powering Lin’s restored abilities has consumed nearly all his remaining lifespan. Told that Lin has at most a month to live, Mo Yan leaves the sickroom and sobs alone on the rooftop 227 229 232.
He subsequently helps conceal Lin Qingyang’s condition from the departing Immortal Alliance delegation and reports its agreement to release demon slaves and maintain mutual nonaggression 233.
The Nirvana Lotus and Xue Lanyuan’s Return
Mo Yan joins the journey to the Jade Capital and the search involving the Nirvana Lotus. He helps the group through hostile encounters, shields them from falling debris during Cang Mo’s battle with Lu Qing, and witnesses fragments of the Nine Heavens Sword reassemble 253 263 274 275.
After returning, he brings news that a Myriad Spirits Sect disciple was killed by an ice spike. The group confirms that it bears Xue Lanyuan’s spiritual power. Mo Yan joins the investigation and later works with Jin Buhuan to destroy remnants of the Corpse-Blood Tai Sui while searching for her 286 288 297.
Final Battles and Rebuilding
Mo Yan attacks Jiuchen with lightning to cover Jin Buhuan’s rescue of Lin Qingyang, Yun Zhan, and Su Ruohuan. In Tianxuan Pavilion’s secret realm, his attack on Xue Lanyuan is frozen and reflected back at him, piercing his abdomen and freezing half his body 311 314.
He survives to join Cang Mo and Langya in attacking Jiuchen’s red barrier. Jiuchen’s sword qi hurls him into the ground, and the expanding array’s pressure further injures him. He later witnesses Lin Qingyang’s return, rising with the support of his mace 317 318 320.
Once peace is restored, Mo Yan resigns as a Myriad Spirits Sect elder. With scattered disciples wishing to return and new cultivators seeking admission following news of Xue Lanyuan’s ascension, he asks Lin Qingyang to lead a rebuilt Nine Skies Sect 322.
Relationships

- Hong Ling — A fox demon toward whom Mo Yan develops romantic feelings. Initially rejected, Hong Ling becomes his persistent companion; Mo Yan protects him and is later confronted with Hong Ling’s reminder that he promised to like him regardless of appearance 60 72 108 281.
- Qi Mo / Cang Mo — Initially his interrogation victim and a frequent adversary. Their hostility continues after Qi Mo becomes Demon King, especially over Lin Qingyang, though they eventually cooperate against shared enemies 2 183 287 317.
- Jin Buhuan — Fellow Nine Skies Sect elder whom he refuses to surrender to hostile sects. Mo Yan later bitterly reproaches him for faking his death and leaving their former sect behind 117 192.
