First Appearance Chapter 2 2

Appearance

  • Usual appearance: A youthful man with delicate features and a scholarly bearing, introduced wearing a golden outer robe and gently waving a folding fan 2.
  • Hair and dress: Commonly presents himself with black hair. After his release from the Limitless Platform, he changes his long pale-gold hair into neatly arranged black hair crowned with gold, while wearing gold-and-white robes 184 263.
  • Revealed demon appearance: Golden pupils, loose golden hair, and a golden lotus-shaped forehead mark, accompanied by dense demonic qi 115.
  • True form: A glittering golden turtle, seen while he is held at the Limitless Platform 260.
  • Disguises: Later appears as a tall woman whose softened features remain recognizable to Feng Yi 288.

Personality

Jin Buhuan is openly money-minded, turning artifact loans, compensation payments, and even accidental use of a dangerous treasure into charges against Lin Qingyang. His complaints are not entirely frivolous: Golden Spirit Court supports the sect’s daily expenses, and he resents the original Lin Qingyang collecting an elder’s stipend for ten years without performing his duties 12 19 41 104.

His refined manners conceal an appetite for gossip and teasing. He speculates freely about Lin Qingyang and Qi Mo, is astonished by Mo Yan’s apparent proposal to Hong Ling, and secretly records an intimate moment between Lin Qingyang and Cang Mo. He can nevertheless recognize when a conversation is unwelcome and stop pressing for details 27 41 193 280.

He is capable of calculated deception and violence. He hides his demonic identity, restrains Lin Qingyang after being discovered, and wounds Qi Mo to draw power for his illusion realm. During his revenge at Starshift Palace, his usual genial expression gives way to cold ruthlessness 111 112 115.

His concern for his former companions persists after leaving the Nine Skies Sect. He investigates the Nirvana Lotus for Lin Qingyang, repeatedly checks his fate, and refuses to accept killing Xue Lanyuan as the solution to her attacks 265 297 314.

Background

Jin Buhuan joined the Nine Skies Sect before both Lin Qingyang and Shi Ruobai and knew about their earlier contest for the sect leadership. He later tells Lin Qingyang that he became an elder because his family donated the Treasure Pavilion to the sect 27 30.

As the elder overseeing Golden Spirit Court, he handled the sect’s finances and access to its stored treasures. By the time Lin Qingyang became acting sect leader, declining rental income and rising expenses had left the Nine Skies Sect dependent on loans from the Myriad Spirits Sect’s Money House 12 19 42.

Behind his identity as a human sect elder, Jin Buhuan carried a grievance dating back five hundred years. He sought justice for his turtle-demon clan, insisting that his people had harmed no one and should never have suffered their fate 118.

Abilities & Skills

Illusion Realms

Jin Buhuan creates and controls large-scale illusion realms capable of deceiving cultivators and suppressing their ability to resist 111.

  • Environmental fabrication: Recreates Liuxian Island with artificial worshippers who continue their actions even when struck through the body 111.
  • Power suppression: The island illusion progressively weakens its occupants’ Spiritual Power. Jin Buhuan can also prevent Lin Qingyang from summoning power while restraining him 111.
  • Illusory doubles and identities: Leaves a seated duplicate of himself while appearing elsewhere as Wang Wu 113 115.
  • Prison realms: Creates an illusion matching the surrounding battlefield inside a pearl to trap Xue Lanyuan without killing her 314.
  • Limits: Maintaining the island-sized realm requires substantial power. The pearl prison also fails when he no longer has enough Spiritual Power to sustain it 112 321.

Divination and Intuition

Turtle demons possess an innate sensitivity to fortune and misfortune, which Jin Buhuan supplements with formal divination 297.

  • Uses a tortoise shell, hand seals, golden light, and an incantation to examine a fate chart 297.
  • Advises Lin Qingyang to remain beside Cang Mo for protection 193.

  • Does not possess complete foreknowledge: he explicitly distinguishes his divinations from knowing everything that will happen 178.

Golden Barriers and Bubbles

Jin Buhuan uses golden light and bubbles for defense, transport, and searching 118 280 297 314.

  • Defense: Blocks Lin Qingyang’s attack with a golden barrier and shelters companions from Xue Lanyuan’s cold inside a translucent bubble 112 314.
  • Transport: Sends Lin Qingyang, Qi Mo, and Mo Yan toward the Ten-Thousand-Li Tianyan Array in golden enclosures; later carries the group through an opening blasted into Headless Mountain 118 280.
  • Recovery and rescue: Lifts Ku Rong’s headless body and pulls companions out of a collapsing frozen lake 280 314.

  • Limits: Xue Lanyuan’s cold can freeze and shatter his protective bubble 314.

  • Combines the Fire Luan Bells and Phoenix-Cry Fan to engulf the monster in flame 31.
  • Uses crossbow bolts to freeze its lower body, then a drum to call lightning and shatter its frozen tail 31.

  • Recognizes the Corpse-Blood Tai Sui and explains its mutation through consuming corpses, blood, and resentment 292.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Golden Spirit Court and the Sect’s Finances

Jin Buhuan charges Lin Qingyang three hundred Spirit Stones to use a Demon-Capturing Net and another five hundred as a refundable deposit. He openly admits targeting Lin because of his years of neglected duties. After Lin accidentally activates the Bewitching-Heart Jade, Jin adds a further hundred-stone charge 19.

When the Lei Guang–Chimei monster attacks the mountain gate, Jin initially leaves to find a solution, then returns with enough offensive artifacts to destroy it. The torn Demon-Capturing Net costs Lin his deposit 30 31 37.

Jin also manages Qi Mo’s proposed sale back to Hua Jin. When Lin Qingyang intervenes with a five-thousand-stone offer, Jin invites Hua Jin to bid higher, completes the transaction, and helps adjust Qi Mo’s Demon-Locking Ring. Later, he presents the Xuanhuang Sect’s five-hundred-thousand-stone demon-extermination commission as a way to relieve the Nine Skies Sect’s financial crisis 37 39 42.

Revenge at Starshift Palace

During the Immortal Alliance Ceremony, Jin accompanies the Nine Skies Sect party while secretly controlling the illusion surrounding Liuxian Island. Lin Qingyang discovers the deception, prompting Jin to restrain him and absorb some of Qi Mo’s Demonic Power to maintain the realm 89 111 112.

Through the Wang Wu guise, Jin exposes Lord Diviner’s fraudulent ascension, which had been staged using illusions from the Heavenly Tortoise Shell. He then reveals his own demonic appearance, brings destructive fireballs down upon the gathering, and carries out his revenge against Tianheng and Miao Xing 114 115 116.

When the assembled sects demand his capture, Lin Qingyang defends him despite the consequences for the Nine Skies Sect. Jin kills Tie Xing, reveals that he has altered the celestial signs to bring a tsunami, and begins turning to stone. Before Lin can use the Heaven-Stealing Talisman on him, Jin sends Lin, Qi Mo, and Mo Yan to safety. Liuxian Island is submerged, and Jin is believed dead 116 117 118.

Return as the Sea Tribe’s High Priest

Five years later, Lin Qingyang recognizes Jin at a banquet in Demon Emperor City. Jin explains that he staged his death because escaping the Immortal Alliance after killing so many people would otherwise have been difficult. He has since become the Sea Tribe’s high priest and attends on the Sea King’s behalf to discuss an alliance—not a marriage arrangement 177 178.

His reunion with his former companions is affectionate but contentious. Mo Yan resents his years of silence, while Lin Qingyang is furious when Jin helps Cang Mo stop his attempted departure. Jin later explains that Lin’s fatal calamity remains and urges him to stay near Cang Mo 184 192 193.

Search for the Nirvana Lotus

At Cang Mo’s private request, Jin researches the Nirvana Lotus and traces a five-hundred-year-old appearance to the Jade Capital. He loses a wager while seeking further information from the Divine Jade Immortal Venerable and sends an illusion asking his companions to rescue him from the Limitless Platform, where he is held in turtle form 250 255 260 265.

After his release, Jin travels with the group toward the Demon Clan’s territory and joins the search in Cang Yu’s tomb. He helps evacuate everyone from the collapsing mountain after the lotus is recovered. During the journey, Mo Yan invites him to become a Nine Skies Sect elder again; Jin answers that it depends on the salary 263 264 266 270 280.

Xue Lanyuan and the Unresolved Death Tribulation

Jin recognizes Xue Lanyuan’s Spiritual Power in the ice spike that killed a Myriad Spirits Sect disciple. After finding her alive, he explains that demonic qi has erased her memories and emotions. He also identifies the Corpse-Blood Tai Sui threatening the region 288 291 292 293.

While searching for Xue Lanyuan with Mo Yan, Jin divines Lin Qingyang’s fate again. His tortoise shell cracks, and he discovers that Lin’s death tribulation persists despite his earlier death and the Nirvana Lotus rebuilding his spiritual root 297.

In the Tianxuan Pavilion secret realm, Jin rejects a plan that would kill Xue Lanyuan and instead follows Lin Qingyang’s suggestion to imprison her in an illusion pearl. The prison holds until an array drains his Spiritual Power; the pearl then cracks and shatters 314 321.
