Background
Yun Zhan grew up hearing Jian Hong speak about Lin Qingyang and compare the two of them. These comparisons fostered his ambition to test himself against the celebrated swordsman 110.
In the original novel’s backstory, Yun Zhan won first place at the Immortal Alliance Ceremony, rose to fame, and became Divine Sword Mountain’s youngest elder. The altered storyline diverges from that outcome: he loses to Lin Qingyang and later refuses an appointment that would have made him the sect’s youngest elder 89 117 204.
Appearance
Yun Zhan is a handsome young man with cool, aloof features. After five years apart, Lin Qingyang observes that his earlier boyish awkwardness has disappeared, replaced by steady composure and the beginnings of a grandmaster’s bearing 92 220.
- Clothing: Usually wears spotless, snow-white swordsman’s robes; later appears in sect-leader robes 92 195 322.
- Bearing: Stands straight as a pine and sits with a rigidly upright posture 236 237.
- Presence: His cold, sharp Sword Intent can clear space around him in a crowded street 236.
Personality
Yun Zhan is formal and courteous despite his aloof appearance. He greets senior cultivators respectfully, declines Lin Qingyang’s deferential address, and does not underestimate Wang Wu merely because he is an independent cultivator. His concern for fair conduct also makes him object to accepting a Star Radiance Stone he did not obtain himself 93 99 100 113.
Proud and intensely devoted to swordsmanship, he initially regards surpassing Lin Qingyang as an obsession. Defeat drives him into years of secluded training rather than away from the Sword Dao. After witnessing Heavenly Execution, however, he openly acknowledges Lin Qingyang’s superior attainment and abandons his earlier expectation of surpassing him 110 204 237.
His loyalty to Divine Sword Mountain eventually conflicts with his commitment to justice. He condemns Lu Qing’s attempt to frame Cang Mo, invoking the sect’s rules against wronging the innocent. Later, despite guilt over opposing Jian Hong, he frees Lin Qingyang from prison and blocks his master’s attack 245 310.
Abilities & Skills
Exceptional Sword Talent
Described as a once-in-a-century genius, Yun Zhan can master a move after seeing it once even when another cultivator has spent more than a decade practicing it 92.
- His talent earns him widespread recognition while he is still young 92.
- During his duel with Lin Qingyang, he reacts quickly enough to counter an attack after Lin suddenly vanishes from his immediate view 117.
Sword Qi and Sword Intent
Yun Zhan projects fierce, often frost-like sword energy through his blade, gestures, and palm strikes 100 224 226.
- Ranged attacks: Fires sword qi without first drawing his sword 100 113.
- Precision cutting: Severs Bi Yue’s red threads connecting him to Li Tian, interrupting the drain on Li Tian’s cultivation 224.
- Defense: Intercepts Langya’s blade light and deflects the poisoned blades released by an exploding corpse 212 243.
- Control: Confines Su Ruohuan’s red smoke to a corner with sword qi 310.
Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin
A supreme Divine Sword Mountain technique created by Wuchen. Yun Zhan commands a storm of sword shadows that converge on a target 225 317.
- Individual use: Produces more than a hundred swords of spiritual power 225.
- Collective use: Directs the gathered swords of over a hundred disciples against Jiuchen 317.
- Countermeasure: Bi Yue’s Heaven and Earth Reversed absorbs the attack and returns it as a blood-red barrage, injuring Yun Zhan 225.
Heavenly Gang Demon-Subduing Sword Formation
Yun Zhan occupies the position directly above the array eye while Divine Sword Mountain disciples combine their sword qi into an enormous silver net 300.
- The formation initially pins the creature within the Myriad Spirits Sect’s courtyard 300.
- The Corpse-Blood Tai Sui’s fungal threads disrupt the formation and overwhelm several participating disciples 300.
Combat Limitations
- Spiritual-power suppression: Loses access to spiritual power during his match with Wang Wu and is defeated before he can defend himself 113.
- High-level trapping arrays: Cannot immediately break Li Tian’s top-tier array; escapes only after Li Tian redirects his attention 227 228.
- Extreme cold: Xue Lanyuan freezes his sword and its circulating spiritual power, then immobilizes most of his body against a rockery 314.
- Severe injuries: Cannot steadily manifest sword shadows alone after Jiuchen wounds him, requiring the disciples’ collective support 317.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Lingyun Sword — His named sword, used in duels and to intercept Cang Mo’s attempted killing blow against Lu Ming. Hundred Swords Peak disciples temporarily confiscate it after Lu Qing seals his spiritual meridians 113 117 243 245.
- Star Radiance Stone — Supplied by Lin Qingyang for registration after the interrupted preliminary trial. Yun Zhan protests that accepting it violates the rules 100.
Relationships
- Jian Hong — Master and predecessor as Divine Sword Mountain’s sect leader. Yun Zhan respects and repeatedly protects him, but ultimately defies him to save Lin Qingyang. Jian Hong later dies shielding his disciples from Heavenly Execution 93 224 226 310 317 322.
- Lin Qingyang — Initially his desired opponent and benchmark in swordsmanship; later someone he trusts enough to oppose his own sect. He offers Lin protection, helps him escape execution, and eventually conveys the invitation to lead the Immortal Alliance 110 220 310 322.
- Qi Mo / Cang Mo — A hostile acquaintance whose closeness to Lin Qingyang repeatedly causes tension. Despite their antagonism, Yun Zhan rejects attempts to frame Cang Mo and later coordinates attacks with him against Jiuchen 93 221 228 245 317.
- Lu Ming — Junior fellow disciple. Yun Zhan searches for him, hesitates to use lethal force after his transformation, and ultimately kills him. The act leaves him visibly shaken 236 243 244.
- Lu Qing — Martial uncle who watched him grow up. Their relationship fractures when Lu Qing suppresses the truth about Lu Ming, seals Yun Zhan’s meridians, and has him taken away 244 245.
- Su Ruohuan — Fellow participant in Lin Qingyang’s prison escape. Although they are the original novel’s intended male and female leads, their eventual romance remains unresolved; by the ending, they attend Alliance meetings as fellow sect leaders 310 311 322.
- Jiuchen — Initially an object of reverence, then an enemy. Yun Zhan begins questioning him after Lin Qingyang’s accusations and joins the battle against him in Tianshui City 302 306 308 317.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Immortal Alliance Ceremony
Yun Zhan arrives as a celebrated prodigy widely expected to secure first place for Divine Sword Mountain. During the preliminary trial, he pursues a mysterious figure carrying Demonic Qi and encounters Lin Qingyang and Qi Mo. Afterward, Lin supplies him with a Star Radiance Stone despite his objections 92 99 100.
His first attempt to challenge Lin Qingyang ends with Lin declaring him the winner without fighting. Yun Zhan interprets this as a dismissal of his abilities. During the tournament, Wang Wu defeats him after his spiritual power abruptly becomes unavailable; when it returns, Yun Zhan attacks Wang Wu, whose apparent body breaks apart to reveal Jin Buhuan 110 113 115.
Yun Zhan finally duels Lin Qingyang amid the confrontation over Jin Buhuan. Lin defeats him with an unnamed, self-created move that sends power back through the Lingyun Sword and knocks it from his hand 117.
Peace Talks and the Hidden Market
Following five years of secluded cultivation, Yun Zhan accompanies the Immortal Alliance to the peace talks. Rather than asking Mo Yan for another duel, he asks whether Lin Qingyang truly remained in Demon Emperor City willingly. During the Xuanji Walnut crisis, he helps prevent fighting between the Human and Demon Clans and exposes the apparent Elder Chen as a wooden puppet 197 204 211 213.
He later offers to take Lin Qingyang to Divine Sword Mountain for protection. Lin explains that he is with Cang Mo willingly, and Yun Zhan withdraws while leaving an offer of future help. During Bi Yue’s attack, he protects Jian Hong, unleashes Ten Thousand Swords Return to the Origin, and helps stop the controlled Li Tian from attacking Lin 220 221 224 225 228.
Carefree House Incident
Yun Zhan seeks Lin Qingyang’s assistance after Lu Ming disappears while purchasing spirit herbs. Their investigation leads to Carefree House, where Lu Ming emerges as an Otherworldly Demon wielding a poisoned sword 236 237 243.
Still hoping to save his fellow disciple, Yun Zhan holds back and blocks Cang Mo’s killing blow. He ultimately kills Lu Ming himself and accepts responsibility, but Lu Qing attacks him, seals his meridians, and blames Cang Mo instead. Yun Zhan protests that the cover-up could provoke a war before Lu Qing strikes him unconscious 243 244 245.
Lin Qingyang’s Imprisonment and Escape
After joining the encirclement of Cang Mo under Jian Hong’s orders, Yun Zhan visits the imprisoned Lin Qingyang with food and water. Lin’s account of Jiuchen’s identity challenges his faith in the revered cultivator. His suspicions deepen when Jiuchen praises swordsmanship he should never have witnessed 302 306 308.
Although Jian Hong confines him to his room, Yun Zhan frees Lin, provides disciple robes as a disguise, and leads him and Su Ruohuan toward a hidden escape route. When Jian Hong discovers them, Yun Zhan blocks his master’s strike. He continues protecting the fugitives when Jiuchen intercepts them on the mountain 308 310 311.
Battle of Tianshui City and Succession
Jiuchen initially repels Yun Zhan and badly wounds him. After Cang Mo breaks Jiuchen’s barrier, Yun Zhan directs the Divine Sword Mountain disciples’ combined sword array in a coordinated assault. Jiuchen survives and retaliates with Heavenly Execution; Jian Hong sacrifices himself to prevent the disciples’ deaths 317.
Six months after peace is established, Yun Zhan has become Divine Sword Mountain’s new sect leader. He visits Lin Qingyang to deliver the Immortal Alliance assembly’s invitation for Lin to become its leader 322.
