Background / History

Qi Mo and the Ten Thousand Demons Forest

As Qi Mo, he addresses Lin Qingyang as “Master” and lives under his authority at Clear Wind Pavilion. After Qi Mo bites Hua Jin, Lin Qingyang rebukes him for recklessly endangering his life and forbids him from leaving without permission. Lin Qingyang tells Lin Yao that keeping Qi Mo alive might prevent him from becoming Demon King Cang Mo 40.

Cang Mo later awakens in the Ten Thousand Demons Forest, believing Lin Qingyang has abandoned him to die. While cultivating in a cave, he alternates between fantasies of revenge and anxiety over Lin Qingyang’s safety. He retrieves his old demon-binding ring, intending to forgive Lin Qingyang if he returns. When no one comes, Cang Mo eventually visits the Nine Skies Sect himself, only to find it deserted. He subsequently hears that Lin Qingyang lost his spiritual power, disbanded the sect, and died of his injuries 179.

Rise of the Demon King

Five years before the Hidden Market arc, Cang Mo emerges as the Demon King. He subdues the scattered demon clans and rebuilds Demon Emperor City on their ancestral territory, abandoned since the events of five hundred years earlier. Under his rule, the Demon Clan grows into a rival of the Immortal Alliance 143.

Reunion at the Ten Thousand Weapons Workshop

Cang Mo arrives at the workshop with high-level demon cultivators, surrounds the humans, and frees enslaved fire salamanders by destroying their Demon-Locking Rings. He shatters Lu Qing’s top-grade spiritual sword, injures Lu Ming’s sword hand, and overwhelms Mo Yan 148 149.

Lin Qingyang, disguised as the half-demon Tusi Rui, intervenes. Cang Mo fails to recognize him and orders him thrown into the magma. After their identities are exposed to one another, Cang Mo destroys Lin Qingyang’s Mirage Pearl and confronts him over both the forest incident and his attempt to pretend they were strangers 149 156.

Their renewed association combines practical cooperation with confinement and personal resentment. Lin Qingyang helps identify Wine Rat’s likely hiding place, while Cang Mo accepts thirty percent of the Hidden Market’s future profits and promises to send him back after the case is resolved 159.

Forced Marriage

Cang Mo prepares wedding robes without properly informing Lin Qingyang. When Lin Qingyang attempts to escape, Jin Buhuan immobilizes him and signals Cang Mo, who brings him back to Azure Wind Hall 177 178 184.

Having defeated and captured Mo Yan, Cang Mo threatens to spare him only if Lin Qingyang completes the wedding ceremony. His intention is not merely to marry Lin Qingyang, but to make him the Demon Clan’s Queen Consort and sever his place within the Human Clan 183 184.

Cang Mo places a wolf-shaped Demon Mark containing his heart’s blood on Lin Qingyang’s back, declaring that he will follow him wherever he goes. Despite briefly showing guilt at Lin Qingyang’s distress, he proceeds with the public wedding 185 186.

Lin Qingyang subsequently identifies Cang Mo as the likely architect behind Chimei’s acquisition of the Nine Heavens Sword and the destruction of the Red Refining Sect. He recognizes that Cang Mo has become a calculating sovereign rather than the awkward wolf cub he remembers 187.

Peace Talks and Separation

When the Immortal Alliance threatens to execute demon slaves unless Mo Yan and Lin Qingyang are released, Cang Mo prepares for war. He argues that demons cannot gain dignity unless humans fear them. Lin Qingyang instead urges negotiations and uses Li Tian’s dependence on Demon Clan spirit liquid to secure support for peace talks 191 196.

During Bi Yue’s manor trap, cultivation is suppressed, leaving Cang Mo reliant on physical strength. He repeatedly attempts to reach the imprisoned Lin Qingyang but is overwhelmed by the array-guarding Jade Falcon, which retains access to spiritual power. His external wounds heal, but the attack leaves severe internal injuries that he conceals from the Immortal Alliance 215 217 222.

After the confrontation with Bi Yue, Lin Qingyang presents an amicable divorce letter and says he stayed to secure peace talks and expose their enemy. Cang Mo destroys the letter and refuses the separation. When he attempts to force intimacy, Lin Qingyang blasts him away 230 231.

Langya and Hong Ling subsequently keep Cang Mo chained in Azure Wind Hall. He persuades Langya that he has accepted the breakup and will resume state duties, then escapes in a demonic tempest as soon as she releases him 235.

Blood Contract and the Nirvana Lotus

Cang Mo shields Lin Qingyang from Lu Ming’s poisonous sword qi, suffering wounds that corrode his flesh. Already badly injured and poisoned, he is captured by Divine Sword Mountain’s Demon-Capturing Nets 244 245.

When Lin Qingyang later stops breathing, Cang Mo learns that the old scar on his abdomen came from removing his own spiritual root. Refusing to accept his death, Cang Mo pours his vitality into a blood contract binding their lives together. The aftermath leaves him in wolf-cub form, cared for by Lin Qingyang 247 252.

Cang Mo secretly asks Jin Buhuan to locate the Nirvana Lotus, which Lin Qingyang needs to survive. During the search, he swallows an ancient Demon Core offered by Divine Jade Immortal Venerable. The Immortal Venerable attempts to refine him in a cauldron, but Cang Mo subsequently appears in human form and overpowers him 261 262 265.

Cang Yu’s Demonic Qi and Reconciliation

Absorbing Cang Yu’s remaining demonic qi before digesting the ancient core drives Cang Mo into a feral state. He attacks Mo Yan, breaks Jin Buhuan’s restraints, and develops wolf ears and a tail 270 271 272.

Although still protective of Lin Qingyang, he cannot freely control the inherited power. When he tries to kill the revived Wuyun, Cang Yu’s qi diverts his attack and inflicts backlash. Wuyun initially mistakes him for Cang Yu because their scents have become nearly identical 273.

After regaining his reason, Cang Mo is shaken by Cang Yu’s long, futile wait and Wuyun’s despair. Back in Demon Emperor City, he acknowledges his mistreatment of Lin Qingyang and apologizes. He later tells Lin Qingyang that he does not blame him for the forest incident, allowing them to confront the guilt and fear surrounding their separation 280 284 285 287.

Final Conflict with Jiuchen

While investigating the Myriad Spirits Sect, Cang Mo fights the regenerating Corpse-Blood Tai Sui and splits its main body with Howling Moon. He survives being engulfed by the creature, then pursues the escaping fragment containing its Demon Core, only for a Ten-Thousand-Li Tianyan Array to intervene 295 296.

During the subsequent conflict, Jiuchen and the controlled Xue Lanyuan severely wound him. Cang Mo nevertheless shields Lin Qingyang and drives his claws into Jiuchen’s chest before being struck over a cliff 304.

He awakens beneath the snow and discovers that his blood contract with Lin Qingyang has broken. After healing his wounds with demonic power, he sends a heart’s-blood totem toward Demon Emperor City. He later confronts Jiuchen before the Demon Clan army at Tianshui City, where Lin Qingyang arrives through a teleportation array and reunites with him 308 315.

Jiuchen eventually disarms and impales Cang Mo, intending to use the Demon King’s bloodline to activate a grand array. Lin Qingyang pushes Cang Mo to safety and is swallowed by the array instead. Cang Mo continues fighting despite near-fatal injuries; when Lin Qingyang returns, he collapses into his embrace and sobs 318 320.

Appearance

Cang Mo’s adult form is tall and slender, with muscular strength, exceptionally pale skin, and sharp features that Lin Qingyang finds beautiful but sinister 149 157 202.

  • Hair: Long, silvery-white hair, often worn loose 148 149.
  • Eyes: Amber, wolf-like eyes; scarlet coloration accompanies frenzy and extreme emotional distress 270 315.
  • Clothing: Usually black robes; wears gold-edged black robes for court and red robes with a golden crown for his wedding 177 186.
  • Wolf traits: White wolf ears, a large silver-white tail, fangs, and claws. The ears and tail appear involuntarily during power instability but can also be manifested deliberately 272 273 285.
  • Alternate forms: Can assume his familiar youthful appearance and, after the blood contract, regresses to a wolf cub 163 252.

Personality

Cang Mo is cold, proud, and ruthless toward opponents. He humiliates defeated enemies, remembers old injuries, and readily resorts to lethal punishment. His political methods are also calculated: Lin Qingyang eventually recognizes that his apparent impulsiveness coexists with elaborate planning 149 187.

His attachment to Lin Qingyang is shaped by a profound fear of abandonment. Affection repeatedly becomes jealousy, confinement, threats, or coercion, including the forced marriage and refusal to accept divorce. Perceived rivals such as Yun Zhan and Hai Lan provoke immediate suspicion 184 221 230 265.

He is also capable of sustained tenderness: tending injuries, preparing meals, seeking treatment for Lin Qingyang’s spiritual root, and spending his own vitality to bind their lives together. Later, he recognizes his past cruelty and apologizes rather than denying it 159 169 247 283 285.

As ruler, he initially treats fear as the foundation of the Demon Clan’s dignity. Lin Qingyang challenges this outlook, urging him to consider the lives affected by his decisions and to earn respect through fairness as well as authority 191 246.

Abilities & Skills

Demonic Qi and Barriers

Cang Mo uses demonic power for offense, defense, movement, and precise manipulation.

  • Destroys multiple Demon-Locking Rings with a demonic wind 149.

  • Releases violent winds and moves as black mist or a dark blur 235 245 315.
  • Channels qi into Lin Qingyang’s body to examine his condition 284.
  • His barriers are not absolute: poisonous sword qi penetrates one while he shields Lin Qingyang 244.

Saber Combat

His principal fighting style combines Howling Moon with overwhelming demonic power.

  • Produces crescent-shaped saber light and cuts apart enormous water pythons 151 168.
  • Sends Wolf Shadows after a moving opponent 183.
  • Splits the Corpse-Blood Tai Sui’s main body in one heavy cleave 295.

Physical Strength and Instincts

Even without cultivation, Cang Mo retains exceptional strength, reflexes, and beastlike combat instincts.

  • Tears the arms from a puppet made of thousand-year-old Divine Wood 202.
  • Fights Jian Hong with an ordinary short saber, then injures him barehanded after the weapon breaks 202.
  • Cracks a stone guardian lion’s head with a kick and maneuvers two lions into colliding 206.
  • Cannot overcome the spiritually empowered Jade Falcon through physical strength alone 215.

Regeneration and Demonic Fire

His demonic power rapidly repairs damaged flesh, but does not make him invulnerable.

  • Burns parasitic spores from his arm with black demonic fire, sacrificing a layer of flesh that subsequently heals 295.
  • Quickly repairs damaged claws and minor facial injuries 274 283.
  • External healing can conceal serious internal damage 222.
  • Poison, overwhelming spiritual attacks, and repeated wounds can exhaust his ability to continue fighting 245 318.

Blood Techniques

Cang Mo uses heart’s blood in several distinct techniques.

  • Demon Mark: Places a wolf totem containing his heart’s blood on Lin Qingyang’s back, claiming it will let him follow him even through reincarnation 185.
  • Life-binding blood contract: Binds their lives at immense personal cost. While active, he senses Lin Qingyang’s heartbeat alongside his own 247 308.
  • Heart’s-blood totem: Sends an ancient Demon Clan symbol toward Demon Emperor City 308.
  • Blood blades: Mixes heart’s blood with demonic qi to form blades capable of wounding Jiuchen 320.

Transformation and Practical Skills

  • Changes into a youthful appearance and later uses black hair as part of a disguise 163 287.
  • Manifests wolf ears and a tail voluntarily 285.
  • Prepares Lin Qingyang’s favorite dishes and fish soup, and reheats food with demonic power 283 285.

  • Hong Ling — Attendant who helps Langya watch over Cang Mo during his confinement in Azure Wind Hall 235.

  • Jin Buhuan — Assists Cang Mo in stopping Lin Qingyang’s escape, but also undertakes his secret search for the Nirvana Lotus and attempts to restrain him during his demonic frenzy 184 265 271.
  • Cang Yu — A demon of the same species whose remaining qi Cang Mo absorbs. No familial relationship is established in the supplied passages 270 273.
  • Wuyun — Initially mistakes Cang Mo for Cang Yu. Cang Mo regards him as a threat to Lin Qingyang, but Cang Yu’s residual qi prevents him from killing Wuyun 273.
  • Bi Yue / Jiuchen — Principal enemy who exploits Lin Qingyang to manipulate Cang Mo and ultimately attempts to sacrifice the Demon King’s bloodline to a grand array 215 304 318.
