Arc 18Northrend to Kalimdor

Aaron helped defeat Loken and Yogg-Saron, then worked with Azeroth to strengthen the Keepers and restore the blue dragons to Coldarra. He joined Tandred’s expedition to Kalimdor, made initial arrangements with the Night Elves, and set out with Vereesa and Shandris toward Astranaar and Mount Hyjal.

  • Aaron defeated Loken, but Loken crumbled under Yogg-Saron’s influence and black smoke spread toward the Old God’s prison seal.
  • Aaron helped Algalon abandon his plan to reset Azeroth, then led the expedition into Yogg-Saron’s prison and helped kill the Old God.
  • Freya connected Aaron to the Emerald Dream and made the Tear of Elune a source of Holy Light for purifying Yogg-Saron’s remains.
  • Aaron helped Senegos and the Azurewing Whelplands dragons return to Coldarra, then sailed back to the Eastern Kingdoms and joined Tandred’s voyage to Kalimdor.
  • Tandred’s fleet landed near Auberdine, where Alyssa Starbreeze and the Night Elf Sentinels helped repel Troll attackers before the expedition sailed south.
  • Cenarius welcomed Aaron and Tandred, while Shandris Feathermoon offered limited travel and trade arrangements with the Night Elves.
  • Aaron and Vereesa set out for Astranaar with Shandris, who calmed the troublesome creatures along the way and welcomed them to the town.
Chapters 426–450 Vol. 5 Read

Ch. 426The siege of Loken

Thorim, Archaedas, Hodir, and Freya battled Loken and his Old God forces in the Halls of Lightning. Aaron seized an opening to isolate Loken and help the Keepers overwhelm him, then revealed that Loken feared his death would bring Algalon to reset Azeroth.

  • Thorim attacked Loken, and Archaedas and Freya's ancient elders joined the fight as Loken summoned elementals, Fleshbeasts, Faceless Ones, and four Kraxxi.
  • The Faceless Ones pressured the expeditionary army while four Titan Keepers fought Loken and the Kraxxi to a stalemate.
  • When Archaedas knocked Loken away from the Kraxxi, Aaron transformed into a stone giant and dragged him beyond their reach.
  • Aaron called on the dragons to hold off the Kraxxi, allowing Archaedas and Hodir to join Thorim in attacking Loken.
  • Loken pleaded for his life, and Aaron said he knew that killing Loken would bring Algalon to reset Azeroth before knocking him down and demanding his surrender.

Ch. 427The shattered Loken

Aaron and the Titan Keepers captured Loken, but Yogg-Saron took control of him and caused him to shatter, spreading corruption toward the prison seal. Aaron left to await Algalon at the observatory while the Keepers tried to preserve the seal.

  • Aaron defeated Loken, and Freya bound him with vines as Archaedas stopped Thorim from killing him.
  • Archaedas tried to persuade Loken to abandon his plan, but Loken remained defiant and warned that Yogg-Saron would descend.
  • Loken began cracking apart under Yogg-Saron's influence, broke free of Freya's vines, and released black smoke that enlarged the Old Gods' minions.
  • Loken crumbled into stone fragments, and the black smoke spread toward the gate sealing Yogg-Saron's prison.
  • Archaedas ordered the Keepers to maintain the seal, and Aaron headed to the observatory to wait for Algalon.

Ch. 428Algalon the Observer

Aaron opened Ulduar’s observatory with the disc Brann had taken from its archive and prepared Xal'atath to stop Algalon from triggering Azeroth’s reset procedure. As Algalon appeared, Xal'atath warned Aaron that the Observer would have to pass through him to reach the Halls of Valor.

  • Aaron found Brann guarding the observatory, and Brann admitted he had taken a disc from an archive inside.
  • Aaron used the disc to open the observatory doors and found an empty hall with a transparent platform at its center.
  • Vereesa asked whether Aaron would summon more people to fight Algalon, and Aaron explained that he meant to prevent a fight and stop the reset signal from being sent.
  • Aaron revealed that Xal'atath was ready to give Algalon information about Azeroth as soon as he arrived.
  • Xal'atath warned Aaron that Algalon would have to pass through him to reach the Halls of Valor, and Algalon appeared on the platform.

Ch. 429A blow to conviction: the Pantheon was already gone

Azeroth stopped Algalon from resetting the planet by revealing that the Pantheon had fallen and showing him fragments of the Titans’ souls. Algalon abandoned the reset, and Azeroth offered him a contract to serve her.

  • Azeroth arrived at the observatory, identified herself to Algalon, and ordered Archaedas to conceal what had happened.
  • Algalon hesitated to abandon his duty to reset Azeroth, so Azeroth told him the Pantheon was gone and explained Sargeras’s fall and attack on the Titans.
  • Azeroth showed Algalon and Aaron the weakened souls of fallen Titans, which she had rescued from Ra.
  • Algalon believed Azeroth, gave up the plan to reset the planet, and accepted the contract Azeroth offered him to serve her.

Ch. 430Intruders in the Cage

Algalon signed Azeroth’s contract and joined the group, while Azeroth left the observatory after warning them to handle matters in her absence. A green dragon then reported strange beings weakening Yogg-Saron’s prison, and Freya warned Aaron that killing the Old God could bring terrible consequences.

  • Azeroth gave Algalon a contract to sign, explaining that she planned to have Pantheon-serving Titan-forged sign similar contracts when they were recruited.
  • Algalon signed the contract, and Azeroth introduced him to Archaedas and Aaron as a colleague.
  • Azeroth left the observatory after telling the others to prepare and urging them to kill Yogg-Saron.
  • A green dragon messenger told Archaedas that Freya had sensed unusual life-forms beyond the seal, and Aaron went with the messenger to investigate.
  • Freya said the cage was growing unstable and Yogg-Saron might escape within days, but warned Aaron that killing the Old God could harm Azeroth and the planet.

Ch. 431The Gap Between Illusion and Reality

Aaron and the Keepers debated whether to kill Yogg-Saron or imprison him again, then led an expedition into the damaged prison to confront its defenders. After fighting through the invaders, they approached Yogg-Saron’s prison and prepared for the dangers of his influence.

  • Aaron argued that killing Yogg-Saron would not cause the devastation the Keepers feared, and Azeroth’s prior instruction helped persuade them to agree.
  • Aaron and the expeditionary force opened the prison doors and found Faceless Ones and Undead, including Nerubians, digging through the walls.
  • The expeditionary force attacked the Faceless Ones after the Undead withdrew through their tunnels, routing the remaining defenders.
  • The group encountered strange illusions and real floating debris near Yogg-Saron’s prison, which they recognized as signs of his influence.
  • Aaron warned everyone to flee if anything felt wrong and left some members outside to reduce the risk of them falling under Yogg-Saron’s influence.

Ch. 432General Vezax

Aaron led an expedition into Yogg-Saron’s prison, where General Vezax summoned elementals and gathered Saronite crystals to delay them. The expedition killed Vezax, but Yogg-Saron broke free immediately afterward.

  • Aaron chose soldiers who had resisted Yogg-Saron’s influence to enter the prison first and arranged for reserves and Val'kyr to monitor them.
  • The expedition advanced through the prison and encountered General Vezax and two other Kraxxi guarding the way to Yogg-Saron.
  • Vezax summoned a horde of fire and wind elementals while the expedition fought to push forward.
  • Vereesa used the Titans' Strike to shatter Vezax’s Saronite crystals, preventing him from accumulating enough to stop the expedition.
  • Aaron, the Keepers, and the soldiers killed General Vezax, but Yogg-Saron broke free and announced his return.

Ch. 433Demon of a Thousand Maws

Yogg-Saron broke free beneath its prison and attacked Aaron’s expedition with Faceless Ones, tentacles, and weakening spells. Aaron entered Yogg-Saron’s dream realm with nine others to strike its brain while the Titan Keepers waited outside to attack once its barrier fell.

  • Yogg-Saron’s whispers trapped many soldiers in illusions, but Aaron, the Titan Keepers, and Liadrin resisted or quickly recovered.
  • Thorim jolted the affected soldiers awake, and Aaron led the expedition into Yogg-Saron’s prison.
  • Yogg-Saron burst from beneath the chamber floor, summoned Faceless Ones, and sent tentacles to attack and weaken the expedition.
  • A barrier protected Yogg-Saron, so Aaron chose to enter its dream realm and attack its brain while Archaedas and the other Keepers prepared to strike from outside.
  • Aaron and nine expedition members stepped through the portals, while he realized that bringing five Keepers meant he would miss out on Mimiron’s Head again.

Ch. 434Yogg-Saron's dream realm

Aaron led the group through Yogg-Saron’s dream realm, where they fought tentacle illusions and attacked the Old God’s brain while escaping each vision. After a vision of Archimonde killing an alternate Aaron, they returned to find the barrier down and the assembled forces attacking Yogg-Saron.

  • Aaron recognized the first vision as Thoradin awakening Zakajz and led everyone against the human illusions that turned into tentacles.
  • The group rushed through the opened barrier and portal to attack Yogg-Saron’s brain before its spell finished, then returned to the prison hall.
  • Aaron taught the portal teams to attack each vision’s targets quickly, and the group repeated their assaults through visions of Neltharion, Garona, Kith’ix, the Scourge of the Sands, and Azshara.
  • Krasus sensed that Yogg-Saron was nearing its limit, while Aaron and the others entered another vision and saw Archimonde kill an alternate Aaron.
  • After the group completed one final assault and escaped the dream realm, the barrier vanished and attacks from every direction engulfed Yogg-Saron.

Ch. 435The Old God met his end

The expedition killed Yogg-Saron, then the Titan Keepers began planning how to destroy and purify its scattered remains. Aaron learned the work could take years, until Freya relayed Lady Azeroth’s proposal to combine him with the Emerald Dream.

  • Thorim, Archaedas, and Hodir helped the expedition kill Yogg-Saron after it severed and scattered many of its limbs.
  • The Titan Keepers decided to crush Yogg-Saron’s remains rather than seal them away, after Aaron warned them about the Heart of Y’Shaarj’s dangers.
  • Aaron joined Archaedas and Thorim in purifying Yogg-Saron’s tendrils, but estimated that purifying the body would take nearly two years.
  • Freya told Aaron that Lady Azeroth had a proposal requiring his cooperation, and Aaron was stunned to hear it involved putting him together with the Emerald Dream.

Ch. 436Linking to the Emerald Dream

Freya linked Aaron to the Emerald Dream, granting him a connection to nature and the possibility of becoming a Wild God. She told him that this was only the beginning and that the work to purify Yogg-Saron would continue inside the Emerald Dream.

  • Aaron learned about the benefits of linking to the Emerald Dream, including the chance to survive as a soul after his body died.
  • Freya brought Aaron to the Conservatory of Life, where Ursoc advised him to roar or fight if the connection overwhelmed him.
  • Freya used nature magic to connect Aaron to the Emerald Dream, and ancient beings with ties to it sensed the arrival of a weak new companion who wielded the Holy Light.
  • Aaron discovered that his strength had recovered and that he could faintly sense the life force of other living beings.
  • Aaron asked whether his new connection would speed up the purification of Yogg-Saron, and Freya opened a portal and explained that the next steps had to happen inside the Emerald Dream.

Ch. 437The Tear of Elune

Aaron entered the Emerald Dream, where Freya revealed the Tear of Elune and transformed it into a source of Holy Light. He learned he could draw on its power and let others use it, leaving him with some of a Wild God's authority as he considered starting a religious order.

  • Aaron entered the Emerald Dream in soul form and found Freya waiting for him.
  • Freya reached into Aaron's chest and withdrew the Tear of Elune, prompting Ysera to recognize the artifact she believed had vanished during the Sundering.
  • Aaron suspected a hidden connection between the Tear's disappearance and his arrival in Azeroth.
  • Freya used the Emerald Dream's power to make the Tear of Elune a source of Holy Light for the keepers to use against Yogg-Saron's remains.
  • Freya taught Aaron how to draw on the Tear's power and grant others permission to use it, giving him some of a Wild God's authority.

Ch. 438The expeditionary force disbands

After leaving the Emerald Dream, Aaron arranged the expeditionary force’s withdrawal from Northrend and prepared to return to Covenant City. Before departing, he still had to visit the Maker's Overlook at Azeroth’s request.

  • Aaron used the Tear of Elune to enter the Emerald Dream, while Freya stayed behind to speak with Ysera and investigate the Emerald Nightmare.
  • Aaron returned to his body and answered Kael'thas and the others’ questions about his experience in the Emerald Dream.
  • Aaron concluded that Ner'zhul remained hidden somewhere in Azjol-Nerub, beyond the surviving Nerubians’ ability to search safely.
  • The expeditionary force’s members prepared to leave or remain in Northrend, while Tyr's Guard stayed temporarily to guard the Orc logging crews until Kul Tiras sent replacements.
  • Aaron considered Northrend’s timber and mineral resources, then resolved to return to Covenant City and visit the Maker's Overlook before leaving.

Ch. 439Azeroth's arrangements

Aaron traveled to Maker's Overlook in Sholazar Basin, where Azeroth asked Archaedas to use the Forge of Wills to create bodies for the heroic spirits. Azeroth also revealed that Aaron had given it the Tear of Elune and sent him to bring Senegos and the blue dragons to Maker's Overlook.

  • Mimiron repaired Ulduar's teleporters, and Aaron used one to reach Sholazar Basin.
  • Aaron met Azeroth and asked for a way to communicate with it at any time, but Azeroth showed him Magni Bronzebeard as a warning about becoming a diamond dwarf.
  • Azeroth asked Archaedas to use the Forge of Wills to make bodies for the heroic spirits gathered at Maker's Overlook.
  • Azeroth told Aaron that he had given it the Tear of Elune before it had a clear consciousness, and Aaron connected this to a possible past visit to the War of the Ancients.
  • Aaron told Azeroth about his vision in Yogg-Saron's dream realm and feared that Archimonde would kill him in the War of the Ancients, but Azeroth refused to explain the scene.
  • Azeroth asked Aaron to bring Senegos and all his blue dragons from the Azurewing Whelplands to Maker's Overlook.

Ch. 440The Blue Dragonflight's Manpower Reinforcement Plan

Azeroth and Saragosa planned to merge Azurewing Whelplands with Coldarra to strengthen the Blue Dragonflight and repair the ley lines. Aaron traveled with Stellagosa, Sapphiron, and Krasus to ask Senegos to return, where Senegos mistook Stellagosa for Sindragosa.

  • Saragosa explained that Coldarra needed experienced blue dragons to maintain its disrupted ley lines, while Azurewing Whelplands' young dragons needed Coldarra's abundant energy.
  • Azeroth and Aaron accepted the plan, and Saragosa prepared to notify Coldarra while Aaron agreed to bring Stellagosa to Senegos.
  • Azeroth reminded Aaron that he was her spokesperson and that she needed to avoid drawing the Burning Legion's attention by appearing outside.
  • Aaron arranged to take Sapphiron and Krasus through a portal from Coldarra to Azurewing Whelplands, with Stellagosa providing the coordinates.
  • Stellagosa hurried to Senegos's pool and startled him; Senegos initially mistook her for Sindragosa before recognizing Little Star.

Ch. 441The changes in Malygos

Aaron helped bring Senegos and the Azurewing Whelplands dragons back to Coldarra, then returned to Maker's Overlook and found Malygos recovering with golden-edged scales. Aaron left for Covenant City as his Northrend expedition ended, while Azeroth hinted that the Reign of Chaos might still occur.

  • Sapphiron and Aaron explained Malygos's injuries and the Infinite Dragonflight to Senegos, then invited him and his kin to return to Coldarra.
  • Senegos consulted Stellagosa and agreed to move the Azurewing Whelplands dragons back to Coldarra.
  • Aaron encountered Kel'Thuzad at a Kul Tiras trading post and warned him about seeking Val'kyr to study.
  • After three days, the blue dragons reached Coldarra, and Kalecgos collapsed from maintaining the portal.
  • Aaron saw Malygos's restored body bearing golden-edged scales, then told Azeroth he was returning to Covenant City.
  • Azeroth suggested the Reign of Chaos might still happen, and Aaron returned to Grizzly Hills to sail for the Eastern Kingdoms.

Ch. 442Leisurely days

After returning to Covenant City, Aaron enjoyed a relatively peaceful stretch as Northrend's dangers receded and the city prospered. Tandred ended that leisure by inviting Aaron to sail with his fleet to Kalimdor.

  • Before sailing home, Aaron visited the Azjol-Nerub Empire and granted some surviving Nerubians the ability to wield the Holy Light, while withholding it from the rest out of caution and distrust.
  • The Lich King hid from the increasingly powerful Nerubians as personnel from Wyrmrest Temple and Ulduar joined the hunt, while the Eastern Kingdoms' orcs remained largely inactive.
  • Covenant City gained steady income from trade and Northrend's timber and minerals, and its new magic academy opened under Kael'thas, with Arugal teaching lightning magic.
  • The academy attracted apprentices and merchants, making Covenant City's market district busier and creating new administrative challenges for Aaron, Illucia, and Edwin.
  • Tandred visited Aaron and invited him to join his fleet on a voyage to Kalimdor.

Ch. 443Tandred's invitation

Tandred invited Aaron to join an expedition from Kul Tiras to Kalimdor, and Aaron agreed because he wanted to prepare for the coming conflict and make contact with the Night Elves. In year thirteen after the opening of the Dark Portal, Aaron and a group of companions departed for Kalimdor.

  • Tandred told Aaron that Admiral Daelin had allowed him to organize an expedition fleet to find a sea route to Kalimdor.
  • Aaron decided to join Tandred, reasoning that he should establish relations with the Night Elves before future wars began.
  • Tandred proposed sailing via Northrend, whose coast had become safer as Sea Giants answered Archaedas's call.
  • Aaron informed Illucia of his decision, then asked Tandred to request High Elf interpreters from Kael'thas for contact with the Night Elves.
  • In year thirteen after the opening of the Dark Portal, Aaron and the expedition set out for Kalimdor as Illucia saw them off.

Ch. 444First contact

Aaron and Tandred guided the fleet along Winterspring’s coast toward Darkshore, avoiding a ruined beach Aaron identified as Troll and Undead territory. The fleet encountered a dark-skinned female elf who signaled for help and demanded to know who they were.

  • The fleet confirmed it had reached Winterspring, and Aaron pointed out Darkshore and Azshara as possible landing regions.
  • Tandred chose Darkshore despite Aaron’s preference for Azshara, and the fleet turned west along the coast.
  • Aaron sensed druids in the forests beyond the mountains but did not detect Cenarius or Ursoc.
  • Aaron told Tandred to avoid a beach scattered with ruins because it was Troll and Undead territory.
  • A female elf in a purple-decorated boat fired a signal arrow and shouted at the fleet, and Vereesa guessed she was asking who they were.

Ch. 445The Elven Town of Auberdine

Aaron and the Kul Tiran fleet made cautious contact with the Night Elves of Auberdine, where Druid Thundris Windweaver recognized Aaron as a newly born Wild God and allowed him to visit the town. The fleet camped nearby, but at dawn a group of Trolls attacked, leaving Aaron to face the sudden threat.

  • Alyssa Starbreeze allowed the fleet to land near Auberdine but refused Tandred's request to visit the town.
  • Thundris Windweaver sensed Aaron's vitality, identified him as the new Wild God, and agreed to let him visit Auberdine with a small group.
  • Aaron and his companions toured the Night Elf town, then returned to the Kul Tiran camp as the fleet gathered water and hunted for food.
  • At dawn, Aaron heard fighting outside his tent, recognized a familiar stench, and saw ragged Trolls attacking the camp.

Ch. 446Unexpected raiders

Trolls launched a surprise attack on the Kul Tiran camp at Darkshore, but Aaron, Vereesa, and the sailors drove them off before Night Elf Sentinels arrived in pursuit. After several days resting near Auberdine and gaining permission to trade, Tandred took the fleet south toward Ashenvale.

  • Aaron woke to fighting and helped repel the attacking Trolls with his projected Brilliant Greatsword while Vereesa fought with lightning-charged arrows.
  • Tandred stopped the Kul Tirans from pursuing the fleeing Trolls, wary that the unfamiliar land could conceal an ambush.
  • Alyssa and the Night Elf Sentinels arrived, pursued the Trolls, and returned with their spoils; the Night Elves then treated the Kul Tirans more warmly.
  • Tandred thanked Alyssa through Vereesa and spent several days resting near Auberdine while Aaron explored Darkshore.
  • After gaining permission to trade with the Night Elves, Tandred sailed south toward Ashenvale to visit their main settlements.

Ch. 447The Master's Glaive

Tyrande Whisperwind learned that the Kul Tiras fleet was approaching and agreed to make contact with its people, while Aaron's fleet reached the southern end of Darkshore. The fleet arrived near Zoram Strand, where Aaron spotted Cenarius and a Night Elf woman waiting onshore.

  • Thundris Windweaver sent letters to Nordrassil reporting the Kul Tiras fleet and its wish to contact the Night Elves.
  • Tyrande Whisperwind consulted Fandral Staghelm, agreed to meet the newcomers, and summoned Shandris Feathermoon.
  • Vereesa pointed out the enormous sword embedded in the mound at the Master's Glaive, and Aaron recognized the place and remembered Soggoth beneath it.
  • The fleet continued south past Darkshore and reached the port at Zoram Strand, where most ships had to moor along the undeveloped coast.
  • Aaron saw Cenarius and a female Night Elf onshore and wondered whether she was Tyrande or Shandris.

Ch. 448Side story: Arator's grand adventure

Arator ran away from Sylvanas to avoid archery practice and stayed with Aaron in Covenant City, where he explored the city and hoped to learn the Holy Light. The chapter ended with Vereesa returning from a mission in the south.

  • Arator slipped out of the Expeditioners' Camp while Sylvanas believed he was merely sulking.
  • Arator reached Covenant City, watched Antonidas demonstrate magic, and told Jaina he wanted to learn the Holy Light instead of arcane magic.
  • Aaron found Arator and agreed to let him stay in Covenant City so he could avoid Sylvanas's archery lessons.
  • Arator spent his time exploring the market district, watching magic demonstrations, and visiting Liadrin's Paladin training camp, but Liadrin refused to teach him the Holy Light.
  • Aaron brought Arator to the harbor, where Arator spotted Vereesa returning from the south and excitedly greeted her.

Ch. 449The Night Elves' terms

Aaron and the Kul Tirans met Cenarius and Shandris Feathermoon in Kalimdor, where Shandris delivered Tyrande’s terms for travel and trade. The Night Elves allowed limited trade outside their core territory, leaving Aaron to continue discussions with Shandris and visit Cenarius later at Mount Hyjal.

  • Tandred recognized Cenarius as the legendary Lord of the Forest, and Aaron approached him with the Kul Tirans.
  • Cenarius welcomed Aaron, thanked him for helping Ysera and the Guardians, and invited him to Mount Hyjal after his business was finished.
  • Cenarius introduced Shandris Feathermoon as Tyrande’s representative, and Shandris surprised the group by speaking Common.
  • Shandris said the Night Elves could offer the Kul Tirans limited help traveling through Kalimdor.
  • Shandris explained that trade was acceptable only at trading posts within designated boundaries, away from the Night Elves’ core territory.

Ch. 450The inhabitants of Ashenvale

After securing limited trade terms and a shipping route with the Night Elves, Aaron explored Ashenvale with Vereesa and headed toward Mount Hyjal. Shandris joined them along the way, and they reached Astranaar.

  • Tandred accepted that Kul Tiras could not negotiate better trade terms with the Night Elves, while Aaron considered the agreement and shipping route worthwhile.
  • Aaron decided to explore Ashenvale before visiting Mount Hyjal and set out for Astranaar with Vereesa.
  • Dryads repeatedly tangled Aaron and Vereesa in plants, while friendly Faerie Dragons played around them.
  • Shandris caught up with Aaron and Vereesa, said she was going to report the agreement to Tyrande, and accompanied them toward Mount Hyjal.
  • Shandris's presence calmed the troublesome creatures, and after half a day she welcomed Aaron and Vereesa to Astranaar.
