Background / History
Clan Leadership and Wei Yi’s Disgrace
Wei Tianyang heads the Wei Clan of Jinling City, a lineage whose influence extends across an entire commandery. A renowned first-class expert, he is the clan’s strongest martial artist, ranking above its three great elders. His authority also benefits from Shen Qiulan’s pill refining: senior clansmen depend on her for high-grade pills and are reluctant to offend the couple 1 24 26.
His only son, Wei Yi, initially enjoyed a pampered upbringing and an uncontested position as young master. When True Martial Academy diagnosed Wei Yi with severed meridians, Wei Tianyang personally intervened to prevent his expulsion. The academy granted a one-year extension, but his influence could not secure an indefinite exemption from its requirements 1.
Young Master Succession Contest
Wei Yi’s apparent inability to cultivate gave the clan elders grounds to seek a replacement. Wei Tianyang could not justify retaining an heir who lacked the strength to command the clan’s acceptance. After hearing that Wei Yi could cultivate again, he sent Uncle Wu to verify the news and bring him home if he could defend his position 17.
At the succession gathering, Wei Tianyang allowed Wei Yi to answer the elders’ objections and challenge their sons. After Wei Yi defeated Wei Yuan, Wei Hong, and Wei Wu, he openly celebrated the victory and secured the elders’ agreement to recognize Wei Yi as young master 21 22.
Bloodline Guidance
At home, Wei Tianyang accepted Wei Yi’s explanation that the academy’s meridian test had been mistaken. He and Shen Qiulan wanted to demand an explanation from the academy, but Wei Yi persuaded them not to pursue the matter 23.
Wei Tianyang then examined his son’s awakened bloodline, demonstrated his own bloodline power, and explained how a stronger bloodline improved the chances of awakening a special martial soul. He arranged for Wei Yi to enter the ancestral grounds alongside twenty selected disciples 23.
When Wei Yi awakened a Silver-Rank Bloodline, Wei Tianyang was the first outside the grounds to detect the disturbance. He celebrated the awakening and later authorized its public announcement, deciding that the conspicuous heavenly phenomenon made secrecy impractical 24 25.
Hongshan Ridge Expedition
Upon learning that abnormal fire had appeared at Hongshan Ridge, Wei Tianyang organized an expedition led by himself and the three elders, supported by twenty Great Martial Masters and a hundred Martial Masters. He ordered Wei Yi to accompany them 28.
He rejected Sun Zhenshan’s attempt to negotiate the Wei Clan’s withdrawal, demanding the Sun Clan’s cornerstone cultivation technique and a hundred thousand taels of gold. After learning the details of the Sun brothers’ attempts on Wei Yi’s life, he offered to kill them himself; Wei Yi instead asked him to hold off their father 29.
When Sun Zhenshan attacked Wei Yi, Wei Tianyang intercepted the blow with his staff and activated his black bear Martial Soul. He continued blocking Sun Zhenshan while Wei Yi killed Sun Wenzong. After Wei Yi secured the Crimson Crystal True Flame, Wei Tianyang broke through the surrounding attackers and led the clan safely out of the gorge 30 31 32.
Warning About the Overlord Sect
When Wei Yi prepared to leave home, Wei Tianyang warned that enemies were still watching him and that the family could not guarantee his safety outside the clan. He also presented a dossier identifying the brocade-robed opponent from Hongshan Ridge as Yuwen Bei, the second son of Overlord Sect elder Yuwen Hui 33.
Wei Tianyang explained that the Sun Clan had sought ties with Yuwen Hui and that Yuwen Bei, himself an alchemist, was likely the intended recipient of the abnormal fire. He cautioned that joining the Overlord Sect would expose Wei Yi to Yuwen Bei’s covert retaliation 33.
Personality
Wei Tianyang is affectionate and openly proud of his son. He vividly recounts Wei Yi’s victories to Shen Qiulan, laughs at his embarrassment during their reunion, and praises his continued sword practice after his rise to fame. He values diligence rather than allowing success to become an excuse for complacency 22 23 25.
His protectiveness does not erase his practical judgment. He recognizes that personal authority cannot make an incapable heir acceptable to the clan, and he gives Wei Yi explicit warnings about dangers beyond the family’s protection 17 33.
Toward enemies, he is blunt and ruthless. He treats Sun Zhenshan without courtesy, investigates the ambush against his son, and immediately offers lethal retaliation against those responsible 29.
Abilities & Skills
Martial King Cultivation
Wei Tianyang is the Wei Clan’s strongest expert and is explicitly identified as a Martial King 24 31.
- Superior combat strength: Holds the advantage over fellow Martial King Sun Zhenshan and prevents him from reaching Wei Yi 31 32.
- Speed and mobility: Instantly reaches the succession arena and repeatedly intercepts Sun Zhenshan 22 31.
- Perception: Detects the ancestral grounds’ bloodline disturbance before the three elders 24.
Bronze-Rank Bloodline
His powerful cultivation makes his Bronze-Rank Bloodline strong enough to suppress Wei Yi’s initial bloodline manifestation with one hand 23 24.
- Suppression: Easily restrains Wei Yi’s comparatively weak bloodline before its evolution 23.
- Limitation: Silver bloodlines innately suppress bronze bloodlines, making the same feat substantially harder after Wei Yi’s advancement 24.
Black Bear Martial Soul
An enormous black bear totem manifests behind Wei Tianyang when he activates his Martial Soul against Sun Zhenshan 30.
Staff Combat and Projected Force
Wei Tianyang combines staff attacks with force projected from his fingers and palms 25 30.
- Ranged attacks: Sends a streak of force toward Wei Yi to test his sword technique, then uses palm force to halt the exchange 25.
- Defensive strikes: Shatters Sun Zhenshan’s fist force and follows with a massive staff phantom 30.
- Destructive power: Kills roughly a dozen attackers with one staff strike, carving a large trench through the ground 32.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dark-gold staff — An eyebrow-height weapon used against Sun Zhenshan and to clear the clan’s escape route from the gorge 30 32.
Relationships
- Wei Yi — His only son and chosen successor. Protects his education, supports his claim to the young master position, and guides his understanding of bloodline cultivation 1 17 22 23.
- Shen Qiulan — His wife and an important source of support for his leadership. He worries that her proposal to teach Wei Yi pill refining may distract their son from martial cultivation 25 26.
- Uncle Wu — Trusted servant sent to verify Wei Yi’s recovery. Reports the ambush against Wei Yi, prompting Wei Tianyang to investigate the Blackwater Bandits 17 29.
- The three Wei Clan elders — Powerful senior figures whose succession candidates challenge his son. They acknowledge Wei Yi’s position after his victory 18 22.
- Sun Zhenshan — Rival clan head and Martial King opponent. Wei Tianyang repeatedly obstructs his attempts to attack Wei Yi 29 30 31.
