Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Overlord Sect |
| Original Name | 霸王宗 |
| Organization Type | Martial cultivation sect 33 40 |
| Territory | Southern Great Chu Dynasty, where its influence exceeds that of the imperial government 40 |
| Standing | A supreme power above the dynasty’s first-rate clans 33 |
| Branches | Branch halls, branch academies, and an outer sect subsidiary academy divided into more than a dozen branch academies 40 |
| Membership | Several thousand disciples in the outer sect subsidiary academy alone, excluding those elsewhere 40 |
| First Appearance | Mentioned in Chapter 33; visited by Wei Yi in Chapter 40 33 40 |
Influence and Strength
- Southern dominance: The sect is described as the absolute overlord of the Great Chu Dynasty’s south. Even the imperial family avoids provoking it lightly 33.
- Standing above the great clans: Its power far exceeds that of the dynasty’s ten great clans, including the Wei Clan 33.
- Regional authority: Many Jiangnan powers consider offending the distant imperial government less dangerous than offending the Overlord Sect, whose reach makes escape difficult 40.
- Depth of personnel: Liu Zhenxun, a fifth-stage Martial Spirit, is only an outer sect branch dean. The subsidiary academy alone has dozens of people with comparable cultivation 40.
- Protection through status: Wei Yi seeks core discipleship because he believes that position would deter most enemies within the dynasty. This is his expectation, not a guarantee of protection from internal rivals 33.
Organization and Ranks
Disciple Hierarchy
| Rank | Position and Requirements |
|---|---|
| Outer disciple | Lowest-ranking disciple; membership provides access to sect training and eligibility for advancement 40. |
| Inner disciple / Full disciple | Outer disciples who pass the inner sect assessment become full disciples; unsuccessful candidates remain in the outer sect 40. |
| Core direct disciple | An exceptionally selective position. The sect has countless ordinary disciples but only a handful of core direct disciples, with selection described as one in ten thousand 33. |
Outer Sect Administration
- Subsidiary academy: A reserve training base for future full disciples, housing several thousand outer disciples 40 45.
- Branch academies: More than a dozen administrative divisions operate within the outer sect, each headed by a branch dean 40.
- Yi Dragon Branch Academy: The division assigned to Wei Yi and the other True Martial Academy recruits. Its dean, Liu Zhenxun, oversees several hundred outer disciples 40.
- Other branches: The sect also maintains branch halls and affiliated academies outside this subsidiary academy 40 42.
Recruitment and Promotion
Entry Routes
| Route | Details |
|---|---|
| Recommendations from outside powers | Nearly half of the subsidiary academy’s disciples enter through recommendations from academies and other organizations 40. |
| Branch recruitment | The remaining disciples are recruited through the sect’s branch halls, including outstanding martial artists selected from affiliated academies 40 42. |
| Personal selection by an elder | Elder Ximen personally requests Zhu Ling’er as a prospective disciple, securing her recommendation place in advance 36. |
True Martial Academy Recommendations
True Martial Academy receives ten recommendation places, allocated personally by its dean. These places grant entry to the outer sect subsidiary academy—not immediate inner discipleship 36 40.
| Student Year | Places in Wei Yi’s Recruitment Batch |
|---|---|
| Fourth year | Five 39 |
| Third year | Three 39 |
| Second year | Two: Wei Yi and Zhu Ling’er 39 |
- Wei Yi wins his recommendation by defeating Instructor Xu, a fourth-stage Great Martial Master, with one punch 37 38.
- Competition for the places is intense. Wei Yi earns 730,000 taels from seventy-three wagered challenges after offering to surrender his place if defeated 39 40.
- Zhu Yuanhe escorts the ten successful candidates to the sect, reaching its sphere of influence after four or five days of travel 40.
Inner Sect Assessment
- An assessment is scheduled one month after Wei Yi’s arrival 40.
- Passing promotes an outer disciple to full discipleship; failing leaves their existing outer disciple status unchanged 40.
- Strong cultivation does not ensure success. Zhao Yuanji remains an outer disciple after an unlucky previous assessment despite being widely considered strong enough for the inner sect 42.
- Wei Yi’s Game System makes passing the assessment a personal breakthrough quest, with advancement to the Great Martial Master realm as its reward. This reward is specific to Wei Yi, not a sect promotion benefit 40.
Training and Facilities
Cultivation Routine
- Outer disciples are not required to undertake missions or work; their primary task is cultivating until they can enter the inner sect 45.
- The outer sect’s training environment is inferior to the inner sect’s but substantially better than that available in most other places 46.
- Facilities include ordinary martial training equipment, fighting platforms, private sword practice rooms, and special training grounds 43 45 46.
Fighting Platforms and Private Duels
- Platform fighting is a routine part of outer sect life, used to settle disagreements, personal rivalries, and challenges 43.
- Private fights are permitted. Higher authorities generally do not intervene unless someone dies 42.
- Frequent fighting gives veteran disciples extensive practical experience, allowing them to overwhelm talented newcomers who lack comparable combat exposure 41 43.
Beast Soul Tower
The Beast Soul Tower provides combat training against captured beast souls that can revive after being killed 46.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Entry fee | 1,000 taels of silver per visit 46 |
| Training purpose | Honing martial techniques and gaining combat experience with relatively little danger 46 |
| Construction | Special formations sustain the beast souls indefinitely; only a handful of supreme powers in the dynasty possess the means to build such a tower 46 |
| Difficulty | Beast souls become stronger and more numerous on successive floors 47 |
| Typical performance | Outer disciples reach approximately the twentieth floor on average 46 |
| Thirtieth-floor benchmark | Fewer than ten outer disciples can reach this floor when Han Wenshu challenges Wei Yi 46 |
| Recorded achievement | Wei Yi clears forty-six floors in one attempt, greatly increasing his reputation 50 |
- Entrants register using their identity tokens, and a light screen displays their floor progress 46.
- Wei Yi discovers that defeating the beast souls grants martial skill experience through his Game System, making the tower especially valuable to him 47 49.
Outer Sect Factions
Competition for inner sect places produces numerous disciple-run groups. These factions are distinct from the sect’s formal branch administration 40 42.
| Faction | Leadership | Membership and Influence |
|---|---|---|
| Black Tiger Society | Zhao Yuanji | Several hundred members; one of the strongest outer sect groups. Zhao ranks among the outer sect’s top three and is known as one of its Two Tigers 42. |
| Liu Yun Gang | Liu Ruyun | Less powerful overall than the Black Tiger Society but more socially influential; over eighty percent of the outer sect’s female disciples belong to it 50. |
Black Tiger Society
- Three Tiger Generals: Disease Demon Tiger Lei Yuan, Smiling Tiger Xu Pingzheng, and Steel Claw Tiger Huo Tianlu. All three rank among the outer sect’s top fifty 42.
- Extortion of newcomers: Members demand 5,000 taels from each True Martial Academy recruit as a supposed protection fee. Their claim to represent all veteran disciples is challenged by Wei Yi 40 41.
- Retaliation: After the collectors are defeated, Huo Tianlu demands ten times the original fee and compulsory membership, offering a duel as the alternative 42.
- Limits of factional power: Even while considering revenge, the society must operate within the outer sect’s rules 45.
Notable Members and Associates
- Yuwen Hui — Sect elder and father of Yuwen Bei. The Sun Clan attempts to establish ties with him through his son 33.
- Elder Ximen — Personally requests Zhu Ling’er as a disciple before her entry into the sect 36.
- Liu Zhenxun — Fifth-stage Martial Spirit and dean of the Yi Dragon Branch Academy; gives the True Martial Academy recruits shared accommodation out of consideration for his friendship with Zhu Yuanhe 40.
- Wei Yi — Outer disciple whose victories over established veterans and forty-six-floor tower run rapidly make him famous 40 45 50.
- Zhu Ling’er — Outer disciple selected in advance by Elder Ximen; enters alongside Wei Yi 36 40.
- Yuwen Bei — Yuwen Hui’s second son, an alchemist, and a talented martial artist nurtured by the sect. His conflict with Wei Yi concerns the Crimson Crystal True Flame 33.
- Han Wenshu — Veteran disciple who placed twenty-ninth in the previous year’s outer sect competition and challenges Wei Yi in the Beast Soul Tower 46.
- Li Hanlun — Green Lake Academy recruit, one of the strongest three newcomers in his batch, and a member of the Liu Yun Gang 50.
- Lu Hu — Former ordinary disciple who left more than ten years earlier after failing to attain core discipleship; later introduces Wei Yi to the sect’s internal situation 34.
Story Role
Wei Yi’s Decision to Join
After obtaining the Crimson Crystal True Flame, Wei Yi chooses the Overlord Sect as a route to greater strength and a more secure position. Wei Tianyang warns him that Yuwen Bei’s family connections could expose him to covert retaliation inside the sect, but Wei Yi remains determined to enter 33.
Establishing Himself in the Outer Sect
Wei Yi and nine fellow True Martial Academy students enter the Yi Dragon Branch Academy as outer disciples. Their immediate confrontation with Black Tiger Society collectors escalates into Wei Yi’s duel with Huo Tianlu. His victory makes him famous throughout the outer sect and draws recruitment offers from other disciple factions 40 41 42 44 45.
Preparing for the Inner Sect
Wei Yi focuses on cultivation rather than faction membership. His Beast Soul Tower contest with Han Wenshu leads to a forty-six-floor run and another surge in reputation. He subsequently refuses Liu Ruyun’s personal invitation to join the Liu Yun Gang, maintaining that his goal is the inner sect rather than influence among outer disciples 46 47 49 50.
