Background

Black Owl was created by a civilization that devoted its entire strength to producing a highest-grade intelligent combat unit. Its design combined advanced technology with magic while allowing an operator without technical or magical training to control it through mental power or another unique energy 12.

The construct spent thousands of years in Apekus’s treasury, accumulating substantial energy reserves. Before departing, King Ghidorah specifically requested that Apekus prepare it. He activated the unit with psionic energy and used it to explore human settlements while keeping his enormous true body elsewhere 12 13 31.

After the original avatar’s disappearance, King Ghidorah deploys a later construct called Black Owl No. 2. He personally delivers it to Nuoyaji’s group and identifies it as his avatar, assigning it to accompany their campaign. Its precise manufacturing origin and technical relationship to the original unit are not established in the account of its introduction 45 143.

Appearance

  • Armor: A seamless, close-fitting black construct shell resembling a fitted robe, with no exposed skin or joints 12.
  • Markings: Extremely fine dark-gold magical patterns, normally almost invisible, which illuminate when energy circulates 12.
  • Faceplate: Smooth and fully enclosed, without openings for eyes, a mouth, or a nose 12.
  • Initial size: Described as palm-high when first released from the spatial device 12.
  • Voice: Processed into a gender-neutral, emotionally flat tone 19.
  • Movement: Capable of silent motion, though its joints sometimes produce faint mechanical scraping sounds 13 20.

Black Owl No. 2

  • Body: A humanoid construct made of black metal and another material Nuoyaji cannot identify; when motionless, it resembles a paused soldier 143.
  • Clothing: Appears entirely enveloped in a black robe while accompanying the party 143 149.
  • Head: Triangular, with a blue-lit slit across its face 146 152.
  • Voice: Speech emerges from the blue slit in its face 146.

Abilities & Skills

Remote Control and Sensory Relay

  • King Ghidorah can transfer his consciousness into Black Owl through a psionic connection and receive its sight, hearing, and touch 12 13.
  • The relay transmits physical sensations clearly, including the cold of Luoweida’s floodwater 13.
  • King Ghidorah can extend his own psionic energy through the avatar, as demonstrated when he examined Fuyila’s red stone 21.
  • Black Owl No. 2 likewise serves as King Ghidorah’s remotely controlled avatar while his true body remains elsewhere, including in the palace at Vagrian City 143 147.
  • Both avatars suffer abrupt sensory-link losses during underground investigations. For the original unit, the channel remains intact but its endpoint cannot be found; for No. 2, the sensory link vanishes completely, without an accompanying explanation of the mechanism 45 152.

Autonomous Operation and Memory

  • Autopilot supports simple instructions, including following, concealment, observation, and basic conversation 31 40.
  • Cached records allow King Ghidorah to review events that occurred while his consciousness was elsewhere 40.
  • Autonomous behavior is less flexible than direct control 40.
  • Black Owl requires no food and has no eating function 21 40.

Detection Systems

  • Environmental arrays detect life signs and magical fluctuations within dozens of kilometers and provide danger warnings 12.
  • Thermal detection, magical sensing, and sonar combine to map underground surroundings 28.
  • Scanners can penetrate surface rubble and identify faint vital signs beneath it 27.
  • Its visual system sees more clearly in darkness than in daylight; it also carries a lighting system 28 45.
  • Through Black Owl No. 2, King Ghidorah spreads his perception over every part of Dongping Village and determines that no ordinary villagers remain, only Salvation Society personnel 149.
  • No. 2’s sensory access allows him to detect inexplicable auras in the deepest part of an underground experimental facility 152.

Concealment and Disguise

  • Built-in concealment and disguise functions allow the unit to blend into crowds and avoid notice 12.
  • Black Owl moves through flooded Luoweida unseen and suppresses its presence while observing Nuoyaji 13 16.
  • It repeatedly vanishes directly before Fuyila’s eyes; the mechanism is not explained 22 25.
  • Concealment does not reliably defeat Fuyila’s senses: she detects its approach and later tracks it by scent despite its lack of biological tissue 19 25.

Combat and Physical Strength

  • Its eighth-tier strength is sufficient to handle most ordinary mortal threats; experts of that rank can preside over city-states and serve as high-level imperial combatants 12.
  • Black Owl repels three attacks from Fuyila, striking her back until she cannot rise 19.
  • It lifts heavy rocks and clears trapped miners from rubble with little effort 27.
  • Black Owl No. 2 blasts through multiple underground isolation layers made from high-strength materials and kicks a large, smoking hole through a heavy alloy door 152.

Energy Attacks

  • Through Black Owl No. 2, King Ghidorah forms and throws purplish-black spheres of light. A larger follow-up sphere detonates in warehouse ruins and produces a mushroom cloud 146.
  • He adjusts the attack’s output, explicitly judging the earlier blast insufficient before creating the larger sphere 146.

Language Translation

  • A built-in module translates the continent’s languages in real time, including those of humans, other races, and ancient monsters 12.

Personality

Black Owl’s speech and behavior under direct control express King Ghidorah’s personality rather than an established independent identity. Its neutral voice and unreadable faceplate conceal his curiosity, impatience, sarcasm, and reactions to the people he encounters 19 20.

Through the avatar, King Ghidorah often treats human affairs as entertainment, particularly Nuoyaji’s efforts to change the future. Nevertheless, he feeds Fuyila and frees trapped miners, even while describing such encounters as optional diversions or actions requiring no particular reason 16 20 27 40.

The same attitude continues through Black Owl No. 2. King Ghidorah regards the investigation as a “side story,” casually proposes ambushing Salvation Society personnel, and brushes aside the party’s incomplete preparations with assurances that he will carry them through the fighting. His confidence leaves Nuoyaji reluctant to insist on a detailed battle plan 146 147.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Surveying Luoweida

Black Owl enters flooded Luoweida, allowing King Ghidorah to inspect the destruction caused by his own storm. He observes ruined homes, closed workshops, hunger, and growing unrest. After entering Lina’s damaged home and frightening her, he leaves without approaching her or her feverish brother 13.

While continuing its survey, Black Owl senses a faint human presence approaching the city: Nuoyaji. King Ghidorah briefly turns the avatar toward the outskirts before returning to his exploration 14.

The avatar later becomes King Ghidorah’s vantage point for watching Nuoyaji. Through its senses, he witnesses the regressor offer assistance to the miners and begins following his attempts to avert Luoweida’s impending crisis 16 18.

Encounter with Fuyila

After King Ghidorah’s true body detects an unfamiliar presence, he redirects Black Owl toward an abandoned stone house. There, the avatar encounters Fuyila. Calling her a demon triggers a violent reaction, but Black Owl easily repels her attacks 18 19.

King Ghidorah subsequently questions her through the avatar, learns about her missing mother and pursuers, and offers food. On a rooftop near the Old Oak Inn, Black Owl examines her red stone and asks whether she knows Nuoyaji; she does not 20 21.

Although Fuyila initially resumes her journey south, she finds Black Owl again by following its scent. She later remains beside the construct during King Ghidorah’s absence, tries to feed it bread, and sleeps in the same abandoned house 22 25 40.

After King Ghidorah resumes control, Black Owl leaves the stone house without answering Fuyila’s question about whether it is departing. She decides to postpone her journey south for a few more days. Later, she quietly watches the avatar leave again while eating a potato 41 44.

Mine Rescue and Underground Discovery

Black Owl enters the collapsed mine through a ventilation shaft too narrow for humans. It digs out trapped miners, gathers thirteen living survivors near the blocked entrance, and deliberately makes footsteps to alert Nuoyaji and the rescuers outside 27.

Deeper underground, its sensors reveal extensive internal damage and an enormous pit emitting a slow pulse. King Ghidorah concludes that his storm has disturbed an ancient sleeping behemoth, but chooses not to awaken it 28.

Autopilot Surveillance

While King Ghidorah travels elsewhere, Black Owl continues operating independently. On returning after a day and a half, he reviews its cached observations of Nuoyaji securing official support, arranging grain supplies, and organizing relief work. His abrupt resumption of control also knocks the waiting Fuyila to the floor 31 40.

Loss of Contact

Black Owl later returns to the repaired mine and opens a gap leading into a small, apparently artificial space marked by ancient dark stains. As it prepares to step forward, its sensory image abruptly vanishes 44 45.

King Ghidorah finds that the psionic channel remains intact, without interruption or interference, but Black Owl’s endpoint no longer exists. Neither reconnecting nor creating a new link succeeds. Bewildered and furious, he summons a storm and flies toward the western mine; the cause of the disappearance remains unresolved 45.

Black Owl No. 2 and the Campaign

King Ghidorah later delivers another construct to Nuoyaji’s group, identifying it as his avatar and announcing that it will join their campaign. Called Black Owl No. 2, it enters the city alongside Nuoyaji, Chaluoke, Na’er, and Yifula. Nuoyaji accepts its presence as the addition of another top-tier combatant, though he remains puzzled by King Ghidorah’s intentions 143.

Through No. 2, King Ghidorah questions Nuoyaji about Chaluoke’s destruction of the Salvation Society headquarters in the previous timeline. Nuoyaji’s limited knowledge frustrates his efforts to uncover the underlying story. When Nuoleila reports that the people they are investigating intend to collect payment at Dongping Village the following day, No. 2 proposes gathering the others and ambushing them there 146.

No. 2 also destroys a warehouse with explosive energy spheres. After inspecting the ruins and judging the initial output too low, it throws a larger sphere that produces another explosion and a rising mushroom cloud. On returning, King Ghidorah casually confirms through the avatar that he blew up the warehouse 146 147.

The party subsequently prepares to move against the Salvation Society’s outlying base. King Ghidorah urges them onward through No. 2 while his true body rests in the palace at Vagrian City, confident that the others can handle the opposition 147.

Dongping Village Investigation

At Dongping Village, No. 2 accompanies Nuoyaji and Chaluoke during their questioning of a Salvation Society member. King Ghidorah extends his perception through the avatar across the entire village and discovers that none of its ordinary inhabitants remain; only the Society’s personnel are present 149.

The interrogation also concerns a handcart and cage associated with feeding an unidentified creature. No. 2 questions the captive about this practice. As Chaluoke approaches, the captive claims that the operation was conducted in cooperation with someone else 149.

Black Owl No. 2 later penetrates an underground experimental facility, reaching a wrecked corridor within its highest-security area. King Ghidorah examines the unfamiliar alloy construction and encounters creatures resembling combinations of different monsters 152.

Seeking the bottom level, No. 2 breaks through high-strength isolation layers and kicks through a heavy alloy door. King Ghidorah observes that the material relies on technology rather than mana reinforcement. The avatar descends into an artificially expanded cavern approximately thirty meters high, where it detects inexplicable auras 152.

There, it discovers a grayish-white egg taller than its own body, patterned with flowing pale-blue light and surrounded by luminous rings rotating at different speeds. Something moves within the egg. Immediately afterward, No. 2’s sensory link vanishes completely, startling King Ghidorah’s true body in mid-flight. The passage does not establish what happened to the construct 152.

Relationships

  • King Ghidorah — Owner, namer, and direct controller. Black Owl lets him interact with human-scale surroundings without exposing his true body 12 13. He later uses Black Owl No. 2 to accompany Nuoyaji’s campaign and investigate the Salvation Society while remaining physically elsewhere 143 147 149.
  • Apekus — Supplied the construct from his treasury. King Ghidorah repeatedly questions its advertised quality after Fuyila defeats its concealment and the avatar later goes offline 12 19 25 45.
  • Fuyila — Initially attacks Black Owl, then becomes a recurring companion after receiving food. She tracks it by scent and attempts to share bread while it is on autopilot 19 20 25 40. She postpones her southward journey while staying in the stone house and continues watching the avatar’s departures 41 44.
  • Nuoyaji — Principal surveillance target. Black Owl records his relief efforts and anonymously assists the mine rescue by making footsteps audible beyond the rubble 16 27 40. Through Black Owl No. 2, King Ghidorah becomes an overt companion in his campaign, questions him about his previous-life knowledge, and participates in the Salvation Society investigation 143 146 149.
  • Chaluoke — Campaign companion of Black Owl No. 2. King Ghidorah seeks information about his previous-life destruction of the Salvation Society headquarters, and the two participate in the Dongping Village operation 143 146 149.
  • Na’er and Yifula — Members of the party that enters the city with Black Owl No. 2 and prepares for the subsequent operation 143 147.
  • Nuoleila — Provides the information about a payment collection at Dongping Village that prompts No. 2’s proposal for an ambush 146.
