Background / History

Valen's Apprentice

Thales was Valen's youngest disciple on Planet Bernard. Drawn by the unknown beyond his world, he left his family to accompany Valen aboard the solar-sail spacecraft Starry Sky Butterfly, hoping to explore the starry sky while learning Wizard's transcendent language and spacecraft operation. 541

When Valen and other wizards ascended to the Heavenly Realm, Thales was left behind with gifts from Suru and Ilena: a Bead of Wisdom and a magic flying carpet. Valen also gave him a scroll for traversing the starry sky, expressing confidence in his disciple's future. 544

Arrival in the Heavenly Realm

As a First-Rank Mage, Thales could not independently draw on the magic net to ascend and needed external help. After reaching the City of Academia, he survived through peripheral work such as converting magic stones and refining materials, then spent his earnings on academic journals, secondhand monographs, and discarded research papers. 546 547 548

His self-directed study of Mechanics of Magic and electrical research led him to compare electrostatic interaction with universal gravitation. He concluded that electrostatic force followed the same mathematical form as gravity and recognized that the existing mechanics system could apply to electricity. 548

Personality

Thales is driven by curiosity and a desire to explore the unknown. His decision to leave home for the stars, then pursue research despite poverty and limited status in the City of Academia, reflects an intense commitment to learning. 541 547 548

He is conscientious about credit and collaboration. After moving into Valen's tower, he named Valen as corresponding author on his paper; he also attempted to share recognition for magnetic field-line research with Bru and Allen despite their insistence that the core discoveries were his own. 549 550

Though often absorbed enough in experiments to appear disheveled, Thales is sensitive to the implications of his work. He remained quiet during early controversy over his wave conjecture, recognizing its lack of decisive evidence, and later opposed the Wizard World's policy of enslaving deities on ethical grounds. 552 628 637

Abilities & Skills

Electromagnetism

Thales established electromagnetism as a major field of magical research, beginning with electrostatic interaction and expanding into magnetic effects, electromagnetic induction, field theory, optics, and wave research.

  • Formulated the Thales Law of Electrostatic Gravitation, establishing electrostatic action at a distance. 549
  • Identified the relationship between electric current and magnetism after observing a magnetic needle deflect. 549
  • Proposed magnetic field lines and documented five electromagnetic phenomena in Electromagnetism and Magnetic Field Lines. 550
  • Developed concepts including electric potential, voltage, electromagnetic rotation, induced electromotive force, and magnetic flux. 549 551
  • Invented the first generator. 550 551
  • Discovered the magneto-optical effect and investigated the connection between electricity, magnetism, and light. 551 552

Electromagnetic Field Magic

Upon reaching Legendary rank, Thales formed the electromagnetic field spell model, establishing a Mindscape of lightning, magnetic disturbances, electric fields, and magnetic fields. 553

  • Can manipulate nearby electric charges and potential differences to produce lightning. 553
  • Can fly by controlling electromagnetic fields. 553
  • Created the Legendary Treasure Tool Invisible Lines of Force, which grants powerful control over electromagnetism. 558
  • His original Mindscape relied on the hypothetical aether; Ace's Special Relativity lecture caused it to shatter and solidify. 593

Wave Theory

Thales proposed that electromagnetic phenomena—and potentially the microscopic world itself—could be understood through waves. His early treatise was considered highly original but controversial because it lacked empirical proof. 551 552

With Blainia, he later developed the wave equation to address criticism of his matter-wave research. The work restored his shattered Mindscape and rebirthed his demiplane. 642

Spellcasting and Piloting

Before gaining Magic Talent, Thales was a mage reliant on spellbooks and prepared spell slots.

  • Had seven spell slots and used Secondary Haste during his early travels. 541
  • Used Levitation and Elasticity spells to descend safely from Valen's aircraft. 543
  • Learned to operate the Starry Sky Butterfly under Valen's guidance. 541

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Starry Sky Butterfly — solar-sail spacecraft used during his journey with Valen; Thales later sought magic stones to power it himself. 541 544
  • Bead of Wisdom — gifted by Suru. 544
  • Magic flying carpet — gifted by Ilena. 544
  • Star-traversal scroll — given by Valen after he ascended to the Heavenly Realm. 544
  • Spellbook — upgraded by Valen with several practical spell models after Thales became a Senior Archmage Apprentice. 543
  • Bayern Astrology Award items — two custom gold magic items: one for danger precognition and one for defense. 551
  • Ace Magic Award medal and artifact — the medal permanently carries one Six-ring Epic Spell and two Five-ring Legendary Spells; Ace also crafted him a magic-like artifact. 557
  • Invisible Lines of Force — Thales's Legendary Treasure Tool for manipulating electromagnetism. 558

Relationships

  • Valen — mentor and teacher. Valen took Thales into the starry sky, taught him Wizard knowledge, upgraded his spellbook, and later supported his academic rise. 541 543 549
  • Blainia — initially his secretary, later his principal research collaborator and wife. Together they developed electromagnetic field theory, the Blainia-Thales equations, and the wave equation. 553 557 558 642

  • Bayern — senior scholar and award presenter. Bayern recognized Thales's electromagnetics achievements, crafted his Bayern Astrology Award items, and was initially cautious of his field theory. 550 551 553
  • Bru — fellow electromagnetism researcher whose work on magnetic needles and electrical experimentation contributed to Thales's investigations. 548 550
  • Allen — collaborator whose hypotheses helped lead to Thales's induced-current research; later recognized Thales's originality in magnetic field-line theory. 550
  • Leighton — fellow researcher in electricity and electrolysis whose work informed Thales's continuing studies. 549 551
  • Thales's family — reunited with him during the Ace Magic Award ceremony after Ace brought them to the Heavenly Realm. 557

Story Role / Major Arcs

Starry Sky Journey

Thales begins as Valen's young mage disciple, leaving Planet Bernard and his family to explore the starry sky. His ambition persists after being separated from Valen and forced to support himself in the City of Academia. 541 544 547

Dawn of Electrics

His research into conductors, insulators, static electricity, and mechanics culminates in the discovery of electrostatic interaction. Ace recognizes the breakthrough as the beginning of the field of “Electrics” and offers Thales a choice between immediate mage advancement and the broader potential of Wizardhood. 547 548

Thales chooses Magic Talent and rapidly develops electromagnetism through research on current, magnetism, magnetic field lines, induction, and generators. His work transforms electrology from a niche subject into a major academic discipline. 548 549 550

Field Theory and Academic Recognition

Thales receives the first Bayern Astrology Award and later the first Ace Magic Award for his pioneering contributions. He joins the Supreme Council before becoming Legendary, then advances after defining the electromagnetic field and proposing the aether as its medium. 551 552 553 557

Working with Blainia, he develops the Blainia-Thales equations, unifying electricity, magnetism, and optics. Their work overturns the earlier action-at-a-distance explanation and marks the “Dawn of Magic.” 557 558

Shattered Mindscape and Rebirth

Ace's Special Relativity theory undermines the necessity of aether, causing Thales's aether-based Mindscape to shatter and solidify. Blainia remains beside him as he struggles with the apparent end of his advancement. 593 594

After later research into matter waves, Thales and Blainia establish a wave equation. This restores his Mindscape and rebirths his demiplane, earning him the name Phoenix. 642

Opposition to Deity Enslavement

During the Wizard World's energy crisis, Thales argues against treating deities as disposable tools. He advocates assimilation and coexistence rather than exploitation, enslavement, or destruction, but his position remains unpopular among most wizards. 628 633 637

Notable Quotes

“I wish to gain magical aptitude and become a High-Level Wizard Apprentice. The power of a mage can never truly be separated from the magic net. Only wizards possess more infinite possibilities.” 548

“We can choose a more humane approach, granting them a certain degree of freedom and allowing them to join our ranks. Directly exploiting them like this is simply too cruel.” 637
