Background / History
Childhood and Adoption
Kebi’s biological father was a soldier under Odin III who died fighting the Jatu. His mother also died early, and Kebi entered Odin III’s household as a newborn. Believing he could not have children, Odin III adopted him. Little Odin was born a year later, leading people to regard Kebi’s arrival as a divine blessing upon the family 10.
Raised comfortably in Odinburg’s fortress, Kebi developed an affectionate relationship with his adoptive father and younger brother. He later joined the Order of the Falcon and worked toward full knighthood 10 244.
Meeting Dick and Xiya
While home on leave, Kebi volunteered to eliminate drowners disrupting local fishing. He initially dismissed Dick as an ineffective witcher and became immediately interested in Xiya. Determined to prove himself, he charged the monsters alone, only to be knocked down and nearly killed. Dick rescued him with crossbow fire 4 5.
Embarrassed by his failure, Kebi recovered Dick’s discarded crossbow and subsequently offered him a commission to investigate apparent ghost activity in Odin III’s fortress. He vouched for Dick and Xiya before the guards and accompanied their investigation of the maids’ quarters 6 7 8 10.
Failed Courtship and Jatu Ambush
Before joining Odin III’s expedition, Kebi offered Xiya an expensive necklace commissioned through the jeweler Val. She refused, explaining that her long lifespan made a relationship with a mortal a source of eventual heartbreak 18.
The expedition was ambushed by roughly two hundred Jatu cavalry. Kebi returned wounded with a small remnant of the force, reporting that Odin III and Xiya had been captured. Despite his injuries, he guided Dick toward Stony Town to rescue her 24.
After finding Dick and Xiya embracing, Kebi accepted that they were better suited to one another and promised not to interfere. He then helped gather horses and locate the murdered villagers’ bodies before the group returned to Odinburg 28.
Defense of Odinburg
With Odin III absent, Kebi took command of Odinburg’s defenses. He credited Dick for bringing back the captured horses and ordered that his contribution be recorded and rewarded 29 30.
Facing more than three hundred Jatu with barely over a hundred defenders, Kebi rallied his soldiers, assigned Fisher to the west wall, and promised twenty Kelang per day of resistance and two hundred Kelang to the family of each fallen soldier. He also supplied Dick with replacement armor intended to conceal his identity as a witcher if the city fell 37 38.
The siege forced him to order archers to fire on a battering ram despite villagers being used as human shields. He led by shooting first, then fought on the battlements as the defenders suffered heavy losses. His existing shoulder wound worsened, but he continued directing the survivors 40 43 46.
Kebi prepared for a final mounted charge before Queen Meve’s relief force arrived. After the Jatu defeat, he helped the Order of the Falcon capture the survivors and was formally knighted by the queen 47 48.
After the Siege
Kebi fulfilled his compensation pledge to the fallen soldiers’ families and rewarded Dick with fifty gold crowns. His attempt to grant Dick the title “Dick of Odinburg” ended awkwardly when Dick explained that he already held a title from Queen Meve 51 53.
Recognizing that knighthood had not erased his weaknesses, Kebi began further sword training under Fisher. He also arranged replacement equipment for Dick, offered him a future position as Odinburg’s deputy captain, and later gave him the Jatu warhorse that Dick named Spotty 55 56 57 62.
Service Beside Queen Meve
By the time Dick reached Ravenstern City, Kebi had become knight commander and had risked his life taking a lance thrust meant for Meve during a Jatu campaign. The queen discussed granting him a barony—or a viscounty if he distinguished himself further—and making him Odinburg’s new lord after Odin III lost his title. These remained prospective rewards in their conversation 229.
Dick gave Kebi two Dragon Tear Potions before the campaign against Manslayer’s army. Burd III subsequently smashed through the royal cavalry and left Kebi critically injured. One potion saved him and strengthened his body; he used the remaining vial to rescue the gravely wounded Duke Amara 240 243 244 248.
King Luca’s Arrest Order
After Meve’s death, Kebi encountered Dick and Xiya near the Mist Swamp alongside Fisher, Tatum, and the Shadow Centurions. He explained that King Luca had ordered him to arrest Dick, but suggested allowing his exhausted friend to rest. Dick interpreted Kebi’s conduct as merely going through the motions 291.
Tatum instead settled the encounter through a swordsmanship duel and allowed Dick and Xiya to pass after conceding. Kebi then rode away with Tatum and Fisher; Tatum stated that he would stay in Odinburg 291 292.
Appearance
- Build and face: A young man with a thin face, slightly taller than average 4 5.
- Early attire: Light blue armor, a longsword at his waist, and a warhorse in pale barding 4.
- Later appearance: A darker complexion and a prominent scar across his right cheek after campaigning with Meve 229.
- Royal service armor: A full suit of azure armor with a raised visor when receiving Dick at the palace 230.
Personality
Initially proud and inexperienced, Kebi places considerable importance on his noble standing and anticipated knighthood. His confidence leads him to underestimate drowners, while his sheltered upbringing leaves him slow to recognize Dick’s teasing. He also initially insists that Little Odin should choose a partner of comparable status and ability rather than love a servant 4 5 7 10 11.
Responsibility during the siege makes him more considerate and decisive. He acknowledges his fear, refuses to abandon the defenders, and follows through on compensation for bereaved families. Nevertheless, ordering attacks through civilian human shields and witnessing Carter’s suffering visibly distress him 37 38 40 43 51.
His knightly principles are sincere: he cannot bring himself to kill an enemy envoy and later declares himself willing to die for Meve. He is less comfortable with court politics, carefully withholding comment when the queen discusses her brother and succession concerns 39 229.
Kebi also retains a boastful streak. He tells Vanessa that he killed half the drowners and saved Dick’s life, reversing what actually happened. Meve later teases him about the claim, making him blush 5 152 229.
