Background

Childhood and Adoption

Xiya was born in a remote village in the Bacchus Empire. At eight months old, she lost control of her fire magic and burned the settlement down, killing its inhabitants and her parents. Barbara found her as the sole survivor, beside her parents’ remains and a parchment recording her name and birth date 263.

Barbara adopted Xiya and altered her spell pathways to suppress her dangerous fire affinity. She also placed a blood-red, rose-shaped formation on Xiya’s leg to monitor fluctuations in her fire elements 263.

Xiya grew up under Barbara’s care and studied at the Magic Academy. Other children sometimes called her a harbinger of disaster. At fifteen, she traveled to the Bacchus Empire under the pretext of studying abroad and discovered what had happened to her birthplace 262 295.

Posting to Odinburg

The Academy assigned Xiya to Odinburg to gain experience alongside a witcher and deal with local monsters. Her assigned partner was Dick, whose predecessor’s laziness and mistreatment of ordinary people quickly earned her contempt 2 17.

Although initially attracted to his appearance, she rejected his conduct. Her opinion changed as he began taking commissions, learning alchemy, and risking his life to protect others 35.

Appearance

  • Eyes and hair: Clear brown eyes and dark-brown hair falling over her shoulders 2.
  • Usual clothing: A tasteful, dark dress; her traveling dress in the second playthrough has a fitted waist 2 453.
  • Casual clothing: Warm yellow linen pajamas patterned with small bears 15.
  • Magical mark: A blood-red rose on her leg, actually Barbara’s monitoring formation rather than an ordinary decorative mark 263.
  • After the fire rampage: Her hair burns away completely. She initially wears a wig during recovery; within a few days, her natural hair has grown more than ten centimeters 249 254 272.
  • During magical instability: Lava-like markings appear beneath her skin, accompanied by sulfurous vapor, burning eyes, and—in severe episodes—flames surrounding her body 249 274 287 290.

Personality

Xiya is compassionate and strongly believes that those with power should protect ordinary people. At their first encounter, she confronts Dick because she believes he is abducting a child. Even after falling in love with him, she continues encouraging him to hunt monsters and preserve his willingness to defend the weak 2 254 270.

Her affection is practical as well as openly expressed. She brings Dick food, teaches him alchemy, works through exhaustion to prepare equipment, and refuses to abandon him when Odinburg’s defenses appear doomed. She also seeks a direct answer about his feelings rather than leaving their relationship unspoken 3 14 31 47 54.

She has a prideful and self-conscious side. She conceals her uncertainty about successfully making a Dimeritium Bomb because she does not want Dick to look down on her, and later wears a wig because she fears appearing unattractive to him 34 254.

The destruction caused by her powers leaves her deeply burdened by guilt. After injuring others and seeing repeated attempts to save her endanger her companions, she calls herself a harbinger of disaster and asks Dick to leave her behind 295.

Abilities & Skills

Lightning Magic

Xiya’s lightning affinity is exceptionally rare, strengthened by Barbara’s childhood modifications to her spell pathways 24 263.

  • Lightning Strike Spell: Produces blue-violet bolts that combine into a powerful torrent. She uses it to interrupt the Broom Witch’s attack on Dick and blast the monster into a courtyard wall 35.
  • Battlefield support: Odin III recruits her to counter a possible Jatu priest’s Bloodlust spell 18.
  • Limit: Following her advancement to a full-fledged sorceress, fire-element backlash makes her lightning element sluggish and prevents her from casting lightning magic 240.

Fire Magic

Xiya’s fire affinity awakened in infancy. Barbara suppressed it, but it reemerged after the events in Dick’s courtyard 47 263.

  • Fireballs: Uses handheld fireballs against monsters, including giant mantises attacking Dick 47.
  • Chantless casting: As a full sorceress, summons two fireballs larger than braziers without an incantation and merges them into stronger projectiles 245.
  • Destructive output: Burns a transformed berserker to ash and charcoal before it can struggle 245.
  • Loss of control: Her flames can spread across an entire camp and threaten nearby settlements. During one rampage, she kills innocent soldiers and laborers 249 295.

Magical Detection

Xiya can sense disturbances in surrounding magic and investigate barriers 35.

  • Detects unusual magical agitation outside Dick’s courtyard 35.
  • Creates a small, glowing probe that stops at the boundary of a warding spell, revealing the obstruction 35.

Alchemy and Magical Equipment

Xiya maintains a laboratory and teaches Dick how to use its tools and ingredients 14 15 16.

  • Potion preparation: Demonstrates Swallow Potion production using an Academy-developed, energy-stone heating device 16.
  • Bomb making: Successfully prepares a Dimeritium Bomb on her first attempt despite being exhausted 31 34.
  • Laboratory care: Keeps light-sensitive experimental materials behind closed curtains 15.
  • Equipment projects: Arranges a custom witcher medallion for Dick with assistance from Mary and Barbara 273.

Physical and Casting Limitations

  • Ordinary physical resilience: Exhausting missions affect her more severely than they affect a witcher. She explains that sorcerers are vulnerable if a skilled warrior closes the distance 15 31.
  • Dependence on ambient magic: Sorcerers cannot store mana directly as witchers do. Dimeritium can prevent them from communicating with magical energy and leave them as vulnerable as ordinary people 31.
  • Overcasting: Casting while depleted causes her to faint and risks lasting damage to her magical pathways 35 36.
  • Recovery restrictions: After her camp rampage, she must avoid spellcasting while her magical meridians heal 254.

Curse and Prophecy

Fire of the Nine Hells

Lady Diana identifies Xiya’s condition as the Fire of the Nine Hells, a curse attributed to a high-ranking deity of the Nine Hells 300.

  • The Academy initially suspects an ancient demon may have tampered with her origin circuits during childhood; this is presented as an inference, not an established account of how she was cursed 270.
  • A ritual to investigate her condition produces painful, lava-like veins and sulfurous vapor 274.
  • Mary and Barbara warn that the runic restraint on her power may eventually fail 280.
  • Dick twice stops an uncontrolled episode by enduring her flames and embracing her until she regains awareness; this calms her but does not remove the curse 249 290.
  • The Well of the Moon’s divine water fails to cleanse her. Diana concludes that the power behind the curse exceeds what she had anticipated 300.

Madigan’s Prophecy

Madigan’s prophecy associates Xiya with a world-destroying disaster. When Barbara later asks him to divine a way to save her, his crystal ball shatters, showing countless images of Xiya laughing amid flames 263.

  • Mercenaries pursue her as the “World-Destroying Witch,” with some seeking a bounty for delivering her alive for magical research 286.
  • The Church of the Eternal Fire attempts to arrest her and take her to Archbishop Duncan in Free City 290.
  • The prophecy and her actual history of uncontrolled destruction intensify her fear that she endangers everyone around her 295.

Equipment and Gifts

Personal Items

  • Gold necklace: A gift from Dick, accepted and worn despite noblewomen mocking its crude appearance 233 270.
  • Defensive amulet: Emits an earth-yellow protective light. It cracks during the fall into the underground pool, weakening its protection 295.
  • Wig: Worn temporarily after losing her hair in the fire rampage 254.

Gifts to Dick

  • Alchemy supply case: Left behind when she returns to the Academy. She persuades Barbara to work overnight preparing potions, sword oils, a Dimeritium Bomb, and Dancing Star bombs for his future hunts 59.
  • Lynx-embroidered witcher pouch: Given with the supply case; Xiya stitches the lynx herself and instructs Dick to activate the pouch with blood 59.
  • Custom lynx medallion: Opens to reveal their photograph and contains a three-by-three-by-three-meter storage space. Made with Dark Night Meteoric Iron and rare energy stones, it requires Dick’s blood to activate and is designed to withstand her losing control 273.

Relationships

  • Dick — Assigned monster-hunting partner, later lover and husband. His rescue of her from the Jatu helps transform her distrust into affection; they marry after Diana’s attempt to remove her curse fails 2 28 35 300 301.
  • Barbara — Adoptive mother and magical mentor. Barbara raises her, modifies her spell pathways, monitors her condition, and seeks help for the danger surrounding her powers 17 263.
  • Kebi — Rejected suitor and ally. Xiya declines his expensive necklace because she expects a sorceress’s nearly five-hundred-year lifespan to make a relationship with a mortal end painfully 18.
  • Mary — Headmistress of the Magic Academy. Organizes the investigation into Xiya’s condition and directs her toward Diana and the Well of the Moon 270 274 280.
  • Lady Diana — Attempts to remove her curse, then arranges and officiates her wedding to Dick 300 301.
  • Birth parents — Killed during her infant fire awakening. They leave a record of her name and birth date near her cradle 263.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Odinburg Partnership and Jatu Captivity

Xiya initially follows Dick because she suspects him of abducting Little Tom. After seeing evidence that he protected the boy from a Broom Witch, she begins accompanying him on monster investigations and helping with his alchemical studies 2 3 10 14 16.

She joins Odin III’s expedition against the Jatu and is captured after the force is ambushed. A Jatu priest keeps her alive to study her rare lightning magic. Dick infiltrates the camp, kills her captor, and frees her; she embraces him in relief 18 24 27 28.

The Broom Witch and Defense of Odinburg

While delivering a newly completed Dimeritium Bomb, Xiya discovers that Dick is trapped behind a ward. She forces herself to cast Lightning Strike despite her exhaustion, enabling his survival but breaking Barbara’s formation and disrupting her own magical balance 34 35 36 263.

During the siege, she supports Dick with fireballs and refuses to flee without him. Afterward, their relationship becomes explicit when he tells her he wants them to stay alive and well together. She subsequently returns to the Academy, leaving supplies and a letter asking him to remember that promise 47 54 59.

Report to the Witcher Order

Xiya reports Dick’s allegedly lawless conduct in Odinburg, prompting an internal Witcher Order trial. The proceedings include accusations of abusing townspeople, neglecting monster-hunting duties, killing mercenaries while drunk, and suspected child trafficking with monsters; the accusations are not themselves proof of guilt 96.

Reunion and Magical Crisis

After learning that Dick has arrived, Xiya petitions to join the Northern Kingdoms’ army and reunites with him at Queen Meve’s gathering. By this time, her advancement has left her unable to use lightning and struggling to control greatly strengthened fire magic 231 232 240.

Her power later erupts across the military camp. Dick crosses the flames and embraces her until the rampage stops, then takes her back to the Academy. During her recovery, she urges him to accept a commission at the Great Inland Lake rather than remain constantly at her bedside 249 254.

Flight to Noldor Forest

Following the Academy’s investigation, Dick escorts Xiya toward the Well of the Moon. Mercenaries and Church forces pursue her, while repeated spellcasting worsens her condition. After a fall leaves her injured underground, her guilt becomes overwhelming and she asks him to abandon her 280 286 290 293 294 295.

They eventually reach Diana, but the divine water cannot lift the curse. Xiya comforts Dick and asks him to marry her 298 300.

Wedding and Disappearance

Diana arranges their wedding in Noldor Forest, with elves and dryads celebrating the marriage. The following morning, Xiya’s left hand begins crumbling into crimson grains. She kisses Dick, tells him to live well, and disappears into red starlight 301.

Her disappearance is later distinguished from death. The Lady of the Lake says she is safe but cannot locate her; Medusa subsequently confirms that she is alive in the Nine Hells and directs Dick toward Free City. His search eventually takes him into Hell itself 321 392 401.

Alternate Timeline and Second Playthrough

In a vision of the original timeline, Xiya attempts to stop the original Dick but is defeated by him and the Broom Witch, bound, and carried into the Black Forest. Her ultimate fate in that sequence is not shown 221.

During Dick’s later journey through Hell, a monster uses Xiya’s appearance to lure him into a trap. The apparent reunion is an illusion, not the discovery of the real Xiya 428.

When Dick returns to the beginning with his skills intact, he encounters apprentice Xiya again while escorting Little Tom. She responds to his embrace but tells him that becoming her partner requires him to devote himself to slaying monsters 453.
