Background
Geralt was born in Noldor Forest. Diana, the Moon Goddess, raised him for a short time and is considered his foster mother. Dean Mary reveals this connection as a secret, asking Dick and his companion not to disclose it 280.
He became the pupil of Vesemir, head of the School of the Coyote. Despite his imposing appearance and considerable reputation, he was still under fifty when Vesemir teased him for becoming absorbed in romantic troubles 69 104.
According to Dick’s memories of the game, Geralt earned the title Geralt of Sarleon after completing a commission concerning the king of Sarleon’s daughter, who had become a striga. His subsequent fame as a swordsman brought him a steady stream of witcher commissions 49.
During an earlier monster-hunting contract, Geralt rescued Puck, an orphaned boy of five or six who possessed the Blood of the Source. He placed the boy with a farming family, but later returned to find the village’s inhabitants dead following a ghoul attack. He subsequently noticed that Archbishop Duncan resembled Puck and used a similar blinking ability, though he initially lacked proof of the connection 132. Duncan eventually confirmed to Dick that he was Puck, Geralt’s adopted son 395.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, muscular, and powerfully built, standing 185 cm 69 134 324.
- Hair: White, with silvery-white eyelashes and a beard noted in later scenes 95 321 326.
- Face: Handsome, with sharply defined features and a habitually stern or expressionless look 95 130.
- Scars: His torso bears numerous crisscrossing scars from past battles 235 324.
- Voice: Deep, gravelly, and sometimes described as a smoky rasp 304 310 315.
- Armor detail: His armor includes a wolf’s-head engraving 318.
Personality
Geralt is reserved, blunt, and outwardly cold, but dependable once he accepts someone as a friend. His early disdain for Dick gives way to warmer companionship after Dick helps him at Longsong Harbor. He later places considerable trust in Dick’s ability to survive dangerous battles 129 133 315.
His approach to monsters is not indiscriminate. He argues that an intelligent green dragon which has killed no people should be allowed to apologize and compensate the villagers rather than be slain. He also discourages Dick from exterminating the surviving wolves after a battle, warning that excessive killing would upset the forest’s ecological balance 132 328. This restraint does not extend equally to hostile mercenaries: during Dick’s trial, he agrees with the view that forceful retaliation helps preserve respect for witchers 97.
Little Yennefer brings out a markedly affectionate side of him. He fusses over her safety, comforts her after exhausting spells, and repeatedly tries to repair their strained relationship. His insistence that his other entanglements are merely “friendships” contrasts with his susceptibility to flirtation and the jealousy those encounters provoke 130 133 134 138 143.
Geralt is proud of his swordsmanship and enjoys praise. Dick’s superior physical power unsettles him even after his own breakthrough, although the narration explicitly notes that he means Dick no harm 130 326. He also has a mischievous streak, concealing his ownership of the Lady of the Lake’s Sword and helping Russell mislead Dick about the pain of Secondary Mutation 320 324.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Sword Qi
An acclaimed sword master, Geralt is ranked alongside Vesemir as joint second in the Witcher Order before Secondary Mutation 316.
- Full-blade reinforcement: Covers his entire sword in white Sword Qi, rather than coating only its tip 98.
- Defensive swordplay: Spins his blade into a continuous screen that intercepts viper venom. The Sword Qi also prevents the venom from corroding the weapon 138.
- Precision attacks: Uses agile evasions and counterattacks to break a mutated soldier captain’s protection, then wounds the groin and backs of the knees 141.
- Sustained output: Maintains Sword Qi throughout prolonged combat, displaying stamina that impresses Dick 158.
- Sword Qi projection: After Secondary Mutation, releases a visible slash that travels five or six meters over the lake 325.
- Limits: A powerful counterpunch from the mutated captain knocks him backward. He is also physically overpowered when attempting to stop Dick’s berserk attacks 141 316.
Signs
Geralt uses witcher Signs alongside his swordsmanship, with Fire Signs becoming a documented focus of his later advancement 246 324.
- Fire Signs: Works with Vesemir to melt a frozen lake during the battle against the Snake Cult 246.
- Post-mutation fire attack: Creates an enormous fireball approximately one meter across, producing a cloud of steam when it strikes the lake 325.
- Casting interval: Cannot immediately recast a Sign during the viper ambush, forcing him to defend with Sword Qi instead 138.
Witcher Physique and Senses
His School of the Coyote training emphasizes balanced physical and magical capabilities, although his physique exceeds the school’s usual standard 25 325.
- Strength and mobility: Carries Little Yennefer while sprinting ahead of the others across a collapsing bridge 136.
- Enhanced perception: Activates Witcher Senses to locate a concealed humanoid presence in undergrowth 327.
- Sensory limits: Acknowledges that his senses are less acute than those of School of the Lynx witchers. His vision also fails to follow the Higher Vampire’s movements during the castle confrontation 137 326.
- Secondary Mutation: Raises his physique from nearly twice an ordinary person’s to roughly three times that baseline 325.
- Physical ceiling: Little Yennefer judges his swordsmanship to be approximately equal to Dick’s after mutation, but Dick’s much stronger physique makes his Sword Qi substantially more powerful 326.
Monster Knowledge and Fieldwork
- Intelligent creatures: Recognizes negotiation and compensation as alternatives to killing a dragon 132.
- Monster identification: Identifies Ralf as a Higher Vampire and questions whether Syanna is his captive or food source 310.
- Centipede behavior: Explains the habits of White-Headed Widow Centipedes while planning how to obtain eggs without exhausting the breeding population 323.
- Coordinated combat: Uses his sword as a launching platform for Dick, helping him reach an airborne Broom Witch 327.
Equipment & Property
- Lady of the Lake’s Sword — A divine silver sword bestowed on him before Dick’s visit to the goddess. Its blade bears intricate patterns with a continuously flowing sheen 320.
- Dragon-tear-reinforced silver sword — Geralt confirms that dragon tear powder was incorporated into his silver sword to improve its durability 142.
- Conch communicator — Worn around his neck and used to contact Little Yennefer from Professor Seir’s laboratory 323.

- Improvised weaponry — Can channel Sword Qi through an ordinary object, including a broken pine stool leg when rushing to help during the palace disturbance 235.
Relationships

- Little Yennefer — His girlfriend and principal romantic partner. Their affection persists through arguments over his other relationships; both express a fondness for children, though witcher infertility remains a painful barrier 132 134 326.
- Alice — Little Yennefer’s close friend and Geralt’s other lover. Her feelings for him contribute to the couple’s difficulties, and she later accompanies them to Kaer Morhen 132 223 224.
- Dick — Fellow witcher, eventual superior, and trusted friend. Their initially cool relationship develops into mutual support, teasing, and combat cooperation 129 133 318 320 327.
- Russell — Fellow witcher who becomes a close friend during their travels and shared work. The two later collaborate in a prank on Dick 321 324.

- Diana — Foster mother who briefly raised him in Noldor Forest 280.
- Lady of the Lake — Divine benefactor and former intimate acquaintance. Geralt asks Dick not to tell Little Yennefer about their past and declines the goddess’s invitation to stay during their later visit 318 320 321.
- Elderly cook — A woman freed from an eighty-year monster curse. Geralt agrees to employ her at Corvo Bianco after Little Yennefer offers her a home 328.

Notable Quotes
“I think, since that green dragon can take human form, it must be an intelligent creature. If he sincerely apologizes to the villagers and pays some compensation, that should settle the matter.” 132
“Russell, you’ve seen Dick get hurt, but have you ever seen him truly lose?” 315
“You didn’t ask.”
— Explaining why he never told Dick that he already possessed the Lady of the Lake’s Sword 320
Trivia
- Dick notices that Geralt resembles Kaer, the Witcher Order’s first leader, but dismisses his own speculation about a blood relationship. No such lineage is confirmed in the passage 177.
- “Playing Gwent” repeatedly serves as a suggestive euphemism around Geralt’s romantic encounters, including those involving Little Yennefer and the Lady of the Lake 309 310 321.
