Background / History

Ancient Mutant and Defeat

The original Apocalypse was an ancient mutant whose existence underlay his world’s belief in God. His longevity depended on consciousness transfer into other bodies, a process through which he also accumulated powers. Li Ge discovered him buried beneath a pyramid in Cairo and targeted his consciousness-transfer and sand-and-earth abilities 105 112.

Apocalypse awakened among the ruins, remembering that he had been changing bodies and wondering what had happened to his Four Horsemen. After disintegrating a passage to the surface, he encountered Tony Stark controlling a Golden Body Dharma Idol inside the Mirror Dimension. His teleportation failed, his molecular manipulation could not penetrate Li Ge’s protection, and his sand and earth were melted by golden flames 109 110.

He then attacked Tony through the consciousness space. Although a concentrated psychic strike inflicted a severe headache, Tony’s Demon True Form burned away much of Apocalypse’s mental power. Tony captured his weakened consciousness separately from his unconscious body 111 112.

Li Ge’s Incarnation and the Mutant Nation

Li Ge adopted both Apocalypse’s body and his name, describing the new incarnation as a clone. He replaced the original appearance with a youthful version of his own face and a blue-and-silver color scheme 113 115.

Working with Tony, Apocalypse developed a way to stabilize mutation-inducing radiation by incorporating Energy Absorption, shapeshifting, and self-healing. He also embedded Scan and Record so newly awakened abilities could be collected automatically. Stryker served as the test subject, awakening a skull-shaped psychic attack that Apocalypse restrained and recorded 116.

The subsequent awakening program supplied vast quantities of ability information. Its single-use stabilization effects addressed energy shortages, bodily abnormalities, and injuries associated with awakening. Apocalypse and Li Ge shared senses throughout the process, allowing the collected information to support the Nine Heavens project 118.

Building the Path to Godhood

After returning to the research base, Apocalypse explained his identity to Peter, Harry, and Gwen Stacy and offered to design abilities for Harry and Gwen. He also pursued Captain America’s biological information to complete the First Heaven’s foundational enhancement power 129 150.

Using Captain America’s serum information, King Fruit information, and Redstone energy, he created the King Fruit Tree. He removed the serum’s tendency to amplify a recipient’s personality traits and transferred that property into the Dark Domain instead 157.

Apocalypse tested the First Heaven’s emotionally demanding trial on Coulson, Natasha, and their companions, later admitting that they had been experimental participants. He placed Grant Ward in charge of prayers and guidance, then built a God Worship Altar on Krakoa through which worshippers could enter the Nine Heavens. Entry into the Second Heaven required completing the First Heaven’s trial 165 167.

Thor and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Apocalypse offered to help Thor master his own thunder power in exchange for access to the World Tree. He rejected Thor’s dependence on Mjolnir and directed him toward the highest lightning pool in the Thunder Domain, while secretly adding Thor’s thunder power to the domain 135 140.

He also exposed Hydra’s survival and infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D., identifying Grant Ward and John Garrett as members. When Nick Fury later requested help finding additional infiltrators, Apocalypse agreed to provide malice-detecting artifacts in exchange for access to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s 084 items and research. Fury’s proposal to send captured Hydra agents into the Nine Heavens also promised Apocalypse more subordinates 151 177 178.

Days of Future Past and Sentry Armor

In the Days of Future Past world, Apocalypse encountered another Logan and brought him to the younger Charles Xavier and Hank. He transmitted information about his origins and timeline-sight into their minds, then used an illusion space to show their pasts and possible futures. His observations indicated that preventing the Sentinel catastrophe alone would not save mutantkind: genetically modified food would later suppress mutant genes 187 188 189 190.

Rather than merely destroy Sentinel research, Apocalypse proposed turning its potential into a source of mutant-controlled power. Ordinary people would obtain extraordinary abilities through mutants, changing mutants from persecuted outsiders into providers of power. Logan supported the proposal, while Charles initially opposed the risks 191 192.

Apocalypse established a countryside base, created Skynet, and personally manufactured Raven’s prototype Succubus Armor. His Sentry Armor system used voluntary genetic contracts to copy mutant traits, deliberately preventing wearers from strengthening themselves by indiscriminately hunting mutants 192 196 197.

He then opened the Troop Gathering Pool, where liquid metal scanned participants and formed their armor. Creating the space nearly exhausted him. Charles acknowledged that he had underestimated Apocalypse and accepted that the project could give mutants a better future. Apocalypse left Skynet integrated into the pool as its guardian 210 211 212.

Samsara Realm Administration and Reabsorption

Apocalypse proposed dividing the Samsara Realm into game-like instances populated by copied human characters and supernatural powers. General Ross became an early participant, tempted by the prospect of giant powers and stronger rewards within the Nine Heavens 228 238.

Li Ge subsequently assigned Apocalypse to instance design. Apocalypse revised the user interface to include points, a shop, contacts, and entry/exit controls, applying the changes to the Samsara Bracelets. Li Ge restricted the shop to ordinary goods. Later, the two deployed the prepared instances and reshaped the virtual Earth’s terrain, cities, wildlife, and continental layout 242 266.

By the end of the work, Apocalypse was exhausted and eager to return to Li Ge. Li Ge reclaimed the consciousness and power invested in him, reintegrating the clone’s memories and humanity. The body retained its altered appearance even after that power was removed 279.

Appearance

  • Original body: Stiff blue-gray face and skin, with a hoarse, deep voice. His eyes become milky white and faintly luminous when he prepares a psychic attack 109 110.
  • Li Ge’s incarnation: Youthful face identical to Li Ge’s, clear silver eyes, and long blue-silver hair tied into a ponytail 113.
  • Altered skin: Deep cosmic blue, sparkling with points of starlight 113.
  • Clothing: Blue robes bearing dragon patterns and silver trim, replacing the original outer armor 113.

Personality

The original Apocalypse regarded himself as a god and ordinary humans as weak mortals. Being overpowered by Tony enraged him, while the realization that Tony was merely borrowing a much greater being’s strength drove him into despair 109 111 112.

Li Ge’s incarnation is playful, proud, and fond of leisure, particularly fishing. He readily delegates administration to useful subordinates and initially complains when Li Ge assigns him the Samsara Realm. His enthusiasm returns once he recognizes the creative freedom the position offers 162 165 192 242.

Despite his casual manner, Apocalypse treats power design seriously. He carefully analyzes Captain America’s enhancement before using it as the foundation of the First Heaven and builds consent requirements into Sentry Armor’s genetic-contract system. He is nevertheless willing to use people as experimental subjects, including Stryker and the first King Fruit trial participants 116 157 165 197.

He rejects the idea that gods should monopolize extraordinary power. His arguments with Charles center on giving mutants the means to determine their own future rather than preserving a balance imposed on them. Nick Fury, meanwhile, comes to view him as an immensely powerful child who disregards rules and acts as he pleases 158 166 200.
