Power Progression

Su Yi does not follow conventional cultivation realms. His Qi Refining cultivation is an outward presentation, while his actual strength grows without cultivation; much of his effort goes into reducing his output rather than increasing it 459 466 494.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Unranked power; incomplete restraint 138 Even his attempt at the weakest possible punch naturally produces Great Dao power that a Foundation Establishment cultivator cannot evade.
Apparent Qi Refining 217 Crushes Xie Xuecheng's tangible sword qi with an apparently ordinary hand, despite displaying only Qi Refining cultivation.
Improved precision 428 Has gained sufficiently precise control to strike a sect disciple without accidentally killing him.
Passive growth without cultivation 466 Is already vastly stronger than in his Su Duanhun era. He explains internally that time alone makes him stronger.
Approximately tenfold historical strength 484 Estimates himself to be about ten times stronger than at an earlier attempt to break through an obstacle. His attack against Thor uses only one-tenth of his strength.

Beyond Sage Power Value 124 680 The Heavenly Dao judges his released aura to exceed her assessment limit; his energy alone surpasses that of an initial universe.
Increased physical strength in the Land of Terror 709 Reports a substantial physical increase without any change in cultivation realm, saying he feels capable of punching through the world.
Rising combat output against Wudi 845 846 847 Begins outside his combat state, then increases his displayed power, destroys the Heavenly Dao Battlefield, shatters Wudi's equipment, and gains the advantage.
  • Immortal Realm disguise: Manufactures an identity token naming him a Mortal Immortal disciple of Tongtian and adjusts his aura to fifth-grade Mortal Immortal; this is not an actual breakthrough 519 520.
  • Later public presentation: Continues claiming Qi Refining Great Perfection. His deliberately restrained strength test produces C-rank punching results 718 735.

Background / History

Origins and the Primordial Wilderness

Su Yi remembers becoming conscious when he was the only humanoid being in the world. His early life passed from isolation to excitement at discovering other life, then to seeking opponents and eventually trying to restrain his overwhelming strength 249 303 505.

Hongjun was his first friend. After Hongjun died in meditation, Su Yi divided the Primordial Purple Qi he left behind into three, creating the Three Pure Ones. Su Yi later also used Hongjun's identity, discarding it after the Three Pure Ones established their sects 505 843.

As Su Duanhun, he became a swordsman whom even the Primordial Wilderness's Sages feared to challenge. He married Yunxiao, becoming the Jie Sect's son-in-law 217 463.

When Yunxiao died, Su Yi retaliated against the powerful beings who had treated the world and its inhabitants as pieces in their schemes. He destroyed their “chessboard,” killing its players; the catastrophe that ended the era of gods and Buddhas was his own palm strike 1 387 462.

Influence on Human Civilization

Su Yi taught Suiren to make fire, Shennong to identify medicinal herbs, and Yu the Great to control floods. Humans subsequently built temples and worshipped him. Wanting to disappear from public memory, he arranged for history and mythology to be rewritten, including the invention of Pangu and Nüwa 1.

Ying Zheng studied under him for three months before unifying the six kingdoms. Su Yi attributes his instruction chiefly to techniques for improving weapons. Qin Shihuang also built an underground palace and enshrined Su Yi's statue there, but Su Yi could not explain the source of his own immortality 1 16.

During the Eastern Han, Su Yi lived as Liu Xiu. His intervention at Kunyang included a meteor striking Wang Mang's camp and an enormous cloud undermining the enemy's morale. Yin Lihua, a reincarnation of Yunxiao, was his wife; Guo Shengtong was another consort whom he neglected 207 244.

Over successive lives, he tried occupations including bounty hunting and wandering as a knight-errant. When weary, he entered long periods of sleep, hoping to leave past attachments behind and begin again 245 281 717.

Return to Modern Qingzhou

After sleeping for fifty years, Su Yi returned to a transformed society. Former followers, including Yu Guoan and Ye Lin, helped arrange identification, housing, and schooling. He settled on Wutong Street and sought an ordinary life of study and work 4 5 6.

He initially refused new disciples, including Yu Huiyin and Ye Xiaxuan. Nevertheless, Ye Xiaxuan became his disciple early in his modern life and later performed a formal tea ceremony 34 37 41 60 282.

His everyday activities repeatedly brought him into local disputes. He exposed a subway pickpocket, defended his university roommates, settled Xu Chuan's casino debt, and helped Zhang Ting financially without requiring her to become his employee 36 102 195 307.

Cultivation Academy and Immortal Realm

Su Yi joined the Thirteenth Bureau and helped oversee admissions for the cultivation school. At the Green Mountain Bookstore, he put Long Wen and Tantai Yue to work; a table infused with his blood also greatly accelerated their cultivation 240 402.

He trained Ye Xiaxuan through sword intent, protective treasures, and increasingly dangerous combat. Their relationship became romantic, and he openly acknowledged loving her 223 489 499.

On entering the Immortal Realm, he concealed his identity beneath a fabricated status as Tongtian's disciple. He defeated Ji Wudi, intervened against Bian Zhuang, and arranged powerful companions and opponents to help temper Ye Xiaxuan 519 520 532 537.

He also freed Yuan Haoran and attended the Ten Thousand Demons Assembly in disguise. After the Qiongqi King's attack, he destroyed Four Descendants City, then entered Fusang Demon City as a black bear without being recognized by Eastern Emperor Taiyi's demonic sense 608 625.

War of the Heavenly Dao and Later Events

Su Yi agreed to participate in the War of the Heavenly Dao on the condition that his wife accompany him. At an arena gathering experts from fifty-eight universes, he accepted a wager against the Twelfth Universe's Heavenly Dao and negotiated for ninety percent of the winnings 679.

Initially concealing his full strength to keep the battles interesting, he eventually tired of the contest and killed the Heaven-Swallowing Rat with one sword strike. His performance established that even Heavenly Daos were not beyond his reach 680 694 827.

Back on Earth, he continued presenting himself as a Qi Refining cultivator while teaching and researching exotic beasts. He ordered Spirit Void Palace's members to copy his Complete Global Exotic Beast Cookbook ten thousand times each and teach its contents to others 718 749 794.

In a later confrontation, he defeated and remade Wudi, the being created to kill Su Duanhun. Afterward, he promised Ye Xiaxuan that she would remain by his side wherever he went. He also defeated Yuan Haoran again, but let him leave to pursue strength independently 848 849 851 853.

Appearance

Su Yi appears to be a handsome young man of about twenty, with refined, scholarly features and eyes repeatedly described as clear, fathomless, and weathered by time. His youthful appearance contrasts with his unusually tranquil bearing 1 6 72.

  • Coloring: Black hair, black eyes, and yellow skin 250.
  • Build: Not thin, but not visibly muscular or recognizably trained in martial arts 62.
  • Modern appearance: Cuts his hair short and changes from a black robe into a clean white shirt after returning to society 1 4.
  • Clothing: Prefers hanfu's workmanship and appearance, though modern suits also suit him naturally 248 308.
  • Distinctive impression: His harmonious features and bearing evoke an immortal living among mortals 221.

Personality

Su Yi seeks novelty rather than wealth, status, or greater power. Cooking, shopping, fishing, reading, mahjong, and experimenting with modern technology give him reasons to remain engaged with life. He dislikes the isolation created when everyone treats him with fear and reverence 6 50 278 337 516.

His calm manner coexists with a sharp tongue and mischievous humor. He deliberately provokes people, plays along with their mistaken assumptions, and exploits technicalities—most famously insisting that debts owed by “Su Duanhun” have nothing to do with “Su Yi” 41 81 152 466.

He does not consider himself a saint. His actions can be generous or devastating according to his judgment and mood, and he accepts the Immortal Realm's rule of strength while enjoying Huaxia's peaceful society. Nevertheless, disliking someone does not automatically make him want to kill them; he has spared opponents and saved people he finds irritating 76 240 278 611.

Immortality has not erased his attachments. He grieves departed friends, remembers Yunxiao with particular tenderness, and retains ordinary desires. He also insists that reincarnated people possess lives of their own rather than obligations inherited from previous marriages 245 246 287 360 494.

His attitude toward endless life changes with experience. Early in his modern return, he eagerly anticipates new discoveries; after confirming his overwhelming superiority in the War of the Heavenly Dao, he sometimes wishes someone could end his life 6 791.

Abilities & Skills

Immortality, Durability, and Regeneration

Su Yi is ageless and does not know why he lives forever 1 245.

  • Survives Wudi's repeated attacks despite a vast disparity in their initially displayed combat values 845.
  • Instantly heals wounds that cut his skin and flesh; Wudi's weapon cannot sever his tendons or bones 845.
  • Can withstand massed divine attacks without adopting a defensive stance 535.
  • Has no known offspring. He believes a partner far weaker than himself cannot withstand or nurture the transmission of his lineage 489.

Swordsmanship

Su Duanhun's sword qi once swept across thirty thousand miles, and even Sages avoided challenging his blade 217.

  • Sword intent over moves: Teaches that comprehending sword intent matters more than memorizing techniques 223.
  • Ordinary weapons suffice: Does not require Soul Severing to defeat powerful swordsmen 531 532.
  • Extreme precision: Executes eighteen hundred exquisite sword strikes in an instant while cutting and preparing Guiche's heads and wings 662.
  • Instruction through experience: Demonstrates swordsmanship directly and temporarily controls Ye Xiaxuan's body to teach her 486 662.
  • Overwhelming lethality: Kills the Heaven-Swallowing Rat and its soul with a single committed strike 694.

Spatial Power and Concealment

Su Yi manipulates space for travel, storage, isolation, and combat.

  • Instantly relocates from a cliff's base to its summit 467.
  • Uses Universe in the Sleeve to store objects; it is explicitly more powerful than a spatial treasure 731.
  • Creates or enters independent spaces and takes Yuan Haoran's sword through spatial power 853.
  • Establishes a ten-mile domain that prevents signs of his activities from leaking outside 221.
  • Disguises himself and others convincingly enough to escape Eastern Emperor Taiyi's recognition 625.
  • Secretly alters a hair sample using Hat Trick 749.

Matter, Artifacts, and Imposed Commands

His consciousness can affect objects and bodies without conventional techniques.

  • Rearranges molecules to prevent an alloy sword from breaking and repair its cracks 337.
  • Immobilizes Human Realm Immortals through words, leaving one trapped on a swing and another unable to control his body 282.
  • Breaks the Heaven-Defying Sword, a treasure bestowed by Tongtian, with his thumb 794.
  • Forges a flying dagger from Mo Tu's armor and axe fragments, then grants it sentience 713 731.
  • Long-used possessions acquire extraordinary power; even his eating bowl surpasses many famous treasures 807.
  • His blood can enhance a cultivation environment, as demonstrated by the bookstore table 402.

Souls, Memories, and Creation

Su Yi's command of souls and life expands considerably over the story.

  • Can control corpses, prevent decay, and make them speak, though he initially distinguishes these acts from true resurrection 176.
  • Earlier experiments forcing cultivators' souls into corpses produced the beings later known as Hou Qing, Ying Gou, Hanba, and Jiangchen 176.
  • Erases five immortal women's memories of him to end their longstanding obsession 601.
  • Later recreates Yunxiao with an independent soul, distinct from Gu Tongtong, her reincarnation 700.
  • Restores the dead monkeys of Flower-Fruit Mountain, including their memories 840.
  • Alters Wudi's purpose and abilities, adding service to Su Yi without erasing the original command to kill Su Duanhun 848 849.

Divination and Star Arts

His relationship with fate makes divination unusually dangerous.

  • Divining another person's fate drastically alters their fortune and can draw them into an inescapable death trap; he therefore avoids doing it casually 223.
  • Attempts to divine Su Yi are also hazardous: Daoist Wuya dies, while the Primordial Heavenly Venerable suffers damage to his Dao heart 519.
  • Explains Star Arts as predicting future events through the stars and using stellar power to attack. They require strong mental power rather than a high cultivation realm 810.

Medicine, Craftsmanship, and Everyday Skills

His long life has given him extensive practical expertise 76 117.

  • Medicine: Recognizes Liu Shi's physical condition from observation 152.
  • Antiques: Identifies origins from firsthand familiarity with historical periods 16.
  • Carving: Produces a detailed radish likeness of Xu Diandian in five minutes 205.
  • Clothing: Made the first immortal robe from heavenly silkworms and can reproduce historical garments after examining them 249.
  • Cooking: Regularly prepares meals and uses rare immortal ingredients and treasures for food 37 307 662.
  • Gambling: Possesses luck sufficient to guarantee casino winnings, but learns the rules first to preserve the enjoyment 195.

  • Four Immortal-Slaying Swords — Borrowed from Tongtian after a wager involving the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation. He eventually agrees to return them when Tongtian's true body arrives, though he later borrows Immortal-Slaying again 466 475 531.

  • Yu Guoan and Ye Lin — Former followers whose connections help him reenter modern society after his fifty-year sleep 4 5.
  • Bai Miaomiao — Friend who hires him as a dinner companion and shield against unwanted suitors; his bluntness repeatedly frustrates her 152 287.

  • Wudi — Weapon created to kill Su Duanhun, later remade by Su Yi. Wudi acknowledges that he cannot kill Su Duanhun and will not kill Su Yi, though Su Yi does not immediately consider him a friend 848 849.
