| Classification | Cultivation realm; distinct from possessing Sage-level combat strength or bearing an honorary “Sage” title 811 1079 1506. |

Power Progression
Documented attainments distinguish becoming a Sage from merely recovering Sage-level magical power.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ancestor Shen Guang: Old Ancestor → Sage | 1009 | Chen Zheng placed Primordial Purple Qi and a Heavenly Dao Sage Position into him, then dispersed the gathering thunderclouds. |
| Wu Ancestor: Old Ancestor → Sage | 1009 | Attained Sagehood alongside Shen Guang through the same investiture. |
| Chen Zheng: Sage-level magical power confirmed | 2077 | Explicitly possessed Sage-level magical power while fighting Epoch Hegemons. This is not identified as an investiture into a Heavenly Dao Sage Position. |
Place in the Cultivation System
| Realm or category | Relationship to Sages |
|---|---|
| Quasi-Sage | Below Sagehood. The Golden Crow Quasi-Sage regarded himself as one of the strongest beings beneath Sages 602. |
| Old Ancestor / Patriarch | A separate realm whose combat strength can rival a Sage’s. Most nevertheless struggle against Sages’ Sage Positions and supreme treasures; exceptional Old Ancestors can surpass ordinary Sages 1004 1079. |
| Sage | Regarded by more than ninety-nine percent of living beings as cultivation’s final destination, although it is not the actual endpoint 1009. |
| Half-Step Dao Ancestor | May possess greater combat power, but a Sage’s Heavenly Dao protection within a Great Thousand World makes the Sage exceptionally difficult to kill and grants higher heavenly standing 1479 1490. |
| Dao Ancestor | Stands above Sages. The master of Purple Empyrean Palace is identified as the exceptional Dao Ancestor residing within the Great Thousand Worlds 1476. |
| Epoch Hegemon | Above Dao Ancestors and capable of surviving an Epoch Calamity 1728. |
- Location matters: Sages can dominate beneath the Heavenly Dao within Great Thousand Worlds, but their strength is far less exceptional in the outer realms, Chaos Domain, Great Void, and Immortal Domain 1150 1476 2077.
- Primordial foundations matter: Sages connected to the Original Primordial Wilderness can possess foundations dangerous even to much stronger cultivators. Houtu’s return to the Underworld raised her directly to half-step Epoch Hegemon strength 1867.
Attaining Sagehood
Heavenly Dao Sage Positions
- Limited availability: The scarcity of Heavenly Dao Sage Positions can prevent otherwise powerful cultivators from becoming Sages 911.
- Vacancies: After the Nether Sage’s death, a Heavenly Dao Sage Position appeared, prompting speculation about which Old Ancestor would attain Sagehood next 981.
- Investiture: Chen Zheng summoned the two vacant positions of the Immortal Martial Great World and bestowed them, together with Primordial Purple Qi, on Shen Guang and the Wu Ancestor 1008 1009.
- Relinquishment: The Nether Sage offered to abandon his position and leave for the Great Void, although he was killed before doing so 980.
Other Means and Exceptions
| Means | Details |

| Great Thousand World Realm Lord | Receives destiny equivalent to that of a Sage in another Great Thousand World and can develop Sage-level magical power through diligent cultivation. This is described separately from acquiring a Sage Position 1723. |

Terminology and Common Confusions
- Poet Sage is an honorific: Du Shaoling is explicitly described as a sage among poets, not a cultivation-realm Sage, despite his verses manifesting the power of the Great Dao 811.
- Sage Zhuang is a Sub-Sage: Although initially presented as a Sage, later explanations identify him as a Literary Dao Sub-Sage with exceptional combat strength comparable to a Sage’s 358 1433 1506.
- Sub-Sages are not full Sages: Their cultivation corresponds to Quasi-Sages, but the Black-Yellow Great World’s Literary Dao grants them additional standing and methods capable of challenging Old Ancestors 1433 1506.
- Magical power is not total combat strength: Chen Zheng killed Sages while possessing only True Immortal cultivation by using additional methods and objects inherited from shattered epochs. His later Sage-level magical power supported combat far beyond ordinary Sages 1028 2077.
- The Saintly Teacher is not necessarily a Sage: Chen Zheng explicitly denied being a Sage when Kuafu asked about his identity in the Primordial Wilderness 2748.
