Background and History

Founding and Continental Supremacy

The Ji Family did not originate on the Heavenly Chen Continent. According to Heavenly Chen Academy’s records, its founding ancestor arrived with the World-Destroying Millstone, defeated the continent’s leading experts, and established the family. His original homeland is unknown 1059.

The family’s genealogical records attribute its rise to the founder’s ability to communicate with the millstone while it was hidden in the cosmos. He later wielded it to kill a Great Emperor, grinding away even the emperor’s essence. The lineage is also described as having produced a Saint 61 457.

Several major lineages challenged Ji supremacy. Academy records list the Li, Tian, Xiao, and Lin families among those destroyed by it. The Li Family survived in a severely diminished state after losing numerous Supreme Realm experts and abandoning its ancestral home 616 1059.

The Li Family Feud

The Ji–Li war drew other major powers into opposing camps. Despite possessing more than a dozen Supreme Realm experts, the Li Family suffered an overwhelming defeat. Ji Boshang’s account attributes its survival to the relationship between the Ji patriarch and a Li Family woman 436 616.

Ancestral rules prohibited marriage between the two enemy families. Yu Gang initially recounted a rumor that the old Ji patriarch had killed a pregnant Li woman and her unborn child after discovering her relationship with a high-ranking Ji lord. Ji Wuchang’s age and lack of visible bloodline power initially made his connection to that story uncertain 265.

Ji Wuchang was later publicly identified as Ji Yuan’s son. After the great war, Ji Yuan returned to the family with Ji Wuchang’s mother, confirming that she had survived 858 1382.

Overseas and Cosmic Expansion

The family’s reach extends beyond its continental territories. Records read by Ji Wuchang reveal that nearly half the main lineage had ventured into the universe to seek other star domains. The Ji Family had already established substantial footholds in several of them 1312.

Supporting numerous branch lineages was partly a response to this dispersal of the main family 1312.

Organization and Governance

Leadership Structure

Position or Body Composition and Authority
Family head Ji Yuan directs the family and controls hidden forces not fully known even to prominent family members 1308.
Young master Ji Wuchang holds genuine governing authority, rather than a ceremonial title. He may fully represent the family head during the latter’s absence or seclusion; his standing is comparable to, or slightly above, that of the ancestors 1315.
Ten ancestors At the time of Ji Wuchang’s return, all ten are at the Supreme Realm ninth-level peak. Eight belong to the main lineage and two to branch lineages 1308.
Millstone guardians Five ancestors continually guard the World-Destroying Millstone and rarely involve themselves in ordinary affairs. The other five also spend most of their time in seclusion 1308.
Twenty-four senior elders Sixteen are stationed outside the family, while eight remain with it year-round. Of those eight, four are at Supreme Realm ninth level, two at eighth level, and two at seventh level 1308.
Twenty elders Seventeen attend Ji Wuchang’s appointment ceremony; the three absent elders are the imprisoned branch leaders condemned for treason 1308 1315.

Main Lineage and Branch Lineages

Bloodline and main-lineage authority strongly influence succession. Ji Boshang and many elders consider possession of the Ji bloodline essential to leadership, opposing attempts to elevate Ji Zhiyi despite her talent 423.

Branch factions sought greater access to resources and a share in governing the family. Ji Tongzhen repeatedly proposed joint rule by the main and branch lineages, while other branch elders hoped to secure influence through Ji Zhiyi’s future Dao companion 423 551.

The conflict eventually became an internal war that killed many cultivators, including Supreme Realm elders. Ji Yongming explained that these threats were one reason Ji Yuan had not brought Ji Wuchang home earlier: even the patriarch could not guarantee his son’s safety 885.

Cultivation and Secret Arts

Ji Bloodline

  • The family descends from a lineage that produced a Saint, giving it formidable inherited bloodline power 61.
  • Bloodline purity is treated as a central qualification for leadership by the main-lineage faction 400 423.
  • Ji Wuchang’s bloodline mark combines a millstone associated with the Ji Family and a golden sword associated with the Li Family 616.
  • The World-Destroying Millstone’s staircase tests both bloodline and soul strength. Those without Ji blood may suffer severe injuries merely by stepping onto it 1310.

World-Destroying Millstone Technique

The family’s most feared combat technique requires communion with its ancestral treasure.

  • Practitioners normally travel to the ancestral grounds to comprehend it 457.
  • Receiving the second form requires communicating with the millstone and obtaining its recognition 457.
  • Ji Wuchang’s use of the second form, Grinding Thunder and Fire, shocks Ji Boshang and Ji Yongming because he had not physically visited the ancestral grounds 457.
  • His earlier use of Grinding Yin and Yang, a secret not taught to outsiders, first prompts Yu Gang to suspect a connection to the Ji Family 249.

World-Destroying Millstone Fist

  • Advanced cultivation requires condensing destructive power, making later stages increasingly difficult 569.
  • At the time of Ji Wuchang’s early displays, only the patriarch and a few clan elders have reached complete mastery; Ji Boshang has reached major mastery 569.
  • Ji Wuchang later combines the fist with lightning origin to kill a Supreme Realm sixth-level opponent in the Void Arena 1300.

Forbidden Blood Millstone Physique

  • Also called the world-destroying blood demon physique, it is said to originate from communion with the millstone’s negative emotions 555.
  • Its users risk being overwhelmed by murderous Qi and becoming indiscriminate killers 555.
  • More than twenty incidents occurred within the family. The worst killed several Supreme Realm experts and severely injured the ancestor needed to stop the rampaging practitioner 555.
  • The cultivation method was sealed and forbidden. Ji Yunshu’s use of it exposed secret instruction from within the family 555.

Dragon Refining

  • Selected descendants are sent to exceptionally harsh environments to grow independently, without family cultivation resources 1277.
  • Ji Yunshu states that no more than thirty percent return alive 509.
  • Ji Zhengjie, Ji Huacai, and Ji Zongwei reach the Dao Severing Realm through their own efforts before returning to learn the family’s stronger techniques 1277.
  • Ji Yunshu speculates that Ji Wuchang is another Dragon Refining participant; this is his interpretation, not a confirmed explanation of Ji Wuchang’s upbringing 509.

Major Story Arcs

Testing Ji Wuchang

Ji Boshang sends eleven young family members into the Hundred-City and Thousand-City Battles to test Ji Wuchang. The assessment also offers those participants an opportunity to become core disciples. Ji Xiao later explains that the family remains divided over allowing Ji Wuchang to return 388 421.

Ji Wuchang’s performances gradually win Ji Boshang’s support. Meanwhile, Ji Yunshu’s ambitions and forbidden physique reveal the seriousness of branch-lineage opposition 537 555.

Succession and Purge

Ji Yuan suppresses opposition to his son’s return, killing a branch expert at Supreme Realm eighth layer and arranging a powerful escort. The imperial competition becomes a further test of Ji Wuchang’s qualifications for succession 1267 1269.

After returning, Ji Wuchang reaches the millstone trial’s ninety-ninth step. The treasure appears above him, grants him its techniques and activation method, and draws approval from all ten ancestors 1310 1311.

Ji Wuchang is formally appointed young master with full governing authority. At the same ceremony, the First Ancestor announces the execution of the branches led by Ji Feng, Ji Tong, and Ji Chengshan for centuries of collusion with Myriad Souls Hall and the leaking of family secrets 1315.

Retaliation Against Infiltrators

A sweeping investigation uncovers more than a hundred compromised individuals across the family and the Heavenly Chen Imperial Dynasty. The largest identified infiltrating groups belong to the Nine Nether Lineage, Myriad Souls Hall, and the Zhan Clan 1317.

Ji Wuchang selects the Zhan Clan as the first target. Ji Yuan approves its destruction, and the family mobilizes ancestors, elders, guardian dragons, and more than a thousand disciples for the expedition 1317 1319.

During the campaign, the Sixth and Eighth Ancestors also support Ji Wuchang’s intervention on behalf of Ji Yaoyao, helping her confront Ji Yourong and take control of her separate Ji Clan 1321 1322.

War with the Nine Nether Lineage

When rebellion erupts in the imperial capital, Ji Wuchang identifies support from the Nine Nether Lineage and Myriad Souls Hall. He orders Ji Boshang to reveal his presence while concealing Ji Wuchang’s arrival, hoping to draw enemy forces together for destruction 1346.

After more than forty implicated families are wiped out, Ji Wuchang issues the family’s declaration of war against the Nine Nether Lineage. With Ji Yuan and the ancestor in seclusion, the young master’s orders represent the family’s will 1351.

Ji Yuan later fights alongside the allied army for more than twenty days. He kills the Nine-Headed Nether Beast with Chu Tianheng’s help but suffers grave injuries. Meanwhile, Ji forces reinforce the capital against a Myriad Souls Hall assault 1372.

Evacuation and Return

With much of the family’s strength deployed elsewhere, Ji Wuchang learns that a Chaos Vicious Beast is approaching the estate. He orders an evacuation to the ancestral grounds and remains behind with the restored World-Destroying Millstone 1372.

After the war ends, the family returns from its refuge. It remains the Heavenly Chen Continent’s foremost aristocratic clan, and opposition within the family can no longer prevent Ji Yuan from bringing Ji Wuchang’s mother home 1382.
