History
Accepting Chen Ci
While playing a board game with Ning Fengzhi, Chen Xin sensed the Sword Qi produced by Chen Ci’s Martial Soul awakening. He left to investigate and offered to accept the boy as his disciple before learning the identities of his Martial Souls. Chen Ci’s Innate Full Soul Power and extraordinary Sword Qi convinced him that the boy could become the sect’s next supreme elder 1.
After returning to the sect, Chen Xin examined the Passionate Sword and initially regretted its emphasis on emotional control rather than slaughter. When Chen Ci revealed the Ruthless Sword, he recognized its killing power as greater than that of his own Seven Kill Sword. He later clarified that either sword was exceptional enough to inherit his swordsmanship 1 3.
Chen Xin welcomed Ning Fengzhi’s plan to betroth Ning Rongrong to Chen Ci. He saw the match as beneficial both personally and strategically: the sect needed offensive Soul Masters, while Chen Ci would benefit greatly from the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda’s support 2.
Training at Sword Peak
Chen Xin began Chen Ci’s instruction with unity of man and sword, followed by an explanation of sword intent. His disciple’s immediate progress surprised him, particularly when Chen Ci resisted his attempt to summon a wooden practice sword. Chen Xin subsequently demonstrated his full Seven Kill Sword Intent by shearing a distant mountain peak flat 3 4.
When Chen Ci suggested that swords might possess spirits, Chen Xin considered the possibility of realms beyond intent but acknowledged that he was still exploring sword intent himself. He urged his disciple to master the foundations before pursuing higher realms 4.
After Chen Ci essentially mastered the basic movements in ten days, Chen Xin taught him the family’s Seven Kill Sword Technique. He withheld excessive praise to discourage arrogance and prohibited Chen Ci from passing the technique to others without permission 4.
First Soul Ring Hunt
Chen Xin escorted Chen Ci and Ning Rongrong to the Star Dou Great Forest for their first Soul Rings. Rather than allow Chen Ci to attempt a thousand-year ring immediately, he tested both children against progressively older rings, establishing Chen Ci’s approximate limit at fifteen hundred years 5 6.
He then located a fourteen-hundred-year Three-Eyed Demon Fox, blinded its spiritual eye, and severed its limb tendons so Chen Ci could safely deliver the killing blow. After Chen Ci obtained Once, Chen Xin recognized that its two-second rewind touched upon time rather than merely emotional control 6 7.
For Rongrong’s ring, Chen Xin captured a Rock-Patterned Giant Bear and assigned Chen Ci to defeat it himself. He guarded them from hiding, using the encounter to build combat experience and deepen their bond. Afterward, he recommended that future hunts encourage the pair’s independence and coordination 7 8.
Protecting Rongrong’s Journey
Six years later, Chen Xin secretly followed Rongrong after she ran away from home, removing suspicious people and dangers before she encountered them. When she tearfully reunited with Chen Ci, he and Ning Fengzhi resisted the urge to bring her home, respecting her decision and hoping the journey would help her mature 9 10.
Personality
Chen Xin combines exacting instruction with a strong appreciation for talent. He repeatedly conceals his astonishment at Chen Ci’s progress, advances his lessons when repetitive practice ceases to be useful, and insists that practical combat experience must accompany technical training. He is also candid about his limitations, openly admitting that he cannot guide the cultivation of twin Martial Souls 3 4 5 7.
His manner toward Ning Rongrong is openly affectionate and playful. He gives her gifts, strokes her head, and jokingly threatens to reclaim a Soul Tool when she declares Gu Rong her favorite grandfather. His protectiveness does not entirely override his judgment: he ultimately allows her to experience fear and uncertainty outside the sect rather than ending her journey for her 2 10.
Abilities & Skills
Seven Kill Sword
Chen Xin’s sword-type Martial Soul supports both overwhelming offense and aerial travel. He is described as the Titled Douluo with the strongest offensive power in the world at the time 1 19.
- Sword Qi: Easily kills hundred-year Soul Beasts and severely wounds thousand-year beasts 5 6.
- Precision attacks: Blinds the Three-Eyed Demon Fox’s vertical eye and disables all four limbs before it can retaliate 6.
- Sword flight: Enlarges the Seven Kill Sword to transport himself, Chen Ci, and Ning Rongrong 5.
- Spiritual detection: Searches the surrounding forest for suitable Soul Beasts using spiritual power 5.
Sword Intent
Chen Xin teaches two swordsmanship realms: unity of man and sword, in which the weapon becomes an extension of the wielder, and sword intent, which infuses essence, Qi, spirit, and will into the sword 3.
- Seven Kill Sword Intent: Releases a dense killing aura and empowers a wooden sword enough to flatten a distant mountain peak with one stroke 4.
- Sword influence: Can draw a wooden sword toward himself through intent; Chen Ci initially resists, but cannot retain it when Chen Xin releases his Seven Kill Sword Intent 3 4.
- Known limits: States that intent is the highest weapon realm known to him; no subsequent breakthrough is documented 4.
Seven Kill Sword Technique
His family technique contains seven forms. He teaches Chen Ci only the first three, judging them sufficient for the boy’s current strength 4 5.
| Form | Function |
|---|---|
| First: Break Kill | Breaks through a Soul Master’s protective Soul Power 5. |
| Second: Pursuit Kill | Pursues opponents in close combat 5. |
| Third: Slaying Kill | Provides a finishing attack to end a battle 5. |
- Its demanding movements help Chen Ci temper his body and absorb whale rubber more effectively than basic sword exercises 4 5.
- Transmission to others requires Chen Xin’s permission 4.
