Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Titled Douluo — established strength | 21 25 26 | Already possesses nine Soul Rings. His Soul Power is one level below Chen Xin’s, but his exceptional defense previously allowed him to fight Chen Xin on even terms. No exact numerical rank is stated. |
| Fourth Soul Ring enhanced with Clear Abyss of the Azure Stream | 26 | Lin Xing inscribes his domain and an Intent source onto Bone Prison’s Soul Ring. The ring changes from purple to blue, white, and purple, granting Gu Rong new offensive applications, including six enormous blue swords. The enhancement can grow through nurturing with Soul Power and spiritual power. |
Appearance
Gu Rong is distinctly bony, with a deathly pale face and long hair. He wears a gray-black robe 20 23.
- Black spatial ripples accompany his arrival at the sect’s main hall 20.
- His original Soul Ring configuration is yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black, black, black, black 26.
- After Lin Xing’s modification, his fourth Soul Ring becomes an intertwined blue, white, and purple 26.
Personality
Gu Rong is proud of his defensive strength and highly competitive with Chen Xin. Their longstanding friendship is expressed through insults, challenges, and frequent sparring. He readily accepts Chen Xin’s wager against Lin Xing, believing that his defensive specialization will let him succeed where Chen Xin had suffered embarrassment 20 21.
Despite his temper, Gu Rong does not blame Lin Xing for injuring him during their agreed match and refuses to take his frustration out on a child. His affection for Ning Rongrong also checks his anger: when Ning Fengzhi warns that his outburst might wake her, he immediately withdraws his Soul Power 22 23.
His loyalty to Ning Fengzhi and Ning Rongrong outweighs his desire for personal strength. After receiving Lin Xing’s enhancement, he offers to surrender it if doing so would allow either of them to gain a means of self-defense instead 27.
Abilities & Skills
Defensive Mastery
Gu Rong’s defense is his defining strength, compensating for his comparatively weaker offense 21 26.
- Against Chen Xin: His durability bridges their one-level Soul Power difference, making their earlier sparring matches effectively even 25.
- Against Intent: Strong defense does not give him Chen Xin’s ability to directly contend with Lin Xing’s Intent. During their restricted match, it disrupts Gu Rong’s Soul Power circulation and weakens his responses 22.
- Restricted performance: Against Lin Xing, the wager and overlapping domains prevent him from releasing even thirty percent of his full strength. The resulting injury is not a defeat of an unrestricted Gu Rong 22 23.
Bone Dragon Soul Skills
| Soul Skill | Number | Documented Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Bone Dragon Armor | Second | Forms a suit of white-bone armor around his body 22. |
| Bone Prison | Fourth | Raises numerous bone spikes accompanied by black Qi currents. Lin Xing later enhances this skill’s Soul Ring 26. |
| Bone Dragon Phantom | Fifth | Manifests two bone dragon phantoms that can accompany his spatial attack 22. |
| Black Dragon Profound Nether Formation / Black Dragon Dark Nether Suppression | Sixth | The sixth skill is named differently across its appearances. Its use involves spatial distortion and a spatial beam deployed alongside Bone Dragon Phantom 22 25. |
| Bone Dragon True Body | Seventh | His Martial Soul Avatar; manifests an enormous bone dragon wrapped in powerful Soul Power 25. |
Spatial Movement
Gu Rong uses spatial abilities for rapid travel and can bring another person with him 20 27.
- Appears before Chen Xin amid successive black spatial ripples 20.
- Opens a black spatial vortex to transport himself and Lin Xing from the rear mountain to the sect’s dining room 27.
Inscribed Clear Abyss of the Azure Stream
Lin Xing uses the Court of Surging Conviction and Oratrice Mecanique d’Analyse Cardinale to extract Gu Rong’s fourth Soul Ring temporarily, inscribe it, and return it. The procedure takes nearly an hour 26.
- Enhanced Bone Prison: Blue Intent wreathes the prison, with black, white, and blue Qi currents intertwining throughout it 26.
- Sword manifestation: Gu Rong summons six enormous blue swords and shatters a boulder more than ten meters tall during his first test 26.
- Growth potential: Nurturing the inscription with Soul Power and spiritual power strengthens the ring and improves its compatibility with the domain 26.
- Borrowed source: The Intent belongs fundamentally to Lin Xing. Gu Rong must nurture the implanted source rather than rely on the same innate regeneration available to Lin Xing and Chen Xin 26.
- Limits: Continued regeneration depends on the source remaining intact and Gu Rong’s spiritual power not being completely exhausted 26.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chen Xin’s Wager
When Chen Xin returns to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect with Lin Xing, Gu Rong disputes his claim to be the most suitable teacher for such an exceptional disciple. Chen Xin proposes a wager: Gu Rong must suppress his strength to rank seventy, avoid using his Martial Soul Avatar, and withstand Lin Xing for ten minutes without injury. Victory would make Chen Xin stop competing with him for Ning Rongrong’s attention for a month 20 21.
Lin Xing opens with two domains, suppressing Gu Rong further and interfering with his Soul Skills. His final Judgment and Ruling, delivered through the Splendor of Tranquil Waters, breaks through Gu Rong’s counterattacks and leaves his palm bleeding and his left arm nearly fractured. Gu Rong directs his anger toward Chen Xin’s setup rather than Lin Xing 21 22 23.
Lin Xing’s Oceanid completely heals both the new injuries and Gu Rong’s longstanding hidden ailments. Impressed by his combat and healing abilities, Gu Rong tells Ning Fengzhi that Lin Xing’s growth could eventually lift their sect out of the Clear Sky Sect’s shadow 23.
Defeat on the Rear Mountain
The following morning, Gu Rong and Chen Xin spar on the rear mountain while trading taunts. The fight escalates to their Martial Soul Avatars, with Chen Xin testing his newly developed Seven Kill Domain: Ten Thousand Rivers Return to the Sword Realm 24 25.
Chen Xin’s enormous sword overpowers Gu Rong’s spatial beam, leaving his robe torn and cuts on his hand. Chen Xin admits that he deliberately provoked the fight to test the technique. Lin Xing heals both men afterward 25.
Fourth Soul Ring Modification
Offering Gu Rong a way to turn the tables, Lin Xing modifies Bone Prison with his domain and Intent source. Gu Rong trusts him enough to remain unguarded throughout the procedure and is astonished by the resulting offensive power. He plans to nurture the altered ring and surprise Chen Xin in a future match; no rematch using it is shown in the supplied chapters 26.
Gu Rong then asks whether Ning Fengzhi and Ning Rongrong can receive similar protection, even offering to relinquish his own enhancement. Lin Xing says that is unnecessary, though his current capacity initially requires a wait before another inscription 27.
Relationships
- Chen Xin — Longtime friend, rival, and fellow pillar of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Their bickering masks genuine affection; Gu Rong is pleased by Chen Xin’s approaching breakthrough despite denying it aloud 18 23 27.
- Ning Fengzhi — Sect master, who addresses him as “Uncle Bone.” Gu Rong discusses the sect’s future with him and seeks a domain inscription to improve his personal protection 21 23 27.
- Ning Rongrong — Calls him “Grandpa Bone.” He competes with Chen Xin for her attention, avoids disturbing her sleep, and prioritizes her safety over retaining his own enhancement 20 23 27.
- Lin Xing — Initially Chen Xin’s boast-worthy disciple and wager opponent; later his healer and the creator of his enhanced fourth Soul Ring. Gu Rong openly admires his talent while regretting that Chen Xin found him first 21 23 26.
