Background / History
Becoming Yang Xingchen’s Soul Spirit
Yang Xingchen obtained Cangyuan through fishing after the Snow Empress directed him toward a location with frequent time and space fluctuations. She identified the catch as a hundred-year Space-Time Soul Spirit with some intelligence. Cangyuan became Yang Xingchen’s natal Soul Spirit and received the speed attribute extracted from Tang San during the first demonstrated use of Fishing Line · Thousand Threads Lure 2 3 4.
In the Far North, Cangyuan supported Yang Xingchen against the Ice Grudge Snow Fiend by releasing stored attribute orbs. He subsequently shared the strain of ice body tempering at the Ice Spirit Cold Spring, allowing the Snow Empress to increase its intensity. During Yang Xingchen’s later treasure hunting with Xiao Bai, Cangyuan supplied his third Soul Ring 7 8 12.
Encounter with the Dragon Kings
At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Cangyuan accompanied Yang Xingchen into the Dragon Kings’ demiplane and sensed two powerful dragon bloodlines calling to him. He later helped propel Yang Xingchen toward the bottom of the spring, where the entrance to their space lay 15 17.
His true-dragon transformation surprised both Dragon Kings. Although the Time Dragon King and Space Dragon King had left no known bloodlines, Cangyuan displayed characteristics associated with them. The Fire Dragon King speculated about hidden descendants, while the Ice Dragon King instead suspected an unknown future event connected to Cangyuan’s origin in the river of time. Neither explanation was confirmed 19.
Prospect of a Physical Body
The Dragon Kings proposed freeing Cangyuan from his Soul Ring after Yang Xingchen attained godhood, then giving him a physical body. Cangyuan initially refused because he believed this meant leaving Yang Xingchen. He agreed once the Snow Empress explained that he could remain beside his father while also gaining the freedom to travel independently 20.
The plan still required Yang Xingchen’s consent, since removing a Soul Ring would cause immense pain even after godhood. The Dragon Kings proposed offering their Dragon Pearls as compensation if he agreed 20.
Appearance
- Dragonfish form: Initially grows larger as his cultivation increases, then develops two dragon whiskers. At twenty thousand years, he has two bumps on his head and larger, sturdier scales 5 7 10.
- Near-dragon form: At over ninety-three thousand years, measures eight meters long, with silvery-white scales, elongated whiskers, and four claws. His horn buds have not yet developed into horns 15.
- True-dragon form: Grows two dragon horns and five toes on each claw, with red and blue energy flowing between his scales during transformation. Yang Xingchen recognizes his form as resembling an Eastern dragon 15 19.
- Spatially concealed body: After becoming a true dragon, appears alternately longer than a great river or smaller than a palm; his actual length cannot be judged by sight 19.
Personality
Cangyuan is affectionate and playful, habitually circling Yang Xingchen, blowing bubbles, and chasing his own tail. Despite reaching hundred-thousand-year cultivation, his limited life experience leaves him behaving like a child. He becomes bored when Yang Xingchen spends too long cultivating and eagerly seeks opportunities to play 15 19 20.
He readily expresses displeasure but is easily cheered. After being summoned for unexpected body tempering, he angrily blows bubbles at Yang Xingchen, then immediately brightens when promised several days of freedom. His fascination with bubbles later leads him to request balloons—“bubbles that won’t pop easily”—to share with the Snow Empress 8 24.
Cangyuan also insists on being treated as an individual. When Electrolux refers to him without using his name, he corrects the elder without fear and leaves to play after receiving an apology 25.
Abilities & Skills
Life-Bound Soul Spirit
Cangyuan can continue cultivating and refining his bloodline despite existing as a soul 19.
- Absorbs energy supplied through Yang Xingchen, including the Snow Empress’s sealed power and the Dragon Kings’ origin power 9 19.
- Shares the influx of Heaven and Earth Yuan Power during body tempering 8.
- Retains intelligence within Yang Xingchen’s Spiritual Sea. Electrolux considers his human-like intelligence remarkable even by the standards of his own Necromancy 25.
- As the Snow Empress explains, life-bound Soul Spirit growth depends on sufficient resources and the host’s physical capacity, rather than heavenly tribulations 10.
Attribute Storage and Release
Cangyuan stores attribute clusters extracted by Yang Xingchen’s first Soul Skill 4.
- Storage delays the expiration of extracted attributes; it does not make the theft permanent 4.
- Releases stored orbs to temporarily strengthen Yang Xingchen, as demonstrated during the Ice Grudge Snow Fiend encounter 7.
- Receives both Tang San’s extracted speed and the Ice Grudge Snow Fiend’s extracted spiritual power 4 7.
Soul Ring Provision
Cangyuan supplies Soul Rings compatible with Yang Xingchen’s Space-Time Fishing Rod 3 8 12.
| Soul Ring | Associated Skill | Details |
|---|---|---|
| First | Fishing Line · Thousand Threads Lure | Extracts attributes and interrupts the charging of enemy Soul Skills 3 4. |
| Second | Rewind · Reversal Hook | Converts extracted attributes into other effects, such as defense into an attack wave. Cangyuan condenses the ring and delivers it inside a bubble 8 9. |
| Third | Heavenly Tendril Wave · Meteor Fishing | Produces thirty silver-blue hooks of light at Yang Xingchen’s demonstrated strength, allowing attribute extraction from caught targets 12. |
- Yang Xingchen’s fourth Soul Ring is not supplied by Cangyuan: the Fire Dragon King creates it from his own and the Ice Dragon King’s origin powers 19.
Time and Space Attributes
Cangyuan’s true-dragon transformation manifests powerful time and space attributes, particularly through the concealment of his body within spatial interstices 19 20.
- His spatial movement makes Yang Xingchen’s fishing hook repeatedly slip free, preventing a repeat of their earlier towing method 17 20.
- His transformed bloodline surpasses that of most hundred-thousand-year dragons the Ice and Fire Dragon Kings encountered during their lives 19.
- No separate, named time-manipulation technique belonging to Cangyuan is demonstrated in these chapters.
Relationships
- Yang Xingchen — Host and father figure. Cangyuan has followed him since gaining intelligence and continues calling him “Dad” despite understanding that they are different species. Accepting this bond prompts Yang Xingchen to take responsibility as a father and try to show him positive examples 19 20 21.
- Snow Empress — Older-sister figure, cultivation benefactor, and playmate. Cangyuan calls her “Big Sister Snow Empress.” She explains the physical-body proposal to him and later helps Dugu Bo partly to preserve the hopeful example Yang Xingchen wants to set 19 20 22 24.
- Ice Dragon King and Fire Dragon King — Their origin power enables his true-dragon transformation. Impressed by his attributes and bloodline, they devise the proposal to restore him to independent physical existence 19 20.
- Electrolux — Fellow resident of Yang Xingchen’s Spiritual Sea. Recognizes traces of Necromancy in Cangyuan’s existence and apologizes when Cangyuan objects to not being addressed by name 25.
