Background / History
Childhood and Gui Yuan’s Arrival
Gui Mei’s Ghost Martial Soul originated in a childhood drowning incident. He described having once “died” before something entered his body and reunited his soul with his physical form, transforming his ordinary ghost fire into Ghost 1.
Years before Gui Yuan’s awakening, Gui Mei and Yue Guan were swept into an unfamiliar valley during a mission. After answering several questions, they returned to their original location holding a baby. They raised the child as their son, with Gui Mei becoming his “Second Dad.” The valley was later identified in their discussions as Qiankun Asking Love Valley, but Spirit Hall’s subsequent searches failed to locate it 1 3 24.
Standing in Spirit Hall
Gui Mei and Yue Guan had belonged to Qian Xunji’s faction, leaving them out of favor with Bibi Dong despite their loyalty to Spirit Hall. They remained important to her because she had relatively few Titled Douluo available for assignments 16.
Their circumstances gradually improved through Gui Yuan’s achievements and relationship with Bibi Dong. After Gui Mei reached Level 96, she promised him a Soul Bone and granted the family leave to commemorate Yue Guan’s older sister. Gui Mei recognized these gestures as a change in how the Pope treated them 44.
Raising and Protecting Gui Yuan
Gui Mei personally conducted Gui Yuan’s Martial Soul awakening and recognized the Ghost Martial Soul when it appeared alongside Yue Guan’s Singular Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum. He subsequently taught Gui Yuan meditation, arranged his theory lessons, and trained him to use his second Martial Soul 1 4 5.
He and Yue Guan escorted Gui Yuan on his early Soul Ring hunts. Gui Mei disabled the Vajra Vine for his first ring, later helped defeat the Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear, and discovered the bear’s right-palm External Soul Bone. He also used controlled Soul Power pressure to help Gui Yuan finish integrating that bone 7 20 22.
When Lie Yangtian demanded punishment after Gui Yuan defeated Yan, Gui Mei joined Yue Guan in confronting him. He offered to “spar” with Lie Yangtian and released his nine Soul Rings, backing Bibi Dong’s refusal to blame Gui Yuan for the provoked duel 28.
Immortal Herbs and Soul Core Research
At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Yue Guan selected the Netherworld Shadow Flower for Gui Mei. The family agreed to conceal the garden and its remaining herbs, concerned that surrendering them would deprive the family of their benefits and potentially place them in Yu Xiaogang’s hands 14 16 18.
Gui Mei and Yue Guan became early experimenters in Gui Yuan’s Soul Core theory. They first produced cyclones, then paused rather than risk fatal internal explosions. After Bibi Dong successfully condensed her own core and shared her experience, they resumed their attempts together 31 32 40 42.
By Gui Yuan’s eighth birthday, his efforts to secure additional elders for Bibi Dong had also reduced his fathers’ workload. With Ghost Leopard Douluo and Ling Yuan Douluo assigned to her service, she explicitly allowed Gui Mei and Yue Guan more rest and time with their son 49.
Appearance
- Clothing: Usually wears black robes 1 43.
- Expression: Habitually solemn and expressionless; smiles and visible excitement are uncommon 1 18 45.
- Voice: Hoarse or raspy 1 3.
- Martial Soul manifestation: Black mist and Netherworld Power accompany his techniques; his Martial Soul Avatar takes the form of an enormous ghostly apparition 5 20.
Personality
Gui Mei is reserved, practical, and cautious. He initially recommends avoiding the large poison barrier in Sunset Forest and repeatedly emphasizes that Gui Yuan must personally withstand a Soul Ring’s physical and spiritual demands, regardless of his fathers’ strength 13 19.
His restrained manner conceals strong affection for his family. He takes pride in Gui Yuan’s progress, firmly defends him against other elders, and comforts Yue Guan during emotional moments. His everyday exchanges with Yue Guan also reveal dry humor, including teasing him over his caution during Soul Core research 4 18 28 32 43 44.
Abilities & Skills
Ghost Martial Soul
Gui Mei’s Martial Soul is his own soul rather than a separate ghostly entity 3.
- Netherworld attribute: His inherited Martial Soul restricts Gui Yuan’s compatible ring choices to netherworld, darkness, or attributeless Soul Rings 3.
- Physical immunity: The nature of Gui Mei’s Martial Soul already prevents physical attacks from harming him 45.
- Agility and concealment: Moves rapidly and scouts like a shadow, disappearing among treetops while searching for Soul Beasts 6.
- Power manipulation: Can spread Netherworld Power through an extensive underground root network, as demonstrated against the Vajra Vine 7.
Ring-Based Soul Skills
- Second Soul Skill — Soul Devouring Claw: Releases pitch-black claw shadows; used to strike the Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear’s back and neck 20.
- Fifth Soul Skill — Ghost Shadow Earth Pool Hand: Produces ghostly claws from the ground to bind an opponent’s limbs 20.
- Seventh Soul Skill — Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms him into a massive ghostly apparition and increases his presence severalfold 20.
Self-Created Techniques
Gui Mei teaches Gui Yuan techniques usable through the Ghost Martial Soul without attaching Soul Rings to it 5 24 33.
- Netherworld Needle: Compresses Netherworld Power into a concealed projectile suited to probing attacks and ambushes. His demonstration silently penetrates a stone wall ten meters away 5.
- Shadow Step: Uses Netherworld Power to improve movement 6.
- Ghost Hand: Creates a dexterous, translucent black hand that can emerge beneath a target, behind them, or from shadows to restrict movement 33.
- Combination tactics: Recommends closing with Shadow Step, restraining the target with Ghost Hand, then attacking with Netherworld Needle or Gui Yuan’s Dark Gold Dreadclaw 33.
Two-Level Stillness Domain
A Martial Soul Fusion Skill performed with Yue Guan 10 23.
- When both were Level 95, their fusion had a chance of restraining a Level 97 opponent 23.
- Bibi Dong expected Yue Guan’s advancement to Level 96 to make that restraint reliable 23.
- Their compatibility rose from roughly 50–60% to at least 80% during their later Soul Core cultivation 23 43.
- Gui Mei identifies activation time as a weakness of Martial Soul Fusion Skills: lower compatibility means a longer windup 50.
Ghost Shadow Wind Chasing Slash
The skill granted by his Rapid Advance Wind Chasing Left Leg Bone 45.
- Increases speed by 100%, turns him into a black afterimage, and inflicts slashing damage.
- Grants a brief state resembling “Void” during movement.
- Prevents physical damage and reduces energy damage; the latter reduction is estimated at approximately 20%.
- Enhances his existing physical immunity by adding protection against energy attacks, giving it potential as a life-saving technique.
Equipment / Items
- Rapid Advance Wind Chasing Left Leg Bone: A dark-green, approximately 30,000-year-old Soul Bone from a Wind Demon Tiger. Awarded by Bibi Dong after his Level 96 breakthrough; his first Soul Bone reward from Spirit Hall 44 45.
- Ten-thousand-year right leg bone: Obtained by chance during an early Soul Beast hunt. Its skill is not specified 45.
- Netherworld Shadow Flower: An immortal herb selected by Yue Guan and later consumed to strengthen Gui Mei’s Martial Soul 14 43.
- Storage Soul Tool: Used to keep the Netherworld Shadow Flower before its absorption 43.
Relationships
- Gui Yuan — Adoptive son and pupil. Gui Yuan trusts his two fathers without reservation; Gui Mei oversees his training and protects his interests 5 16 28.
- Yue Guan — Long-standing partner, Martial Soul Fusion partner, and fellow parent. They share cultivation risks, exchange daily teasing, and provide each other emotional support 4 42 43 44.
- Bibi Dong — Pope and superior. Their initially strained relationship improves through Gui Yuan, leading to rewards, consideration for family matters, and a lighter workload 16 44 49.
- Hu Liena — An affectionate junior who calls him “Grandpa Ghost” and remembers how well he and Yue Guan treat her 45.
- Wang Mozhu — Gui Yuan’s theory instructor. Gui Mei and Yue Guan involve him in documenting and researching Soul Core theory 44.
- Lie Yangtian — Fellow elder confronted over Yan’s treatment of Gui Yuan 28.
Trivia
- Wang Mozhu mistakenly interprets Gui Mei and Yue Guan leaving the same sleeping quarters as evidence that they have become a couple. They had been assisting each other’s Soul Core cultivation, and the quarters contained multiple rooms 42 43.
- Touching Gui Yuan’s Darkin Bow causes Gui Mei intense stabbing pain in his mind. He concludes that the artifact recognizes its master and declines to touch it again 7.
