Background and History
Origins and the Dragon God’s betrayal
Zi and her younger brother, Jin—the future Dragon God—hatched from the same purple-gold dragon egg. They were the universe’s first Amethyst Dragon and Golden Dragon, respectively. The weaker dragons under their protection called Zi the Dragon Emperor 81.
Zi regarded strength as the proper Dao inherited from their mother. She condemned Jin’s pursuit of nine other laws as a departure from that path and claimed that he had originally been far weaker than her 81.
According to Zi, Jin joined the Nine Great Dragon Kings and the Tiger King to murder Phoenix through treachery and seize the Creation Godhead. Only afterward did he scheme against Zi and bring her to ruin. She retained both sorrow over her brother’s betrayal and hatred toward the Tiger King 81 99.
The Dragon Tomb was originally established by Jin to bury her. Her remains lie at its deepest level and preserve the source bloodline information of the Amethyst Dragon 83.
Bloodline legacy
More than ten thousand years before her conversations with Xu Zi, Zi allowed a drop of her bloodline legacy to fall into the tribe of his Xu ancestors. Their inherited bloodline consequently carried her remnant will, allowing descendants to awaken dragon Martial Souls resembling her children 83 151.
The Dragon Tomb was above the Sun Moon Continent when she bestowed that legacy, but subsequently drifted into the sea between the Sun Moon and Douluo continents. When Xu Zi crossed the ocean, his Purple Brilliant Heaven Destroying Dragon bloodline contacted her, and she consciously protected his passage 151.
Appearance
- Eyes: Purple-gold dragon eyes with slit pupils, often appearing within Xu Zi’s Purple Sun or solar disc 113 132 139.
- Manifested body: Uses the materialized Purple Brilliant Heaven Destroying Dragon as a temporary physical vessel 99.
- Statue vessel: Possesses and animates the Angel God Statue, using its appearance to impersonate the Angel God 141 144.
Personality
Zi is proud of her ancestry and uncompromising about cultivation. She dismisses the Nine Great Dragon Kings as “mongrels” for abandoning their own paths and refuses to treat their bloodlines as standards Xu Zi should aspire to reach. Despite her bluntness, she patiently explains difficult principles when she chooses to teach 81 114 139.
Her assistance is deliberately transactional. She withholds her Dragon Core Method as leverage for securing Xu Zi’s help with resurrection, offers lessons “on credit,” and repeatedly ties valuable rewards to visiting the Dragon Tomb. She also appreciates his intelligence and willingness to recognize the limits of their arrangement 113 124 139 142.
Although usually quiet and reserved, Zi becomes more talkative as her consciousness recovers. Her ancient losses remain emotionally significant: Phoenix’s surviving legacy draws recognition, the Tiger King’s legacy provokes immediate hatred, and briefly experiencing a body again gives her an urge to sing and dance 99 159.
Abilities and Skills
Strength and Destruction
Zi explains destruction as an advanced application of strength, rather than a separate starting point 114.
- Identifies ultimate strength as the foundation of the strength path 114.
- Describes ruination as the first advancement beyond that foundation: forcibly breaking the current state of things 114.
- Describes destruction as the second advancement: reducing matter, and even space, to finely fragmented energy 114.
- Uses destruction to rapidly break down Dragon Scale Fruit and medicinal herbs into usable essence 81 114.
- Supplies the ancestral power of destruction within Xu Zi’s Martial Soul; she distinguishes this borrowed power from destruction he might eventually cultivate for himself 114.
Bloodline Restoration and Martial Soul Development
Zi knows how to draw out the ancestral potential of Xu Zi’s Purple Brilliant Heaven Destroying Dragon 83 159.
- Recommends Dragon Scale Fruits and top-tier subdragon Soul Beasts to bring the Martial Soul closer to her original bloodline 83.
- Helps develop Purple Gold Dragon Wings and later uses three Dragon Scale Fruits to complete the Purple Gold Dragon Tail 82 159.
- Explains that the tail improves balance, aerial turning, and gliding, while providing a crucial foundation for the super-divine skill Karma Dance 82 84 159.
- Warns that no quantity of ordinary nourishment can reproduce her full original strength: Xu Zi must obtain the Amethyst Dragon’s source bloodline information from her remains 83.
Cultivation Knowledge
Zi guides Xu Zi through techniques involving Soul Power, spiritual power, medicinal resources, and domains 113 132 139 166.
- Helps ripen the Star Luo Flower and Fruit into a spirit pearl and directs the refinement of medicinal ingredients used to complete his first Power Dragon Core 113 114.
- Claims to possess a Dragon Core Method, but initially refuses to teach it because it is a bargaining chip for her resurrection 113.
- Advises on cultivating the Purple Demon Eye with purple Qi continuously generated by the Purple Sun 132 146.
- Explains how sufficient spiritual power and Soul Power can reshape energy into weapons. For the Purple Sun, Xu Zi first needs an opened Sea of Consciousness and must fill the Martial Soul with spiritual power 139.
- Guides the formation and initial expansion of the Purple Sun Domain 166.
Martial Guidance and Divine Skills
Zi can directly intervene in Xu Zi’s weapon handling and understands techniques beyond his current capacity 76 146.
- Takes over his halberd movements during battle, condensing the weapon and giving his stance the bearing of an ancient halberd grandmaster 76.
- Links the development of his dragon tail to advancing Karma Dance beyond its opening stance 84 159.
- Offers to teach a divine skill contained within the Angel Holy Sword, but requires sufficient eyesight and spiritual power to perceive and withstand its contents 146.
Divine Power and Faith Manipulation
Zi uses the Angel God Statue’s resources for both recovery and Xu Zi’s cultivation 141 143.
- Absorbs accumulated faith through the statue to strengthen her consciousness 141.
- Wields the Angel Holy Sword to temper Xu Zi’s Soul Rings with Angel Divine Power 142 143.
- Manipulates the statue’s laws of light, holiness, and flame to distribute faint Holy Light and Fire over believers throughout the Holy City 145.
- Explains that using Angel Divine Power on an incompatible Thunderclap Yama Prison Vine Soul Ring would consume far more power for a smaller improvement 167.
Perception and Legacy Recognition
- Recognizes the Fire Phoenix and Ice Phoenix Martial Souls as fragments of an old friend’s legacy 99.
- Identifies the Hell White Tiger as an unusually complete inheritance of the Ancestral Tiger King 99.
- Locates the Thunderclap Yama Prison Vine near Thunderclap Strait by sweeping the surrounding area 166.
- Can guide Xu Zi into the Dragon Tomb once he reaches the sea directly beneath her remains 151.
Equipment and Vessels
- Purple Gold Dragon Emperor Halberd — Speaks through the weapon and subsequently directs Xu Zi’s handling of it 75 76.
- Purple Brilliant Heaven Destroying Dragon Martial Soul — Houses her surviving consciousness and serves as a temporary body when materialized 82 99.
- Angel God Statue — A possessed vessel used to absorb faith, manipulate divine power, and impersonate the Angel God 141 144 145.
- Angel Holy Sword — Temporarily wielded to temper Xu Zi’s Soul Rings 142 143.
- Promised Soul Bone divine armor — Offers Xu Zi a complete set with a God King-level inheritance if he reaches her remains; its delivery is not shown in the provided chapters 124.
Relationships
- Xu Zi — Bloodline inheritor, host, student, and resurrection partner. Their cooperation is mutually beneficial, but he remains cautious about her intentions and she repeatedly bargains for his journey to the Dragon Tomb 83 139 142 150 171.
- Jin / Dragon God — Younger brother and fellow dragon progenitor. Zi accuses him of abandoning their mother’s Dao and engineering her downfall 81.
- Phoenix — An old friend murdered by Jin’s coalition. Zi recognizes fragments of Phoenix’s legacy in Ma Hongjun and Shui Bing’er 81 99.
- Ancestral Tiger King — Hated enemy implicated in Phoenix’s murder and Jin’s rise. His legacy within the Hell White Tiger provokes her destructive pressure 81 99.
- Qian Daoliu and the Worshippers — Accept her impersonation of the Angel God and obey her instructions to gather Dragon Scale Fruits for Xu Zi 144.
- Qian Renxue — While posing as the Angel God, Zi orders that Qian Renxue be brought to the Inheritance Sanctum after five years and presents her as the prospective third Angel God 144.
Story Role and Major Arcs
Resurrection Bargain
Zi directs Xu Zi toward the deepest part of the Dragon Tomb, explaining that her remains offer both the route to his Martial Soul’s further evolution and the resources needed for her resurrection. Xu Zi offers to gather materials, but she tells him that everything required is already there; he must bring his dragon Martial Soul to her 83 139.
After revealing that she protected his ocean crossing, Zi secures another promise that he will visit. She reluctantly accepts a further delay, expressing the hope that he will keep his word within three years 151.
Impersonating the Angel God
After possessing the Angel God Statue, Zi exploits its faith reserves and the Worshippers’ belief in their divine ancestor. She orders a continent-wide search for Dragon Scale Fruits and publicly associates her supposed descent with Xu Zi’s Sun Martial Soul 141 144.
She reinforces the deception by blessing the Holy City’s believers with faint Angel Divine Power. Her familiarity with receiving worship allows her to maintain the role convincingly 145.
Thunder God Secret Realm
Zi encourages Xu Zi to approach the Thunder God Secret Realm without waiting for the vine to open the way for him. Inside, she ravenously absorbs the Power of the Thunder God, visibly shrinking and draining the color from the Thunderfall Heavenly Pillar 169 171.
Xu Zi suspects that she wants the realm’s remaining divine power to unlock the Thunderclap Law within her bloodline and manifest Austin Griffin’s lightning dragon head; this is his interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from Zi. Her absorption awakens the Thunder God’s heroic spirit, leading to an unexpected succession offer for Xu Zi 170 172.
