Background / History

Summoning and allegiance

Lin Xi selected Artoria as his first Heroic Spirit because he valued her attack power over the other conventional Saber candidates he considered. He chose a hundred-year-old Red Dragon Grass as her summoning catalyst because of her identity as the Red Dragon of Britain; the attempt succeeded 1.

Afterward, Lin Xi disclosed his circumstances to her. Artoria was briefly disappointed that her summoning had no connection to the Holy Grail, but accepted him as her Master and pledged to remove the obstacles in his path 2.

Protecting and teaching Huo Yutong

Artoria accompanied Lin Xi to the White Tiger Duke’s Mansion and supported his intervention when they found Huo Yutong being bullied. Although her raw strength was restricted by Lin Xi’s power, she decisively defeated the Black Snake Soul Grandmaster harassing the girl 2 3.

Huo Yutong subsequently joined Lin Xi’s swordsmanship lessons. Artoria trained both children, correcting their tendency to compromise their judgment out of concern for each other. When their enemies sought revenge, she fought Mr. Li while trusting her students to handle his subordinates 5 6.

Mr. Li’s fourth Soul Skill eventually overwhelmed her limited manifestation. Lin Xi supplied the power for a full Excalibur release through his Command Spells, allowing her to destroy the attackers 7.

Journey and Shrek Academy

During the group’s later travels, Artoria used Mana Burst to keep pace with Melusine, who carried Lin Xi and Huo Yutong. In the Star Dou Great Forest, she and Melusine defeated Soul Beasts and stood ready to protect Lin Xi when the Three-Eyed Golden Lion approached 10 11 12.

At Shrek Academy, she blocked Zhou Yi’s attack on Lin Xi, creating the opening for Melusine to restrain the teacher. Her subsequent practice sessions astonished Zhou Yi, who concluded that Artoria’s swordsmanship had entered the domain of gods 25 26.

When the frenzied Ma Xiaotao attacked outer court students, Artoria confronted her while Melusine evacuated the wounded. Excalibur left Ma Xiaotao gravely injured but alive. Artoria then demonstrated her strength to the arriving elders by cutting the hand of the white-clad elder who blocked her sword 31.

Life within the Sea of Consciousness

After the Gold of Life expanded Lin Xi’s Sea of Consciousness, Electrolux transferred Artoria and Melusine there from their Soul Rings. Both initially reacted with surprise and wariness 45.

Their new physical bodies within that space relieved some of the boredom caused by spending most of their time in spirit form to conserve mana. Artoria became more talkative and could comment directly in Lin Xi’s mind during the freshman assessment 49.

Personality

Artoria is dignified, loyal, and upright, but not inflexibly opposed to deception. When Lin Xi questioned the morality of manipulating Huo Yutong’s trust, she judged the plan by its likely consequences: she would not interfere with a deception that would not harm the girl and might save her 2 49.

As a teacher, she combines strict standards with concern for her students’ welfare. She rebukes Lin Xi for reckless protectiveness, urges Huo Yutong to think independently, and insists that the growing child rest rather than train beyond her limits. She also takes open pride in their achievements 5 6.

Her composure does not exclude humor. When Lin Xi sought help with Huo Yutong and Melusine’s rivalry, Artoria deliberately looked away and appeared amused by his predicament 20.
