Background / History
Transmigration and River Guardianship
Xu You transmigrated into the Primordial World as a Yinglong. Foreseeing the Dragon-Han Great Calamity, he left the Dragon Clan and swore to anchor a nameless river, stabilize the surrounding land and waters, and soothe the region’s disordered baleful Qi. Although this earned him merit, it did not exempt him from the karmic burden imposed on his race after the calamity 1 5.
Over tens of thousands of years, he watched human communities appear and disappear around his territory. After rescuing children from a river and driving away a pursuing tiger, he became the tribe’s guardian deity. The humans mistakenly began offering children as sacrifices; he expressly forbade this and later restricted access to his temple when their replacement offerings left rotting meat in his lair 2 3 11.
Taking Gu Yuena as a Disciple
Xu You initially treated Na’er as a lost dragon child deserving protection. Recognizing her name, he examined her, discovered her foreign origins, and broke her self-imposed seal. When the restored Silver Dragon King claimed authority over him through the Dragon God’s bloodline, he effortlessly struck her down 2 3 4.
Gu Yuena’s freedom from Primordial Dragon Clan karma suggested a possible escape from his own inherited restrictions. He therefore compelled her to become his disciple, pairing genuine killing intent with the benefit of mastery over the Law of Water. He subsequently extracted her Creation Godhead for research, dispersed her inherited cultivation, and taught her the Ancestral Dragon Scripture 5 7 8.
He also appointed Gu Yuena as the Rain Tribe’s shaman, placing her among the humans while he studied the godhead in his riverside abode 11.
Houtu and the Establishment of Reincarnation
Houtu, an old acquaintance who had secretly sheltered his territory from interference, confronted Xu You about finding a resting place for wandering souls. His foreknowledge exposed his understanding of her future transformation into reincarnation, prompting her to demand an explanation 14 15.
Xu You proposed using the Twelve Heavenly Gods and Fiends Great Formation to summon Pangu’s remnant image and secure the Heavenly Dao’s recognition. In exchange for revealing that Kunpeng possessed the missing Primordial Purple Qi, he requested the position of Lord of Reincarnation 16.
During the subsequent collapse of Mount Buzhou, Xu You manifested his dragon form and enclosed the human tribe in a protective bubble. After Houtu established the Netherworld and gained recognition as a Heavenly Dao Sage, she fulfilled their agreement and named him Lord of Reincarnation 17 18 20 21.
Strengthening His Position
The Heavenly Dao confirmed Xu You’s appointment and bestowed the Book of Life and Death and the Judge’s Pen. Houtu later transferred Gonggong’s former Water-element power to him after preserving only a wisp of Gonggong’s true spirit 22 24.
Xu You considered reincarnation as a way out of his predicament but rejected it because someone might tamper with the process and compromise his identity. He instead continued cultivating his Great Daos and sought access to humanity’s future fortune 24 25 28.
To pursue that opportunity, he sent Gu Yuena to a settlement one hundred li east to find the reincarnated Fuxi. She was to invite Fuxi to become his disciple or, if he refused, give him the Dragon Transformation Scripture. Xu You intended to teach humanity through Fuxi rather than directly claim merit reserved for humans 28.
Appearance
- Dragon form: An enormous golden dragon whose silhouette appears to span heaven and earth, with horns that Gu Yuena grips while standing on his head 3 20.
- Human form: A handsome man, assumed through the Transformation Technique 8.
Personality
Xu You is cautious and survival-minded. He abandons the Dragon Clan before its catastrophe, prefers remaining secluded at home, and initially tries to avoid Houtu by pretending to be in closed-door cultivation. His ultimate goal is transcendence, though he also considers securing merit through the future Heavenly Court or seeking dominance in the Douluo World 1 11 12 14.
His treatment of Gu Yuena is calculating and authoritarian. He recognizes her rebellious ambitions, uses threats and rewards to secure obedience, and insists that she respect his instructions. Nevertheless, his teaching emphasizes genuine understanding: he disperses her hastily accumulated cultivation because raising her level without comprehending the Dao would undermine the path he wants her to follow 7 8 28.
He protects humans without accepting their sacrificial customs. His rescues bring him merit, but his relationship with the tribe is not one of constant involvement: he generally intervenes in danger while keeping ordinary worshippers out of his residence 2 3 11 14.
Abilities & Skills
Great Dao of Water
Water is the first complete law Xu You masters and the foundation of his river guardianship 1 6.
- Grants Gu Yuena mastery of the Law of Water, allowing the surrounding elemental laws to respond to her 7.
- Absorbs Gonggong’s former power into his own Great Dao of Water 24.
- Provides Dao resonance that accelerates Gu Yuena’s understanding of the water-attribute Great Dao 28.
Great Daos of Lightning and Wind
Unable to advance his realm because of karma, Xu You develops additional Great Daos to increase his strength 25.
- Lightning: Associated with thunder and myriad tribulations 25.
- Wind: Associated with flight, wind, and clouds 25.
- These supplement Water as three established Dragon Clan paths for developing combat power 25.
Territorial Law Authority
Within the Dragon King Temple, Xu You draws upon accumulated merit, fortune, and offerings to exercise power beyond his cultivation realm 6.
- Mobilizes other laws within his territory, functioning as a miniature Heavenly Dao 6.
- Easily suppresses Gu Yuena despite her inherited God King power and Dragon God bloodline 4 6.
- The temple-based enhancement is explicitly tied to his own domain 6.
Transformation and Dao Arts
Xu You uses transformation, suppression, and other Dao arts to control both his surroundings and his disciple 8 28.
- Assumes human form and forcibly transforms Gu Yuena into a little girl 8.
- Breaks Gu Yuena’s self-imposed seal and later extracts her Creation Godhead 3 8.
- Disperses her cultivation, including the strength she rapidly rebuilds after learning the Ancestral Dragon Scripture 8.
- Transports Gu Yuena to his location through a Dao art 28.
- Creates a bubble large enough to shelter the human tribe during the collapse of the heavens 18.
Foreknowledge and Cultivation Instruction
His knowledge of future events informs his efforts to survive calamities, accumulate merit, and escape the Heavenly Dao’s restrictions 1 12 14.
- Identifies Na’er as the Silver Dragon King and understands the origins of her inherited power 3 8.
- Devises Houtu’s route to Heavenly Dao recognition using Pangu’s remnant image and Primordial Purple Qi 16.
- Teaches the Ancestral Dragon Scripture and prioritizes Dao comprehension and tempering the heart over rapid realm advancement 8.
- Adapts a human cultivation method into the Dragon Transformation Scripture for transmission through Fuxi 28.
Limitations
- Inherited karma: Leaving the Dragon Clan does not remove its collective karmic burden; accumulated merit cannot cancel that debt 5 24.
- Stalled cultivation: His greater combat strength does not mean he has broken through beyond Taiyi Golden Immortal 22.
- Superior beings: He is powerless against Houtu before her Sagehood and explicitly admits he cannot fight a Sage 15 20.
- Restricted human merit: Attempts to directly impart the Dao to humanity draw warnings from the Primordial World’s will 14.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Book of Life and Death — A jade book bearing the paths of living beings throughout heaven and earth, patterned with flowing black-and-white Dao markings. Granted by the Heavenly Dao upon his appointment as Lord of Reincarnation 22.
- Judge’s Pen — An entirely dark ink brush bestowed alongside the Book of Life and Death. The pair serve as fortune-suppressing treasures of reincarnation and the Underworld; Gu Yuena identifies them as two Super Divine Artifacts 22.
- Creation Godhead — Extracted from Gu Yuena for research into her authority and a possible means of transferring his identity outside the Primordial World. Xu You regards it as borrowed rather than permanently taken 8 14.
- Dragon Transformation Scripture scroll — A golden-glowing beast-hide scroll inscribed with a cultivation method for humans, entrusted to Gu Yuena for delivery to Fuxi 28.
Relationships
- Gu Yuena / Na’er — Disciple taken under coercion. Xu You rebuilds her cultivation around Dao comprehension while remaining aware that she wants to surpass and subdue him 7 8 22 28.
- Houtu — Protector, bargaining partner, and the Sage who appoints him Lord of Reincarnation. He helps secure her unrestricted Sage status, while she supplies him with office, treasures, and Gonggong’s power 14 16 21 24.
- Yu — Chief of the Rain Tribe and a worshipper of Xu You as Dragon King. He follows Xu You’s decree appointing Gu Yuena as the tribe’s shaman 11.
- Fuxi — Prospective disciple and intended intermediary for teaching humanity. Xu You sends Gu Yuena to recruit him; his acceptance is not shown 28.
- Ancestor Minghe — Resents Xu You’s appointment because Houtu incorporates the Asura Path into the Six Paths of Reincarnation, placing it beneath Xu You’s authority 23.
Impact on the Douluo World
- The heavenly screen broadcasts Xu You’s encounter with Gu Yuena, exposing his existence to Douluo’s inhabitants. Tang San perceives the golden dragon as stronger than himself and fears interference with his plans 1 2.
- His defeat and recruitment of Gu Yuena distress Di Tian, who initially interprets him as a possible contingency left by the Dragon God 4 7 23.
- His teaching makes the Ancestral Dragon Scripture visible to viewers. Zi Ji successfully cultivates it and destroys her 300,000-year tribulation, while Di Tian also tests the method 23 24.
- His receipt of the Lord of Reincarnation’s mantle and treasures contributes to Douluo-wide debate over whether earning merit could provide a route to godhood 22.
