Background / History

Acquaintance with Xu You

Houtu first approached Xu You because the Demon Court had shown interest in recruiting him. Although she initially came as a potential attacker, she reconsidered after learning that he was a true dragon: the Witch Clan did not want to drive the still-powerful Dragon Clan into the Demon Court’s ranks 14.

Repeated encounters made them acquainted. Houtu became interested in the parallels between the Dragon Clan’s decline and the Witch–Demon struggle, particularly after Xu You suggested that the ongoing slaughter could lead to another calamity. She concealed his identity and sheltered his stretch of river from other powerful demons and witches 14 15.

Planning Reincarnation

Disturbed by the wandering souls left behind by the Primordial World’s wars, Houtu sought a place where the dead could rest. When she visited Xu You, he inadvertently identified her idea as transforming herself into reincarnation. His knowledge gave her previously uncertain plan a clearer direction 14 15.

Her central concern was the Witch Clan’s survival: losing her would prevent the Twelve Ancestral Wu from deploying their complete formation. Xu You proposed using Primordial Purple Qi and Pangu’s remnant image to obtain freedom beyond the Underworld. Houtu accepted despite the plan’s irreverent treatment of Pangu, promised to help Xu You advance, and agreed to make him Lord of Reincarnation. In exchange, he identified Kunpeng as the holder of the missing Purple Qi 16.

Establishing the Netherworld

After Mount Buzhou’s collapse, Houtu vowed to provide the dead with a home and created the Six Paths of Reincarnation. Her achievement stunned beings who believed that the Witch Clan’s lack of primordial spirits made Sagehood impossible 20.

Hongjun initially allowed her ascension because he expected confinement in the Underworld to remove her from the Witch–Demon conflict. Instead, Houtu assembled her siblings and carried out Xu You’s plan. Pangu’s manifestation frightened Hongjun into fleeing into chaos, and the Heavenly Dao accepted her claim 20 21.

Houtu then fulfilled her bargain by naming Xu You Lord of Reincarnation. The appointment granted him the Book of Life and Death and the Judge’s Pen, shocking observers who had expected her to retain the position herself. Her new order also incorporated Ancestor Minghe’s Asura Path into the Six Paths, provoking his resentment 21 22 23.

Protecting the Witch Clan

Houtu could not fully shield Gonggong from the karmic consequences of destroying Mount Buzhou. She preserved a wisp of his true spirit in the Underworld and transferred his former Water-element power to Xu You 24.

Her Sagehood did not prevent the Witch–Demon War. Kunpeng, seeking revenge for her seizure of his Primordial Purple Qi, encouraged the ten Golden Crows to leave together. Their devastation and the deaths that followed escalated into open war 25.

At the Purple Cloud Palace, Houtu directly questioned whether Hongjun intended to destroy the Witch Clan. When he described the calamity as the Heavenly Dao’s course, she asked whether moving her entire clan into the Underworld could spare them. No resolution to that proposal is shown in the supplied account 25 26.

Appearance

Houtu appears in a youthful female form, wearing beast hides that expose large areas of bronze skin. Xu You considers this appearance deceptively adorable compared with her rugged true form 14 16.

  • Clothing: Beast-hide garments 14.
  • Skin: Bronze 14.
  • Bearing: Often forceful and confrontational; first appears with her hands on her hips 14.
  • Supernatural presence: Each breath stirs the earth Qi of nearby mountains and rivers 14.

Personality

Houtu is kind by nature and particularly concerned with unnecessary slaughter. She urges her clansmen to restrain their killing, though she cannot stop subordinates from disobeying her. Her desire to establish reincarnation comes from compassion for souls left homeless by repeated wars 2 14 15.

Her gentleness is relative to the other Ancestral Wu. She is blunt, headstrong, quick-tempered, and willing to use intimidation: she threatens to break into Xu You’s abode and brandishes a disciplinary whip to make him speak. Her threat to eat the humans under his protection is explicitly a bluff 14 15.

Loyalty to her clan guides her major decisions. She tolerates Xu You’s unconventional plan because it offers a way to protect both the dead and the Witch Clan. After becoming a Sage, she retains her emotions and identity rather than severing them, and feels wistful when her elder brothers begin treating her with reverence 16 21.

Abilities & Skills

Reincarnation and Underworld Authority

Houtu creates the Netherworld Underworld and Six Paths of Reincarnation by transforming her body into the Dao 20.

  • Gives wandering souls a destination and a path to rebirth 20 22.
  • Establishes Xu You as Lord of Reincarnation through a decree recognized by the Heavenly Dao 21 22.
  • Preserves Gonggong’s remaining true spirit within the Underworld 24.
  • After Heavenly Dao recognition, remotely commands the Underworld’s power while outside it 21.

Twelve Heavenly Gods and Fiends Great Formation

As one of the Twelve Ancestral Wu, Houtu participates in the formation that summons Pangu’s phantom 20.

  • Requires the combined participation of all twelve Ancestral Wu 16.
  • Produces a manifestation capable of threatening Sages 21.
  • Carries Primordial Purple Qi before the Heavenly Dao in place of Houtu entrusting her own primordial spirit to it 16 21.

Perception and Intuition

Houtu’s Quasi-Sage intuition makes conversations with the much weaker Xu You comparable to mind reading 14.

  • Detects enough of his understanding to recognize that he may offer a solution to her clan’s predicament 14 15.
  • After Sagehood, can perceive future events, including the calamity facing the Witch and Demon Clans 26.

Cultivation Limitations

Houtu’s lack of a primordial spirit shapes both her limitations and her unusual route to Sagehood 14 16.

  • Cannot follow the conventional primordial-spirit cultivation or Severing the Three Corpses method 15 16.
  • Cannot refine Primordial Purple Qi in the ordinary manner 20.
  • Initially possesses Sage-level strength only within the Underworld; Heavenly Dao recognition removes this geographical restriction 20 21.
  • Even after ascending, cannot simply disregard the Heavenly Dao’s punishment of Gonggong 24.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Witch Clan disciplinary whip — A small leather whip designed to strike the flesh rather than the primordial spirit. Used to punish disobedient clansmen and intimidate Xu You 15.
  • Primordial Purple Qi — The strand held by Kunpeng, obtained for the plan that secures her Heavenly Dao recognition. Presented through Pangu’s remnant image rather than refined through her own primordial spirit 16 20 21 25.

Relationships

  • Xu You — Protected acquaintance, adviser, and partner in establishing reincarnation. She appoints him Lord of Reincarnation and later transfers Gonggong’s power to him 14 16 21 24.
  • Pangu — Revered Father God and ancestral source of the Witch Clan. Using his remnant image initially troubles her as disrespectful 14 16.
  • Dijiang — Elder brother who celebrates her ascension and agrees to support her plan to escape confinement in the Underworld 20.
  • Gonggong — Brother whose destruction of Mount Buzhou burdens the clan. She preserves his true spirit but cannot spare him the consequences 20 24.
  • Hongjun — Opposing authority whose plans are disrupted by her unrestricted Sagehood. She confronts him over her clan’s destined destruction 21 25 26.
  • Kunpeng — Enemy whose Primordial Purple Qi she seizes. His retaliation helps ignite the Witch–Demon War 25.
  • Ancestor Minghe — Resents her takeover of the Netherworld Blood Sea and incorporation of his Asura Path into reincarnation 23.
  • Nüwa — Politically opposed through their respective clans, despite their shared compassionate nature 25.

Impact on the Douluo Continent

  • Initial misunderstanding: Sky-screen viewers mistake her gathering of souls for an evil cultivation method; Holy Spirit Cult figures interpret it as support for their own death-realm ambitions 15.
  • Reassessment: Her ascension reveals that she is sheltering the already dead, not killing people to refine their souls 22.
  • Merit as a path to divinity: Her achievement helps prompt Soul Masters and major factions to consider whether earning merit could allow them to become gods 22.
  • Holy Spirit Cult response: The Netherworld Ghost Twin Emperors later cite her work as supreme merit and speculate that establishing reincarnation could offer redemption 27.
