Background / History

Primordial Dragon Clan

The Dragon Clan was one of the Primordial World’s three ancient dominant races, alongside the Phoenix Clan and Qilin Clan. Their struggle for supremacy culminated in the Dragon-Han Great Calamity. The war killed hundreds of millions of beings and shattered the earth veins, bringing Heavenly Dao punishment upon the Dragon Clan 1 5 14.

After the calamity, the dragons withdrew into the Four Seas, while the Ancestral Dragon used his body to hold down the East Sea. Their former dominance ended, and the Demon Clan and Witch Clan became the world’s rival leading powers 1.

Xu You departed before the calamity and swore to stabilize a river, regulate the surrounding land and waters, and soothe its baleful Qi. This earned him merit but did not exempt him from the karmic consequences attached to his race 1 5.

Douluo Dragon Clan

The Douluo Dragon Clan flourished under the Dragon God in the Divine Dragon Realm. Di Tian remembers an era when the clan alone possessed at least ten God Kings, while he served as a member of a guard unit 4 24.

The Dragon God was eventually cleaved in two, producing the Golden Dragon King and Silver Dragon King. Gu Yuena regards reuniting their bloodlines as a means of restoring the Dragon God’s power and leading the Soul Beasts against the Divine Realm 3 7.

By the current era, Gu Yuena identifies herself and Di Tian as the only unequivocal pure-blooded true dragons remaining on Douluo Continent, with Zi Ji as a possible additional member. She therefore distinguishes restoring the Dragon Clan from merely reviving the wider Soul Beast population 5.

Leadership and Notable Members

Abilities & Skills

Bloodline and Innate Cultivation

  • Primordial dragons can cultivate without a formal cultivation method; techniques chiefly accelerate their progress. Bloodline and inheritance account for much of their underlying strength 8.
  • Xu You describes true dragons as naturally capable of eventually reaching Daluo Golden Immortal, with the potential to reach Hunyuan Golden Immortal under favorable circumstances 25.
  • Douluo dragons place exceptional importance on the Dragon God’s bloodline. Di Tian considers it a requirement for the clan’s sovereign, while Gu Yuena initially assumes it should compel every dragon’s submission 4.
  • That authority does not extend automatically to Primordial dragons: Xu You attacks and subdues Gu Yuena despite her bloodline 4 5.

Ancestral Dragon Scripture

A top-tier cultivation method created specifically for dragons, practiced throughout the Primordial Dragon Clan’s mainstream lineages 8.

  • Availability: Common within the clan, despite being exceedingly rare outside it 11.
  • Compatibility: Dragons can circulate it naturally; ordinary humans and other Soul Beasts generally find it incomprehensible 24.
  • Cross-world use: Both Gu Yuena and Zi Ji successfully cultivate it despite originating in Douluo 8 23.
  • Tribulation benefits: Zi Ji destroys her 300,000-year tribulation effortlessly. Di Tian senses his approaching 900,000-year tribulation becoming less oppressive, but has not yet demonstrated that breakthrough 23 24.
  • Human limitations: A dragon-related Martial Soul does not guarantee compatibility. Qiangu Dongfeng’s attempt annihilates the dragon soul in his Coiling Dragon Staff and nearly destroys the Martial Soul itself 26.

Elemental Daos

Dao Association
Water The clan’s most suitable starting path; Xu You identifies the Law of Water as common to dragons 6 8.
Lightning One of the clan’s three most common paths, associated with thunder and myriad tribulations 25.
Wind Associated with flight, wind, and clouds; another established route for developing dragon combat strength 25.
  • A single Great Dao is normally sufficient for a true dragon. Xu You cultivates all three because karmic restrictions prevent his realm from advancing 25.
  • Dao comprehension matters independently of cultivation rank. Xu You makes Gu Yuena rebuild her foundation around understanding water rather than simply accumulating spiritual Qi 8.

Territorial Empowerment

  • Within the Four Seas, the Primordial Dragon Clan retains enough territorial backing to resist domination by either the Demon Clan or Witch Clan 6.
  • Xu You’s Dragon King Temple operates on a similar principle: merit, fortune, offerings, and local authority raise his combat power toward Daluo Golden Immortal despite his Taiyi Golden Immortal cultivation 6.

Restrictions and Decline

Restriction Effect
Racial karmic burden The entire Primordial Dragon Clan bears responsibility for the ancient war’s slaughter and damage to the earth veins 5.
Lost fortune Heavenly Dao reclaimed the clan’s flourishing fortune, reducing its standing and obstructing cultivation 5.
Restricted reproduction The dragon population continues to dwindle after Heavenly Dao punishment 2.
Territorial confinement The clan is forbidden from appearing on the Primordial mainland and retreats to the Four Seas; Xu You remains outside through his river-stabilizing arrangement 1 5.
Merit cannot erase transgressions Xu You’s protection of humanity and regulation of waterways help sustain him, but do not cancel his inherited racial karma 5 24.

Relationships

  • Phoenix Clan and Qilin Clan — Ancient rivals whose war with the dragons ended all three clans’ dominance 1 14.
  • Demon Clan Heavenly Court — Seeks to absorb the Dragon Clan into its ranks. Its surviving foundations and the Ancestral Dragon’s continued existence make it a potentially decisive addition to the Witch–Demon balance 11.
  • Witch Clan — Opposes the prospect of dragons joining the Demon Court. Houtu initially approaches Xu You partly to investigate the clan’s position 14.
  • Rain Tribe — Worships Xu You as its guardian Dragon King. He protects the tribe, rejects human sacrifices, and appoints Gu Yuena as its shaman 2 11 13 18.
  • Soul Beast Clan — Gu Yuena and Di Tian connect the Douluo dragons’ restoration with the revival of all Soul Beasts, though Gu Yuena prefers becoming sovereign of dragons specifically 4 5.
  • Tang San — Plans to bring the Golden and Silver Dragon Kings under the Tang family through Tang Wulin. He later forbids Wulin from practicing the Ancestral Dragon Scripture 1 24.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Gu Yuena’s Arrival

  • Xu You initially mistakes Na’er for a Primordial dragon child. Her absence of racial karmic burden reveals that she comes from another world 2 3.
  • After failing to command Xu You through the Dragon God’s authority, Gu Yuena decides to cultivate, perfect her bloodline, and conquer the Primordial Dragon Clan before returning to Douluo 4 5.
  • Xu You instead takes her as his disciple and teaches her the Ancestral Dragon Scripture 7 8.

Xu You’s Attempt to Escape Racial Karma

  • Gu Yuena’s foreign origins give Xu You the idea of transferring his identity from the Primordial Dragon Clan to the Douluo Dragon Clan 5.
  • He studies her Creation Godhead to pursue this change. His later appointment as Lord of Reincarnation does not itself remove the clan’s karmic burden 11 22 24.

Dragon Cultivation Reaches Douluo

  • The heavenly screen transmits the Ancestral Dragon Scripture to Douluo, allowing Zi Ji and Di Tian to test a cultivation method from the other world 23 24.
  • Human attempts expose its limits: Qiangu Dongfeng suffers severe backlash, while Long Yeyue bans Shrek Academy disciples from studying it 26 27.
  • Xu You subsequently provides the human-oriented Dragon Transformation Scripture. Unlike the Ancestral Dragon Scripture, it is usable by Wang Jinxi, strengthening his Bone Dragon King Martial Soul and producing physical dragon scales 28 29.

Gu Yuena’s Revised Goal

  • Xu You’s increasing strength repeatedly frustrates Gu Yuena’s ambition to overthrow him and rule the dragons 24 25.
  • She eventually adopts a nearer-term objective: becoming invincible among dragons of the same cultivation level before attempting to command the entire Primordial Dragon Clan 26.
