Heavenly Dao and Cultivation
Heavenly Dao
- Stability and development: The world’s rules favor actions that stabilize and develop it, reflecting Pangu’s intentions in creating it 7.
- Merit: Protecting humans, regulating rivers, repairing heaven, and establishing reincarnation can earn Heavenly Dao merit 1 5 18 20.
- Karmic punishment: Destructive acts can burden individuals or entire races. The Dragon Clan inherits the consequences of its ancient slaughter, while Gonggong receives karmic hindrances for breaking the heavenly pillar 5 18.
- Limits on transcendence: Xu You considers Heavenly Dao unwilling to allow beings to escape its control. It can enforce its authority through lightning and karmic hindrances 6 14.
- Outsiders: Xu You believes exposing Gu Yuena as a foreign dragon could lead to her erasure. He also reasons that an outsider who pledges to develop the world could gain acceptance and merit 6 7.
Cultivation Principles
Cultivation depends on comprehending the Dao and tempering the heart, not merely accumulating power or raising one’s realm 8.
- Realm does not equal combat strength: Xu You’s cultivation remains at Taiyi Golden Immortal, but merit and fortune bring his combat power close to Daluo Golden Immortal within the Dragon King Temple 6.
- Innate origins matter: Bloodline, inherited fortune, and racial karma can determine a cultivator’s opportunities and impose lasting bottlenecks 5.
- Human transformation: Taking human form increases cultivation speed, making the Transformation Technique common among the world’s creatures 8.
- Foreign authority does not automatically transfer: Gu Yuena’s inherited command over Douluo’s elements fails after her arrival. She must learn to comprehend the Primordial World’s laws instead 4 28.
| Realm / Status | Documented Significance |
|---|---|
| Taiyi Golden Immortal | Can independently master a complete law. Xu You masters the Law of Water, but his racial karma obstructs further advancement 5 6. |
| Daluo Golden Immortal | The level Xu You’s temple-enhanced combat power approaches despite his lower cultivation realm 6. |
| Quasi-Sage | Includes the Ancestral Witches and the rulers of the Demon Court. Battles at this level can devastate enormous areas 9 17. |
| Earthly Dao Saint | Houtu’s initial status after creating reincarnation; its power is ordinarily confined to the Underworld 15 20. |
| Heavenly Dao Sage | Associated with Heavenly Dao and Primordial Purple Qi. Unlike an Earthly Dao Saint, such a Sage can freely act throughout the world 9 15 21. |
Inhabitants and Factions
| Faction | Position and Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Dragon Clan | Former overlords punished after the Dragon-Han Great Calamity. Their fortune declines, reproduction is restricted, and inherited karma obstructs cultivation. Within the Four Seas, they retain enough strength to resist domination by the Witch and Demon Clans 1 2 5 6. |
| Phoenix and Qilin Clans | Ancient rivals of the dragons. After the calamity, the Ancestral Phoenix is pinned within the Undying Volcano, while the First Qilin sacrifices himself to the Dao and becomes Qilin Cliff 1. |
| Demon Clan Heavenly Court | Rules the heavens under Di Jun, with Eastern Emperor Taiyi among its leading powers. It seeks the Dragon Clan’s submission to shift the balance against the witches 1 11 17. |
| Witch Clan | Rules the earth and descends from Pangu. Its members lack primordial spirits; the Twelve Ancestral Wu can summon Pangu’s phantom through the Twelve Heavenly Gods and Fiends Great Formation 1 15 20. |
| Human Clan | Created by Nüwa. Initially scattered among vulnerable tribes without cultivation methods, despite being destined to become the world’s future protagonists 2 12 26 28. |
Human Society
- Survival: Humans are hunted by witches and demons despite attempts by Di Jun and Houtu to restrain their subordinates 2.
- Settlements: The Rain Tribe lives in rough timber-and-thatch dwellings and relies on Xu You’s protection 11 13.
- Shamans: Tribal priests preside over sacrifices, communicate with the guardian deity, and hold standing above the chief 11.
- Guardian worship: Some supposed guardian gods keep humans as livestock. Xu You instead forbids human sacrifices and shelters the Rain Tribe without demanding them 2 13.
- Human fortune: The world’s will warns Xu You when he attempts to claim achievements reserved for humanity, including teaching cultivation 14.
History
Ancient Calamities
Pangu created the Primordial World. Its subsequent history includes Luohou’s destruction of the world, the Dragon-Han Great Calamity, and the struggle between witches and demons. These conflicts leave countless dead souls without a place to rest 7 20.
The Dragon-Han Great Calamity ends the supremacy of the dragon, phoenix, and qilin clans. Heavenly Dao punishes the dragons for their slaughter and damage to the earth veins; demons subsequently rule the heavens while witches rule the earth 1 5.
Before the calamity, Xu You leaves the Dragon Clan and vows to stabilize a river. His service earns merit that helps him withstand his race’s karmic burden, though it does not remove that burden 1 5.
Gu Yuena’s Arrival
Gu Yuena appears in Xu You’s temple after disappearing from Douluo. Her defeat by Xu You and the failure of her elemental authority establish that she has entered a separate world 1 3 4.
Recognizing an opportunity to surpass her former limits, she remains to cultivate and hopes eventually to rule the Primordial Dragon Clan. Xu You takes her as his disciple, teaches her the Ancestral Dragon Scripture, and appoints her the Rain Tribe’s shaman 5 7 8 11.
Collapse and Repair of Heaven
Gonggong’s battle with Zhurong ends when he crashes into Mount Buzhou. The broken pillar causes heaven to tilt northwest and the earth to sink southeast; celestial waters, fierce winds, and underground fire devastate the world. The Ancestral Witches attempt to contain the damage while Xu You shields his tribe 17 18.
Nüwa repairs the sky with Five-Colored Divine Stones and restores its support using pillars obtained from an ancient giant turtle. The resulting merit brings her to Sagehood, and the narrative identifies her as the world’s first Sage 18 19.
Establishment of Reincarnation
Houtu vows to create the Netherworld and Six Paths of Reincarnation, giving wandering souls somewhere to return. The act earns immense merit and makes her an Earthly Dao Saint 20.
With Primordial Purple Qi and the Ancestral Witches’ formation, she gains Heavenly Dao’s recognition and overcomes confinement to the Underworld. She then names Xu You Lord of Reincarnation 20 21.
Witch–Demon War and Humanity’s Cultivation
Houtu’s ascension does not prevent the approaching Witch–Demon War. Kunpeng encourages Di Jun’s ten Golden Crow sons to abandon their duties; their flames ravage the world, and they kill Kuafu. Hou Yi shoots down nine of them, leaving Lu Ya alive and provoking the Demon Court’s retaliation 25.
Houtu proposes moving the Witch Clan into the Underworld to escape its destined calamity. Hongjun maintains that the calamity follows Heavenly Dao, while humanity is destined to inherit the central position in the world 26.
Meanwhile, Xu You prepares the Dragon Transformation Scripture for humans. He sends Gu Yuena to a settlement one hundred li east to recruit Fuxi, intending to teach humanity through him and obtain a share of its fortune 28.
Connection to the Douluo World
The heavenly screen broadcasts events in the Primordial World to Douluo Continent and the distant Divine Realm. Viewers initially mistake it for the returning Divine Realm; later, the screen also permits public messages 1 2 27.
| Observer / Faction | Interest in the Primordial World |
|---|---|
| Gu Yuena | Seeks greater strength, a perfected bloodline, and eventual rule over its dragons before returning to challenge the Douluo God Realm 5 9. |
| Yun Ming and the Qiangu Clan | Regard its cultivation system as a possible route beyond Douluo’s limits and toward Sagehood 9. |
| Chen Xinjie | Hopes access to the world could extend Long Yeyue’s life 9. |
| Holy Spirit Cult | Seeks entry to gain supreme power through slaughter; its Ghost and Nether Emperors later consider reincarnation as a source of merit and redemption 9 27. |
| Deep Sea Demon Whale Empress | Considers sacrificing the Primordial Dragon Clan to resurrect her husband 10. |
| Abyssal Sage King and Crimson Mother | Hope to devour the world and surpass their existing limits 10. |
| Tang San | Intends to conquer the world and merge it into his expanded Divine Realm 10. |
Effects Without Physical Travel
- Zi Ji: Learns the Ancestral Dragon Scripture, advances from 290,000 to 300,000 years of cultivation, and effortlessly destroys her Heavenly Tribulation 23.
- Di Tian: Circulates the scripture and senses his approaching 900,000-year tribulation becoming less oppressive 24.
- Qiangu Dongfeng: Fails to cultivate the scripture; its power annihilates the dragon soul in his Coiling Dragon Staff and nearly shatters his Martial Soul 26.
- Shrek Academy: Long Yeyue bans disciples from studying the scripture after failing to cultivate it herself, promoting Tang San’s Mysterious Heaven Skill instead 27.
