Background
Nanahoshi was an academically successful Japanese high school student who lived with her parents, had friends, and enjoyed anime and light novels. Before her disappearance, she argued with a friend while returning from school. Her last memories involved an approaching dump truck and the sensation of being sucked away before losing consciousness 86 87 91.
Luo Ge discovered her unconscious beside a road near the ruined city of Roa after the Fittoa Teleportation Incident. Her school uniform, East Asian features, and English clothing label led him to suspect that she came from his original world. After an unsuccessful attempt to communicate in Japanese, they established a conversation in English 86.
Although Luo Ge initially joked that he had summoned her as a heroine to defeat the Demon King, he admitted that the story was fabricated. Nanahoshi followed him because she had no money, could not speak the local language, and lacked the means to survive independently 86 87.
Possible Connection to the Teleportation Incident
- Luo Ge suspected a connection between Nanahoshi’s arrival and the Fittoa disaster because their timing nearly coincided and she appeared near Buena Village 87.
- He explicitly distinguished that suspicion from personal responsibility: she had no mana capable of powering such a disaster, and he regarded her as another victim 87.
- Teleportation Magic became a possible route home after Luo Ge suggested that travel between worlds might theoretically work in both directions. He did not know how to accomplish it 87.
Appearance
- Build: Slender, with delicate features and a fair complexion 86 135.
- Hair: Straight black hair, later described as falling to her shoulders 86 91.
- Eyes: Dark brown 86.
- Arrival clothing: A Japanese school uniform consisting of a short top, very short skirt, and thin jacket, with her legs left bare despite the cold 86.
- Physical condition: Frequently appears exhausted during long journeys; sleep deprivation and seasickness leave her particularly pale and worn down 121 122 127.
Personality
Nanahoshi is logical, studious, and determined to contribute rather than accept protection without giving anything back. She learns languages rapidly, reads whenever she has the opportunity, and takes pride in finding practical solutions. Luo Ge’s recognition of her planning ability matters deeply to her because she wants to prove that she has value beyond being someone he must protect 91 92 102.
Her composure does not eliminate her fear or homesickness. She wants to return home chiefly because her parents might spend their lives searching without knowing whether she is alive. Even when the Greyrats treat her kindly, their family reunions reinforce her sense that she belongs neither to their household nor to this world 87 118.
She regularly answers Luo Ge’s teasing with sarcasm and openly objects to his unfair treatment. Although she dislikes killing and violence, she distinguishes cruelty from using force to protect others, accepting his rescue of Norn despite being shocked by the killing involved 89 92 121.
Abilities & Skills
Learning and Languages
Nanahoshi’s strongest aptitude is learning rather than combat 91 110.
- Speaks Japanese and enough English to converse with Luo Ge upon arrival 86.
- Learns the world’s common tongue from Luo Ge, reaching simple, halting conversation in just over two months 91.
- Learns the Demon God Language during their travels and usually handles conversations when Luo Ge does not wish to speak 139.
- Combines a strong memory, logical thinking, and sustained concentration with diligent independent reading 91 102.
Planning and Logistics
Her proposals give Luo Ge alternatives to solving problems through strength alone 92.
- Missing-person searches: Proposes reward notices, appeals to rulers using Luo Ge’s Sword King status, and a growing civilian search-and-rescue network 92.
- Diplomacy: Recommends writing to Roxy before approaching the Shirone palace rather than assuming they can enter unannounced 93.
- Information gathering: Advises learning Kishirika’s whereabouts, personality, and preferences before searching aimlessly 128.
- Travel management: Maintains the party’s accounts, budgets expenses, buys supplies, and suggests selling their carriage before a sea voyage 107 128.
Cooking
Nanahoshi is an experienced home cook whose orderly technique is evident during her contest with Luo Ge 108.
- Makes rice balls that Luo Ge, Aisha, and Lilia enjoy; agrees to teach Aisha and Lilia her methods 105.
- Prepares Nanahoshi-yaki, a Japanese-style fried pork cutlet that Randolph awards a perfect score 109.
- Loses the contest to Luo Ge’s egg fried rice, called Sorrowful Rice, which evokes powerful personal memories in both Randolph and Nanahoshi 109.
- Takes charge of cooking at the beach barbecue celebrating the group’s reunion in Wind Port 137.
Combat and Physical Limitations
Luo Ge’s attempts to teach her self-defense reveal a fundamental obstacle: her blocked meridians prevent her from absorbing mana 91.
- Cannot use magic or mana-based Touki reinforcement 91.
- Understands lessons in swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, and basic Fireball magic, but cannot put them into effective practice 91.
- Helps fight an A-rank Red-Devouring Giant Snake by throwing stones; her contribution causes only negligible damage, while Luo Ge protects her and kills the monster 139.
- Has limited stamina, suffers prolonged seasickness, and becomes drunk after only two or three sips of alcohol 121 127 151.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shirone and the Search for Luo Ge’s Family
After leaving Roa with Luo Ge, Nanahoshi spends the journey learning the local language and trying to become less dependent on him. In Shirone, she develops a coordinated search strategy that earns his praise, and the pair begin taking adventuring jobs to fund their activities 89 91 92 93.
She accompanies him toward the palace in hopes of contacting Roxy and is present when Aisha asks for help rescuing her mother. Luo Ge later leaves Nanahoshi and Aisha at the inn while he accompanies Zanoba to the palace 93 95.
Journey to Millis
Traveling south with Luo Ge, Lilia, and Aisha, Nanahoshi introduces rice balls to the group and becomes a cooking teacher to the mother and daughter. Her subsequent cooking contest with Luo Ge ends in defeat; tasting his fried rice brings back memories of her grandmother, parents, friends, and someone she never confessed her feelings to, causing her to break down 105 109.
The Greyrats’ reunion in Millis sharpens her loneliness. Although the family welcomes her, she remains outside their private family meeting and feels out of place watching their affectionate farewells before she and Luo Ge leave for the Demon Continent 114 118.
Demon Continent Journey
The route to Zant Port exhausts Nanahoshi, who carries luggage and cooks while Luo Ge claims the chores will strengthen her. Her hopes of resting are frustrated by noisy accommodations, followed by severe seasickness during the voyage. Luo Ge eventually stays in their cabin to care for her, and they reach Wind Port after more than three months at sea 121 122 124 125 127.
At Wind Port, she meets Rudeus and initially hopes that another Japanese transmigrator will help her find a way home. His firm refusal to return disappoints her. Luo Ge nevertheless promises that he will help her pursue her own wish 135.
She continues north with Luo Ge, providing supplies, communication, and practical support. They visit the Migurd village and eventually find Kishirika in Klasma. After feeding the Demon Emperor, they obtain Zenith’s general location in the Gapan labyrinth on the Begaritt Continent 128 138 139 146.
Separation from Luo Ge
After returning to Zant Port with Roxy, Luo Ge abruptly announces that he must leave on an important task for roughly half a year. Nanahoshi questions the decision, unable to understand what could take priority over finding his family. Before departing, he places her hand in Roxy’s and entrusts her to his teacher’s protection 168 170.
Nanahoshi cries during the farewell and thanks him for looking after her throughout their two and a half years together. She then travels with Roxy to Milishion, where they inform Paul that Zenith is alive and explain where she can be found 170 171.
News of His Death and Later Events
While waiting in Milishion, Nanahoshi worries about Luo Ge’s prolonged absence and envies Roxy’s unwavering confidence in him. She later attends the gathering where Rudeus reports that Luo Ge died protecting him from Orsted, and mourns alongside the others 184 190 191.
In later events, Nanahoshi helps Roxy and Elinalise obtain ingredients and prepare pufferfish soup for Luo Ge. She also joins the companions eavesdropping on Luo Ge and Roxy’s private conversation, mistakenly interpreting his request for Roxy’s help as something intimate 198 205.
Relationships
- Luo Ge / Rog Greyrat — Her first contact, protector, language teacher, and closest traveling companion in the new world. Their friendship combines frequent bickering with deep reliance; he promises to help her return home. Despite others’ assumptions, he denies that they are romantically involved 86 87 91 114 135 170.
- Roxy Migurdia — Becomes responsible for her safety after Luo Ge’s departure. Nanahoshi admires Roxy’s kindness and understanding, while Roxy envies the easy familiarity Nanahoshi shares with Luo Ge 170 184.
- Rudeus Greyrat — A fellow Japanese transmigrator. Their shared language initially excites her, but his refusal to seek a return to Japan ends her hope of gaining a partner for that goal 135.
- Aisha Greyrat — Traveling companion and cooking pupil. Nanahoshi finds her adorable and agrees to teach her how to make rice balls 95 105.
- Lilia — Traveling companion who treats Nanahoshi courteously and asks to learn her distinctive cooking techniques 105 118.
- Parents — Her desire to reunite with them drives her search for a way home; she is especially distressed by the thought that they may never learn what happened to her 87 109.
