Background / History

Childhood and departure

Roxy grew up unable to use the telepathy through which other Migurds communicated. Although her parents loved her, she experienced village life as an outsider, watching other children play and exchange secrets without being able to join them. A visiting human mage introduced her to magic and stories of the outside world, giving her a reason to leave. He taught her beginner magic before departing without saying goodbye, leaving only a letter 143 202.

After growing up, Roxy left the village and joined an adventuring party on the Demon Continent. Her companions cared for her, but the party eventually disbanded after an accident. She then sailed alone to the Millis Continent, where discrimination against the Demon Race prevented her from finding decent work and sometimes even buying from shops 143 202.

Ranoa University and employment

After years of wandering, Roxy reached the Three Great Magic Nations and found her first teacher again. His recommendation allowed her to enter Ranoa University of Magic. She supported herself while studying for four years and graduated as a Water Saint-tier magician 143.

Her graduation thesis identified numerous errors in her advisor’s research, causing a falling-out. She left without saying goodbye and subsequently faced repeated employment rejections despite her qualifications. After failing to become the tutor of the mayor’s daughter in Roa, she accepted the Greyrat family’s rural tutoring commission. Paul and Zenith’s household became the first place where she felt the warmth of a family beyond her troubled childhood home 143.

Appearance

Roxy is petite, with blue hair, blue eyes, and a youthful face. Like other Migurds, she retains the appearance of a girl around fourteen, leading strangers to underestimate her age and qualifications 8 155 163.

  • Hair: Worn in two braids, with a distinctive cowlick 13 143.
  • Usual mage attire: Felt hat, mage’s robe, and staff 9.
  • Later outfit: Large felt magician’s hat, skirt, white knee-high boots, and a yellow cloak; her clothes are inexpensive but clean and neatly kept 206.

Personality

Roxy is a conscientious teacher who adjusts her lessons to her students’ needs. Once she realizes the Greyrat brothers already understand practical spellcasting, she concentrates on theory, geography, and racial customs. She gives Luo Ge extra attention because his magic develops more slowly than Rudeus’s, encouraging him rather than harshly scolding him for neglected assignments 8 9.

She also takes pride in her expertise and enjoys impressing her pupils. Their extraordinary talent repeatedly shakes her confidence, but she remains capable of reassessing her assumptions. Seeing Luo Ge defeat Paul helps her accept her own earlier loss, while his later accomplishments become a major source of pride 10 15 153 202.

Years of isolation and discrimination leave Roxy sensitive about belonging, her appearance, and her relationship with Luo Ge. She worries that her age, demon heritage, and former position as his teacher could burden him. Nevertheless, she is independent and resilient: disappointment prompts her to consider returning to exploration rather than abandoning her ambitions 170 202 204.

Abilities & Skills

Water Magic

Roxy specializes in water magic and reaches Water King Rank 27.

  • Water Ball: Demonstrates a beginner water spell during her first lesson with the Greyrat brothers 8.
  • Water arrows: Uses intermediate water magic against a Doom Boar and three Assault Dogs 10.
  • Cumulonimbus: A Water Saint-tier spell that produces a large storm with rain and lightning. She demonstrates it for Rudeus’s graduation examination 12.
  • Frost Strike: Repeatedly casts it after finding Elinalise with five demon men at their inn, blasting Elinalise out of the room 137.
  • Lightning: A Water King Rank spell whose incantation initially resembles Cumulonimbus before changing into a lightning invocation. Her demonstration reduces a large tree to ashes and leaves a scorched pit 206.

Casting Limits

Roxy’s rank does not eliminate the practical weaknesses of her spellcasting 13 206.

  • Incantations: Her combat demonstrations use spoken chants. She is astonished by Luo Ge and Rudeus’s genuine chantless magic 8 10.
  • Close-range vulnerability: Five-year-old Luo Ge closes the distance and defeats her with one wooden-sword strike before she can respond 13.
  • Mana consumption: A single demonstration of Lightning uses almost all her mana and nearly causes her to collapse. She says she practiced the spell for over ten years 206.

Healing and Detoxification

Roxy uses restorative magic both for emergencies and everyday care 9 12 143.

  • Heals Rudeus after Luo Ge punches him 9.
  • Treats an injured Migurd child’s leg during her return home 143.
  • Uses detoxification magic to make a grilled pufferfish safe for Luo Ge’s birthday 12.
  • Teaches Luo Ge beginner healing magic, which remains part of his repertoire long after leaving home 36.

Other Elemental Magic

  • Fire magic: Follows her water-arrow attack with a fireball and uses another fireball to light a riverside barbecue 10.

Teaching and Magical Theory

Roxy emphasizes understanding a spell rather than memorizing its words mechanically 24.

  • Teaches magical foundations, geography, and the customs of different races 8.
  • Guides Rudeus to Water Saint Rank and Luo Ge to advanced magic during their childhood lessons 12.
  • Her advice later helps Luo Ge understand Divine Samsara Healing, allowing him to survive otherwise fatal injuries. She is not present when he learns or casts it 24.
  • Resumes advanced instruction after their reunion by teaching Luo Ge Lightning 206.

Adventuring

Roxy is an experienced A-rank adventurer capable of independent labyrinth exploration 10 27.

  • Clears a labyrinth alone before attaining Water King Rank 27.
  • Helps plan the search for the Greyrat family, prioritizing the Demon Continent because displaced refugees there would struggle to return home 104.
  • Chooses a safer sea route through the Millis Continent rather than an unauthorized crossing through sea-race territory 104.

Telepathic Limitation

  • Unlike the other inhabitants of her home village, Roxy cannot use Migurd telepathy. This prevents her from participating in their usual communication and is central to her childhood isolation 139 143.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Staff — Her principal spellcasting implement; used for combat and the Lightning demonstration 10 206.
  • Felt hat and mage clothing — Worn when traveling and teaching outside the household 9 206.
  • Suitcase — Carries her belongings during her travels and visits home 7 143.
  • Luo Ge figurine — A palm-sized likeness made and sent by Rudeus. She keeps it close to her body while believing Luo Ge dead 126.
  • Handmade student wands — Makes one each for Luo Ge and Rudeus. Their embedded magic stones reduce mana consumption 12.

Relationships

  • Luo Ge / Rog Greyrat — Pupil, cherished companion, and eventual recipient of her romantic affection. She first saves his life, later mourns his presumed death for years, and reunites with him after seven years apart. Their relationship becomes openly romantic after his confession, though she asks him to reaffirm his feelings two years later 7 104 155 203 204.
  • Rudeus Greyrat — Pupil whose exceptional magical ability repeatedly surprises her. She oversees his Water Saint examination; his letter first informs her of Luo Ge’s presumed death, and he later sends her a figurine of his brother 8 12 27 126.
  • Paul and Zenith Greyrat — Employers who treat her like family. After the Teleportation Incident, she helps search for their missing household and delivers news of Zenith’s location to Paul 104 143 171.
  • Rowin — Father. Loves her and asks her to stay longer when she returns after decades away 140 144.
  • Rokari — Mother. Welcomes her home and tells her about visits from her former pupils, providing the first news that Luo Ge is alive 143 144.
  • Elinalise — Friend and search-party companion. Comforts Roxy after nightmares and helps her during her reunion with Luo Ge, although her sexual activities frequently exasperate Roxy 104 110 137 163.
  • Talhand — Search-party companion and former teammate of Paul and Zenith in Black Wolf’s Fang 104 161.
  • Nanahoshi Shizuka — Luo Ge’s companion, entrusted to Roxy’s care. Roxy agrees to look after her but privately compares herself unfavorably with Nanahoshi as a possible romantic partner for Luo Ge 170.
  • Pax — Former royal pupil. After Roxy leaves Shirone, he attempts to capture her disciple to force her return and compel her to bear his children 27 96.
  • Lara Greyrat — A near-identical Migurd girl who impersonates Roxy and introduces herself as Luo Ge’s current wife. Her attempt to provoke Roxy into confessing instead drives Roxy to leave 195 201.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Greyrat Household Tutor

  • Meets three-year-old Luo Ge after his near-fatal encounter with poisonous pufferfish. He guides her to the household that has advertised for a tutor 7.
  • Initially doubts that children so young can be magical prodigies. After both reproduce her water spell without chanting, she formally accepts them as students 8.
  • Spends two years teaching the brothers. Although she initially urges Luo Ge toward a magical career, witnessing him kill an Assault Dog reveals the extent of his swordsmanship talent 10 12.
  • Concludes their tuition with Rudeus’s successful Water Saint examination 12.

Failed Journey to the Sword Sanctum

  • Refuses Luo Ge’s request to take him to the Sword Sanctum because he is too young for the dangerous journey 13.
  • Accepts a wagered duel and loses in one strike. Luo Ge carries her away overnight, but Paul catches them in Roa and brings them home 13.
  • After Paul allows Luo Ge to travel under Ghislaine’s escort, Roxy leaves separately. Before departing, she holds the unconscious Luo Ge’s hand and asks Ghislaine to ensure he eats, sleeps, and reviews his magic lessons 16 17.

Shirone and Years of Mourning

  • Attains Water King Rank and becomes tutor to Shirone’s seventh prince 27.
  • Receives Rudeus’s report that Luo Ge died after encountering the Dragon God. She blames herself for leaving him and suffers recurring nightmares in which he begs her to save him 27 104.
  • Leaves Shirone before Luo Ge arrives looking for her. Pax uses their connection as the basis for an ambush against him 93 96.

Search for the Greyrat Family

  • Returns to the devastated Fittoa Territory after the Mass Teleportation and joins Elinalise and Talhand in searching for Paul’s family 104.
  • Fails to identify Luo Ge aboard their ship despite finding his swordsmanship familiar; her certainty that he is dead prevents her from recognizing him 126.
  • Revisits her parents and learns that Luo Ge recently visited the village. She formally bids them farewell and leaves determined to find him 143 144.
  • Asks Kishirika to locate Luo Ge and his family, then learns of his survival and confrontation with Badigadi 153.

Reunion and Renewed Trust

  • Reunites with Luo Ge at a seaside port after seven years apart. Once she recognizes him, they embrace 155.
  • Apologizes for leaving him and failing to protect him; he reassures her that he never blamed her 156.
  • Becomes anxious about losing him again. While drunk, she begs him not to leave, and he stays beside her until dawn 163.
  • Supports his decision to undertake a separate task, accepting responsibility for Nanahoshi and delivering news that Zenith is in the Gapan labyrinth on the Begaritt Continent 170 171.

Lara’s Impersonation and Roxy’s Departure

  • Faces another report of Luo Ge’s death following his battle with Orsted, only for him to return during his own funeral 190 191 193.
  • Is confronted with Lara’s impersonation. Luo Ge distinguishes them using a question about their private “Voiceless Water Magic” joke 194 195.
  • Prepares pufferfish soup for Luo Ge but leaves without delivering it after seeing him picnicking with Lara 198.
  • Misinterprets his encouragement to pursue her dreams as a request to distance herself. She blesses him and Lara, then prepares to leave Milishion to explore labyrinths alone 198 201 202.

Confession and Further Instruction

  • Luo Ge catches up with her carriage and declares his love. Roxy agrees to stay, promises not to leave him again, and asks him to call her “Roxy” rather than “Teacher” 203.
  • Remains concerned about their age difference, her race, and her former authority over him. She asks him to tell her again in two years if his feelings remain unchanged 204.
  • Teaches him Lightning, nearly exhausting her mana in the demonstration. He immediately reproduces the spell with substantially greater mana and a much larger storm 206.

Trivia

  • “Voiceless Water Magic” is a recurring private euphemism, not evidence that Roxy mastered chantless spellcasting. Luo Ge first uses it after catching her in an embarrassing private moment, then later uses her recognition of the joke to expose Lara 9 13 195.
  • Pufferfish recur throughout her bond with Luo Ge: their first meeting involves his poisoning, she prepares a detoxified fish for his birthday, and she later cooks him pufferfish soup 7 12 198.
  • Her fear of the Superd Tribe persists into adulthood. She tells her pupils stories about Superds eating children and later flees after seeing a Superd warrior fighting on the beach 7 131 135.
  • The supposed “sacred relic” is not hers. When Luo Ge returns an item he believes belonged to Roxy, she examines it and denies ever wearing it 203.
